You can present a different MAC address, and modern Apple and Android devices can do this automatically for Wi-Fi privacy. But changing an address is not the same as becoming anonymous: it can affect how a network recognizes your device, and MAC filtering is not a reliable security boundary.
What changing or spoofing a MAC address means
A MAC address is an identifier used by a device’s network interface on a local network. Spoofing means presenting an address other than the interface’s usual hardware address. Randomization is a built-in privacy feature that uses a private address according to the operating system’s rules. The terms are related, but automatic randomization is not necessarily the same process or purpose as manually changing an address.
For Wi-Fi, current mobile operating systems commonly manage this privacy behavior in their settings. The exact controls and behavior vary by platform, device, and operating-system version.
How Apple handles private Wi-Fi addresses
Apple says its devices use a different private Wi-Fi address for each Wi-Fi network by default. On iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia 15, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2 or later, supported devices offer Off, Fixed, and Rotating options. Apple’s Private Wi-Fi Address guidance describes the available settings and device-specific controls.

| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Off | Uses the device’s hardware MAC address. |
| Fixed | Uses a private address that does not rotate. |
| Rotating | Changes the private address every two weeks. |
For a new network secured with WPA2 or stronger, Apple selects Fixed by default. For a weakly secured or open network, it selects Rotating by default. These defaults and options apply to the supported operating-system versions listed above; older systems may show different controls.
Where to find the setting
- iPhone, iPad, or Apple Vision Pro: Open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the network’s details, then choose Private Wi-Fi Address.
- Mac with macOS Sequoia 15 or later: Open System Settings > Wi-Fi, open the network’s details, then choose the setting next to Private Wi-Fi Address.
- Apple Watch: Apple lists corresponding Wi-Fi settings, with availability depending on the watch and software version.
A school- or employer-managed device may restrict the control; contact its administrator if it is unavailable. Resetting network settings or erasing the device causes the next connection to use a different private address. On newer versions, forgetting a network ordinarily forgets its private address, subject to Apple’s 24-hour condition.

How Android handles MAC randomization
Android 10 and later use randomized MAC addresses by default. On supported devices, you can turn randomization on or off for an individual Wi-Fi network from that network’s details. Menu names and placement vary by manufacturer; Android’s MAC randomization behavior documentation explains the platform behavior.
Android’s default is persistent randomization: the address is derived from network-profile information such as the SSID and security type and generally remains associated with that profile. Android 12 and later use non-persistent randomization only in limited circumstances. The settings screen controls randomization as a whole; it does not let users choose between persistent and non-persistent modes.

What about Windows?
Windows has connection and random hardware address settings, but whether a control appears can depend on the Windows version and Wi-Fi adapter. Start with Microsoft’s current guide to connecting to a Wi-Fi network in Windows and check the options shown on your specific PC rather than assuming every device has the same menu.
What can change when your MAC address changes?
A network may use an address to recognize a device or apply a remembered behavior. Android notes that a persistent address can help a network remember a device, avoid repeatedly showing a login screen, or apply parental controls. If the address changes, the network may treat the device as new, so a saved login experience or other address-based behavior may no longer work as expected.

Does changing your MAC address make you anonymous?
No. A private or randomized MAC address limits the usefulness of one stable Wi-Fi identifier; it does not prevent a network or observer from correlating other information. RFC 9724 notes that identifiers such as DHCP client identifiers can still be correlated and cautions against relying on privacy tools at only one protocol layer. MAC randomization is not anonymity and is not a substitute for a VPN.

MAC filtering allows a router to permit or block devices based on their addresses, but an address is not proof of identity. Apple warns that MAC addresses can be copied, spoofed, or changed, and recommends disabling MAC filtering as a security measure. Its router and access point guidance also says filtering does not prevent observers from monitoring or intercepting network traffic. Use appropriate Wi-Fi security settings instead; network administrators should keep router firmware current and consult the manufacturer’s configuration documentation.

Before changing an address
- Check whether the device already uses a per-network private or randomized address; that may meet the privacy need without a manual change.
- Consider whether the network relies on a stable address for device recognition, login behavior, or parental controls.
- Do not treat a changed address as proof that you cannot be recognized or tracked by other means.
- If you manage the network, do not rely on MAC filtering as authentication; configure appropriate Wi-Fi security and keep router firmware current.
Whether a particular address change is lawful depends on jurisdiction, network ownership, and intended use. The platform and standards guidance cited here does not establish a universal legal rule.
