Yes, Keeper can reduce the risk of account compromise by generating and storing unique credentials in an encrypted vault, adding stronger sign-in checks, and warning about credentials found in breach data. Keeper says its zero-knowledge design encrypts and decrypts vault data on your device, but that is the company’s description of its architecture—not a guarantee that your accounts cannot be hacked. Phishing, malware, a lost or unlocked device, weak recovery choices, and passwords reused outside the vault remain separate risks.

The useful question is therefore not whether Keeper makes every account invulnerable. It is whether its encryption, authentication choices, passkey support, and breach alerts fit the way you sign in and the devices you use. The details below show what each feature does, where it applies, and what the free plan leaves out.

What does Keeper Password Manager actually protect?

Keeper protects the secrets you place in its vault: passwords, usernames, passkeys, and other records. Its purpose is to let you use long, unique credentials without memorizing them or copying them into notes, spreadsheets, or browser files that may be exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeper says vault records and folders are encrypted before they leave the device and decrypted locally when you need them. In its security overview, the company describes this as a zero-knowledge architecture and says, “Encryption and decryption of data always occur locally on the user’s device.” That statement explains Keeper’s intended design; it is not independent proof that an implementation is free of vulnerabilities.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

A password manager also protects against a common chain reaction. If every website has a different password, a breach at one service does not automatically reveal the password you use at your bank or email provider. Keeper cannot undo a password that was already exposed elsewhere, however, and it cannot protect an account whose credentials you continue to reuse outside the vault.

How does Keeper say it encrypts your passwords?

Keeper’s account of its design has three practical ideas: encryption happens locally, keys are generated on the client, and different sign-in methods use different key-handling flows.

Local encryption and decryption

Keeper says vault data is encrypted and decrypted on the user’s device with AES-256. The service’s description means the readable contents of a record are not intended to be handled as plain text by Keeper’s servers during normal vault use. Your device performs the work needed to display a password or fill it into a site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local processing does not make the endpoint irrelevant. A phone or computer infected with malware can potentially capture a password after the vault has decrypted it, and someone who can use an unlocked device may be able to access the vault. Keep the operating system updated, use a device lock, and avoid approving sign-in prompts you did not initiate.

Record and folder keys

Keeper says record and folder keys are generated on the client. In practical terms, individual vault items and groups can have their own cryptographic protection rather than relying on one readable database shared with the service. The exact implementation details and operational security still belong to Keeper to maintain; the description is not an independent audit of the running product.

Master-password, SSO, and passwordless flows

Keeper distinguishes the key-handling flow used with a master password from flows used with single sign-on (SSO) or passwordless sign-in. Those methods can change how an encryption key is unlocked or obtained, so an organization or household should document which recovery method is enabled before depending on it. Do not assume that changing the sign-in screen leaves every recovery option equivalent.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Which Keeper authentication options matter?

Keeper lists several ways to protect access to the Keeper account itself. They solve different problems and may not all appear on every device or account.

Option What it does Important condition
Multi-factor authentication (MFA) Adds another authentication step after the primary sign-in. Requires a configured second factor and access to it when signing in.
FIDO2/WebAuthn hardware security key Uses a physical security key as an authentication factor. Device, browser, and account support must be compatible; model availability varies.
Passkey Uses a cryptographic credential instead of a password where a service offers passkey sign-in. The external website or app must implement passkeys, and the operating system must support the feature.
Biometric login Uses a supported fingerprint, face, or similar device biometric to unlock or approve access. Availability depends on the device’s biometric hardware and local settings.
SSO or passwordless sign-in Provides an alternate account sign-in flow with its own key-handling behavior. Usually depends on the account configuration or an organization’s identity provider.

Why MFA and a passkey are not the same thing

MFA protects entry to the Keeper account by requiring an additional factor. A passkey, by contrast, can replace a password on an external site, but only when that site or app offers passkey creation and sign-in. You can use both: an MFA-protected Keeper account can store passkeys for other services.

When a hardware key is worth adding

A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key is a credible optional physical factor for people who want a device that must be present during authentication. Keeper lists support for this method, but compatibility depends on the exact key, operating system, browser, and account settings. Check those requirements before buying a particular model; Keeper’s support listing alone does not establish that every key works in every setup.

How do Keeper passkeys work, and where can you use them?

Keeper’s Help Center describes a passkey as a cryptographic credential that can be saved in a vault record when a supporting website offers passkey creation. During a later sign-in, the same site must present a passkey option. Saving a passkey in Keeper does not add passkey capability to a site that still accepts only passwords.

Compatibility listed by Keeper

Keeper’s support documentation lists mobile passkey support for Android 14 and later and iOS 17 and later. It also documents the operating-system autofill settings needed for the phone to offer Keeper when a site requests a passkey. These version requirements and menu labels can change, so check the current support page if your device is on an earlier release or if the passkey picker does not appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Typical passkey setup

  1. Update the phone or tablet to a Keeper-supported operating-system version and install the current Keeper app.
  2. Enable Keeper as an autofill or credential provider in the device’s password and autofill settings.
  3. On a website or app that advertises passkey creation, choose its passkey option and select Keeper when the system asks where to save the credential.
  4. Approve the creation with the device unlock method or Keeper’s requested authentication, then confirm that the new passkey appears in the relevant vault record.
  5. At the next sign-in, choose the site’s passkey button rather than typing a password. If the button is missing, that service may not support passkeys for your account, browser, or device.

Passkeys can reduce exposure to password phishing because the credential is tied cryptographically to the legitimate service. They do not protect a fake site that tricks you into approving a different login, and losing access to the device or vault still requires a recovery plan.

What does BreachWatch add?

