Yes. Attackers can use AI systems, ordinary scripts, or human-crafted inputs to compromise another AI application without ever stealing its model weights. They can manipulate prompts, hide instructions in webpages and documents, poison training or retrieval data, tamper with model files and dependencies, extract sensitive information through repeated queries, or abuse tools connected to an agent.

The practical risk depends on access and agency. A text-only chatbot may return confidential or misleading content; an agent that can read files, call APIs, change records, or spend money can turn the same weakness into an operational incident. NIST’s March 2025 taxonomy groups consequences into availability, integrity, misuse and privacy, while the UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and OWASP describe attack paths across the full AI lifecycle.

What does it mean to “hack” an AI model?

“Hacking” an AI system is broader than stealing or modifying its neural-network weights. A compromise can occur at the application layer, in the data pipeline, in a model repository, or through tools surrounding the model. The model may remain unchanged while an attacker causes the system to disclose information, make an unsafe decision, execute an unauthorized action or become unavailable.

  • Misuse and safety: steering a system into harmful, prohibited or policy-violating behavior.
  • Privacy: exposing prompts, user interactions, training examples or information about a person.

These impacts can overlap. For example, poisoned retrieval data can produce false decisions (integrity), while a malicious tool call can also disclose records (privacy) or delete them (availability).

How can hackers attack an AI system?

Attackers choose a point in the AI lifecycle and the access level available to them. The map below shows the main families documented by NIST, NCSC and OWASP.

Attack family Where it enters Typical result What makes it difficult
Prompt injection and jailbreaks User messages, webpages, files, retrieval results or tool responses Disclosed information, altered instructions, unauthorized functions or biased decisions The malicious text can look like ordinary content and may be indirect
Evasion and adversarial examples Inputs at deployment A classifier or generator produces the wrong result from a subtly changed input Small changes can preserve human meaning while changing model behavior
Data, model and memory poisoning Pretraining, fine-tuning, feedback, retrieval corpora, embeddings or agent memory Persistent bias, false facts, backdoors or hidden commands The system may behave normally until a trigger or particular record appears
Extraction and privacy attacks Public or authenticated query interfaces A copied model, reconstructed training data, membership inference or prompt leakage Each individual query can look harmless
Supply-chain and artifact attacks Third-party models, libraries, weights, artifact stores and deployment infrastructure Malicious code, altered behavior, stolen secrets or a compromised runtime Trust is transferred to components the operator did not build
Agent and tool abuse Connected APIs, plugins, credentials, memory and workflow actions Data exfiltration, privilege escalation, unauthorized transactions or destructive changes The model can turn a text instruction into a real-world action

What is prompt injection, and how does it attack an AI?

Prompt injection is an instruction-conflict attack in which content causes a language model to behave in an unintended way. OWASP defines it as: “A Prompt Injection Vulnerability occurs when user prompts alter the LLM’s behavior or output in unintended ways.” Its OWASP Prompt Injection guidance distinguishes two routes.

Direct injection

The attacker places the instruction directly in a chat message or API request. A jailbreak is a form of direct manipulation that attempts to override safety rules, reveal hidden instructions or induce prohibited output. If the application passes the text to a privileged workflow, the attacker may also try to make the model call a function outside the user’s authority.

Indirect injection

The attacker hides instructions in material the model is expected to read: a webpage, email, PDF, database row, retrieval result or tool response. The user may never see the malicious text. The NCSC notes that prompt manipulation can originate in system inputs, tool responses, other agents and reference-content databases.

Possible consequences include system-prompt exposure, disclosure of secrets in context, manipulated summaries, unauthorized function access, arbitrary commands in connected systems and distorted decisions. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and fine-tuning can improve usefulness but do not remove this vulnerability; OWASP says foolproof prevention is not currently established.

Can someone poison an AI model, its data or an agent’s memory?

Yes. Poisoning changes information that the system relies on rather than attacking only the inference request. The target can be a pretraining or fine-tuning dataset, a feedback pipeline, a retrieval corpus, an embedding index or persistent agent memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Training and fine-tuning poisoning

An attacker who can contribute or alter examples can insert falsified records, biased material or a trigger pattern. The resulting model may produce systematically wrong answers or activate a concealed behavior when the trigger appears. NIST separates data poisoning, targeted poisoning, backdoor poisoning and model poisoning because they can pursue different integrity, misuse, availability or privacy goals.

