Usually, no. A generic Bluetooth speaker is not established by LG as an extra surround speaker for an LG soundbar. LG’s Bluetooth documentation describes the soundbar as the device that receives audio from a phone, television, or another source, and one LG manual explicitly says that Bluetooth multi-connection is not supported. For genuine rear channels, you generally need the model-specific LG wireless receiver and the rear speakers supplied or approved for that soundbar.
You may still use a separate Bluetooth speaker in two different ways: pair it directly with a compatible LG television, or use it independently for music. Neither option should be assumed to create synchronized rear sound with the soundbar. Your exact soundbar model, its manual, and its listed accessory kit determine what is supported.
What does “add a Bluetooth speaker” to an LG soundbar actually mean?
People use this question to describe three different setups, and each has a different answer:

This requires a compatible rear-speaker system, not merely another Bluetooth playback device.
- Another speaker for television audio: You want the television to send sound to a portable or bookshelf Bluetooth speaker. The television may be able to do this, but it can switch away from the soundbar rather than feed both devices together.
- Music playback: You want to play music from a phone through the soundbar. In this case, the phone is the Bluetooth source and the soundbar is the receiving device; no additional speaker is being added.
Identify which result you need before buying anything. A speaker that works for the second or third scenario is not automatically usable as a rear channel in the first.

Why won’t a generic Bluetooth speaker normally join the soundbar as a rear channel?
Bluetooth pairing is directional. In LG’s Bluetooth soundbar documentation, a phone, television, or other source device pairs to the soundbar so the soundbar can receive audio. The manual states: “This product cannot operate a Bluetooth device, and multi-connection is not supported.” That wording means the soundbar is not documented as a Bluetooth transmitter that can accept an arbitrary speaker as a second, synchronized output.
A portable speaker can be perfectly compatible with a phone and still be incompatible with an LG soundbar. Pairing menus, Bluetooth profiles, timing, channel mapping, and volume control all have to be implemented on both sides. A normal speaker also does not know which audio should be sent to a left-rear or right-rear channel. Without an LG-supported receiver and matching speakers, the soundbar has no documented way to assign those channels.
Even if a speaker appears in a Bluetooth scan, a successful pairing prompt would not prove that it can function as surround sound. It might become a second full-range playback device, introduce a delay, or fail after pairing. LG does not present generic Bluetooth speakers as interchangeable rear units.

Which LG soundbars can use wireless rear speakers?
Rear expansion is model-specific. LG’s support guidance says menus and supported accessories vary by model, so the model number on the soundbar and the accessory list in its manual are decisive. Look for an LG rear-speaker kit explicitly listed for that exact soundbar rather than a kit that merely looks similar or uses the same connector.
The SP7R example
For the SP7R, the rear speakers connect by cable to a dedicated wireless receiver. The receiver then links to the soundbar. LG warns: “Please only use the speakers provided with the product.” This is a different architecture from pairing a portable Bluetooth speaker directly with the soundbar: the receiver handles the wireless link, while the approved speakers and wiring provide the individual rear channels.

What to verify for any other model
- Read the soundbar’s owner’s manual for a rear-speaker, surround, or wireless-receiver section.
- Check the exact model number, including regional suffixes. Similar-looking soundbars can have different accessory compatibility.
- Confirm whether the listed kit includes a receiver, speaker cables, and both rear speakers.
- Follow the manual’s speaker placement and terminal instructions; do not substitute a portable speaker because it uses Bluetooth.
If LG does not list a rear kit for your model, treat that as an unsupported expansion rather than assuming that a third-party Bluetooth product will fill the gap.
How do I install supported LG wireless rear speakers?
Compatible LG rear units are designed to pair with the soundbar automatically. The general process below applies to supported systems; the exact button names and cable layout can differ by model.
- Power every component. Turn on the soundbar, its wireless subwoofer if supplied, and the rear-speaker receiver or rear speakers. Place the units close together during initial pairing.
- Connect the rear speakers as specified. On systems such as the SP7R, connect each speaker cable to the wireless receiver and match the positive and negative terminals. Do not reverse the terminals or use unapproved speakers.
- Wait for automatic pairing. A compatible receiver normally links to the soundbar without adding it through the soundbar’s ordinary Bluetooth device list.
- Read the status LED. LG identifies a solid green LED as a successful connection. A red LED indicates that the speaker or receiver is not connected correctly.
- Re-pair if the LED remains red. Turn the soundbar off. Press the Pairing button on the rear unit until its LED blinks green, then turn the soundbar back on and wait for a solid green indicator.
- Move the equipment after confirmation. Once pairing succeeds, place the rear speakers at the recommended listening positions and keep the receiver within a reliable range.
During setup, keep the receiver and soundbar away from Wi-Fi routers, microwave ovens, and other sources of radio interference. Pairing them close together first separates a range problem from a configuration problem.
Can I connect the extra Bluetooth speaker to my LG TV instead?
Often, yes, if the television supports Bluetooth audio. LG’s television guidance allows you to pair a Bluetooth speaker and select Bluetooth as the television’s sound output. This changes the signal path: the television sends audio to the separate speaker instead of treating that speaker as a rear extension of the soundbar.
Typical television steps
- Put the Bluetooth speaker into its pairing mode according to the speaker’s instructions.
- Open the television’s Sound Out menu.
- Choose the Bluetooth speaker from the available device list.
- Confirm the television’s audio output and test speech, music, and volume control.
Menu labels vary by LG television model and software version. The television article does not promise simultaneous playback through both a soundbar and a Bluetooth speaker. In many setups, selecting Bluetooth changes the output away from the soundbar. If the television offers a separate “multiple audio output” option, check that feature in its own manual; do not infer that it will synchronize the two devices merely because both can be paired.