BreachWatch is Keeper’s add-on monitoring service. Keeper says it checks breached-credential data against records in your vault and alerts you when a matching account needs attention. Monitoring is detection after data appears in a breach source; it is not a promise that every exposure will be found or prevented.

Keeper’s Help Center says its BreachWatch database contains “over a billion records.” That is Keeper’s own figure, reported on a page last updated August 11, 2026, rather than an independently audited count. The security overview describes hashing and a hardware security module (HSM) approach intended to avoid correlating a breached password with a password stored in your vault. Those are vendor-described safeguards, not evidence that the service can identify every breach.

What the scan and report provide

Keeper says a one-time free scan can be run with an email address. A full report requires the BreachWatch add-on. If an alert appears, treat it as a prompt to sign in to the affected service directly, change the password to a new unique value, revoke unfamiliar sessions, and review that account’s MFA. BreachWatch does not change the external account for you.

What does Keeper’s free plan include and omit?

Keeper’s support article says that, after the trial, the free version is restricted to one mobile device and ten records. It also lists no synchronization, browser-extension access, sharing, or web-vault access in that version. Those limits make the free tier suitable for a small, single-phone vault rather than a multi-device password system.

Plan state Device and record allowance Access and features described by Keeper
30-day trial Unlimited device access during the trial Trial access to the service; confirm current terms before starting.
Free version after trial One mobile device and ten records No sync, browser-extension access, sharing, or web-vault access, according to Keeper’s support article.

Keeper’s product page advertises a 30-day trial, while support documentation describes the restrictions that follow it. Plan names, limits, and add-on terms are changeable; verify the current pricing and feature pages for your country before relying on a particular allowance. No current add-on price is established here.

Can Keeper safeguard every online account?

No. Keeper can strengthen the way you store and present credentials, but its vault encryption does not cover every path by which an attacker can take over an account.

Phishing and fake sign-in pages

A phishing page can persuade you to type a password, approve a prompt, or reveal a recovery code. Autofill behavior and passkeys may help distinguish a legitimate origin, but you still need to check the address and context before approving a sign-in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compromised or shared devices

Malware, malicious browser extensions, screen capture, or another person using an unlocked device can expose data after it is available for use. Use a strong device passcode, biometric lock where appropriate, timely updates, and separate user profiles on shared computers.

Weak recovery and reused credentials

An attacker may target the email account, phone number, backup codes, or recovery contact that controls an account. Secure those channels with their own unique credentials and MFA. A password manager cannot protect a password that was copied into an unprotected document or reused on a breached service.

Service and implementation risk

Keeper’s zero-knowledge and encryption statements describe its intended architecture. They do not establish that the service is invulnerable, that every release is correctly implemented, or that an outage or account-recovery event cannot occur. Keep an offline record of the recovery information Keeper actually provides for your account, stored somewhere protected and accessible when your primary device is unavailable.

How should you configure Keeper for meaningful protection?

Use the following order so that the vault, the Keeper account, and the accounts inside it are addressed separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start with a unique master credential. Create a long master password that is not used on any other service, or choose the supported organizational sign-in flow that your account requires.
  2. Turn on an additional factor. Enable MFA, a compatible FIDO2/WebAuthn key, biometric unlock, or another option Keeper presents for your device. Store backup or recovery information in a protected location.
  3. Import selectively and replace reused passwords. Add important accounts first, then generate a different password for each service. Change the password on the service itself; storing an old password in Keeper does not make it safe.
  4. Enable autofill deliberately. Select Keeper in the operating system and browser settings you actually use. Test autofill on a low-risk account before moving to banking or administrative services.
  5. Add passkeys where the service supports them. Create the passkey from the legitimate site or app, verify that Keeper saved it, and retain another approved recovery method if the service requires one.
  6. Review breach alerts promptly. If you use BreachWatch and receive a match, change the affected service’s password, inspect active sessions, and check for unauthorized profile or recovery changes.
  7. Protect the endpoints. Keep phones, computers, browsers, and security-key firmware maintained, and do not unlock the vault on a device you do not control.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Who is the free tier suitable for?

The free version may work for someone who needs a small vault on one phone and can live without synchronization, browser extensions, sharing, or a web vault. It is a poor fit for a household, a person who switches between phone and computer, or anyone managing more than ten records.

The trial is more useful for testing multi-device access and your preferred sign-in method before deciding whether the post-trial limits meet your routine. Because the trial and plan terms can change, make the decision from the current Keeper pages rather than an old price list.

What should you verify before relying on Keeper?

  • Your phone, browser, and operating-system versions support the autofill, biometric, passkey, or hardware-key method you selected.
  • You have a documented recovery route for the Keeper account and for the email account used to recover other services.
  • Every important account has a unique password or a supported passkey, with MFA enabled where available.
  • You understand whether BreachWatch is included in your plan or requires its add-on, and what a one-time scan does not cover.
  • Your chosen plan provides the synchronization, extension, sharing, and web access you need after the 30-day trial.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Keeper change a password automatically after BreachWatch finds it?

Keeper describes BreachWatch as a monitoring and alerting service. You must visit the affected website or app, set a new credential, and review its sessions and recovery settings yourself.

Can a Keeper passkey sign me in to a website that has no passkey button?

No. The website or app must implement passkey creation and sign-in and expose that option to your device. A passkey saved in the vault cannot add support to a service that does not offer it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I lose the phone that has my Keeper vault?

The practical response depends on the recovery and additional-authentication methods configured on your account. Keep your recovery information and a second approved sign-in method available before a device is lost; do not assume a replacement phone will automatically unlock the vault.

Is the BreachWatch database figure independently verified?

No independent audit is established here. The statement that the database contains over a billion records comes from Keeper’s Help Center and should be read as the vendor’s reported figure.
