Usually not from the transit network. Yggdrasil encrypts traffic end to end, so an antivirus appliance, IDS, or firewall sensor positioned between the sender and destination cannot decrypt the application payload as it crosses the overlay. Detection moves to the endpoints: the computers that terminate the Yggdrasil connection can inspect processes, files, services, persistence, and behavior after local decryption. Network controls still help by restricting inbound IPv6 exposure and blocking known public Yggdrasil peers.

This distinction matters because malware can use Yggdrasil as a private communications path without Yggdrasil being the original cause of infection. ESET’s 22 October 2026 report on the MythicRatatoskr Go backdoor describes that exact pattern: initial access followed by command and control hosted inside the Yggdrasil mesh.

What can antivirus see when Yggdrasil traffic crosses the network?

A sensor that only sees forwarded Yggdrasil traffic can normally inspect connection metadata, timing, volume, and peer addresses, but not the original application content. Yggdrasil’s project documentation says that all traffic is encrypted end to end and can be decrypted only by its intended recipient. Its implementation documentation explains that even plaintext application traffic is encrypted with the destination node’s public key before intermediate nodes forward it.

Consequently, a transit antivirus engine cannot apply its usual payload signatures to an HTTP request, file transfer, shell command, or screenshot moving through the overlay. It may still identify that a host is creating Yggdrasil connections, notice unusual traffic patterns, or enforce policy against particular addresses, but those observations are different from reading the malware’s command-and-control messages.

The endpoint is the meaningful inspection boundary. On a computer that terminates the Yggdrasil session, local security software can observe the process that opens the connection, decrypted data handed to that process, files written to disk, services or scheduled tasks created for persistence, and follow-on behavior. That is an architectural inference from Yggdrasil’s encryption boundary and the host artifacts described in the MythicRatatoskr case; it is not a published guarantee that every endpoint product will detect every Yggdrasil-using threat.

Why does Yggdrasil encryption bypass ordinary network antivirus inspection?

Yggdrasil is an encrypted IPv6 overlay network. Nodes forward packets for one another, but the application payload is protected for the final destination rather than for each hop. An intermediate node therefore has no decryption key for the contents it carries.

What the intermediate sensor can observe

  • Source and destination overlay or peer addresses visible at that inspection point.
  • Connection start and stop times, packet counts, sizes, and direction.
  • The fact that a host is using Yggdrasil and, depending on placement, which public peers it contacts.
  • Local policy violations such as an unexpected outbound connection or an unapproved Yggdrasil interface.

What it cannot reliably observe

  • The JSON, HTTP, HTTPS, shell command, file, or screenshot inside the encrypted session.
  • Malware strings or exploit signatures that exist only in the application payload.
  • The true intent of a connection based solely on encrypted packet size or timing.

HTTPS layered inside Yggdrasil makes payload inspection even less available to a transit device. Decrypting traffic at a gateway would require the gateway to terminate the relevant connection and possess the destination-side cryptographic context; simply placing an antivirus box on the forwarding path does not provide that capability.

What did the MythicRatatoskr case show?

ESET reported on 22 October 2026 that MythicRatatoskr was a previously undocumented Go backdoor. Its command-and-control server was hosted inside the Yggdrasil mesh, and the malware used Yggdrasil to reach that server. The report describes JSON-encoded HTTP POST requests and HTTPS over port 443 routed through the mesh.

After installation, the backdoor checked in with victim metadata, polled for tasks, accepted shell and file commands, and could exfiltrate files and screenshots. Those actions create host-level evidence even when the network path is opaque: a new executable, a suspicious parent-child process chain, an unusual service, an unexpected Yggdrasil process, files staged for transfer, or a command interpreter launched by a server component.

ESET says the campaign began with spearphishing access in July 2025 and later included destructive activity attributed to a Sandworm handoff assessment. The report presents Yggdrasil as the communications layer used after initial access, not as the mechanism that caused the compromise. That distinction is important when deciding whether to remove the overlay, investigate phishing, or both.

Will endpoint antivirus or EDR catch a Yggdrasil backdoor?

