No. Steam does not document a consumer setting that filters out every game made with generative AI or hides all such titles. Valve does require developers to disclose qualifying AI use in Steamworks, but that disclosure is not described as a complete, user-searchable inventory. Steam’s documented consumer controls remain ordinary tag filters and content preferences for categories such as violence or nudity. If you want to avoid AI-using games, you currently need to check titles individually and treat community metadata as clues rather than proof.

Does Steam have an AI-games filter or hide switch?

Steam’s documented search and store-preference tools do not include a generative-AI category. You can narrow results with tags and set preferences for mature-content categories, but Valve does not describe an “AI games” toggle, an “exclude generative AI” checkbox, or a global hide-all command.

This distinction matters because Steam has two separate systems: a developer disclosure process that records certain AI use, and consumer-facing discovery controls that were designed for genres, themes, and content warnings. The first can provide information about a particular product; the second does not let you query all products by production method.

How does Steam handle generative AI in game listings?

Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks developers to describe AI use in content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. Its wording covers both content made during development and content generated while the game is running.

What does “pre-generated” AI content mean?

Pre-generated content is shipped with the game after being created with AI assistance during development. Examples can include artwork, sound, narrative, localization, or other assets prepared before release. The player receives those assets as part of the installed product rather than requesting them from an AI system during play.

What does “live-generated” AI content mean?

Live-generated content is produced by an AI system while the game is running. Valve’s survey asks developers using this approach to explain guardrails intended to prevent illegal output. That extra explanation recognizes that a system generating material in response to player actions can create different safety risks from fixed assets included in the build.

Does Valve approve or reject AI content differently?

Valve says its prerelease review evaluates AI-generated output “the same way we evaluate all non-AI content.” The disclosure therefore tells you that a qualifying process was used; it is not a statement that a title received a special quality rating or an endorsement of its creative choices.

How can I avoid AI-generated games on Steam right now?

Because there is no documented global exclusion control, use a title-by-title workflow. The following steps reduce uncertainty without treating an unverified tag as definitive.

  1. Start with normal search filters. On Steam’s search results, use the tag list on the right-hand side to narrow the field by genre, theme, or other characteristics. This is useful for reducing the number of pages you must inspect, but tags describe what a game is like, not how its assets were produced.
  2. Open the store page for each candidate. Look for the game’s available AI-related disclosure information and read what the developer says was generated, whether it was pre-generated or live-generated, and how it appears in play. A disclosure about one asset type does not automatically mean every asset was made with AI.
  3. Read the developer’s wording carefully. Distinguish AI-assisted development from content that players actually consume. Valve’s survey concerns “the use of AI in creating content that ships with your game, and is consumed by players,” so a developer’s statement about internal tools may not describe the same thing as in-game generated material.
  4. Check the game’s announcements and update notes. A title can add features after launch. If a developer describes a later text, image, voice, or procedural-generation feature, treat that newer notice as relevant even if the original store description was silent.
  5. Use community tags only as leads. Players, developers, and moderators can apply Steam tags, and those tags influence search and recommendations. Search for terms that other users associate with AI, but verify any result against the store page or the developer’s own statement before deciding.
  6. Record your decision outside Steam. If you are maintaining a personal avoid list, note the title, the date you checked, and the specific disclosure you found. Steam does not document a subscription-wide rule that automatically blocks future AI disclosures, so a private list is more dependable than assuming your previous search settings will catch every new release.

What can Steam’s normal tags and content preferences actually do?

Tags and content preferences solve different problems from AI avoidance. Knowing their limits prevents a mature-content setting from being mistaken for a production-method filter.

Tag search narrows discovery

Steam’s tag interface lets you select multiple descriptive labels to narrow search results. Tags can cover genres, themes, mechanics, and other characteristics. They are community-influenced metadata, not a complete record of whether a developer used generative tools, so a game can be missing an AI-related label or carry one that reflects opinion rather than a verified disclosure.

Content preferences manage stated content categories

Steam documents preferences that filter or allow categories such as violence or nudity and that show warnings based on mature-content descriptors. The documented preference categories do not include generative AI. Turning them on or off can change which kinds of mature material appear in your store, but it will not identify games according to their development process.

Which method is best for finding or excluding AI-using games?

The practical options differ in coverage, effort, reliability, and purpose. No option currently combines complete coverage with automatic exclusion.