How do I play music from a phone through the LG soundbar?
For music, the supported relationship is simple: the phone is the source and the soundbar is the Bluetooth receiver.
- Press the soundbar’s input or function control until Bluetooth or BT/READY appears.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or other source device.
- Select the LG soundbar from the discovered devices and accept the pairing request.
- Start playback on the phone and adjust listening level with the soundbar or phone controls.
If the phone cannot find the soundbar, make sure the soundbar is in pairing-ready mode rather than connected to another source. Turning off Bluetooth on a previously paired phone can also free the connection. This process sends the phone’s audio into the soundbar; it does not add a second wireless speaker to the soundbar.
Which option fits your goal?
| Goal | Best-supported route | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Add true rear or surround channels | Buy the LG rear-speaker kit listed for the exact soundbar model and connect the supplied speakers to the specified wireless receiver. | Third-party Bluetooth speakers are not shown as interchangeable rear speakers. |
| Play television audio through a separate Bluetooth speaker | Pair the speaker with the television and choose Bluetooth in the television’s Sound Out menu. | The television may switch away from the soundbar; synchronized dual output depends on the television model. |
| Play music from a phone through the soundbar | Put the soundbar in BT/READY mode and pair the phone or other source. | This sends audio into the soundbar and does not create an additional speaker. |
What should I check before buying a rear-speaker kit?
Use this checklist while you have the soundbar’s label and manual in front of you:
- Exact model: Record the complete model number from the soundbar or its packaging.
- Accessory listing: Confirm that LG names a rear-speaker kit for that model, not just for a related series.
- Receiver requirement: Determine whether the kit uses a separate wireless receiver and whether it is included.
- Speaker requirement: Check whether the manual requires the speakers supplied with the kit. For the SP7R, LG explicitly says to use only the provided speakers.
- Regional documentation: Use the manual and support page for your market because menus and available accessories can vary by region.
- Placement and power: Verify that both rear positions have convenient power and that cable runs from the speakers to the receiver are practical.
If any of these details is unclear, contact LG support with the model number before purchasing. A listing that says “wireless” or “Bluetooth” without naming your exact soundbar is not enough evidence of compatibility.

How do I troubleshoot a supported rear system that is not connecting?
The LED is red
A red LED indicates that the rear speaker or receiver is not connected correctly. Power off the soundbar, press the rear unit’s Pairing button until the LED blinks green, turn the soundbar on again, and wait for a solid green light. Keep the components close while repeating the process.
The LED never turns green
Check every cable at the receiver, including positive and negative terminal placement. Confirm that the receiver belongs to the same model-specific kit and that the soundbar and receiver are receiving power. A generic Bluetooth speaker cannot substitute for a missing approved rear unit.
Pairing works, but sound drops out
Relocate the receiver away from Wi-Fi routers, microwave ovens, and other radio interference. After a stable close-range pairing, move it gradually toward its intended position. If dropouts persist only at the final location, the issue is likely range or interference rather than the pairing sequence.
The rear speakers are connected but seem silent
Play content that actually contains surround information and verify the soundbar’s listening mode and rear-level settings in its model-specific manual. Stereo music may not produce obvious rear effects. Do not assume silence proves that a portable Bluetooth speaker can be added; it may simply be a content or configuration issue.
What mistakes should I avoid?
- Buying by Bluetooth version alone: A newer Bluetooth number does not make a speaker a compatible rear channel.
- Using the soundbar’s device list as proof: A device appearing during discovery does not establish channel assignment or synchronization.
- Mixing speakers from different kits: LG’s SP7R guidance specifically limits use to the supplied speakers.
- Expecting television dual output: Pairing a speaker to the TV may replace the soundbar output instead of duplicating it.
- Ignoring polarity: On receiver-based kits, match positive and negative terminals exactly as marked.
- Testing from across the room first: Perform initial pairing nearby, then address placement and interference.
The safest path is to decide whether you need surround channels, independent television playback, or phone music, and then use the connection method designed for that job.

Frequently asked questions
Will a Bluetooth 5 speaker work with an LG soundbar?
Bluetooth version numbers do not establish compatibility. The soundbar must support the required speaker role, channel mapping, and synchronized output; LG’s cited documentation does not describe a generic speaker as a rear-channel device.
Can I use two portable Bluetooth speakers as left and right rears?
Not through the ordinary LG soundbar Bluetooth connection described here. The documented rear arrangement uses a model-specific wireless receiver and approved speakers, while a television’s Bluetooth output is generally a separate listening route.
Does the rear-speaker kit need to be the same brand as the soundbar?
For LG systems that require a specified kit, the important requirement is the exact model-approved receiver and speakers, not simply a product carrying the same brand name. Read the compatibility list for your soundbar before ordering.
Why does my TV connect to the Bluetooth speaker but not play through both devices?
The TV’s Bluetooth selection controls its sound output and may switch away from the soundbar. Unless your television model explicitly supports simultaneous outputs, pairing success alone does not promise synchronized playback.