Endpoint protection is the best place to look, but no cited source supplies a vendor-specific detection guarantee, detection rate, false-positive rate, or prevalence statistic. A product may detect the backdoor’s file, behavior, persistence, or command execution; it may also miss a new or modified sample until its rules and models are updated.

Evidence endpoint tools can use

  • File and memory activity: newly created executables, unpacked payloads, unusual libraries, or code injected into another process.
  • Process behavior: a Yggdrasil-related process spawning a shell, scripting engine, archive utility, or credential-access tool.
  • Persistence: new services, startup entries, scheduled tasks, launch agents, or other mechanisms that survive reboot.
  • Network ownership: an unsigned or unexpected process binding to the Yggdrasil interface or making repeated connections to unfamiliar peers.
  • Data access: bulk reads of documents, screenshots, archives, or removable-media content followed by outbound transfer.

These signals are available because the endpoint decrypts traffic for its own applications and observes the programs using the resulting data. They are not dependent on a network appliance being able to read the transit payload.

Why a clean antivirus scan is not proof of safety

A backdoor can be fileless, dormant, newly compiled, packed, or configured to use ordinary system tools. A scanner that reports no signature match has not proved that the Yggdrasil path is benign. Investigators should correlate endpoint telemetry with account activity, email records, process ancestry, persistence locations, and peer-address connections.

Can a firewall block Yggdrasil command and control?

Yes, but the control must be designed around the overlay and the risk you are trying to reduce. Yggdrasil’s documentation recommends an IPv6-capable firewall that blocks unexpected incoming traffic because services on a machine can otherwise become reachable by users of the public Yggdrasil network. ESET also identifies blocking public Yggdrasil peer addresses as a viable mitigation for the documented MythicRatatoskr campaign.

Host firewall controls

  • Apply a default-deny rule for unexpected inbound IPv6 traffic on the Yggdrasil interface.
  • Allow only the services and source ranges that the host actually needs.
  • Restrict which local programs may create outbound Yggdrasil connections when your firewall supports application rules.
  • Log denied inbound attempts and review repeated outbound connections to unfamiliar peers.

Network firewall controls

  • Block public peer addresses associated with an incident, using the addresses and time window supplied by your incident responders.
  • Prevent unauthorized hosts from installing or enabling Yggdrasil where organizational policy forbids it.
  • Alert when a workstation or server first presents a Yggdrasil interface or begins sustained overlay traffic.

Peer blocking is a mitigation, not a replacement for eradication. Addresses can change, and a compromised host may use another channel. Removing the backdoor, rotating exposed credentials, and checking for persistence remain necessary.

How should security teams investigate suspected malware using Yggdrasil?

Use a layered response that starts with containment and preserves the endpoint evidence that a transit sensor cannot provide.

  1. Contain the host. Isolate the suspected computer with your endpoint platform or switch controls while preserving the ability to collect volatile evidence where your procedures allow it.
  2. Record the overlay context. Note the Yggdrasil node identity, local IPv6 addresses, peer addresses, interface state, listening services, and the process that owns each connection.
  3. Collect endpoint telemetry. Export process trees, command lines, file hashes, creation times, service and scheduled-task changes, login events, and relevant memory or disk images.
  4. Inspect persistence and execution. Look for unfamiliar binaries, Go executables, shell launches, encoded scripts, newly created accounts, and software installed near the first suspicious connection.
  5. Search for peer reuse. Use the public peer addresses and indicators from the incident to find other hosts making the same connections. ESET’s mitigation guidance specifically supports blocking known public peers.
  6. Reset exposed secrets. Rotate credentials and tokens that the backdoor could have accessed, prioritizing privileged, service, cloud, and remote-access accounts.
  7. Eradicate and validate. Remove malicious files and persistence or reimage the host according to your response standard, then verify that no unauthorized Yggdrasil process, interface, service, or peer connection returns.

Do not rely on a single packet capture to reconstruct the attacker’s commands. The encrypted transit stream may show when communication occurred but not what the operator requested. Endpoint logs, memory capture, application logs, and the backdoor’s own artifacts are more likely to reveal the task history.

