To play Bedrock on a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, open the official Minecraft Launcher, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, choose Minecraft for Windows in the edition selector, install it if necessary, and select Play. You are selecting a separate edition—not converting Java Edition or changing its save files.
The same launcher contains both PC editions. Choose Bedrock when you need cross-play with Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or mobile players; keep Java selected for Java-only servers and worlds. Back up any important saves before attempting a transfer, because the documented Java and Bedrock file procedures are same-edition operations.

The switch takes place in the unified launcher. It does not alter, uninstall, or convert Java Edition.
- Install or update the official Minecraft Launcher. Use the current launcher on a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC.
- Sign in with the owning Microsoft account. This must be the account that owns the PC entitlement for Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition.
- Open the edition selector. In the launcher’s left-side menu, select Minecraft for Windows. That is the Windows PC name for Bedrock Edition.
- Install Bedrock if the button says Install. Wait for the download and installation to finish. If it already says Play, the edition is installed.
- Select Play. Bedrock opens in its own game environment. Your Java installation and Java saves remain separate.
If Minecraft for Windows does not appear, sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that purchased or redeemed the PC bundle. A Microsoft account is required for Minecraft on Windows PC, and an account that owns only another platform’s copy may not show the Windows entitlement.

What does “change Minecraft version” mean?
People use the phrase for three different tasks. Identifying the task first prevents a launcher selection from being mistaken for a save conversion.
Launch Bedrock instead of Java
Select Minecraft for Windows in the launcher. This is the normal meaning of switching editions on a Windows PC.
Recommended Free Tools
Join friends on another platform
Select Bedrock when the host or your friends are using Windows Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, or iOS. Bedrock is the edition designed for that cross-platform group.
Move an existing Java world
This is a separate data-conversion problem. Selecting Bedrock will not make a Java world appear in the Bedrock Worlds list. The official help procedures document Java backups moving between Java installations and Bedrock files being imported into Bedrock; they do not establish an official automatic Java-to-Bedrock conversion procedure.
Do I need to buy Minecraft again for Bedrock?
For Windows PC, the Java & Bedrock package includes both editions for one purchase. If the Microsoft account owns that PC package, Bedrock should be available from the same launcher without a second PC purchase.
Do not confuse ownership with a world transfer. Owning both editions gives you access to both programs; it does not copy Java saves into Bedrock or make Java servers compatible with Bedrock. If the Bedrock tile is missing, resolve the account or entitlement issue before buying anything.

What the PC entitlement covers
- Java Edition on PC: the desktop Java version selected separately in the launcher.
- Bedrock Edition on PC: labeled Minecraft for Windows in the launcher.
- Other platforms: Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android, and iOS purchases are platform-specific. A Windows entitlement should not be assumed to unlock a console or mobile store listing.
What is the difference between Java and Bedrock?
Both are Minecraft editions, but they target different platforms and multiplayer networks. Use the following comparison before deciding which one to launch.
| Decision point | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| PC launcher label | Java Edition | Minecraft for Windows |
| Supported platforms described by Minecraft | PC Java environment | Windows 10/11, Xbox One and Series, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile |
| Cross-play audience | Java players on compatible Java installations | Windows Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and mobile Bedrock players |
| Multiplayer compatibility | Join Java-hosted games, servers, Realms, or LAN sessions | Join Bedrock-hosted games, servers, Realms, or LAN sessions |
| Windows account | Microsoft account required for Windows PC play | Microsoft account required for Windows PC play |
| World handling | Uses Java saves and Java backups | Uses Bedrock worlds and Bedrock import or Realms workflows |
| Purchase on Windows | Included in the Java & Bedrock PC package | Included in the Java & Bedrock PC package |
The practical rule is simple: match the edition to the host. A Bedrock player cannot directly enter a Java-only world or server, and a Java player cannot directly enter a Bedrock-only world or server.
Can I play Bedrock with friends on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile?
Yes, provided everyone is using Bedrock and the host’s multiplayer setup permits the connection. On Windows, that means launching Minecraft for Windows, not Java Edition.
When Bedrock is the correct choice
- Your friends play on Xbox One, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4 or 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, or iOS.
- You want to join a Bedrock Realm, server, LAN game, or hosted world.
- You want the same edition family across Windows and supported consoles or mobile devices.
When Java is the correct choice
- The host runs Java Edition.
- The server address or Realm is specifically a Java service.
- Your existing save, mods, or technical setup depends on the Java edition.
Changing the launcher selection changes which multiplayer network you enter. It does not bridge the two networks, and there is no setting that lets a Java client join a normal Bedrock-hosted session directly.

