Yes—the $399 Reachy Mini Lite can run AI locally, but the AI runs on a connected Mac or PC rather than inside the robot. Hugging Face and Pollen Robotics describe the Lite computer as “Your Mac/PC as brain.” The robot connects by USB and supplies the motors, camera, microphones, speaker and six-degree-of-freedom head; your computer runs the model. A cloud service is optional unless the particular model or application calls a cloud API. The $499 Reachy Mini Wireless is the documented self-contained alternative, adding a Raspberry Pi CM4, Wi-Fi and battery operation. Neither product page supplies a controlled benchmark for local-versus-cloud speed, accuracy or operating cost, so those results depend on your computer, model and network.
What exactly is the $399 robot kit?
The $399 price identifies the Reachy Mini Lite configuration from Hugging Face and Pollen Robotics. The listed price is before taxes and shipping. It is an expressive, open-source robot intended for human-robot interaction, creative coding and AI experimentation, with the same core motion capabilities as the Wireless model.
Lite is a tethered design. Its official comparison labels the buyer’s Mac or PC as the robot’s “brain,” and the connection is USB. The robot provides the physical interface for an AI application:

- Microphones for audio input.
- A speaker for audio output.
- Six-degree-of-freedom head movement.
- The motors and mechanical control needed to express the model’s output.
Both configurations are listed at approximately 11 inches (28 cm) tall and 3.3 pounds (1.5 kg). The Lite’s computer is not a hidden cloud subscription or an onboard general-purpose computer; it is the external computer you connect to it.

Can Reachy Mini Lite run an AI model locally?
Yes. “Locally” means the model performs inference on the attached Mac, Linux computer or other compatible PC, with the robot supplying sensor data and executing movement or audio responses. The Lite product description does not state that a cloud account is required.
A typical local loop looks like this:
- The camera, microphones or another sensor produces input.
- The software running on your computer passes that input to a model installed on that computer.
- The model returns a classification, generated text, speech decision or other result.
- The robot-control layer converts the result into movement, sound or another action and sends commands over USB.
In this arrangement, the robot itself is not doing all the computation. The important distinction is between local to your setup (the Mac or PC) and onboard (a computer physically mounted in the robot). Reachy Mini Lite supports the first definition, not the second.
What “local” does and does not guarantee
Local inference can keep camera frames, microphone recordings and prompts on your own computer instead of sending them to a provider. It does not automatically make every application private: an application can still upload telemetry or call a remote service if its software is designed to do so. Check the model runtime and the application’s network behavior before treating a project as fully offline.

Local also does not guarantee a particular speed. A small speech, vision or gesture model may run comfortably on one computer while a larger multimodal or generative model may need a faster CPU, a discrete GPU or an accelerator. The available sources do not publish a controlled Reachy Mini benchmark for latency, model accuracy or power use.
Can the $399 model work without Wi-Fi?
It can work without Wi-Fi when the model and control software are installed on the connected computer and the robot communicates over its USB link. The Lite specification describes USB tethering and an external Mac or PC, not a requirement for an internet connection. You still need electricity and a functioning computer, but an internet connection is not inherent to local inference.

Wi-Fi becomes necessary when your chosen software needs an online service—for example, a hosted language model, remote speech recognition, cloud vision endpoint, software download or account authentication. That is a requirement of the application or model, not a requirement imposed by Reachy Mini Lite itself.
Wireless changes the physical arrangement rather than guaranteeing offline AI. The $499 model adds Wi-Fi, battery operation and a Raspberry Pi CM4 on board. You can use its onboard computer for compatible local workloads, or connect it to another computer or online service. A Wireless robot can therefore be more portable, but “has Wi-Fi” should not be read as “must use the cloud.”

