No—not across mathematical research. Modern reasoning systems can solve very difficult, tightly specified problems and can produce machine-checked proofs in systems such as Lean. In competition settings they have reached or approached elite human performance: AlphaProof with AlphaGeometry 2 solved four of six 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) problems for 28 of 42 points, while Google reported that Gemini Deep Think solved five of six 2025 IMO problems for 35 points. Those results demonstrate powerful proof search, not an autonomous mathematician. The systems still rely on human-selected problems, formalization, libraries, extensive computation and external judgment about whether a result is important. They can accelerate parts of a mathematician’s workflow, but people remain responsible for choosing questions, inventing useful concepts, interpreting results and establishing significance.

Can AI replace a mathematician today?

AI can replace some individual tasks—such as exploring cases, suggesting lemmas, searching a formal library or checking a completed derivation—but it cannot reliably replace the full role of a research mathematician. The strongest public demonstrations are bounded benchmarks with clearly stated goals. Research begins earlier and ends later: someone must decide which problem is worth pursuing, choose definitions that expose structure, recognize a productive dead end and explain why a theorem matters.

The 2024 IMO result illustrates both the progress and the limits. AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 solved four of six problems and earned 28 of 42 points, a silver-medal-equivalent score. AlphaProof handled three non-geometry problems; AlphaGeometry 2 solved the geometry problem. For the hardest items, the systems used two to three days of computation, and experts had to formalize the contest statements for the prover.

Google later reported that Gemini Deep Think solved five of six 2025 IMO problems for 35 points, at gold-medal standard, directly in natural language within the 4.5-hour contest limit. That is a substantial capability result, but it is an official company report about a competition benchmark—not evidence that the system can independently conduct open-ended mathematical research.

What does it mean for an AI to prove a theorem?

A proof can be persuasive to a reader without being mechanically verified. A formal proof is a program-like object written in a precise language whose rules a proof assistant checks line by line. Lean, for example, rejects a proof term that does not follow from the definitions, axioms and previously established lemmas in its environment.

Natural-language reasoning

A language model may write a fluent argument with the right overall idea while inserting an invalid algebraic step, overlooking a boundary case or using a theorem outside its hypotheses. Google DeepMind has warned that natural-language approaches can “hallucinate plausible but incorrect intermediate reasoning steps and solutions.” Coherence is therefore not a correctness certificate.

Machine-checked reasoning

When a statement and its proof are encoded in Lean or another supported formal system, the checker can mechanically verify whether the proof satisfies the encoded rules. This changes the question from “Does the explanation sound right?” to “Does this formal object type-check in this specified environment?” Formal verification does not guarantee that the statement captures the intended real-world idea, that the definitions are useful, or that the theorem is important; it certifies the derivation relative to the formalization.

The distinction is central to evaluating AI claims. An AI-generated explanation may be useful as a conjecture or sketch. A proof accepted by a checker is stronger evidence about logical validity, but it may have required substantial human translation and a carefully prepared library.

How do current reasoning systems find proofs?

AlphaProof and Lean proof search

AlphaProof used reinforcement learning to search for proofs expressed in Lean. The system learns which proof steps are promising, proposes candidate sequences and receives feedback from the formal checker. Successful searches can discover rigorous derivations without a human supplying every intermediate step, provided the problem has been encoded in the language and the relevant mathematical infrastructure is available.

For the 2024 IMO pipeline, experts first translated the contest problems into formal statements. That translation is not clerical: notation, definitions, hidden assumptions and the exact theorem to be proved all have to be made explicit. A solver can only search the problem that was encoded, not the informal intention behind a poorly chosen formalization.

AlphaGeometry 2 and symbolic deduction

AlphaGeometry 2 combines a neural model that proposes useful constructions with a symbolic engine that carries out deductions in Euclidean geometry. In a separate evaluation reported in Nature in 2024, it solved 25 of 30 olympiad-level geometry problems. Its strength comes from restricting the search to a structured domain where geometric objects and inference rules can be represented explicitly.

Natural-language reasoning models

Models such as Gemini Deep Think work directly with the written problem and produce a written solution. This removes the immediate requirement that a human encode every statement in a proof assistant, and it helped produce the reported 2025 IMO performance within the contest time limit. It also leaves more room for an undetected false step, because a fluent text answer is not automatically checked by a formal kernel.

What can AI prove reliably right now?

The evidence is strongest when the task has a fixed statement, a suitable formal language, and an objective checker or grading procedure. Results across different benchmarks should not be treated as interchangeable.

