Possibly, but undisclosed AI use does not automatically qualify a game for a Steam refund. Steam’s normal rule is a request made within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of recorded playtime. You can still ask Steam to review a request outside those limits, especially if the store page or other pre-purchase statements materially misrepresented the game. Your legal rights may provide additional remedies, depending on where you bought the game and what you agreed to at checkout.
The practical strategy is to preserve the store-page wording, purchase record, playtime, and reliable evidence of the undisclosed AI use, then present the facts clearly through Steam Support. Treat the platform request and any statutory consumer-law claim as separate routes.
What is Steam’s standard refund rule?
Steam says you can request a refund for nearly any purchase, but its ordinary game-refund conditions are a purchase made within two weeks and less than two hours of playtime. The policy is based mainly on elapsed time and recorded use, not on whether a game contains AI. Valve’s current guidance is available in Steam Support’s refund instructions and the Common Refund Questions.
For the playtime calculation, Steam says online, offline, and shared-library play all count. That means a game can exceed the ordinary threshold even if you did not play it continuously on your own account.

Valve’s wording that refunds are available “for any reason” is qualified by the time and playtime conditions. It should not be read as an AI-specific entitlement or as a promise that every request will be approved.
Does Steam have an automatic refund rule for undisclosed AI?
No. Valve’s published materials do not say that discovering undisclosed AI content by itself guarantees a refund. They describe an AI-disclosure process for developers and the general refund standards for customers.
What developers must disclose
In its Steamworks announcement, Valve says developers complete a Content Survey with an AI section. The disclosure distinguishes between:

- Pre-generated AI content: art, code, sound, or other material created with AI tools during development.
- Live-generated AI content: material produced by AI while the game is running. Developers must also describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal output.
Valve says it uses this information during its pre-release review and plans to show much of it on the game’s store page so customers can understand how AI is used. The announcement is at AI Content on Steam.
A missing or incomplete disclosure may be relevant when you explain why the purchase did not match what the store page led you to expect. It is not, by itself, a rule that bypasses Steam’s normal refund conditions.

How do I request a refund for a game with undisclosed AI?
Use Steam’s normal support flow and describe the disclosure issue as a specific factual discrepancy rather than as a general complaint about AI.
- Sign in to Steam Help.
- Open Purchases and select the game.
- Choose the problem that best matches your situation.
- Select I’d like to request a refund.
- Submit the form with the purchase date, recorded playtime, the store-page representation, and what later evidence showed.
If the game is still within the ordinary window, keep the explanation concise and identify the undisclosed information. If it is outside the window, explain why the omission mattered to your decision to buy and ask Steam to review the request as an exception. Steam’s support page allows requests outside the standard conditions, but that review remains discretionary.

A useful explanation answers four questions:
- What did the store page, trailer, developer statement, or other pre-purchase material say?
- What AI use did you later discover, and how did you discover it?
- Why would the information have affected your purchase decision?
- What remedy are you requesting?
For example, you could state that the store page presented a particular type of authored artwork, that a dated developer statement or in-game file later indicated AI-generated assets, and that the omission was material to your decision. Avoid claiming that AI use is automatically unlawful; focus on the difference between the representation and the product you received.
What evidence should you save before submitting?
Steam or a consumer authority can evaluate only the records you provide. Save evidence before a store page is edited or a post is deleted.
- Store-page records: dated screenshots or a saved copy showing the description, AI disclosure area, feature list, and marketing claims as they appeared when you bought the game.
- Transaction details: the receipt, purchase date, currency, account used, and the game’s app or package identity.
- Playtime: the current Steam playtime and, if relevant, dates showing online, offline, or shared-library use.
- Discovery evidence: a reliable source identifying the AI use, such as a developer correction, technical explanation, or identifiable in-game asset. Record its publication date and URL.
- Correspondence: replies from the developer or Steam Support, including ticket numbers and dates.
Keep original files and avoid altering screenshots. If a source is a video or social post, preserve the full context rather than a cropped quotation. Evidence can support your explanation, but it cannot turn an uncertain allegation into an established fact.

What if I am outside 14 days or have more than two hours?
You can still submit a request. Steam’s published guidance says customers outside the ordinary limits may ask for a review, while making clear that the standard policy does not promise approval in those circumstances.

Your explanation should address the timing directly. Say when you purchased the game, how much playtime is recorded, when you learned about the AI use, and why the information could not reasonably have been evaluated before purchase. If the store page changed after you bought the game, include the earlier dated copy and explain the difference.
Do not describe an exception request as a guaranteed remedy. Steam may apply its ordinary rules even when you believe the omission was important. A denial of the platform request also does not necessarily decide a separate statutory claim under your local law.
Could a misleading store page support a different claim?
Possibly. The stronger argument is usually not “the game used AI,” but “the seller’s pre-purchase representation omitted or contradicted information that was material to the transaction.” Whether that amounts to misrepresentation, a lack of conformity, or another legal breach depends on the wording, the evidence, and the law governing your purchase.
Questions to test the strength of the facts
- Was there an express representation? A specific statement about how art, dialogue, code, or other content was created is more useful than a general impression.
- Was the information material? Explain why knowing about the AI use would have changed your decision, price expectations, or willingness to buy.
- Was the statement available before payment? Checkout pages, store descriptions, trailers, and developer announcements can matter differently from comments posted after release.
- Can the discrepancy be documented? Dated records are more persuasive than an uncited claim that the page once said something else.
- What remedy does the applicable law provide? Some systems focus on repair, replacement, price reduction, or termination rather than an automatic full refund.
These questions help you present facts; they do not predict a legal result. For a high-value purchase or a disputed transaction, consult a qualified consumer adviser in your jurisdiction.

How do EU withdrawal rights interact with Steam refunds?
Steam’s Subscriber Agreement says its refund policy applies without prejudice to statutory rights and directs EU and UK customers to separate information about those rights. Read the agreement at Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement.
European Commission guidance describes a general 14-day withdrawal period for online purchases, subject to exceptions. For online digital content, the withdrawal right can end once downloading or streaming begins if the consumer expressly agreed to start performance and acknowledged that the right would be lost. That withdrawal rule is distinct from whether the game conformed to the contract or whether a pre-purchase statement was misleading. Starting a download may affect a withdrawal claim, but it does not automatically answer a separate conformity or misrepresentation question. The checkout record showing what you agreed to is therefore important.

For UK purchases, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 contains remedies for qualifying breaches involving digital content. The legislation is available from UK Parliament.
The cited provisions do not say that AI use, or a failure to mention AI, automatically proves a breach. You would need to connect the omission to the game’s actual representations, the transaction, and the statutory requirements. Depending on the circumstances, the remedy may be a repair or replacement, a price reduction, or a right to reject rather than an automatic outcome in every case.

Residents elsewhere may have different rules, deadlines, and definitions of digital conformity. Steam’s voluntary policy is not a substitute for checking the law that applies to your purchase.
What mistakes can weaken an undisclosed-AI refund request?
- Waiting while continuing to play: additional recorded use can make the ordinary playtime condition harder to meet.
- Submitting a conclusion without evidence: state the exact representation and attach the dated record that supports it.
- Calling all AI use deceptive: distinguish between disclosed pre-generated assets, live-generated output, and a specific omission that affected your purchase.
- Ignoring the purchase route: identify the account, package, receipt, and any shared-library activity so Support can match the request to the transaction.
- Mixing legal arguments together: separate the Steam-policy request from any statutory rights and identify the jurisdiction for the latter.
- Overstating what Valve’s announcement says: it describes developer disclosure and store-page presentation; it does not announce a blanket refund entitlement.

What should you expect after submitting?
Steam may approve the refund under its ordinary rules, review an exception, or decline the request. The policy pages do not publish a guaranteed approval rate, and the existence of an AI disclosure issue does not determine the result by itself.
Keep the ticket correspondence and note the date of each response. If you pursue a statutory route, those records can show that you first raised the issue with the platform, but they do not replace the evidence required under your local law.

Does AI-generated content automatically make a Steam game illegal?
