Usually not. An independent Android music player cannot use Google’s public YouTube interfaces to turn YouTube Music into an unrestricted audio stream with separate tracks, offline files, or background playback. Google’s policies prohibit those functions for API clients, and the Android Player API was deprecated in 2023 and removed from Google’s current policy references.
You can still stream YouTube Music without downloading songs. The supported choices are the official YouTube Music app or a documented hardware integration, such as a compatible Linkplay network player controlled through the WiiM app. In both cases, playback happens over Wi-Fi or mobile data rather than by first saving a song in a folder on your phone.
What does “stream without downloading” mean?
Streaming means the service delivers playback data while you listen. Your Android phone or network player may temporarily buffer data in memory or short-lived cache, but you do not receive a user-accessible song file that can be opened in another music app. Downloading is a separate, deliberate feature that stores tracks for later listening when a supported account, device and app allow it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis distinction matters because a third-party player might advertise itself as a YouTube Music client while actually trying to capture, separate, cache or replay YouTube audiovisual content. Those are the functions Google’s developer rules restrict. A player that simply controls an approved device or launches an official playback path is a different model from an app that extracts audio and feeds it to its own player engine.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Can a normal independent Android player play YouTube Music?
Not through the public YouTube API in the way most people mean. A conventional Android player would need access to an audio-only stream, permission to keep playing when the YouTube interface is no longer visible, and often a way to cache songs. Google’s published policies disallow those capabilities for API clients without prior written approval.
Audio-track separation is restricted
Google’s API policies say clients must not offer users separate audio tracks. YouTube content is delivered as audiovisual media, so an app cannot use the public interface as a lawful source of isolated music tracks for its own playback queue.
Offline playback is restricted
API clients must not download, import, back up, cache or store copies of YouTube audiovisual content without prior written approval. They also must not make that content available for offline playback. This is why an app that promises to save YouTube Music songs for use without a connection is outside the normal public-API use case.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Background playback is restricted
Google’s compliance guidance says API clients must not offer background play of the YouTube video player. An unofficial player that keeps YouTube Music audio running after the screen is locked, while another app is in front, or while the YouTube interface is absent would be implementing precisely the kind of behavior the rule addresses.
What happened to the Android Player API?
The Android Player API is not a current escape route for third-party music apps. Google’s revision history states that references to the Android Player API were removed from the Developer Policies and Required Minimum Functionality because the API was deprecated in 2023 and is no longer available.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
That status has two practical consequences. First, old tutorials or GitHub projects that tell developers to build around the Android Player API may describe an interface that no longer exists. Second, an app that appears to work today may depend on undocumented behavior, screen automation or a server-side workaround rather than a stable, supported integration. Such workarounds can stop functioning when Google changes authentication, playback endpoints or policy enforcement.
Which options are officially supported?
There are two supported patterns: play in the official YouTube Music app, or use a documented partner/device integration. Neither requires you to download songs before ordinary connected playback.

How do I stream YouTube Music through a compatible WiiM or Linkplay device?
YouTube Music’s Android help documentation describes compatible Linkplay devices that can access and play a user’s YouTube Music library through the WiiM app. The phone is used to configure and control playback; the music is streamed to the supported network device.
- Confirm compatibility. Check the exact Linkplay hardware model, firmware and current YouTube Music support in the device’s documentation. “Linkplay-compatible” is not a guarantee that every model has identical services.
- Connect the player to your network. Complete the manufacturer’s setup so the device and your Android phone can communicate over the same available network. Use the connection method specified for that model.
- Install WiiM Home. Get the WiiM Home app on Android or iOS and finish its device-discovery process.
- Select YouTube Music. In WiiM Home, open the music-service list and choose YouTube Music.
- Authorize your account. Follow the sign-in and consent screen, then approve access for the account whose library you want to use. Do not enter credentials into an unrelated player that merely claims compatibility.
- Start playback. Select a playlist, album, station or other available library item and choose the Linkplay device as the playback destination.
- Keep the connection available. Playback remains a network stream. If the phone loses control access, the device loses Wi-Fi, or the service session expires, playback can stop even though no song file was downloaded.
The exact menus can change with WiiM Home and device firmware updates. If YouTube Music is missing from the service list, verify the model, region, account state and app version before assuming that every Linkplay product supports it.
Does the official YouTube Music app download songs during normal streaming?
Normal connected playback is streaming: the app receives the content over Wi-Fi or mobile data while you listen. You do not need to create an offline download first. YouTube Music treats downloads as a separate feature for supported Premium and device scenarios, so the availability of offline listening does not define whether online playback works.

