Yes. An AI PC can run PC games without a dedicated graphics card by using the integrated GPU (iGPU) built into its processor. Whether the experience is smooth depends on the exact iGPU, laptop or desktop power and cooling design, memory configuration, drivers, and the game’s resolution and settings. “AI PC” and “Copilot+ PC” describe features such as an NPU for local AI workloads; they are not gaming-performance ratings.

A useful real-world example is AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, which includes Radeon 890M integrated graphics. In AMD’s 2025 comparison, that configuration averaged 17% faster gaming than an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H with Arc 140T across 27 titles at 1080p on low settings. That is a vendor test of specific systems and conditions, not a promise that every laptop with either processor will deliver the same result.

How can an AI PC run games without a dedicated GPU?

Games need a graphics processor to render frames, but that processor does not have to be a separate expansion card. An AI PC’s processor package can contain CPU cores, an NPU for AI workloads, and an integrated GPU. The iGPU performs the game’s rendering while drawing power and memory from the main system.

The NPU and iGPU do different jobs. An NPU accelerates selected machine-learning operations used by features such as live captions, camera effects, or other local AI functions. It does not automatically increase a game’s frame rate. For many Copilot+ features, Microsoft specifies an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS; that qualification number says nothing about how quickly a particular game will render.

Because the iGPU is part of the processor platform, its sustained performance is shaped by the whole computer. A thin laptop with conservative power limits can perform differently from a larger laptop using the same processor. Cooling capacity, firmware, memory speed and channel configuration, graphics-driver version, Windows power mode, and whether the system is plugged in all matter.

What gaming performance can integrated graphics deliver?

There is no single “AI PC gaming” level. Compare the named integrated GPU and the test conditions, not the AI label. Integrated graphics are generally most comfortable with games that offer scalable settings, competitive games, older releases, indie titles, and lower render resolutions. Newer, visually demanding games may require a low preset, reduced resolution, or an upscaling feature, and some may remain unsuitable for the experience you want.

A published average cannot be converted into a guaranteed frame rate for an untested title. A game can be limited by graphics throughput, CPU simulation, memory bandwidth, shader compilation, or thermal throttling. Even two laptops carrying the same processor can diverge after several minutes of play as their cooling systems and power policies settle.

Published AMD comparison: Ryzen AI 9 HX 370

AMD’s 2025 comparison maps the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 to Radeon 890M integrated graphics and compares it with an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H using Arc 140T graphics. AMD reports an average 17% gaming advantage across 27 game titles at 1080p on low settings.

That figure is useful as a reference for the tested configurations, but it is not an independent industry benchmark and does not establish a minimum frame rate. AMD’s page is a vendor comparison; the exact laptop designs, memory setup, drivers, and power behavior determine how closely another computer matches it.

Published 2026 laptop test

AMD also describes a gaming test conducted in March 2026 comparing a Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 9 386H laptop. The test used 1080p low settings, Windows’ Best Performance mode, and 32 GB of memory, with the specific laptop models identified on AMD’s page. AMD notes that manufacturers’ configurations can vary.

Use this result to understand the importance of test conditions rather than as a universal ranking. A laptop running on battery, a different driver, a quieter power profile, or a different memory arrangement is not the same test system.

Which specifications matter more than the AI branding?

When you compare an AI PC for gaming, start with the graphics and platform details that directly affect rendering.

  • Exact integrated GPU: “Radeon 890M” or another named model is more informative than “AI PC.” Different iGPUs can have very different execution resources and memory behavior.
  • Processor model: The CPU determines which iGPU is included and how much power the platform can allocate between CPU and graphics work.
  • Memory capacity and bandwidth: An iGPU uses system memory rather than its own graphics-memory pool. Check the installed capacity and whether the manufacturer specifies the memory arrangement and speed.
  • Sustained power and cooling: A chassis that can hold higher clocks during a long session may outperform a thinner design with the same chip.
  • Driver and firmware support: Graphics drivers can affect compatibility and performance. Compare systems using current, supported drivers.
  • Power profile: A Best Performance or equivalent mode can produce different results from a quiet or battery-saving mode, often with more heat, fan noise, and power use.
  • Display and target resolution: A 1080p panel is a lighter rendering target than a higher-resolution display. Decide whether you want the game rendered at the panel’s native resolution or at a lower internal resolution.

