Yes. You can use the same Microsoft account on two devices to access Microsoft services and your account. The important distinction is that signing in to an account is not the same as activating desktop Word, Excel, or other Office apps: Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Store downloads have separate device limits.
What using one Microsoft account on two devices means
You can sign in to both devices with the same Microsoft account for services tied to that account. You do not need a Microsoft 365 subscription simply to use an account on two devices. Microsoft account device management can show registered devices, though Microsoft notes that not every device type can be registered manually: Manage devices used with your Microsoft account.
What you can do on each device depends on the service and license. For example, access to account services or cloud files is distinct from the right to use the desktop Office apps.
Does Microsoft 365 let you use Office on both devices?
Yes. Microsoft says a Microsoft 365 subscriber can install the apps on all their devices and sign in to Office on up to five devices at the same time. That is a limit on simultaneous Office sign-ins per person, not a two-device limit on the Microsoft account itself. If Office signs out on a device, sign in again using the Microsoft account associated with the subscription or license. If you use a work or school account, your organization’s assigned license and policies determine access; if the installation option is unavailable in your account portal, contact your administrator. What if someone else will use Office?
Do not treat sharing your personal Microsoft account as the way to share an Office subscription. With Microsoft 365 Family, the subscriber can share benefits with up to five additional people, for up to six people total. Each person uses their own Microsoft account and has their own allowance of up to five simultaneous Office sign-ins. Free web apps versus desktop Office
A Microsoft account can access free Microsoft 365 web apps. Desktop app benefits are included with paid plans, subject to the applicable license and sign-in rules. How to resolve a sign-in or device-limit problem
- If Office asks you to activate: Open the Office app and sign in with the account that owns or shares the Microsoft 365 subscription or Office license.
- If Office signed out on another device: Sign in again with that licensed account. The five-device limit applies to simultaneous Office sign-ins, not to account use generally.
- If a Store download is blocked: Review the devices attached to your Microsoft Store account and unlink one you no longer use to free a slot under the separate 10-device download limit.
- If this is a work or school account: Check with your organization’s administrator about your assigned license and installation permissions.