Retrieval and embedding poisoning

In a RAG system, a malicious document or database entry can rank highly for a relevant query. The model then treats the attacker’s text as evidence or instructions. This can affect a single tenant, a department’s knowledge base or every user who retrieves the poisoned item, depending on indexing and access controls.

Memory poisoning

An agent that stores preferences, summaries or past interactions can be taught a false rule that persists into later tasks. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet treats memory poisoning as an agent-specific risk because a later, trusted-looking memory can influence tool calls.

Poisoning is especially dangerous when provenance is weak. The OWASP data and model poisoning guidance gives examples such as falsified documents, backdoor triggers that bypass authentication, data exfiltration and hidden command execution.

What are evasion attacks and adversarial examples?

An evasion attack changes an input at deployment time so that a classifier or generative system misclassifies it or produces an unintended result. The change can be subtle enough to preserve the meaning a person sees while crossing a model’s decision boundary. The NCSC places evasion attacks in the deployment stage, and OWASP includes adversarial examples in its Secure AI Model Operations guidance.

Evasion differs from poisoning: poisoning changes what the model learned or retrieves, while evasion leaves the model intact and crafts an input that defeats it at run time. Testing should therefore include transformed, adversarial and out-of-distribution inputs rather than only clean test examples.

Can hackers steal a model or its training data through queries?

They can sometimes infer more than the operator intended by making many carefully chosen requests. NCSC describes model extraction as repeated querying used to build a copy or approximation of a model. Rate limits and authentication raise the cost but do not by themselves prove that extraction is impossible.

Model inversion attempts to identify or reconstruct information associated with training examples. Related privacy attacks include membership inference (asking whether a person’s record was used for training), training-data extraction, prompt extraction and leakage from user interaction data. NIST lists these attacks in its taxonomy, while the NCSC covers extraction and inversion in its secure-deployment principles.

Risk rises when prompts contain confidential material, when outputs echo long verbatim passages, or when an API exposes detailed confidence, token or error information. Operators should classify data before it reaches a model and treat query logs as sensitive because they can contain the same secrets users attempted to process.

How do supply-chain and model-artifact attacks work?

An AI deployment inherits risk from every model, library, container, plugin, dataset and storage service it trusts. OWASP warns about unvalidated third-party models, open artifact stores, hardcoded secrets, unsecured APIs, orphaned deployments and weak runtime isolation. A malicious or altered component can change behavior before the first user request, execute code during loading, or expose credentials after deployment.

The UK Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI calls for documented provenance, audit trails and cryptographic hashes for distributed model components. In practice, an operator should record where each weight, dataset and dependency came from, verify its hash before promotion, restrict who can publish artifacts and retain the ability to roll back to a known-good version.

Are AI agents more dangerous than ordinary chatbots?

Usually, yes in terms of potential impact—not because the underlying model is automatically more accurate, but because an agent can reason across steps, call tools, access memory and act on external systems. A chatbot that returns a malicious sentence is a content problem; an agent that sends email, changes a ticket, queries a database or initiates a transaction can turn that sentence into an incident.

OWASP identifies prompt injection, tool abuse and privilege escalation, data exfiltration and memory poisoning as major agent risks. The safest design keeps privileged operations in deterministic code, gives the model only the minimum permissions required, uses isolated credentials and requires a human approval step for high-risk actions. Tool responses and retrieved content must remain untrusted even when they come from an internal system.

How should you compare the severity of two AI attack scenarios?

Use the same questions for each system rather than treating “AI” as a single risk category.

Question Examples of answers Why it changes the risk
What access does the attacker have? Public query access, authenticated user, data contributor, model maintainer or infrastructure access More access creates more ways to alter inputs, data or deployment
Which lifecycle stage is targeted? Data collection, training, fine-tuning, deployment, retrieval or agent execution Earlier compromise can persist across many later users
What is the primary impact? Availability, integrity, misuse or safety, confidentiality/privacy, or downstream operational harm It determines containment, notification and recovery priorities
How much agency does the system have? Text-only response, retrieval, code execution, external tools, transactions or persistent memory More agency increases the consequences of a bad output
How detectable and reversible is it? Obvious bad output versus stealthy poisoning or extraction; temporary behavior versus a persistent backdoor Stealth and persistence increase the time an attacker can operate

How can developers defend an AI application?

