Canva may generate an image from a prompt naming an artist or recognizable character, but that does not mean Canva has licensed the style or character, or cleared the result for you to use. Canva’s AI Product Terms put responsibility for both prompts and outputs on the user, and its Intellectual Property Policy requires users not to violate third-party rights. Whether a particular image can be published or sold depends on what it depicts, how closely it resembles protected material, the intended use, and the law that applies.
Can Canva generate an image in an artist’s style or of a copyrighted character?
It can technically produce images from prompts that name an artist or a character. That is a description of what the tool may do, not a grant of permission from the artist or character owner. Canva’s published terms do not provide a style-specific safe harbor or promise that character-referencing outputs are authorized.
There are two separate questions: whether the tool will generate an image, and whether you have the rights needed to use that image as intended. A generated result can raise concerns even if you did not upload a reference image; conversely, mentioning a name in a prompt does not by itself establish whether a particular output infringes anyone’s rights. The image and its context matter.

Canva’s AI Product Terms, effective June 26, 2026, say the user is responsible for text, images, and other material entered into its AI products, as well as the resulting output. They require users to have the necessary rights, licenses, and permissions for inputs and allow output to be used for a lawful purpose at the user’s own risk.

That division matters in practice: Canva’s contractual permission to use output lawfully is not a finding that every output is lawful, nor does it transfer the burden of clearing third-party material to Canva. The user needs to consider the prompt and any uploaded references before generation, then assess the finished image and planned use before sharing it.
Canva’s Intellectual Property Policy adds that content uploaded or put into a design must not violate third-party rights. The policy covers copyright and trademark notice procedures. It is not a general license to include someone else’s artwork, characters, logos, or branding in a design.
What should I check before using an artist-style image?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer for every prompt that names an artist. Canva’s published terms do not set out a special rule that makes all style references safe or all of them prohibited. The more the result reproduces protected expression or closely imitates a particular work, the more careful the review should be.

Ask whether the image resembles a particular existing work, rather than relying on the fact that the generator created it.
- Check for specific, recognizable material. A prompt or result that brings in distinctive elements from an identifiable work presents a different review question from a broad stylistic description.
- Review branding and implied endorsement. A name, logo, or presentation that suggests an artist or rights holder endorsed the image can raise concerns beyond the image’s visual content.
- Match the review to the planned use. A public advertisement or product for sale merits more scrutiny than an unpublished draft, because the audience, distribution, and commercial context are different.
These are risk indicators, not a legal test that determines the outcome. Copyright, trademark, publicity, and other rules vary by jurisdiction and depend on the facts. If you want to use a close imitation in a public or commercial project, get advice from qualified local counsel rather than treating a prompt formulation as clearance.

Can I generate a copyrighted character in Canva?
A recognizable character can implicate more than one kind of right. Copyright may apply to protected character expression, while a name, logo, or branded presentation may also raise trademark questions. Canva does not promise that a generated character image is authorized by its owner, and its policy requires users to avoid designs that violate third-party rights.
For example, a prompt asking for a familiar character may yield an output that resembles that character even if the image is not copied from an uploaded reference. The relevant question is not simply whether the file is newly generated; it is whether the result and its use create a rights problem under the law that applies. A recognizable figure used on a product, in an advertisement, or alongside branding deserves particular care.
Before publishing a character-based design, identify the rights holder and check whether a license covers the specific use, geography, audience, and product. Do not assume that permission to use Canva’s tool is permission to use the character. For a named character or commercial product, a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction can assess the specific image and use.
Can I sell or publish an image made with Canva AI?
Canva’s commercial-use guidance says a product for sale must be an original design and that Canva content cannot be sold on a standalone basis. It lists posters, mugs, T-shirts, stickers, e-books, and magazines as examples of products that may be sold under applicable license conditions. Those rules do not settle whether an image that imitates an artist or depicts a protected character is lawful.

For a product listing, client project, campaign, or other public release, assess two different layers:
- Canva’s conditions: Is the design original, and does the use comply with the applicable Canva license and terms?
- Third-party rights: Does the output, its branding, or the way it is presented raise copyright, trademark, publicity, endorsement, or other local-law concerns?
Passing the first check does not answer the second. Canva’s statement that output may be used for lawful purposes is conditional on lawful use; it does not erase a character owner’s or artist’s rights. If either the output or its commercial presentation is close to a specific protected work, pause publication until the rights question is resolved.
Do I own the image Canva generated, and is it copyrighted?
Canva’s help center says that, between the user and Canva and to the extent permitted by law, the user owns images made with Magic Media, DALL·E, and Imagen by Google Cloud. Canva immediately qualifies that statement: copyright protection depends on local law, and many jurisdictions, including the United States, do not protect AI-created works.

For the United States, the Copyright Office’s 2025 report says generative-AI output can be protected only where a human author determines sufficient expressive elements. The Office says mere prompting is insufficient, while creative human arrangement or modification may support copyright in the human-authored aspects. Its March 16, 2023 registration guidance similarly explains that when a machine determines the expressive elements, that material is not human authorship; human selection, arrangement, or modification can support protection for those human-created aspects.
So, an image’s contractual ownership status, its copyrightability, and the legality of using third-party subject matter are separate questions. A person who adds original composition or meaningful edits may have a stronger basis to claim rights in those human contributions under U.S. guidance, but that does not automatically clear any protected material the image depicts.

Use this review sequence before publishing, sending to a client, or putting a design on a product:
- Review every input. Identify any uploaded image, text, or other reference and confirm you have the rights, licenses, and permissions needed to use it in an AI product.
- Inspect the finished image. Check for recognizable characters, close resemblance to a specific artwork, logos, names, and branding, including elements you did not intend to include.
- Define the use. Record where the image will appear, what it will promote or be sold on, and the intended audience and geography. These details affect what rights and laws need review.
- Check permissions for third-party material. If the design features an identifiable character or closely imitates a particular work, consult the relevant rights holder’s license terms or obtain qualified local legal advice.
- Verify Canva’s design and license conditions. For a product you plan to sell, confirm that the overall design is original and that the use follows the applicable Canva conditions; do not sell Canva content on a standalone basis.
- Hold the release if a material question remains. A successful generation or export is not evidence that the output has been legally cleared.
This process cannot guarantee that no one will object. It helps separate what Canva permits under its own terms from the independent question of third-party rights, so you can address unresolved issues before distribution.

What happens if someone raises an intellectual-property complaint?
Canva’s Intellectual Property Policy describes copyright and trademark notice procedures. That means an image’s appearance in a Canva design does not prevent a rights holder from raising a complaint, and the user should not treat generation as a defense or clearance.
If a notice arrives, review what material is identified, what right is asserted, and which use or design is at issue. Consider pausing distribution while you assess the claim and consult qualified local counsel, especially if the image is being used commercially or in multiple countries. The specific response depends on the notice and applicable law; Canva’s policy should be consulted for its current procedures.

If I change the prompt, does that make a character image safe to use?
Not necessarily. A changed prompt does not itself establish permission or resolve whether the resulting image still depicts a recognizable character; review the output and intended use, not just the wording that produced it.
Can Canva guarantee that nobody will make an intellectual-property claim about my AI image?
No such guarantee appears in Canva’s cited terms. Canva says lawful use is at the user’s own risk, and its Intellectual Property Policy describes copyright and trademark notice procedures.
Should I get legal advice before using a recognizable character in an ad or product?