What is the difference between Reachy Mini Lite and Reachy Mini Wireless?
The key choice is where inference runs and whether you need a self-contained, battery-powered platform. The documented specifications are:
| Characteristic | Reachy Mini Lite | Reachy Mini Wireless |
|---|---|---|
| Listed price | $399, plus taxes and shipping (Hugging Face listing, 2025) | $499 (Hugging Face listing, 2025) |
| AI-compute location described by the product page | External Mac or PC (“Your Mac/PC as brain”) | Raspberry Pi CM4 onboard; another computer can still be used when a project calls for it |
| Robot connection | USB tether to the external computer | Wi-Fi connectivity is listed |
| Battery operation | Not listed for Lite | Battery operation is listed |
| Sensors and audio listed | Camera, microphones and speaker | Camera, microphones, speaker and accelerometer |
| Head movement | Six degrees of freedom | Six degrees of freedom |
| Approximate size and weight | 11 in (28 cm), 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) | 11 in (28 cm), 3.3 lb (1.5 kg) |
| Best fit | Projects where you already have a capable computer and do not need untethered operation | Portable experiments that benefit from onboard compute, Wi-Fi and battery use |
The $100 difference buys a different computing and connectivity arrangement, not a published guarantee of faster inference or better model accuracy. The sources do not provide a battery-life figure, a local-versus-cloud latency test or a model-compatibility list that would justify such a claim.
How do you set up local AI on Reachy Mini Lite?
The exact installation depends on the robot software and the model you choose, but the reliable setup sequence is the same. Use a model runtime that supports your operating system and model format; do not assume that a model advertised for a cloud API can be downloaded and run locally.

- Choose the workload. Decide whether you need vision classification, object detection, speech recognition, text generation, gesture detection or another task. The input type determines whether you need the camera, microphones or both.
- Check the host computer. Confirm that your Mac or Linux/PC computer has enough memory, storage and processing capacity for the selected model. A model’s own documentation is the authority for CPU, GPU, accelerator and operating-system support.
- Install the local model and runtime. Download the model files and the compatible inference runtime to the host computer. If the runtime offers a local-only mode, enable it and verify that it does not fall back to a hosted endpoint.
- Connect the robot by USB. Attach the Lite to the computer, provide the required power and confirm that the control software can see the camera, microphones, speaker and motor system.
- Map sensor input to inference. Configure the application to send frames or audio to the local runtime. Set practical image resolution, audio sample rate and frame rate so the computer is not processing more data than the model needs.
- Map the result to an action. Define what a detection, transcript or generated response should do: move the head, play speech through the speaker or trigger another robot behavior. Keep movement limits and safe-stop behavior enabled while testing.
- Test with the network disabled. Disconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet after installation and run a short session. A project that continues to recognize inputs and move correctly is using a genuinely local path; an error about authentication or an unreachable endpoint indicates that some component still depends on the cloud.
- Measure your own workload. Record response delay, CPU/GPU use, memory use and temperature for the model and input settings you actually plan to use. These measurements are more meaningful than a generic claim about “AI speed,” because no controlled Reachy Mini local benchmark is published.
What computer or accelerator is suitable for local robot AI?
There is no single minimum computer for every model. The right host is determined by model size, input resolution, desired response time and whether the runtime supports hardware acceleration.
Using a Mac or general-purpose PC
A newer computer with sufficient memory is the simplest route for Lite. CPU-only inference can work for compact classifiers, keyword spotting and modest vision models, while larger language or multimodal models may benefit from a supported GPU or platform-specific acceleration. Keep the model on the computer and send only the sensor data and control messages required by the application.
Using a Raspberry Pi with an accelerator
Raspberry Pi documents a Hailo-8L neural-network inference accelerator rated at 13 TOPS for compatible workloads. Its AI Kit documentation says Raspberry Pi 5 camera applications can use the accelerator for supported post-processing, and notes that the AI Kit is no longer in production; new customers are directed to Raspberry Pi AI HAT+ instead. Compatibility must be checked model by model, because a TOPS rating is not a universal speed measurement.
Google’s AIY Maker Kit guide describes another local approach: a Raspberry Pi paired with a Coral USB Accelerator, camera, microphone, storage and power hardware. The guide covers TensorFlow Lite projects for object, person, pose, voice and sound recognition. This is useful for a DIY robot or an external inference computer, but it does not turn the $399 Lite into an onboard Raspberry Pi system.
| Hardware path | What it can provide | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Mac or PC | Flexible local inference and the easiest Lite setup | Performance depends on the model and the computer’s CPU, GPU, memory and runtime support |
| Reachy Mini Wireless CM4 | Onboard computing, Wi-Fi and battery operation | The product page does not publish a model-performance benchmark |
| Raspberry Pi 5 with Hailo hardware | Accelerated inference for compatible neural-network and camera workloads | The 13-TOPS Hailo-8L figure is a hardware rating, not a Reachy Mini result; the original AI Kit is discontinued |
| Raspberry Pi plus Coral USB Accelerator | Local TensorFlow Lite object, person, pose, voice and sound projects | Requires models and software supported by the Coral/TensorFlow Lite stack |
When would a Reachy project actually need cloud computing?
Cloud computing is required only when a selected application depends on a remote service or when your local hardware cannot run the chosen model and you elect to offload it. Typical triggers include a hosted large language model, an online speech API, a remote vision endpoint or a service that requires account authentication.

