Yes—many iPhone personal automations in Apple’s Shortcuts app can run without a confirmation prompt. Open Shortcuts, tap Automation, choose the automation, turn off Ask Before Running, select Don’t Ask, and tap Done. That setting applies only to eligible automation triggers, and some actions inside the automation have their own interaction or permission requirements.

“Duo automations” is not a label used in Apple’s Shortcuts documentation. This guide treats the question as referring to iPhone personal automations. The exact labels and trigger list can change between iOS releases, so use the wording shown on your iPhone.

What does “Duo automation” mean on an iPhone?

Apple does not define “Duo automation” as a Shortcuts feature or automation type. In the context of this question, the closest supported feature is a personal automation: a rule in Shortcuts that starts when a trigger such as a time, location, connection, message, or device state occurs.

Personal automations are separate from ordinary shortcuts you launch manually. They are configured in the Automation tab and can either ask for approval or, when Apple allows it, start automatically. The automation must remain enabled for either behavior to occur.

How do I stop Shortcuts from asking before running?

Change the confirmation option in the automation’s own settings. The setting is not a global switch for every automation on the phone.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app.
  2. Tap Automation to see your personal automations.
  3. Tap the automation that is showing the confirmation alert.
  4. Turn off Ask Before Running.
  5. When Shortcuts asks you to confirm the change, tap Don’t Ask.
  6. Tap Done to save the automation.

Trigger the automation again to test it. If it still presents a prompt, the remaining interaction may come from an individual action rather than from the automation’s confirmation setting. Apple specifically notes that individual actions may also need to be configured to run automatically.

What happens if the automation is disabled?

A disabled automation does not notify you and does not run automatically. Reopen it from Shortcuts > Automation and make sure its enable switch is on before troubleshooting prompts.

Which iPhone automations can run automatically?

Apple lists the following personal-automation trigger categories as capable of running without asking, subject to the action-level and device limitations described below:

Trigger category Examples of what starts it Automatic-run status
Time of Day A scheduled time Listed by Apple as eligible
Alarm An alarm event Listed by Apple as eligible
Sleep A sleep-related schedule or state Listed by Apple as eligible
Arrive Reaching a selected location Listed by Apple as eligible
Leave Leaving a selected location Listed by Apple as eligible
CarPlay A CarPlay connection event Listed by Apple as eligible
Email An email-related trigger you configure Listed by Apple as eligible
Message A message-related trigger you configure Listed by Apple as eligible
Transaction A supported transaction event Listed by Apple as eligible
Wi-Fi Joining a selected Wi-Fi network Listed by Apple as eligible
Bluetooth Connecting to a selected Bluetooth device Listed by Apple as eligible
Apple Watch Workout A workout event involving Apple Watch Listed by Apple as eligible
NFC Scanning a near-field communication tag Listed by Apple as eligible
App Opening or closing a selected app, according to the available trigger choices Listed by Apple as eligible

Low Power Mode Low Power Mode changing state Listed by Apple as eligible
Battery Level Reaching the battery threshold you set Listed by Apple as eligible
Charger Connecting or disconnecting a charger Listed by Apple as eligible
Sound Recognition A recognized sound event Listed by Apple as eligible

Apple identifies Before I Commute as an automation that cannot run automatically. If your chosen trigger is not on the eligible list, switching off Ask Before Running will not turn it into a fully unattended automation.

Why does an automation still ask me after I turn off the confirmation?

The confirmation toggle controls the automation’s start approval; it does not guarantee that every action in the sequence can complete without interaction. Check the following causes in order.

An individual action needs interaction

Some actions have their own settings, permissions, or confirmation behavior. Review every action in the automation and look for an option that requires approval, an on-screen choice, or access to protected information. Apple’s guidance says those individual actions may need to be set to run automatically as well. If an action cannot operate unattended, the automation may stop, pause, or present a prompt even though the main toggle is off.

The phone is locked

Apple’s Shortcuts guide includes a separate privacy setting called Allow Running When Locked. This is distinct from Ask Before Running: the first concerns execution while the device is locked, while the second concerns whether the automation asks for approval when it is triggered. Do not assume that enabling one setting overrides the other, or that every shortcut and action is permitted while locked.

The trigger is not eligible

Review the trigger category against Apple’s automatic-run list. The “Before I Commute” trigger is specifically excluded, and the available trigger choices can change with iOS updates. An ineligible trigger may continue to require your involvement regardless of the confirmation switch.

The automation is turned off

An automation that is disabled neither runs nor sends its normal automation notification. Check the automation’s enabled state before changing actions or privacy settings.

The event did not occur exactly as configured

Automation triggers are conditional. A time trigger must reach the configured time; a location trigger depends on the selected arrival or departure condition; a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth trigger depends on the chosen network or device; and a battery or charger trigger depends on the threshold or connection state you selected. Reopen the automation to verify the condition rather than testing a similar event and assuming it is equivalent.