No single prompt rule is sufficient. The controls below are designed to reduce both the chance of compromise and the damage when a model behaves unexpectedly.

  1. Threat-model the entire lifecycle. Map data collection, training, artifact storage, deployment, retrieval, tools and memory. Revisit the model whenever a configuration, data source or permission changes, as required by the UK code.
  2. Separate instructions from untrusted content. Mark webpages, files, retrieval results and tool responses as data, not authority. Use strict schemas and validate that outputs match the action the application expects. OWASP recommends treating external content as untrusted.
  3. Apply least privilege. Give each agent only the tools and records required for its task. Use short-lived, scoped credentials; keep administrator functions outside the model’s direct control; and place deterministic checks around every consequential call.
  4. Require approval for high-risk actions. A human should confirm payments, account changes, deletion, publication, credential use and other irreversible operations. The approval screen should show the exact parameters the tool will receive.
  5. Verify provenance and integrity. Maintain an inventory of models, datasets and dependencies; review publishers; protect artifact stores; and verify cryptographic hashes before deployment and after transfer.
  6. Isolate runtime components. Separate model execution, retrieval, tools and secrets with network and permission boundaries. Prevent a compromised prompt or plugin from reaching unrelated systems.
  7. Test adversarially before and after release. Include direct and indirect prompt injection, jailbreak attempts, poisoned documents, malformed inputs, extraction patterns and tool-abuse scenarios. OWASP recommends treating the model as an untrusted user during testing and running breach simulations.
  8. Monitor behavior and access. Log user activity, tool calls, model and data versions, repeated jailbreak attempts, unusual query volume, extraction-like probing, drift and unexpected failures. The NCSC recommends monitoring the deployed system rather than assuming pre-release testing is enough.

What should an operator do after a suspected attack?

First, limit the attacker’s path without destroying evidence: suspend the affected tool or credential, quarantine suspicious documents or memories, and preserve relevant prompts, outputs, tool arguments, model versions and access logs. If a model or artifact may be poisoned, stop promotion of related versions and compare hashes and provenance with the last known-good release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Next, determine the scope by checking which users, data sources, tools and time periods were exposed. Revoke or rotate credentials that appeared in prompts, logs or tool contexts; remove poisoned retrieval records; reset affected memory; and redeploy a verified artifact. For high-impact systems, involve the organization’s incident-response, privacy and safety teams before restoring autonomous actions.

What is still uncertain about AI attacks?

Authoritative guidance describes attack classes and controls, but it does not provide one universal success rate or incident count for “AI hacking.” Results vary with the model, guardrails, data, interface, permissions and attacker access. Defenses reduce likelihood and impact; they do not make prompt injection or other attacks impossible.

The NCSC states that protecting information about a model strengthens the barrier to entry for attackers. The UK code puts the responsibility plainly: “Developers and System Operators shall analyse threats and manage security risks to their systems.” Those principles apply whether the system is a hosted API, an internal RAG service or an autonomous agent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an air-gapped or offline AI model still be attacked?

Yes. An offline model is insulated from remote requests, but poisoned training files, malicious model packages, compromised update media and crafted local inputs can still affect it. Physical access and the people who move data into the environment become the critical trust boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does encrypting model weights stop AI attacks?

Encryption helps protect stored artifacts and data in transit, but it does not prevent a malicious prompt, poisoned retrieval record or over-privileged tool call after the model is running. Access control, provenance checks and runtime isolation are still required.

What is the safest permission model for an AI agent?

Use separate, short-lived credentials for narrowly scoped tools, deny access by default and keep irreversible operations behind deterministic policy checks. Show a person the exact action and parameters before approving high-impact changes.

Can a security filter reliably detect every jailbreak?

No. Attackers can vary wording, hide instructions in external content or exploit a new tool path. Layered controls, adversarial testing, monitoring and the ability to disable tools are more dependable than any single filter.
