Yes. Kubernetes Gateway API can describe both north-south ingress and east-west service-mesh routing, but the resources used differ: ingress commonly attaches HTTPRoute resources to a Gateway, while mesh routing can attach a route directly to a Service under GAMMA. Buoyant’s April 12, 2024 video workshop introduces these patterns alongside resilience, progressive delivery, and ingress traffic management, using either Linkerd or Istio. It is a useful practical orientation, but the tutorial should not be treated as proof that every feature or manifest behaves identically across both implementations.

What does the video cover?

The workshop starts with an unconfigured Kubernetes cluster and a demo application, then builds toward routing and traffic-management scenarios using Gateway API. Its stated scope includes resilience, progressive delivery, and ingress traffic management. That makes it most useful to viewers who want to see how routing concepts fit together in a working service-mesh environment, rather than to readers looking for a complete reference to every Gateway API feature.

The video is dated April 12, 2024. Its description presents Linkerd or Istio as implementation choices; that does not establish that the workshop conducts a feature-by-feature comparison between them. Nor does the available description identify the exact Gateway API version or controller versions used. Those details matter if you plan to copy manifests into a newer or differently configured cluster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical way to watch is to separate the lesson into three layers. First, identify the Kubernetes objects that create a traffic entry point and express a route. Second, observe which requests are selected by host, path, or header conditions. Third, note which behavior comes from the portable API and which behavior comes from the selected mesh or controller. This prevents a useful demonstration from being mistaken for a guarantee of cross-controller equivalence.

What is Gateway API, and why does it matter for a service mesh?

Gateway API is a Kubernetes project for Layer 4 and Layer 7 routing. Its resource model is designed to be expressive and role-oriented, and it can support traffic entering a cluster as well as traffic moving between services inside it. This common API vocabulary can make routing configurations easier to understand across different environments, while leaving implementation behavior to the controller or mesh that processes the resources.

The key distinction is where traffic is going and what owns the routing decision. An ingress Gateway exposes listeners as a traffic entry point. A mesh route can instead describe policy for traffic addressed to a Service. Gateway API provides the resource semantics; a compatible controller or service mesh must implement them for them to have an effect.

The project describes itself as an official Kubernetes effort focused on L4 and L7 routing. In practical terms for this video, that means the API is not limited to one vendor’s ingress proxy. The same family of resources can express an external HTTP decision and, under the GAMMA work, a decision for calls made between workloads. The shared vocabulary is valuable, but it does not remove the need to understand the data path and the implementation processing each object.

What is the difference between Gateway and HTTPRoute?

A Gateway defines an endpoint and its listeners, while an HTTPRoute describes how matching HTTP requests should be handled. A GatewayClass identifies the controller responsible for a Gateway. In the usual ingress arrangement, a route attaches to a Gateway and sends matching requests to backend Services.

  • GatewayClass: identifies the controller that manages Gateway resources.
  • Gateway: defines listeners and the traffic endpoint.
  • HTTPRoute: supplies host, path, or header matches and routing rules, including references to backend Services.

Keeping endpoint configuration separate from request-routing rules allows different roles to manage them. For example, a platform team can provide a shared Gateway while application owners define routes, subject to the namespace and permission rules in effect.

This separation also clarifies troubleshooting. If a request never reaches the listener, inspect the Gateway, its address, and listener status. If the listener is available but the wrong application receives the request, inspect the attached HTTPRoute, its host and match rules, and its backend references. A route that exists in the API is not necessarily a route that has been accepted by its parent.

How does an ingress request travel through Gateway API?

For ingress, DNS resolves the Gateway’s address. A reverse proxy receives the request on a listener, checks the Host header against attached HTTPRoutes, evaluates any path or header matches and filters, then forwards the request to the selected backend Service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the traffic endpoint. The Gateway’s listeners establish where and how traffic can enter.
  2. Attach a route. An HTTPRoute uses parentRefs to identify the Gateway it should attach to.
  3. Choose requests. The route’s hostnames and rules.matches select requests by hostname and conditions such as path or header.
  4. Apply routing behavior. Filters can modify requests, and backendRefs identify the destination Service or Services.

A representative configuration attaches an HTTPRoute to a Gateway, selects www.example.com, matches the /login path, and forwards to example-svc on port 8080. The exact manifest must still match the API version and implementation installed in the cluster.

Reading a route from top to bottom helps expose common mistakes. parentRefs answers “where is this policy attached?” hostnames answers “which virtual host can use it?” Each rule then narrows the request with path or header matches, and the backend reference answers “where should an accepted request go?” A mismatch at any layer can look like a networking failure even when the Service itself is healthy.

Can HTTPRoute handle host, path, header, and canary routing?

Yes. HTTPRoute rules can match hostnames, paths, and headers, and can forward matching traffic to backend Services. The official routing examples illustrate how these conditions distinguish requests and how a more specific match takes precedence.

Request condition Backend Routing idea
foo.example.com/login foo-svc Match a hostname and login path.
bar.example.com/* with header env: canary bar-svc-canary Send requests carrying a canary header to the canary backend.
bar.example.com/* without that header bar-svc Use the regular backend for requests not selected by the canary condition.

