Samsung Messages does not document a setting for choosing any text color you want. You can customize an individual conversation’s background, and some devices offer bubble-opacity or text-contrast controls. First check which messaging app is installed: Samsung’s customization instructions apply to Samsung Messages on Android 11 or older.
What you can change in Samsung Messages
Samsung’s support page says you can set a custom wallpaper or background color for individual message threads. That is different from changing the color of the message text itself. Samsung documents text-contrast adjustments on some devices, but not a control for selecting an arbitrary text color. The available options depend on your device and may not all appear.
Customize a Samsung Messages conversation
-
Open the conversation in Samsung Messages.
-
Tap More options, shown as three vertical dots.
-
Tap Customize wallpaper or Customize chat room. The wording varies by device.

Samsung’s Messages support page has the applicable instructions and caveat.

Check whether you are using Samsung Messages or Google Messages
Menu names differ between apps, so confirm the app before following steps. Samsung Messages’ availability is also changing: a Tom’s Guide report published April 6, 2026, said Samsung announced discontinuation starting in July 2026 and recommended switching to Google Messages. Because that date has passed, the report is not confirmation of the app’s status on your device today; check Samsung’s current guidance or your Galaxy phone’s available messaging apps.
Change a conversation theme in Google Messages
If your phone uses Google Messages, do not look for Samsung’s Customize wallpaper menu. Google’s instructions use a separate per-conversation theme setting:
