Game Bub plays physical Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges, and it can load user-supplied homebrew ROM files from a microSD card. Cartridge play is a direct menu option; ROM loading requires a card formatted with the right file system and partition scheme. It does not include commercial ROMs or original Nintendo BIOS files.
Which games and media does Game Bub support?
Game Bub is an open-source FPGA handheld designed for the Game Boy family. Its documented game platforms are Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. You can use supported physical cartridges from those systems or load homebrew ROM files from microSD.
The official introduction also lists link-cable multiplayer and support for cartridge features including rumble, clocks, and motion sensors. An optional Game Bub Dock connects the handheld to a TV or monitor and supports compatible controllers; it is a separate accessory, not a requirement for handheld play. See the official Game Bub introduction.
How to play a physical cartridge
- Turn Game Bub off or leave it at the main menu before inserting or removing a cartridge.
- Insert a supported Game Boy, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance cartridge.
- Choose Run Cartridge from the main menu.
The documentation cautions against inserting or removing cartridges while a game is running, because doing so can risk data loss. Follow the Game Bub setup guide for the device’s current operating instructions.

How to load a homebrew ROM from microSD
ROM loading is optional. You need a microSD card formatted as FAT32 using an MBR partition table. The guide says exFAT and GPT are not supported for this setup.
- Prepare the microSD card with FAT32 and MBR, then place the homebrew ROM file on it.
- With Game Bub off, insert the card.
- Turn the device on and select Cores from the main menu.
- Select the appropriate core and browse to the ROM file.
The official guide describes loading homebrew ROMs; it does not say that commercial games are included. The existence of a ROM-loading feature does not grant permission to download or use copyrighted game files. See the official setup guide for details.

What about BIOS files?
Game Bub’s documentation says original Nintendo BIOS files for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cannot legally be redistributed. The handheld instead includes free, open-source replacement BIOS files. The documented limitations are:
- Game Boy Color compatibility-mode palette selection is unsupported.
- Game Boy Advance multi-boot is unsupported.
- Some Game Boy Advance games may have bugs because of compatibility issues.
These are specific caveats in the manufacturer’s documentation, not a claim that every game has the same issue.

Can Game Bub back up cartridges or saves?
Yes. Game Bub can work with FlashGBX software to dump cartridges and back up or restore saves. The project documentation notes a few uncommon flashcart limitations, so this should not be treated as universal compatibility with every cartridge or flashcart.
You can also mount the microSD card over USB, but the documented transfer speed is below 1 MB/sec. The project recommends using a dedicated card reader for large file transfers. See the Game Bub documentation for the backup and transfer guidance.

How can you get a Game Bub?
The official documentation directs buyers to Crowd Supply for the prebuilt handheld. The listing showed a price of $269 and “In stock” when accessed on October 4, 2026; price and availability can change, so check the current Crowd Supply listing before ordering. The listing also describes the separate Game Bub Dock.
A self-build is another route, but it involves PCB production and assembly as well as 3D-printed parts. The project warns that building one is not beginner-level and recommends electronics experience. Source and design files are published in the Game Bub project repository.