No. Java and Bedrock store worlds differently, and the documented official instructions do not provide an automatic Java-to-Bedrock conversion workflow. Selecting Bedrock will not list worlds from Java’s saves folder.
Back up important worlds before experimenting with any conversion utility or transfer. Keep the untouched Java copy until you have opened and checked any converted result in Bedrock.

What the official Java backup procedure does
Minecraft’s Java transfer instructions cover moving a Java backup to another computer running Java Edition:
- Make or locate the zipped Java world backup.
- Copy the zip file to the destination computer and unzip it.
- Place the resulting world folder in the Java saves directory.
- On Windows, the documented directory is
%appdata%.minecraftsaves. - On macOS, the documented directory is
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves. - Open Java Edition and select the world.
This procedure preserves a Java world for another Java installation. It is not a Bedrock import method.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat the official Bedrock import procedure does
Bedrock for Windows can import a saved Bedrock world file. The workflow is:
- Copy the Bedrock world file to the Windows computer.
- Launch Minecraft for Windows.
- Select Play.
- Open the Worlds tab.
- Select Import world.
- Choose the saved Bedrock file and wait for the import to complete.
The file must be a Bedrock world backup. Renaming a Java folder or placing it in the Bedrock import dialog does not convert its format.
How Bedrock Realms transfer works
For a Bedrock world moving between devices, Minecraft documents a Realms workflow. Sign in with the same Microsoft account on both devices, upload the world from the source device to the Realm, then download it on the destination device. The downloaded world appears as a copy in the destination device’s Worlds tab.
That workflow transfers Bedrock to Bedrock. It does not turn a Java save into a Bedrock save.

What about third-party Java-to-Bedrock converters?
Third-party converters may advertise Java-to-Bedrock support, but they are separate, tool-dependent solutions rather than an official Minecraft procedure. Results can vary by game version, dimensions, entities, inventories, redstone behavior, command blocks, datapacks, and modded content. If you use one, work on a duplicate, retain the original Java backup, and verify the converted world in a test copy before replacing anything.
How do I back up a world before switching editions?
Back up before changing files, installing a converter, or deleting an old installation. A launcher switch alone normally leaves the files untouched, but a backup gives you a recovery point if you later manipulate them.
- Close both Minecraft editions and the Launcher.
- For Java, open
%appdata%.minecraftsaveson Windows. - Copy the folder for the world you want to preserve to a separate location, such as an external drive or another user folder.
- Compress the copied folder into a zip archive and include the date and edition in its name.
- For Bedrock, use the world’s in-game management or backup option when available, and keep the resulting saved world file outside the active Minecraft data directory.
- Do not edit the only copy. Test imports or conversions on duplicates.
A backup is especially important for worlds containing valuable builds, multiplayer progress, command systems, or modded content that may not have an equivalent in Bedrock.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why is Minecraft for Windows missing from the launcher?
The most common cause is account ownership: the signed-in Microsoft account does not own the Windows Java & Bedrock package, or the launcher has not refreshed the entitlement.
Check the account
- Open the profile menu in the Launcher and note the signed-in Microsoft account.
- Sign out, then sign back in with the account used to purchase or redeem the PC package.
- Confirm that you are not using a different family member’s, work, or school account.
- Restart the Launcher after signing in.
Check installation and updates
- Update the official Launcher from its Windows installation source.
- Allow the Launcher to finish loading your library before switching tabs.
- Install pending Windows or Microsoft Store updates if the Launcher reports that a component is unavailable.
- Restart Windows after a failed installation, then check the edition selector again.
Do not use Mojang migration as a fix
The Mojang-account migration process ended in 2023. Minecraft states that migration completed on September 19, 2023, and that the official migration period ended December 18, 2023; Support no longer handles migration-related requests. A current launcher problem should therefore be addressed through the Microsoft account that owns the PC entitlement, not by looking for an old migration option.

