Conversation can reduce some AI-related information risks: tailored, evidence-based dialogue has lowered belief in conspiracy claims in a controlled study, and conversational AI has helped people judge news in the moment. But dialogue is no safety guarantee. A persuasive assistant can also increase trust in inaccurate claims, and getting a better answer with AI does not necessarily teach someone to make better judgments without it. The evidence supports conversation as a possible, bounded mitigation—not a substitute for verification, accountability, or safeguards.

Which AI risks can conversation address?

Conversation is most relevant to risks involving how people encounter, interpret, and act on information. A dialogue can respond to a person’s specific concern, ask what evidence would matter to them, and explain why a claim is or is not supported. That is different from a system-level guarantee that an AI will be truthful, safe, or resistant to misuse.

The strongest evidence here concerns particular outcomes: confidence in conspiracy beliefs, accuracy judging news, political knowledge, and trust in generated information. Those measures matter, but they are not interchangeable. A person can make a more accurate judgment while an assistant is present without retaining a skill; reduced confidence in a claim does not by itself prove a change in real-world behavior; and higher trust is not beneficial if the information is wrong.

  • Potential benefit: targeted correction or support for evaluating a claim in a particular interaction.
  • Potential harm: persuasive, human-like dialogue can make inaccurate information seem more credible.
  • Unresolved question: whether a result in a study transfers to other systems, topics, populations, or real-world use at scale.

Can a tailored conversation change what someone believes?

It can, at least for some beliefs and study participants. In a 2024 Science study, researchers held personalized, evidence-based conversations with 2,190 people who believed conspiracy theories, using GPT-4 Turbo. Participants’ belief in the conspiracy claims they had discussed fell by about 20% on average; the effect persisted for two months and also extended to unrelated conspiracy beliefs and related behavioral intentions.

This is notable because the conversations addressed participants’ own claims rather than offering only a generic warning about misinformation. Tailoring may let a discussion engage with the particular evidence or reasoning a person finds persuasive. However, the finding is an average result from a defined intervention and participant group. It does not show that an AI can reliably change anyone’s mind, that every topic responds similarly, or that a change in measured belief produces the same change in conduct.

A preregistered 2025 experiment with 955 participants adds a useful qualification: LLM dialogue reduced confidence in conspiracy and other epistemically unwarranted beliefs, but researchers found no significant difference when the speaker was described as an AI rather than an expert, or when the tone was made more human-like. In that experiment, the dialogue’s effect was not explained by those identity and tone cues. This does not establish that identity or style never matters in other settings; it shows that they did not significantly distinguish outcomes in the conditions tested.

Does talking with AI help people learn, or just get a better answer?

It can improve a person’s judgment while the assistant is helping without improving their unaided skill afterward. A month-long MIT Media Lab study of 67 participants found that AI assistance increased accuracy on news-veracity judgments by about 21 percentage points on average during the interaction. The study did not find average improvement over time on new items when participants had to judge them without assistance.

The distinction is between assisted performance—how well a person does with help at hand—and independent learning—whether they can apply the skill later on their own. A system that checks a claim for you may help with that claim. That result alone cannot establish that you have learned how to check the next one.

The MIT study also reported an association between interaction patterns and later independent performance: participants who asked focused questions, probed the material, and worked through assessments step by step performed better on later unaided judgments than those whose interaction centered on receiving answers. This is a promising clue about how to use dialogue, not proof that any question-led format will cause learning. The overview of the study does not state its publication year, so the 21-point statistic should not be assigned a year on that basis.

How to use a conversation as a reasoning aid

If your aim is to build judgment, ask the assistant to help examine a claim rather than simply declare it true or false. For example, ask what evidence would support the claim, what evidence would weaken it, and which parts can be checked independently. Then do the checking yourself. Treat the exchange as a prompt to investigate, not as evidence that the investigation is complete.

If you need a quick decision, direct assistance may still be useful, but describe the result accurately: you used an assistant to help assess an item. Do not assume that a correct assisted judgment means you will make the same judgment unaided later.

