A wake word by itself does not show that calling is enabled. For example, Gemini on Android can place calls through the Phone app when the required integration and Google app Phone permission are available; a separate setting controls whether calls can be made while the phone is locked. Alexa calling has its own setup and regional limits. Check the specific assistant and device rather than assuming one rule applies to all of them.
Does an AI assistant need permission to place a call?
For the documented calling features covered here, the assistant needs a supported way to place calls and relevant app or device access. That does not mean every call always requires a fresh confirmation, nor does it establish a universal rule for every assistant, operating system, app, carrier, or jurisdiction.
It also helps to separate four questions: did the assistant activate, was interaction history saved, can it use contacts or call logs to identify someone, and does it have calling access? These are different controls. Turning off activity history, for example, is not the same as revoking Phone permission.
Gemini on Android: what enables calls?
Google says the Gemini mobile app on Android can use the device’s Phone app to call contacts, businesses, and phone numbers. Its documented requirements include an Android phone or tablet, an active phone plan, the Gemini app, saved contact information from signed-in devices, and Phone permission for the Google app. The Phone app integration is not available in Gemini in Google Messages or the Gemini web app. Google says not to use it for emergency calls; use the device calling app directly for emergency services. Phone permission and integration
Google says the Phone app integration is designed to work automatically with the Gemini mobile app, but users can disconnect it in Connected Apps settings. The Google app must have Phone permission for the calling route to work. On Android, you can allow or deny that permission in the Google app’s app permissions. Menu wording and steps can vary by device and Android version.
Call Logs permission may help Gemini connect the right person. Contacts permission may enable calls to device contacts that are not synced to the Google Account. These permissions support identity matching or contact access; they are not the same control as Phone permission. Google also notes that Android users can change the default phone app in system settings.

Calls while the phone is locked
Gemini has a separate lock-screen control. In Gemini settings, switch Allow calls and messages without unlocking on or off. This setting governs whether calls and messages can be handled while locked; it is distinct from the calling integration and Phone permission.
How to prevent Gemini from using this calling route
- Deny Phone permission: Open Android Settings, find the Google app, open its app permissions, and deny Phone. Exact menu names vary by device and Android version.
- Disconnect the integration: In the Gemini mobile app, open Settings, then Connected Apps, and disconnect the Phone app integration if available. Google’s Gemini help page documents this control.
- Disable calls while locked: In Gemini settings, turn off Allow calls and messages without unlocking if you do not want this access from the lock screen.
These steps address Gemini’s documented Phone app calling route; they do not establish that every other app or calling integration on a device is disabled.

Does accidental activation mean a call was made?
No. Google says Assistant is designed to wait in standby until it detects activation. It may activate by mistake if a sound resembles the wake phrase or through accidental manual activation, and a device may show activation with an on-screen indicator or flashing LEDs. That describes activation, not whether a phone call occurred. A mistaken wake-word detection alone is not evidence that the calling integration was enabled or used. Contacts, activity history, and audio are separate privacy controls
Google Assistant sharing settings include Web & App Activity, app information, contact information from devices, and voice and audio activity. Google says Assistant can still perform some tasks when settings are off, but personalization may be reduced. Without contact information, it may not recognize the person requested for a call.

When Web & App Activity is enabled, Assistant interactions may appear in My Activity, where users can review and delete saved interactions. Google says that if Web & App Activity is disabled, an unintended activation will not be stored there. Voice Match is available on some devices and can recognize a user’s voice and gate personal results when those are enabled. These history and personalization choices do not replace the calling permission controls. More detail is in Google’s Assistant sharing settings and privacy overview.

Amazon’s Alexa-to-Phone feature lets each household profile select up to 10 mobile or landline numbers. Amazon documents outbound calls to most mobile and landline numbers in the U.S., UK, Canada, and Mexico, and lists unsupported number categories. This scope applies to Alexa-to-Phone as described by Amazon, not necessarily to every Alexa device, calling feature, or region. Check Amazon’s Alexa-to-Phone details for current limits.
What to check for an assistant not covered here
Settings and permissions differ by product. For an unfamiliar assistant, consult its current calling and permissions documentation, then check the phone’s app permissions and lock-screen access. Look separately for calling access, contact or call-log access, integrations that can be disconnected, and any setting that permits actions while locked. The sources cited here do not establish behavior for every assistant or a general legal rule.
OpenAI phone support is a separate case