This example demonstrates conditional routing, not a percentage-based traffic split. A canary header lets a request qualify for a particular route; it does not, by itself, gradually increase the share of users sent to a canary. Progressive delivery may require additional routing configuration or controller-specific capabilities. Likewise, although the workshop’s stated scope includes resilience and progressive delivery, the available description does not establish which timeout, retry, or traffic-splitting features it demonstrates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specificity matters when several rules could match. A route that includes a hostname and a /login path is narrower than a catch-all path for that hostname. The bar-domain example similarly gives header-bearing requests a distinct destination while leaving other requests on the regular backend. Test both sides of every condition; testing only the canary request can hide an accidentally broad default rule.

How does Gateway API routing work inside a service mesh?

For mesh traffic, GAMMA—the initiative defining Gateway API use for service meshes—uses a different attachment pattern. An HTTPRoute can name a Service in parentRefs rather than attaching to a Gateway. The route then represents policy for traffic directed to that Service; a Gateway and GatewayClass are normally not part of this mesh-routing pattern.

Attachment and merging rules affect what happens when multiple teams define routes. If routes attach to a Service, requests that match none of those routes are rejected under the GAMMA behavior described by the project. If no routes are attached, the mesh follows its default behavior. Multiple routes for one Service in a namespace are merged according to Gateway API rules, so creating separate routes does not necessarily create isolated policies for separate consumers. Separate namespaces may be needed when consumers require different behavior.

Namespace and RBAC boundaries are therefore part of the design, not administrative details to add later. Before applying a mesh route, check which Service it names, whether its namespace is permitted to attach to that parent, and whether another route in the same namespace will be merged into the effective policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the main conceptual contrast with ingress. An ingress route starts at a Gateway listener and selects an external request. A GAMMA route starts with traffic addressed to a Service and changes the policy the mesh applies to that destination. The YAML kind may be the same, but the parent reference, ownership model, and consequences of an unmatched request are different.

Can ingress and east-west routing coexist?

They can be represented in the same cluster because Gateway API covers both use cases, but they are not automatically one combined route table. Ingress commonly uses a Gateway as the parent, while mesh routing uses a Service as the parent. Treat each attachment as an explicit design decision and verify which controller is watching it.

A team can therefore have an HTTPRoute for public traffic to a Service and another HTTPRoute expressing mesh policy for calls directed to that Service. The effective behavior depends on the implementations and on the route-merging and permission rules in force. Do not assume that adding the second object leaves the first behavior untouched; inspect status and exercise requests from both outside and inside the cluster.

Does Linkerd use the same workflow as Istio?

Both can be considered in a Gateway API workshop, but shared API vocabulary does not guarantee identical workflows or feature support. Gateway API aims for portable resource semantics; the controller or mesh still determines which features are implemented and how they behave in a particular installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When following the video with either implementation, verify these points in the documentation and cluster you are using:

  • Which Gateway API version and CRDs are installed, and whether the implementation supports the resource kinds in the example.
  • Whether the route attaches to a Gateway for ingress or directly to a Service for mesh traffic.
  • Which hostname, path, and header matches, filters, and backend references are supported.
  • Whether the desired traffic split, timeout, or other resilience behavior is implemented, and whether it uses portable fields or implementation-specific configuration.
  • Which namespaces may attach routes, and what RBAC permissions allow those changes.
  • How to inspect status conditions and diagnose rejected or unattached routes.

The video’s framing supports learning Gateway API concepts through a mesh implementation. It does not, on its own, establish that Linkerd and Istio install the same CRDs, expose the same feature set, or accept every manifest unchanged.

For a fair comparison, use the same scenario rather than comparing product names in the abstract. Create one listener, one host match, one path match, one header-qualified canary route, and one default backend. Then record whether each implementation accepts the objects, how it reports status, and what happens to unmatched traffic. Repeat the exercise with a Service parent for mesh traffic. This reveals differences in installation, attachment, diagnostics, and feature coverage without implying that one controller’s behavior is a property of Gateway API itself.

Where do resilience and progressive delivery fit?

The workshop advertises resilience and progressive delivery as part of its practical scope, but the page description does not enumerate the exact fields or demonstrations. Viewers should distinguish a concept introduced in the workshop from a portable feature confirmed for their controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Timeouts, retries, request filters, and traffic splitting can have materially different support and safety implications. A timeout may be represented by a portable route field, by a policy object, or by implementation-specific configuration, depending on the controller. A retry policy can amplify load when a backend is unhealthy. A canary header is useful for targeted testing, but it is not a release-management system and does not provide percentage progression by itself.

Use the video’s scenarios as test cases: send a request that should select the stable backend, add the canary header and confirm the alternate backend, and verify that unmatched hosts or paths behave as intended. If you need gradual rollout, define how the percentage changes, who changes it, and how rollback is performed; then confirm that the chosen implementation actually provides those controls.

What should you check before using a tutorial manifest?

Start with the API and implementation, then validate the route’s attachment and status before relying on its traffic behavior. A manifest can be syntactically accepted yet fail to attach to its intended parent or be unsupported in a particular controller version.

