That is a projection based on accelerated-aging experiments—not a 10,000-year real-time test. Project Silica is research for cloud archiving, not a consumer drive currently established as available to buy.
How Microsoft Project Silica stores data in glass
Project Silica encodes information as microscopic three-dimensional structures inside glass using lasers. Specialized optical equipment and software later read those structures and decode them back into data. The 2023 system paper describes this as part of a cloud archival-storage pipeline, rather than a standalone device for everyday PC storage.
Microsoft’s later research reports changes intended to simplify parts of the writing and reading process, and a move to borosilicate glass. These are research advances; the sources do not establish a retail product or a consumer-ready system.
How much data can a glass platter hold?
The reported capacity depends on the configuration, so the two figures Microsoft and its researchers cite should not be treated as one settled capacity for every platter.

What the 10,000-year estimate means
The 2025 Nature paper’s estimate that data could remain stable for more than 10,000 years at room temperature is based on accelerated-aging experiments. The researchers use those experiments to project long-term stability; the glass has not been observed storing data for 10,000 years in real time. The estimate concerns the data’s stability in the tested medium, not a guarantee that a complete archive—including readers, software, and file formats—will remain usable for that span.

Can you buy Microsoft’s glass storage system?
The sources describe Project Silica as a Microsoft research effort for cloud archives. They do not establish that consumers can buy a glass platter, writer, or reader, or give a consumer price. It should not be treated as a drive you can plug into a PC.
For organizations considering archival storage, the practical question is broader than how much data fits in a platter or how long the medium may last. A usable archive also depends on writing and retrieval performance, how often data must be accessed, the equipment and expertise needed to read it, and whether decoding software and data formats remain understandable over time.

How Project Silica fits into archival storage
The potential appeal is durable, high-density storage for data that must be preserved for long periods and is not constantly retrieved. But the available sources do not provide a head-to-head benchmark against magnetic tape, hard drives, or optical discs, nor do they establish comparative lifetime costs or energy use. A longer-lived medium could reduce some replacement cycles, but migration planning and preserving access to the decoding system remain important archive concerns.
Microsoft Research Partner Research Manager Richard Black described the goal this way: “This technology allows us to write data knowing it will remain unchanged and secure, which is a significant step forward in sustainable data storage.” This is Microsoft’s characterization of the technology, not an independent comparative assessment.
