Microsoft’s 2024 Copilot ad reportedly asked, “Can I be in three meetings at once?” But the sources describing the feature point to meeting recap and catch-up—not an AI stand-in that joins three live meetings, speaks for you, or makes decisions on your behalf. The distinction matters: summarizing a meeting you missed can save time, but it is not the same as delegating your presence.

What Microsoft’s three-meeting ad said—and what it established

Fortune reported on June 23, 2024, that an unnamed user in the ad asks, “Can I be in three meetings at once?” Fortune’s report attributes the phrase to the advertisement.

The line can sound like Copilot will represent someone in several simultaneous meetings. However, contemporaneous coverage did not verify that interpretation. Futurism said the ad’s intended meaning was unclear, and its account described the relevant Teams capability as summarizing meetings for people who could not attend—not sending an autonomous avatar to participate in multiple live calls. Futurism’s coverage makes that uncertainty explicit.

Meeting recap is not the same as attending for you

Capability What it means What the cited accounts establish
Recap and catch-up A user who missed a meeting reviews a summary or recap to catch up on its contents. Futurism describes this as the relevant Teams capability. Microsoft’s own case account says recap helped an employee skip three meetings in one day and spend the time on other work. Microsoft Inside Track’s case account is a company example, not an independent evaluation.
Autonomous representation An AI joins a live meeting, speaks or responds as your stand-in, and potentially acts on your behalf. The cited accounts do not establish that the ad demonstrated this capability.

A recap may help an individual catch up or decide a meeting was safe to skip. It does not show that Copilot attended the call in the person’s place, carried their perspective into the discussion, or made commitments for them.

What the “nearly 4x faster” claim does—and does not—tell you

Fortune reported that a Microsoft spokesperson said, “Copilot can help users summarize a missed meeting nearly 4x faster than non-Copilot users.” The spokesperson attributed the comparison to Microsoft internal research. Fortune’s report does not provide the underlying study, sample, or method, so the figure should be read as Microsoft’s reported internal claim, not as an independently verified result or a guarantee for every user and meeting.

Can recaps solve meeting overload?

Recap can give an individual more flexibility about which meetings to attend, but the organization-wide effect is a separate question. Georgetown University management professor Jeanine Turner, quoted by Futurism, said: “You can see how that doesn’t really solve the overall systemic problem with too many meetings.” If recaps make it easier to skip selected calls, they may help with personal scheduling; they do not by themselves reduce the number of meetings an organization creates or ensure that decisions are made by the right people.

AI expert Simon Willison offered a related caution about delegation. Futurism quoted him describing large language models as “useful tools for thought,” while calling AI avatars “pure AI science fiction thinking.” He also said, “They are terrible tools for delegating decision-making to.” Those are Willison’s views, not a consensus finding, but they underline why a meeting summary and an AI decision-making representative should not be treated as interchangeable.

What to take away from the ad

  • The three-meeting line was reported as a question in a Microsoft Copilot advertisement in June 2024.
  • The cited reporting describes meeting recap as a way to catch up after missing a meeting; it does not establish that Copilot could attend and act in three live meetings for a user.
  • The speed comparison was attributed to Microsoft internal research by a spokesperson, and the underlying methodology is not provided in Fortune’s account.
  • Recapping meetings may help an individual manage attendance, but it is not a demonstrated fix for organizational meeting overload or a substitute for human decision-making.