Method Coverage Effort Reliability for AI use Primary purpose
Developer AI disclosure on a store listing Individual titles where qualifying information is shown Manual page review Higher than community metadata because it is the developer’s disclosure, but it depends on what is reported and displayed Transparency about AI-created content
Steam tag search Titles carrying selected tags Low for broad searches; repeated searches may be needed Incomplete and potentially subjective Narrowing results by genre, theme, or other descriptors
Community-applied AI-related tag Only games that users, developers, or moderators have tagged Low to moderate Not proof that a game uses AI, and absence is not proof that it does not Finding titles that warrant closer inspection
Content preferences Games matching supported mature-content categories Set once, then applied by Steam Not applicable to AI production because AI is not a documented category Filtering or allowing violence, nudity, and similar content warnings

How reliable are Steam’s AI disclosures?

A developer disclosure is the strongest official signal available in the documented Steam process, but it still has a defined scope. The survey asks about AI in content that ships with the game and is consumed by players; it does not promise a searchable, exhaustive catalog of every experiment, tool, or internal workflow used by every studio.

For example, a team could use an AI tool to brainstorm internally without shipping generated material. That situation is different from shipping AI-created character portraits or allowing a live model to produce dialogue during play. Your decision should therefore be based on the specific content described, not on the assumption that any mention of AI means the entire game was generated.

Conversely, a blank or hard-to-find disclosure should not be treated as a guarantee of zero AI involvement. The consumer documentation does not state that every historical or future title will expose a complete, standardized field that can be queried from search. When the distinction matters to you, seek a direct statement from the developer or publisher and keep the date of that statement.

What should I do when a game has no clear AI information?

Use an evidence threshold that matches your reason for avoiding the title. If you need certainty for professional, ethical, or accessibility reasons, do not infer an answer from screenshots, writing style, review comments, or a missing tag.

  • Ask the developer or publisher. A concise support request can ask whether shipped artwork, audio, text, localization, voices, or live systems were generated with AI and whether the answer applies to the current version.
  • Check version-specific announcements. Early-access builds, expansions, and post-launch updates can change what players receive. Note whether the statement covers the release you intend to play.
  • Separate licensed or conventional procedural systems from generative models. A game may assemble handcrafted parts or use deterministic procedural rules without using a generative model. Do not label those systems AI-generated unless the developer does.
  • Choose a precautionary rule. If no answer is available, you can skip the title rather than treating uncertainty as approval. That is a personal decision, not a Steam filter setting.

Can I hide an AI-tagged game from my Steam recommendations or library?

Steam’s documented controls do not provide a rule that automatically hides every title identified as using generative AI. You can remove or ignore individual products through the ordinary controls Steam offers for games you do not want to see, but those actions do not create a reusable AI-production filter for other titles.

Recommendations are influenced by tags and other store signals. Because those signals are not a verified AI-use database, hiding one tagged game will not ensure that similarly produced games disappear from your recommendations. Manual inspection remains necessary for each title that matters to you.

Could Steam add an AI-specific filter later?

Steam’s interface and disclosure practices can change, and the absence of a documented control today is not a promise that Valve will never add one. The available documentation does not provide a dated changelog establishing whether a brand-new consumer toggle appeared after a particular update. Before relying on an AI exclusion rule for a time-sensitive purchase, open the current Steam store preferences and search interface and confirm what categories are actually listed.

If Valve introduces a dedicated preference, check whether it covers pre-generated content, live-generated content, or both. A filter limited to one category would not necessarily exclude games using the other.

What is the most dependable personal workflow?

For a small wishlist, inspect every store page and save the developer’s wording. For a large library or frequent purchases, combine broad tag searches with a short review checklist: identify the current version, locate the AI disclosure, classify the use as pre-generated or live-generated, and record any unanswered question. Revisit titles after major updates because a game can add live generation or new shipped assets after its initial release.

This approach takes more time than a single checkbox, but it matches what Steam’s documented systems can actually establish. Tags help you find candidates; disclosures provide the most direct official information; neither currently supplies an automatic, complete hide list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where on a Steam store page can I find a game’s AI disclosure?

Steam does not describe one universal consumer-facing location or layout for every disclosure. Open the current store page and look through the game’s descriptive and content-information areas; if the information is absent or ambiguous, ask the developer rather than assuming a negative answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does AI-assisted game development mean the game is an AI-generated game?

Not necessarily. A developer may use AI privately for brainstorming or production assistance without shipping generated material, while another title may include AI-created assets or live-generated dialogue that players directly consume. The relevant distinction is what content reaches the player.

Can Steam’s mature-content settings block games made with AI?

No. Those settings address supported categories such as violence and nudity and the warnings attached to them. They are independent of the methods a studio used to create its content.

Are Steam community tags enough evidence to boycott or buy a game?

No. Tags can be added by developers, players, and moderators and may be incomplete, outdated, or opinion-based. Use them to identify titles for further checking, then rely on a specific developer disclosure or other direct statement.