Can conversational AI improve political information?

In UK experiments, conversational AI increased political knowledge by increasing belief in true information and decreasing belief in misinformation. Its effect was about as strong as self-directed web search in the settings tested. This suggests that dialogue can help people navigate political information; it does not establish that AI is universally better than searching, or that the same result will hold in a different country, population, or political context.

The method of comparison matters. A study result about knowledge or belief after a particular intervention does not settle broader questions about source quality, long-term retention, exposure to other claims, or the quality of someone’s eventual decision. Readers should take the finding as evidence that conversational AI can be useful for political information in tested settings, not as a general endorsement of any chatbot as a political authority.

Can conversation also make misinformation more persuasive?

Yes. The same qualities that make dialogue engaging can increase the influence of inaccurate information. AI Security Institute experiments found that post-training and prompting increased political persuasiveness by as much as 51% and 27%, respectively; where these approaches increased persuasion, they also systematically decreased factual accuracy. The reported figures are maximum increases in the experiments, not a claim that every model or conversation becomes more persuasive by those amounts. The research page does not state a publication year.

A separate preregistered experiment with 477 participants found that stronger conversational cues increased trust in an assistant that supplied misinformation. In that study, which concerned health misinformation, a verification affordance reduced the perceived credibility of the generated information. This supports making verification available and usable, but it does not demonstrate that a check feature prevents every kind of harm in ordinary use.

Together, these findings show why “more conversational” and “more reliable” are not synonyms. Fluency and responsiveness can help a person engage with evidence, but they can also make a false claim sound convincing. A reader should evaluate the evidence offered, not infer accuracy from confidence, warmth, detail, or a natural-sounding exchange.

What does the evidence show—and not show—about different approaches?

The results differ because the studies ask different questions. This table summarizes the measured outcomes without treating one as a general score for conversational AI.

Approach or setting Reported result What the result supports What it does not establish
Personalized, evidence-based dialogue about conspiracy beliefs About a 20% reduction in belief among 2,190 conspiracy believers; effects persisted for two months and generalized to unrelated conspiracies and related behavioral intentions. Costello, Pennycook, and Rand, 2024. Some targeted conversations can shift measured beliefs and intentions beyond the immediate exchange. Reliable persuasion of every person, across all subjects, or proof of lasting behavior change.
LLM dialogue with different speaker descriptions and tones In a preregistered 2025 experiment (N=955), dialogue reduced confidence in conspiracy and epistemically unwarranted beliefs; there were no significant differences between AI and expert framing or between tested tones. Belief change did not significantly depend on those identity and tone conditions in this experiment. That speaker identity or tone never affects trust or persuasion in other contexts.
AI assistance for news-veracity judgments About a 21-percentage-point average accuracy increase during assistance in a month-long study of 67 people; no average improvement on new items judged independently over time. Assistance can improve judgments in the moment. That assisted accuracy equals durable learning or unaided skill.
Persuasion-oriented post-training and prompting Political persuasiveness increased by up to 51% with post-training and up to 27% with prompting; increases in persuasion were accompanied by systematic decreases in factual accuracy. AI Security Institute; year not stated on the research page. Methods that increase persuasive effect can create a factuality trade-off. That the maximum reported changes apply to every system, prompt, or interaction.
Conversational cues and verification for health misinformation In a preregistered experiment (N=477), stronger conversational cues increased trust in an assistant supplying misinformation; a verification affordance reduced perceived credibility. Conversational presentation can affect trust, and verification can change perceived credibility in the tested setting. That a verification feature prevents misinformation harms generally.
Political-information experiments in the UK Conversational AI increased political knowledge by increasing belief in true information and decreasing belief in misinformation, about as effectively as self-directed web search. Dialogue can support political knowledge in the tested settings. A universal ranking of AI against search or a result that generalizes to every country or user group.

How should readers judge whether a conversational approach is useful?