Ask for the same game, resolution, preset, driver, memory, and power mode when comparing benchmark claims. If one source does not disclose those conditions, its number cannot be compared confidently with a fully documented test.

What does a dedicated graphics card change?

A dedicated GPU has its own graphics memory and a separate power and cooling budget. That usually gives it more headroom for high resolutions, demanding effects, texture storage, and sustained frame rates. It also adds cost, weight, heat, fan noise, and—on a desktop—the need to check case clearance, power-supply capacity, and slot compatibility.

An iGPU can be the better fit when you value a lighter, quieter, simpler computer and play games that scale well to modest settings. It is less flexible when you expect to run demanding new releases at high settings, use a high-resolution external display, or maintain a high refresh rate in graphics-heavy games. The right choice is determined by your game list and target settings, not by whether a product carries an AI badge.

Can upscaling make an integrated-GPU laptop more playable?

Upscaling can improve the trade-off between image quality and frame rate by rendering a game at a lower internal resolution and reconstructing an output image. Microsoft’s Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) is one example, but it is a compatibility feature, not a universal switch that works with every game or every computer.

Microsoft’s support documentation lists these requirements for Auto SR:

  • A supported device and compatible graphics and neural-processor drivers.
  • Windows 11 version 24H2 or later.
  • A display with 1080p resolution or higher.
  • A game running natively on x64, x64 emulation, or Arm64.
  • DirectX 10 or later.

The documentation lists DirectX 9, Vulkan, and OpenGL among unsupported graphics formats or runtimes. Auto SR also applies to a curated set of games, and the ideal input-resolution range varies by device class. Check Microsoft’s current compatibility list for the exact computer and game before treating the feature as part of your buying decision.

Upscaling cannot fix every bottleneck. If the CPU is limiting the game, the title is incompatible, or the iGPU is already out of memory bandwidth, lowering the internal resolution may produce little improvement. Microsoft describes the basic trade-off clearly: increasing resolution or graphics settings improves visual quality but can reduce frame rate, while lowering them improves frame rate at the cost of image quality.

How should I configure an AI PC for gaming without a dedicated GPU?

Use a repeatable setup so you can tell whether a change actually helps.

  1. Install current updates. Apply Windows updates and the graphics driver supplied for your exact processor and computer model. Laptop manufacturers sometimes customize drivers and power controls, so check the model’s support page as well as the processor vendor’s guidance.
  2. Play while plugged in. Battery operation commonly uses a lower power limit. If you want to compare your result with a published test, match its power mode and plugged-in condition.
  3. Select a performance power mode. In Windows, open Settings > System > Power & battery and choose the highest performance option available when you need maximum sustained speed. Expect more heat, fan noise, and battery drain.
  4. Start at 1080p low. This is the condition used in AMD’s cited comparisons and gives you a consistent baseline. If the game is stable, raise one setting at a time rather than changing everything simultaneously.
  5. Use the game’s own resolution scale or supported upscaler. Lower the internal render resolution before sacrificing every visual setting. If you use Auto SR, verify the Windows version, drivers, display, API, architecture, and game support first.
  6. Watch for sustained throttling. A short benchmark can look good before the chassis reaches its steady temperature. Test a representative session and note whether clocks or frame rates decline after several minutes.
  7. Keep background workloads modest. Large downloads, video encoding, browser tabs, or local AI tasks compete for power, memory, and thermal capacity while you play.

What should I check before buying an AI PC for games?

Use this checklist with the exact product configuration, not just the processor family.