Evidence Result What it demonstrates Important qualification
2024 IMO, AlphaProof plus AlphaGeometry 2 4 of 6 problems; 28 of 42 points High-level solving in number theory, combinatorics and geometry under a competition-style specification Silver-medal-equivalent performance; expert formalization was required and the hardest searches took two to three days
2024 IMO non-geometry problems AlphaProof solved 3 of 5 Formal proof search beyond geometry Reported by Hubert and co-authors in Nature in 2025; dependent on the Lean encodings and available search resources
Olympiad geometry evaluation, 2024 25 of 30 problems Strong performance in a specialized geometry domain Does not measure algebra, analysis, probability or research problem selection
2025 IMO, Gemini Deep Think 5 of 6 problems; 35 points Gold-medal-standard natural-language problem solving within the 4.5-hour contest limit Google’s official report; it is a benchmark result rather than independent evidence of general research autonomy
TPTP version 9.0.0, 2025 89% solved by fully automatic systems Broad automated theorem-proving coverage on a standardized problem library These are selected formal problems, not a sample of the questions mathematicians choose in practice
IMO-ProofBench grading, 2026 Pearson correlation 0.96 on basic and 0.93 on advanced proof grading Models can often estimate proof quality in a benchmark setting Correlation with benchmark labels is not the same as proving new theorems or guaranteeing every answer

Together, these figures show that AI can find proofs in bounded domains and can perform impressively on difficult contest material. They do not establish that one system can move freely among all areas of mathematics, formulate worthwhile conjectures or sustain a multi-year research program.

Why is formalization such a major bottleneck?

Translating human mathematics into a formal language

Human papers routinely omit routine details, reuse notation flexibly and rely on shared intuition. A proof assistant requires every object, type, assumption and inference to be made explicit. The translation can take longer than the original argument, especially when a theorem uses definitions that are not already in a library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Nature work on AlphaGeometry describes high costs in translating human proofs into machine-verifiable form, with geometry posing particular difficulties. In the 2024 IMO effort, expert mathematicians performed this formalization. Consequently, the headline score measures a combined human-and-machine pipeline, not an unsupervised system starting from an unprocessed problem statement.

Libraries and representation choices

A prover benefits from existing lemmas, tactics and definitions. If a useful theorem has not been formalized, the system may need to rebuild it. Two teams can obtain different results from the same underlying model by choosing different representations, search tactics or library versions. A successful proof also depends on whether the formal statement expresses the intended mathematics rather than an accidental special case.

Search cost and compute

Formal checking makes each accepted proof trustworthy relative to the system, but finding that proof can be expensive. The hardest 2024 IMO searches reportedly required two to three days of computation, far longer than a human contest session. A result that is mathematically valid but economically impractical may still be valuable for verification, yet it is not equivalent to an efficient research collaborator.

Are AI-generated mathematical proofs reliable?

Reliability depends on what was checked and by whom. Treat an unverified natural-language solution as a conjectural explanation until each nontrivial step has been independently checked. Treat a Lean proof that compiles as logically sound within its declared environment, while still checking that the formal statement matches the intended theorem.

  • Identify the artifact: Is it a prose argument, a symbolic derivation, executable code, or a proof accepted by a specified proof assistant and library version?
  • Inspect assumptions: Confirm domains, nonzero conditions, continuity or differentiability requirements, finiteness assumptions and edge cases.
  • Check the formal statement: A checker can validate a theorem that is weaker, narrower or differently scoped than the question a human thought was being answered.
  • Reproduce the environment: Record the Lean version, imported libraries and build settings so another mathematician can rerun the check.
  • Separate discovery from exposition: An AI sketch may reveal a useful route even when its written justification contains gaps; repair the argument before citing it as a proof.

The Nature AlphaProof paper describes verification without reference solutions as an active research challenge. That matters because a system can generate a candidate proof without an obvious answer key, but establishing that the candidate captures the intended reasoning, uses no unintended loophole and generalizes as claimed still requires careful validation.

How do AI systems compare with mathematicians?

A fair comparison needs more than a contest score. Four dimensions separate a strong proof engine from a research mathematician.

Dimension Current AI strength Human advantage or responsibility
Formal correctness Proof assistants can mechanically reject invalid proof objects; search systems can produce rigorous proofs in supported domains. People choose the formalization, audit assumptions and decide whether the encoded theorem answers the intended question.
Breadth Systems can be excellent on selected olympiad, geometry, automated-theorem and formal-language benchmarks. Mathematicians move among fields, import analogies and create tools when no library or representation exists.
Discovery and problem selection Models can suggest conjectures, examples, lemmas and proof paths from supplied material. Humans decide which questions are valuable, invent definitions, recognize unexpected structure and set a research agenda.
Resource efficiency Once infrastructure exists, automated search can explore many candidates consistently and at scale. People currently supply expensive formalization, debugging, interpretation and compute-management decisions; a multi-day search may be unsuitable for interactive work.