There is no single best product or system established by these studies. If you are choosing how to use a conversational tool—or evaluating a feature—look at what outcome matters and whether the exchange makes its claims inspectable.

  • Assistance or learning? Decide whether you need help with this item or want to improve your own future judgments. These are different outcomes, and a useful answer to one does not prove success at the other.
  • Evidence quality and traceability: Can you identify the evidence behind a claim and check it independently? A confident answer without inspectable support is not verification.
  • Interaction style: Does the assistant explain and invite scrutiny, or mainly supply a polished conclusion? Question-led reasoning may be more useful for practicing judgment, although the reported relationship is not proof of a guaranteed learning effect.
  • Verification affordance: Is there a practical way to inspect or check the information? The experiment on health misinformation found a credibility effect from verification, but not a universal safeguard.
  • Outcome and duration: Is success measured as belief confidence, accuracy, knowledge, intention, or later behavior—and immediately or over time? A short-term improvement should not be described as durable change unless later outcomes were measured.

These questions help keep a claim proportionate to its evidence. For instance, an assistant may be helpful for scrutinizing a specific claim while remaining an unreliable source of unverified facts; likewise, a study may find a lasting belief effect without showing that the approach is safe to deploy broadly.

What are the limits of these findings?

Each result belongs to its study design, sample, and outcome. The conspiracy intervention involved a specific population and evidence-based conversations; the trust experiment examined health misinformation; the political-information findings came from UK experiments; and the learning study was small, with 67 participants. The evidence does not justify merging these into one universal conclusion about all conversational systems or users.

There is also a gap between demonstrating a capability and demonstrating safe deployment. A system able to craft tailored, compelling explanations may be used to correct a false belief, but the same ability can be used to manipulate. A 2026 review describes evidence as promising for reducing science skepticism while emphasizing safeguards for informational integrity and public trust. That is a case for treating conversational mitigation as one part of a broader safety effort, not as a replacement for it.

Anthropic has separately analyzed 1.5 million conversations on Claude.ai and reported that severe potential disempowerment, under the company’s defined category, was rare in that dataset. That is a company-reported estimate about a specific service and conversation set—not a population-wide estimate and not evidence about every AI system. It should not be used to infer that conversational AI is generally unlikely to cause harm.

What should users do when an AI gives a convincing answer?

Use the conversation to clarify the claim and identify what would count as evidence, then check important assertions against sources you can inspect. Be especially cautious when the answer concerns consequential decisions or when the assistant offers certainty without showing a way to verify the information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Separate the claim from its presentation. Write down the factual assertion you need to assess; a fluent or empathetic explanation is not evidence for it.
  2. Ask what would change the conclusion. Request the strongest evidence for and against the claim, and ask which parts are uncertain or independently checkable.
  3. Verify the material points. Follow the evidence to sources that can be examined, rather than treating the assistant’s summary as its own proof.
  4. Keep the outcome in perspective. If the tool helped you judge one item, count that as assistance. Test your own understanding separately if your goal is to learn.

These practices do not make a system error-proof. They reduce the chance that trust in the conversation is mistaken for evidence, while preserving the useful role dialogue can play in focused correction and analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does conversation reduce technical AI risks such as system misuse or unsafe capabilities?

The studies summarized here measure information-related outcomes such as belief, trust, news judgment, and political knowledge. They do not establish that dialogue mitigates technical risks such as model misuse or unsafe system capabilities.

Does a change in belief mean someone will change what they do?

Not necessarily. The 2024 conspiracy study reported effects on related behavioral intentions, but an intention measure is not the same as observing real-world behavior.

Can I treat a company’s chatbot-conversation statistics as a rate for all AI users?

No. For example, Anthropic’s analysis covered conversations on Claude.ai and used the company’s own definition of potentially severe disempowerment. Its estimate cannot be assumed to describe other services or the broader population.

Is there one conversational AI system proven to be safest for misinformation?

The cited studies do not compare consumer products to establish a safest system. They test particular interventions, tasks, and features, so their results do not amount to a product-wide safety ranking.