- If it is a Java world, launch Java Edition and confirm that it still appears there. Use the Java backup procedure for another Java computer.
- If it is a Bedrock backup, use Play > Worlds > Import world and select the Bedrock save file.
- If it was transferred through Realms, sign in with the same Microsoft account used on the source device and look for the downloaded copy in the Bedrock Worlds tab.
- If a conversion was attempted, check the converter’s output folder and open only a duplicate until you have confirmed that the terrain and important gameplay elements are intact.
Do not delete the original folder simply because it is absent from Bedrock’s list. Absence from one edition’s menu does not mean the save was erased.
Which edition should I launch each time?
Use this quick decision guide:
| Your situation | Launcher choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Friends are on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile | Minecraft for Windows | Those platforms use the Bedrock multiplayer network. |
| A server administrator specifies Java | Java Edition | Java clients join Java-hosted games and servers. |
| You are continuing a Java single-player world | Java Edition | The save remains in Java’s world format. |
| You are continuing a Bedrock single-player world | Minecraft for Windows | The world is stored in Bedrock’s format. |
| You need a Bedrock Realm or Bedrock LAN game | Minecraft for Windows | Edition compatibility is required for the hosted session. |
| You only want to test the other edition | Select either edition | The PC package provides both; switching the tile does not remove the other installation. |
What account and platform requirements matter?
Windows PC play requires a Microsoft account. The account connection supports multiplayer, Realms, Marketplace purchases, parental controls, social features, and cross-platform identity. Use one account consistently when moving Bedrock worlds through Realms so the destination can access the uploaded world.
Bedrock’s cross-play list does not mean every device shares every purchase or feature. The Windows launcher gives access to the PC editions, while console and mobile copies are obtained through their respective platforms. Always check the platform on which the game was purchased before assuming that a license follows a different store.
What are the most common switching mistakes?
- Choosing the wrong tile: “Minecraft for Windows” is Bedrock; “Java Edition” is not a synonym for the whole PC package.
- Expecting a shared Worlds list: each edition maintains its own save format and menu.
- Trying to join a friend without matching editions: confirm the host’s edition before troubleshooting network settings.
- Buying the game again before checking the account: verify the Microsoft account and entitlement first.
- Deleting Java after opening Bedrock: the launcher selection does not create a Bedrock copy of Java worlds, so keep the Java installation and backups until your migration decision is complete.
- Using a converter on the original save: make a duplicate and test the output.
- Following old Mojang migration guides: migration is no longer an available route.
Can I keep both Java and Bedrock installed?
Yes. The unified Launcher is designed to let Windows players switch between the two editions. Keeping both installed is useful when your single-player saves, servers, or friends are split between Java and Bedrock.
Because the editions are separate, install updates and manage storage for each one independently. Removing one edition does not convert its worlds for the other; preserve backups before uninstalling anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch editions without an internet connection?
The Launcher normally needs an internet connection for account sign-in, entitlement checks, installation, and updates. After an edition is installed and the Launcher has validated the account, offline availability depends on the Launcher’s current offline rules and the game’s cached login state.
Does Bedrock support the same Java mods and shaders?
No. Java mods, mod loaders, and Java shader packages are edition-specific. Bedrock uses its own add-on and content systems, so check compatibility for each world and pack rather than copying Java mod files into Bedrock.
Can a Bedrock player join a Java Realm by changing a setting?
No. Realms are edition-specific. The player must launch the edition used by that Realm; changing privacy, account, or network settings cannot make a Java client enter a Bedrock Realm or the reverse.
Will achievements carry over when I use the other edition?
Treat achievements and progression as edition-specific. A Java world and a Bedrock world are separate saves, so progress earned in one should not be assumed to appear in the other.