What is the difference between “Ask Before Running” and “Allow Running When Locked”?

They solve different problems and should be checked separately:

  • Ask Before Running: controls whether Shortcuts requests your confirmation when an eligible personal automation is triggered. Turning it off and choosing Don’t Ask removes that automation-level approval step.
  • Allow Running When Locked: is a privacy-related consideration for allowing a shortcut to run without user interaction while the iPhone is locked. It does not make an ineligible trigger automatic and does not remove action-level restrictions.

If an automation runs while the iPhone is unlocked but not while it is locked, investigate the locked-device setting and the actions in the sequence instead of repeatedly changing Ask Before Running.

How do NFC-triggered automations work?

NFC is an optional way to start an eligible personal automation by scanning a near-field communication tag. You do not need an NFC tag to use time, location, battery, charger, or the other trigger categories.

  1. Create or open a personal automation in Shortcuts > Automation.
  2. Choose NFC as the trigger and follow the on-screen scan step.
  3. Scan the tag you intend to use, then add the actions for the routine.
  4. Review Ask Before Running and choose Don’t Ask if the automation and its actions support unattended execution.
  5. Save the automation and test it by scanning the same tag again.

Apple says Shortcuts uses the tag’s unique identifier and ignores the rest of the tag’s stored contents. In practical terms, writing a URL, text string, or other payload to the tag does not make that content the automation’s command; the scan identifies the tag. NFC support is also not present on every device, so check that the iPhone you plan to use can scan NFC tags before designing a routine around one.

Do personal automations sync to all my Apple devices?

No. Apple states that a personal automation is backed up to iCloud but does not sync to other devices. A replacement iPhone or a second device may therefore require you to review or recreate the automation, even when you use the same Apple Account.

This device-specific behavior matters for household routines and shared procedures. Configure and test the automation on the iPhone that will actually receive the trigger; do not assume that an automation created elsewhere has identical settings on this device.

How can I troubleshoot an automation that will not run unattended?

Use this sequence to isolate the failure without rebuilding the routine prematurely:

  1. Confirm the trigger: identify the exact category and condition, then check whether Apple lists it as capable of automatic execution.
  2. Confirm it is enabled: a disabled automation will not run or notify.
  3. Confirm the confirmation setting: open the automation, switch off Ask Before Running, select Don’t Ask, and tap Done.
  4. Inspect each action: look for an action that requests a choice, permission, authentication, or other interaction. Configure it for automatic operation when that option exists.
  5. Check locked-device behavior: if the failure happens only while locked, review Allow Running When Locked and the privacy implications of the actions involved.
  6. Test the exact event: reproduce the configured time, connection, location, battery, or scan condition rather than using a near match.
  7. For NFC, test the same tag: the identifier is what matters, and a different tag is a different trigger.
  8. Retest after saving: tap Done after edits so the revised automation is stored before you trigger it again.

If the automation still asks for input after these checks, the remaining prompt is most likely tied to an action or to the security context in which the shortcut is being run, not to the basic personal-automation confirmation switch.

Are automatic iPhone automations safe to use?

Automatic execution is convenient, but it removes the pause in which you would normally review what is about to happen. Be especially deliberate with automations that change communication settings, process transactions, expose personal information, or act on location and messages. Test with a harmless action first, then add sensitive actions only after you understand the trigger and locked-device behavior.

Keep the trigger narrow enough to avoid accidental runs. A specific time, selected network, single Bluetooth device, or known NFC tag is easier to reason about than a condition that occurs frequently. Revisit the automation after an iOS update because Apple can change available labels, trigger choices, or privacy behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an iPhone automation run when the phone has no internet connection?

The automatic-run setting itself is separate from an internet connection, but actions inside the automation may depend on network access or a particular service. Test the exact routine offline before relying on it, and distinguish a failed action from a trigger that never fired.

Will I still receive a notification when an automation runs automatically?

Whether you see a notification depends on the automation and the iOS behavior for that trigger and action. Turning off Ask Before Running removes the approval prompt; it does not promise that every status notification or action message disappears.

Can I make one personal automation run on both my iPhone and iPad?

Apple says personal automations are backed up to iCloud but do not sync to other devices. Set up and test a separate automation on each device that needs to respond to the trigger.

Does an NFC tag need to contain a special command for Shortcuts?

No. Apple says Shortcuts uses the tag’s unique identifier and ignores the tag’s other contents. The tag functions as an identifier for the scan trigger, while the actions are defined in the personal automation.

Why is “Before I Commute” different from other triggers?

Apple identifies Before I Commute as unable to run automatically. If that is the trigger you selected, the confirmation setting cannot convert it into an unattended automation; choose an eligible trigger if your routine can be redesigned around one.