Which control should you use: endpoint antivirus, network IDS, or a firewall?

Each control sees a different part of the problem. The following comparison keeps the inspection point and response action separate.

Control Inspection point Useful visibility Practical response
Endpoint antivirus or EDR The host terminating Yggdrasil and running the software Files, processes, services, persistence, decrypted application use, and behavior Quarantine, kill processes, isolate the host, remove persistence, and investigate artifacts
Transit antivirus or IDS An intermediate forwarding path Peer addresses, timing, volume, and other metadata; not the end-to-end payload Alert on policy or traffic anomalies and pass indicators to endpoint responders
IPv6 host or network firewall The host interface or network boundary Inbound and outbound reachability and rule matches Block unexpected inbound exposure and restrict unauthorized connections
Peer-address blocking Network egress or endpoint policy Connections to identified public Yggdrasil peers Disrupt the documented command-and-control path while investigation proceeds

In practice, endpoint telemetry answers “what executed and what did it do?” A firewall answers “which connections are allowed?” A transit sensor answers “what traffic pattern and peer activity can be seen?” Combining them is stronger than expecting any one device to decrypt Yggdrasil.

What are the main limitations of detecting threats over Yggdrasil?

  • Encryption limits content inspection. Intermediate tools cannot apply ordinary payload signatures to traffic they cannot decrypt.
  • Metadata is ambiguous. A long-lived or high-volume connection may be unusual without proving malicious activity.
  • Peer blocking can be incomplete. Attackers may change peers, use private nodes, or fall back to another protocol.
  • Endpoint tools vary. The available telemetry and behavioral coverage depend on the operating system, agent configuration, logging retention, and product capabilities.
  • Public reachability creates exposure. An unfiltered IPv6 interface can make local services visible to other Yggdrasil users.
  • There is no established universal rate. No authoritative figure in the cited material measures antivirus detection, false positives, prevalence, or sample size for Yggdrasil traffic.

These limitations do not make Yggdrasil inherently malicious. They mean that a security architecture must treat it as an encrypted, public, untrusted network and place its strongest content and behavior controls on the endpoints.

How can organizations reduce Yggdrasil-related risk before an incident?

  1. Define whether Yggdrasil is an approved business service. If it is not, document a policy for preventing installation and alerting on its interface or processes.
  2. Deploy an IPv6-capable host firewall and block unexpected inbound traffic on Yggdrasil interfaces, following the project’s own recommendation.
  3. Keep endpoint antivirus or EDR enabled with process, file, persistence, and network telemetry retained long enough to investigate delayed discovery.
  4. Alert on new Yggdrasil installations, unsigned binaries, unusual peer relationships, and shell or scripting activity launched by network-facing programs.
  5. Prepare a peer-blocking procedure that can be applied quickly without assuming the block alone removes malware.
  6. Exercise an isolation-and-reimage workflow so responders can preserve evidence, rotate credentials, and verify that the overlay connection does not return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using Yggdrasil automatically mean a computer is infected?

No. Yggdrasil is a networking layer, and legitimate users may deploy it for private connectivity. Treat an unexpected installation, unexplained peer activity, or suspicious process behavior as an investigation trigger rather than proof of compromise.

Can HTTPS inspection at a company gateway reveal a Yggdrasil backdoor?

Only if the gateway is actually terminating the relevant application connection and the traffic is routed through that inspection point in a way the gateway can decrypt. A conventional gateway that merely forwards encrypted Yggdrasil packets cannot inspect the inner HTTPS requests.

Should an organization block all Yggdrasil traffic?

That depends on whether the overlay has an approved use. A blanket block can disrupt legitimate systems, while an allowlist of authorized hosts and peers gives tighter control; either approach should be paired with endpoint monitoring and inbound IPv6 filtering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What evidence should be preserved before removing a Yggdrasil backdoor?

Capture volatile process and connection data, the Yggdrasil configuration and node identity, relevant endpoint logs, suspicious binaries and hashes, persistence entries, and authentication records. Preserve timestamps and chain-of-custody details so peer activity can be compared across hosts.