Why do unofficial players sometimes appear to work?
An unofficial app can present a web view, control an already-authorized session, or rely on a server that changes how requests are handled. A short period of success does not establish that the method is an approved API integration or that it will continue working.
- Web-wrapper behavior: the app may be displaying or automating an official web experience rather than supplying its own audio engine.
- Undocumented endpoints: a developer may call interfaces intended for Google’s own clients. These can change without notice and may trigger account or playback errors.
- Local caching: storing content for replay can conflict with the rule against downloading, importing, backing up, caching or storing copies.
- Audio extraction: separating an audio track from audiovisual content is specifically restricted for API clients.
- Background tricks: keeping a hidden video session alive is not the same as having permission to offer background play.
These implementations also create practical risks: an app may stop after an Android update, lose sign-in after an authentication change, expose more account data than expected, or violate the service terms attached to your account.
How can I tell whether an Android player is a supported solution?
Use the following checks before signing in or paying for a player.
- Look for first-party documentation. A genuine integration should be described by YouTube Music or the device maker, not only by an app-store listing.
- Identify the playback path. The documentation should explain whether the app controls a compatible device or attempts to extract YouTube audio into its own player.
- Check feature claims. Promises of unrestricted audio-only playback, background play and offline saving from a free independent client are warning signs because those are the capabilities Google’s API rules limit.
- Check account handling. Prefer an authorization screen that clearly identifies the service and requested permissions. Never send your Google password to an unrelated developer’s form.
- Check model-level compatibility. For network players, support can vary by exact model, firmware, country and service account. Confirm those details before purchase.
- Expect policy dependence. Even an app that uses a documented interface must follow current API requirements. A vendor that cannot explain its supported integration is a poor long-term choice.
What should I do when playback fails?
YouTube Music is not listed in the device app
Update the controller app and device firmware, then check the exact model’s supported-service list. Confirm that the account region and service availability match the documentation. If the model is not listed as compatible, installing a different Android player is unlikely to create an officially supported path.

Authorization loops or immediately signs out
Complete the sign-in flow in the system browser or the official authorization screen, then retry from the device app. Remove an old, failed authorization only through the account’s recognized connected-app controls. Avoid entering credentials into an app that bypasses the normal consent screen.
Playback stops when the phone screen locks
For an independent API client, this may reflect the background-play restriction rather than an Android setting. With a supported network player, confirm that playback was handed to the device and that the device remains connected to Wi-Fi; the controller phone should not be required to stream a local copy.
A previously working app stopped after an update
Check the developer’s release notes and Google’s current API documentation. If the app depended on an undocumented endpoint or the deprecated Android Player API, there may be no stable repair. Move playback to the official YouTube Music app or a documented compatible device instead of repeatedly reinstalling an unverified client.
Playback uses mobile data unexpectedly
Streaming over a mobile connection is still streaming, but it consumes the data allowance of the phone or network player. Switch to Wi-Fi, review Android’s per-app data controls, or use an officially supported offline feature when your account and device provide one.

Which choice fits each listening goal?
| Your goal | Best-supported approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Listen on an Android phone while online | Official YouTube Music app | It is the supported client and does not require a pre-existing download. |
| Control playback on separate network audio hardware | Compatible Linkplay device with WiiM Home | YouTube Music documents this device-and-controller pattern. |
| Use a custom audio player with extracted tracks | No unrestricted public-API solution | Audio separation, storage and background playback are restricted. |
| Listen without a network connection | Official YouTube Music download feature when available | Offline playback is a separate supported feature, not something a third-party API client may add. |
What is the bottom line for Android users?
If “third-party player” means an unrelated Android app that replaces YouTube Music, assume the answer is no: the public interfaces do not authorize unrestricted audio-only, offline or background playback. The Android Player API is deprecated and no longer available, so older guides are not a dependable foundation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a YouTube Music Premium subscription just to stream online?
Online playback in the official app is distinct from downloading songs. The app shows which features your account and region include; Premium and device conditions generally apply to supported download scenarios rather than to the basic concept of connected streaming.
Can a Linkplay player continue after I close the WiiM app?
When playback has been handed to a compatible network device, the device is the playback endpoint and the phone is primarily a controller. Whether it continues after the controller app closes depends on the model, firmware and service session, so check that model’s current documentation.
Will an unofficial player’s downloaded cache appear in YouTube Music?
No. A third-party cache is not an official YouTube Music download library, and copying or exposing YouTube audiovisual content is restricted by Google’s API rules. Treat claims of portable, transferable YouTube Music files as a warning sign.
Is casting the same as using a third-party YouTube Music player?
No. Casting or handing playback to a supported device keeps the service and device integration in the documented path. A separate app that extracts audio and feeds it into its own player is a different implementation with different policy restrictions.