  • Confirm the integrated GPU model in the specifications.
  • Find a benchmark for the games you actually play, with the same resolution and preset you intend to use.
  • Check the laptop’s installed memory, memory arrangement if disclosed, and whether it can be upgraded.
  • Look for the tested power mode, plugged-in status, driver version, and test date.
  • Read the cooling and power behavior in reviews of the exact chassis; processor-level results do not make every laptop equivalent.
  • Verify display resolution and refresh rate. A high-refresh panel does not guarantee that the iGPU can feed it in demanding games.
  • If Auto SR is important, confirm Windows 11 24H2 or later, a 1080p-or-higher display, current graphics and neural-processor drivers, and a supported game.
  • Check the seller’s return policy. Integrated-graphics performance is configuration-specific, and your results may differ from a vendor’s average.

Why can two AI PCs with the same processor perform differently?

The processor name identifies a platform, not a complete gaming system. Manufacturers can configure different sustained power limits, cooling assemblies, memory arrangements, firmware policies, and display resolutions around the same chip. Drivers and Windows power modes can also change the result.

This is why AMD’s published figures identify laptop configurations and testing conditions and caution that manufacturers’ configurations vary. Treat a benchmark as evidence about the tested system. Do not transfer its average directly to a different chassis, game, preset, or battery condition.

What problems are common when gaming on integrated graphics?

The game runs, but the frame rate is uneven

Reduce the most expensive settings first—usually resolution, shadows, volumetric effects, and reflections—and test one change at a time. Confirm that the computer is plugged in and not in a quiet or battery-saving mode. A long test is more revealing than a short launch sequence because heat can reduce sustained performance.

The game does not start or the upscaler is unavailable

Check the game’s graphics API and architecture against the feature requirements. Auto SR does not cover DirectX 9, Vulkan, or OpenGL titles according to Microsoft’s support documentation, and it is limited to a curated game list. Update the graphics and neural-processor drivers, then verify that the system is on Windows 11 24H2 or later with a 1080p-or-higher display.

The laptop feels slower on battery

That behavior is expected on many portable systems because battery power limits are lower than plugged-in performance modes. Compare battery and AC results separately; do not judge the computer against an AC benchmark while unplugged.

A vendor average does not match my result

Recheck the game version, resolution, preset, driver, memory, laptop model, and power mode. AMD’s 17% figure is an average across 27 titles at 1080p low for named configurations, not a guarantee for every title or machine.

So, is an AI PC without a dedicated GPU good for gaming?

Yes, if your expectations match the integrated GPU and the computer’s design. An AI PC can render and play games without a dedicated graphics card, and systems using capable integrated graphics such as Radeon 890M may deliver useful 1080p-low performance in a broad range of titles. The AI or Copilot+ label should be treated as an indicator of local AI capability, not as evidence of gaming speed.

Choose by exact iGPU, memory, cooling, sustained power, drivers, target resolution, and the games you intend to play. Use vendor benchmarks as configuration-specific references, verify Auto SR compatibility instead of assuming it works universally, and buy from a seller with a practical return policy when your required game has not been tested on the exact system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add a dedicated graphics card later to an AI PC?

A desktop may accept a later graphics-card upgrade if its motherboard slot, case clearance, and power supply support it. Most laptops cannot be upgraded in that way, so treat the integrated GPU as the long-term graphics hardware unless the model explicitly provides an upgradeable graphics module or a supported external-GPU connection.

Does more system RAM always make integrated graphics faster?

More capacity prevents memory pressure, but capacity alone does not guarantee higher frame rates. Integrated graphics share system memory, so memory bandwidth and the manufacturer’s configuration can matter; compare systems using the same memory conditions when possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an AI PC run games while disconnected from the charger?

Usually yes, but portable computers often enforce lower battery power limits, which can reduce sustained performance. Battery results should be evaluated as a separate use case from plugged-in benchmarks and may also shorten play time because gaming is power intensive.

How do I know whether a game supports Automatic Super Resolution?

Check Microsoft’s current Automatic Super Resolution compatibility documentation and the game’s entry, then confirm your device meets the listed Windows, display, driver, architecture, and graphics-API requirements. Support is curated and can change, so do not infer compatibility from the game’s age or from the presence of an NPU alone.