  1. Confirm the installed API resources. Check that the cluster has the Gateway API CRDs and versions required by the manifest.
  2. Confirm the implementation’s support. Check the relevant controller or mesh documentation for the route features and filters you intend to use.
  3. Inspect parent references and scope. Verify that the referenced Gateway or Service exists and that namespace and RBAC rules permit attachment.
  4. Read resource status and conditions. Use the implementation’s documented diagnostics to determine whether the route was accepted and attached, and investigate reported reasons if it was not.
  5. Exercise the match cases. Test requests that should match each host, path, or header rule, along with a request that should not match, before directing real traffic.

The workshop’s starting point—a cluster without a configured mesh and a demo application—is useful for seeing the configuration sequence. In an existing cluster, however, installed CRDs, namespaces, permissions, and controller versions may already differ from that baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A disciplined lab sequence is straightforward: install or enable the selected mesh and Gateway API CRDs; deploy the demo Service; create the GatewayClass and Gateway for ingress; attach an HTTPRoute; confirm status; test DNS, host, path, and header cases; then create a Service-parent route for an east-west test if the implementation supports it. Keep ingress and mesh tests separate so a failed request identifies the correct attachment path.

Common pitfalls the video cannot eliminate

  • Assuming a route is active because it was created. Acceptance and attachment conditions are the evidence that a controller recognized the object.
  • Copying namespaces unchanged. A parent in another namespace may require explicit permission, and a same-namespace route may merge with an existing route.
  • Confusing a header canary with weighted delivery. Header selection is deterministic for qualifying requests; it is not an automatic percentage rollout.
  • Expecting identical Linkerd and Istio behavior. Installation, supported filters, status reporting, and mesh integration can differ.
  • Ignoring version drift. The tutorial is dated April 12, 2024, while Gateway API documentation and controller releases continue to change.
  • Testing only successful matches. Include an unknown host, an unmatched path, and a request without the canary header to observe default or rejection behavior.

Who should watch this video, and what should they expect?

The tutorial is a good fit for Kubernetes users who understand Services and want a practical introduction to how Gateway API routing can be applied around a mesh. Its emphasis on starting from a demo setup and progressing through routing, resilience, progressive delivery, and ingress gives viewers a conceptual path from basic traffic entry to more involved traffic management.

It is less suitable as a standalone compatibility guide or as the final authority for production manifests. The page date is April 12, 2024, while Gateway API documentation continues to evolve. Treat the video as an explanation of concepts and examples, then check current API and implementation documentation for versions, feature support, and troubleshooting procedures before adapting its configuration.

Verdict

Buoyant’s workshop is valuable because it connects Gateway API objects to real ingress and mesh decisions instead of presenting isolated YAML. Its strongest lesson is the distinction between a Gateway parent for ingress and a Service parent for GAMMA mesh routing. Its main limitation is portability: Gateway API defines the vocabulary, but Linkerd, Istio, and other controllers determine the implemented feature set, status behavior, and operational details. Watch it as a guided lab, reproduce each match case, and validate every manifest against the versions and permissions in your own cluster.

Is Gateway API the same thing as Kubernetes Ingress?

No. Gateway API is a separate Kubernetes routing API with resources such as GatewayClass, Gateway, and HTTPRoute. The material covered here establishes how those resources work, but does not establish a migration procedure for existing Ingress objects.

Does adding a canary header automatically shift traffic gradually?

No. A header match selects requests that carry that header; it does not inherently allocate a percentage of traffic or increase that percentage over time. Confirm whether your chosen implementation supports the progressive-delivery behavior you need.

What should I do if my route is accepted but traffic does not reach the backend?

Check both attachment and route status conditions, then verify the parent reference, namespace permissions, match conditions, and backend Service reference. The exact diagnostic commands and status details depend on the controller or mesh in use.

Can separate teams create independent mesh routes for one Service in the same namespace?

Not necessarily. Routes for a Service in one namespace are merged under Gateway API rules, so namespace boundaries may be needed when teams require distinct consumer behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can one HTTPRoute be used for both ingress and mesh traffic?

The HTTPRoute kind is used in both patterns, but the parent reference and processing context differ. Ingress routes normally attach to a Gateway; GAMMA mesh routes attach to a Service. Verify that the implementation supports the intended attachment.

What does a GatewayClass contribute to ingress?

GatewayClass identifies the controller responsible for managing Gateway resources. It is part of the usual ingress model, while Gateway and GatewayClass are normally not used for the Service-parent pattern described for mesh traffic.

Is Gateway API portable between Linkerd and Istio?

The resource semantics are intended to be portable, but support is implementation-specific. Compare CRD and controller versions, supported matches and filters, attachment rules, status conditions, and mesh behavior before reusing manifests.

What happens when a mesh request matches none of the attached routes?

Under the GAMMA behavior described by the Gateway API project, requests matching none of the attached routes are rejected. If no routes are attached, the mesh follows its default behavior.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Gateway API can cover ingress and service-mesh routing, but the parent resource changes from Gateway to Service and controller support remains decisive. Use the video to learn the workflow, then verify versions, permissions, status, and unmatched-request behavior in your own Linkerd or Istio installation.