This comparison explains why “can it solve a hard theorem?” is too narrow a test for replacement. A research mathematician is not merely a theorem-proving endpoint. The role includes selecting goals under uncertainty, communicating with collaborators, teaching, judging significance and connecting a result to a broader body of knowledge.

What work can mathematicians delegate to AI now?

The most defensible use is as a supervised proof-search and conjecture-support tool. A mathematician can ask a model to generate examples, test small cases, suggest a decomposition, search a formal library or translate a hand proof into Lean. Each output should be treated as a candidate that receives human review or machine checking.

Exploration before proof

Models can enumerate examples and counterexamples, vary parameters and propose patterns worth investigating. This can shorten the time between an initial idea and a precise conjecture, but experiments do not establish a universal claim; a single overlooked case can invalidate an attractive pattern.

Formalization assistance

AI can draft definitions, theorem statements and boilerplate proof code. Human experts remain needed to select abstractions, resolve type or notation issues and ensure that the formal theorem is neither accidentally trivial nor stronger than intended.

Proof auditing

A model can look for missing cases or explain a long derivation in plain language. The safest workflow pairs that review with a proof assistant or independent manual verification. A second fluent model is not, by itself, an independent correctness guarantee.

Communication

After a result is established, AI can help produce alternate explanations for students or collaborators. The author should preserve the exact hypotheses, cite the formal artifact and distinguish established lemmas from intuition or speculation.

What remains outside reliable AI replacement?

Current demonstrations do not show autonomous selection of important questions, creation of broadly useful definitions, sustained collaboration or judgment about significance. Those tasks are difficult to benchmark because there is no single correct target and because value often becomes apparent only after a field responds to the work.

Even a correct theorem may be uninteresting, already known, too specialized or disconnected from the problem that motivated it. Conversely, a conjecture that initially looks unpromising can open a new area. Deciding between those possibilities involves taste, context and social knowledge that are not captured by a proof checker or a point total.

There is also a difference between proving a formal statement and understanding its role. A mathematician may want a proof that reveals why a phenomenon occurs, generalizes cleanly or suggests the next theorem. An automated derivation can be valid yet opaque, brittle or unhelpful for discovery.

How should you evaluate the next claim that an AI “proved” mathematics?

  1. Ask what was actually submitted. Was the input a formal statement or an informal prompt? Was the output checked by Lean or another kernel?
  2. Check the scope. Identify the domain, benchmark selection, time limit, hardware and whether humans prepared translations or hints.
  3. Separate solving from judging. A high score shows success on selected tasks; it does not measure choosing research questions or explaining significance.
  4. Look for independent verification. Company-reported results can be important while still requiring clear labeling until outside groups reproduce them.
  5. Evaluate efficiency. Include expert setup, library construction, debugging and inference time, not only the final proof-checking step.
  6. Read the theorem itself. Confirm that definitions, quantifiers and assumptions match the mathematical claim being advertised.

Using these criteria prevents two opposite mistakes: dismissing genuine advances because they are specialized, or treating a spectacular benchmark as evidence that the entire profession has been automated.

What is the most realistic future?

The near-term model is augmentation. Reasoning systems will increasingly search formal spaces, propose intermediate lemmas, find counterexamples and translate between informal mathematics and proof assistants. Mathematicians who can specify precise goals, inspect machine-generated arguments and maintain formal libraries are likely to gain leverage, while the systems become valuable collaborators rather than independent owners of a research agenda.

Replacement would require reliable performance across unfamiliar domains, low-cost translation from informal ideas, efficient long-horizon search, robust handling of ambiguity and a demonstrated ability to choose consequential questions. The current evidence establishes important pieces of proof automation, but not that complete package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a proof assistant understand an informal theorem written in ordinary language?

Not by itself. The statement must be translated into the assistant’s formal language, with definitions, types and assumptions made explicit; an AI translator can help, but a human must verify that the encoding preserves the intended meaning.

Why can a formally verified theorem still be scientifically unhelpful?

The checker validates only the encoded statement and derivation. The theorem may use an unhelpful definition, omit a condition that matters in applications, or be too narrow to explain the phenomenon that motivated the work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do higher benchmark scores mean AI is getting better at mathematical creativity?

They show improved performance on the tasks and scoring rules used in those benchmarks. Creativity in research also includes finding worthwhile questions, inventing concepts and recognizing significance, which contest and theorem-proving scores do not measure.

Should students use AI to write their mathematics proofs?

They can use it to generate examples, explanations or possible approaches, but they should reproduce every argument themselves and follow their institution’s rules. A fluent answer can hide a false step, so submitting unchecked text undermines both learning and assessment.