Dexter Industries’ EmpathyBot documentation is a concrete example: its emotion-detection workflow requires a Google Cloud Vision API account. That requirement belongs to EmpathyBot’s workflow; it is not a general requirement for Reachy Mini Lite. A different emotion, face or object-recognition model that runs locally could avoid that API, provided the model and runtime support the computer you are using.
Cloud trade-offs
- Connectivity: the robot must reach the provider whenever inference is requested.
- Privacy: images, audio or prompts may leave the local network, depending on the service’s data policy.
- Latency: network transfer and service queues add variable delay; no Reachy-specific comparison is published.
- Cost: an API may charge per request or require a paid account. The cited product information does not establish a recurring cloud price for Reachy projects.
- Capability: hosted models can be much larger than what a small local computer can run, which may justify the trade-off for a particular application.
Which configuration should you choose?
Choose the $399 Lite when you already have a Mac or PC capable of running your intended model, are comfortable with a USB tether and want to control where inference occurs. It is the lower-cost path to local AI because the host computer supplies the compute.
Choose the $499 Wireless when portability, battery operation, Wi-Fi or an onboard Raspberry Pi CM4 matters more than the lowest purchase price. Treat the CM4 as a documented onboard-compute option, not proof that every modern AI model will run acceptably on it.
Choose a cloud API only after checking that a local model cannot meet your capability, speed or hardware requirements, or that the application is explicitly built around that service. If offline operation is a hard requirement, test with networking disabled before you build the rest of the robot behavior around the model.

What are the main failure modes, and how can you diagnose them?
The robot moves, but recognition fails offline
The control path may be local while the AI path still calls a hosted endpoint. Inspect the model configuration for an API URL, account token or online-only feature, then replace it with a locally installed model and runtime that supports the same input.

Inference is too slow
Reduce camera resolution or audio rate, use a smaller model, lower the requested frame rate or move inference to a computer with stronger CPU/GPU support. Do not infer a hardware problem from a single delay; measure preprocessing, model execution and robot-control time separately.
The model cannot load on the Wireless computer
The CM4 may not have enough memory or may lack support for the model’s format and operators. Run that model on an external Mac or PC, or select a compact model and an accelerator-supported format instead.
USB control works but sensors are unavailable
Check that the operating system granted the application access to the camera and microphones, that no other program has claimed them and that the robot software sees the intended device. A successful motor connection does not prove that every sensor stream is configured.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Reachy Mini Lite run AI with the internet router turned off?
Yes, if the model files and inference runtime are installed on the connected computer and the application has no online-only dependency. You must still power the robot and maintain its USB connection to the host computer.
Does the Raspberry Pi CM4 in the Wireless model run every AI model locally?
No. The CM4 provides onboard computing, but model compatibility depends on memory, supported operators, runtime and workload size. Larger models may still need an external computer or a cloud endpoint.
Can I keep camera and microphone data off the internet?
You can design a local-only setup by using an on-device model, disabling network access during testing and checking that no component calls a remote API. Privacy also depends on the application’s logging and telemetry behavior, not just where inference occurs.
What is the practical advantage of adding Hailo or Coral hardware?
These accelerators can speed compatible neural-network workloads on Raspberry Pi-class computers while reducing CPU load. They do not accelerate arbitrary models automatically; the model format and software stack must support the specific accelerator.
