Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Sometimes—but the fact that a ZIP extractor runs in a browser does not tell you whether it sends files to a server, and local processing does not make an archive trustworthy. Check the specific tool’s privacy and processing details, be cautious with unfamiliar archives, and treat extracted files as untrusted.
What “in the browser” does—and does not—tell you
A browser-based interface can be used by a tool that processes files locally or by a service that uploads them for server-side processing. The interface alone does not establish which happens. OWASP’s file-processing guidance identifies security risks but does not certify any particular browser extractor as local or safe.
If privacy matters, look for the tool’s documentation and privacy details explaining where processing occurs and whether files leave your device. Do not assume that a claim about client-side processing has been independently verified. Conversely, client-side JavaScript checks can be bypassed in a service that accepts uploads; that warning is not proof that a particular browser-only utility uploads files.
What can go wrong when extracting a ZIP?
Files written outside the intended folder
An archive can contain entry paths crafted with sequences such as ../. If extraction software does not validate or ignore those paths, files may be written outside the selected destination—a vulnerability commonly called ZIP Slip. OWASP’s file-upload testing guidance discusses this risk; its ASVS 5.0 file-handling requirements say server-side decompression should ignore user-provided path information.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Symlinks inside the archive
Symbolic links can point to locations outside an extraction folder. Risks arise if an extractor preserves or follows them without appropriate validation. OWASP ASVS advises rejecting compressed uploads containing symlinks unless they are specifically required and allowlisted.
Excessive resource use
A decompression bomb can expand into far more data than its compressed size suggests, consuming memory, storage, or processing capacity. A small-looking archive is not necessarily small to unpack. OWASP’s File Upload Cheat Sheet recommends limits that account for decompressed data and secure ZIP-size calculation.

Malicious files and vulnerable parsers
An archive can contain harmful files, and the software that parses archives can itself have vulnerabilities. Successful extraction does not mean the contents are safe. OWASP recommends antivirus or sandbox scanning when available as an added precaution, not as proof that files are harmless. Its guidance on malicious file uploads also discusses active content and parser risks.
How to handle an unfamiliar ZIP more safely
- Check the source. If you do not trust where the archive came from, avoid opening it if possible. A “.zip” extension alone does not establish that a file is benign or even that its contents are what you expect.
- Check the extractor. Prefer maintained software. If using a browser tool, read its documentation and privacy details to determine whether processing is local or server-side; do not infer this from the interface.
- Use a cautious destination. Extract into a new, dedicated folder rather than a location containing important files. Stop if the tool reports path or symlink warnings.
- Watch for abnormal behavior. Stop extraction if the archive expands unexpectedly or causes unusual memory, storage, or processing use. Do not override warnings just to complete the extraction.
- Inspect before opening. Treat extracted files as untrusted. Do not run programs, enable active content, or open unexpected files simply because extraction succeeded.
- Scan when appropriate. For work or other higher-risk files, use available antivirus or sandbox scanning before opening them. A clean scan is an additional check, not a guarantee.
What organizations and service operators should check
If your organization processes user-uploaded archives, do not rely on browser-side restrictions as a security boundary: client-side JavaScript checks can be bypassed. Apply controls on the processing side, including limits that account for decompressed size, safe handling of archive paths, and rejection of symlinks unless they are necessary and explicitly allowlisted. Keep archive-processing software maintained, and use scanning or sandboxing where appropriate. OWASP’s upload guidance covers size limits and secure ZIP handling, while ASVS 5.0 addresses decompression paths and symlinks.
