Yes. Microsoft Teams lets you pick a built-in background, blur your surroundings, or upload your own image. You can do this before you join a meeting or while you’re in one. Microsoft lists JPG, PNG and BMP as the supported formats for custom images.
Your three background choices
- Built-in image: pick one of the backgrounds Teams provides.
- Blur: keep your real room but soften it.
- Your own image: select Add new and upload a JPG, PNG or BMP file.
Select None at any time to turn the effect off.
How to change your background before joining
- In the Teams calendar, select the meeting, then select Join.
- On the pre-join screen, open Effects and avatars.
- Choose a background or a blur option.
- To use a personal picture, go to More video effects > Add new and select your JPG, PNG or BMP file.
- Join the meeting.
How to change it during a meeting
- Open More actions > Video effects and settings.
- Select a background or blur option from the list.
- To upload your own image, choose Add new on the same page.
Your choice stays in place for later meetings and calls until you change it.
On a phone or tablet
Microsoft documents background effects in Teams for personal use on mobile. Before joining, open the background control on the pre-join screen. During a call, use More actions > Change background. The exact controls can vary by device and account type.
If you don’t see the option
Microsoft says the feature may not be available on your device. Its accessibility guidance also lists two environments where background effects are unavailable: Linux, and Teams used through optimized virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). If you work on a virtual desktop, ask your IT team whether it uses optimized VDI.

Privacy and accessibility cautions
- Blur is not a privacy guarantee. Microsoft warns: “Blurring or replacing your background may not prevent sensitive information from being visible to other people in the call or meeting.” Keep sensitive material out of the camera’s view.
- Sign language interpreters: if a meeting has an interpreter, Microsoft advises against blurring the interpreter’s background, because it can obscure signing.
Company-branded backgrounds are a separate feature
Teams Premium supports organization-defined backgrounds that show a company logo or brand image in a meeting or event. Microsoft says only participants with Teams Premium licenses get these. Guests and anonymous participants won’t see them in their settings. This is different from uploading your own image, which doesn’t need Teams Premium.
