AI image detectors can be useful clues, but a detector score alone cannot prove where an image came from. Tests and scientific reviews document false positives, missed AI images, and sharp performance changes when the scene, generator, prompt, editing history, or image quality changes. Watermarks can also be removed or spoofed, while provenance credentials can disappear during reposting. Use a detector result to decide what to investigate next, not as a final verdict—especially when a person’s reputation, a news report, a grade, or a legal decision is at stake.
What does an AI image detector actually tell you?
Most detectors produce a classification or likelihood estimate from one of three signals: pixel patterns associated with generated images, a model-specific watermark, or verifiable provenance metadata. The output answers a narrow question such as “Does this file resemble the examples in my test set?” It does not automatically answer “Who made it, with which tool, or whether every part of it is synthetic.”
The International Scientific Report on the Safety of Advanced AI: interim report (updated 22 October 2025) describes specialized classifiers and likelihood-based methods as limited and prone to false positives. It explains that general-purpose AI systems may memorize training examples, so familiar material can confuse a classifier. The report states: “However, existing methods are limited and are prone to false positives because general-purpose AI (artificial intelligence) systems tend to memorise examples that appear in their training data, so common text snippets or images of famous objects may be falsely identified as being AI (artificial intelligence)-generated.”

Why do detectors produce false positives?
False positives occur when an authentic photograph or illustration shares the visual characteristics a detector associates with generated content. Several mechanisms can produce that mismatch.
Memorized or highly familiar imagery
The 2025 government report identifies memorized training examples as one cause. Famous objects and widely reproduced images can contain patterns that overlap with material a model learned, leading a classifier to label a real file as generated. A detector may therefore be reacting to familiarity in its training data rather than discovering an artificial origin for the file being checked.
Semantic shortcuts
Detectors sometimes learn shortcuts tied to a scene rather than the true source. The NeurIPS 2024 paper “Breaking Semantic Artifacts for Generalized AI-generated Image Detection” found substantial accuracy drops when scenes changed. Its authors link failures partly to overfitting on semantic artifacts that appear in both real and generated images. A system that performs well on portraits, for example, may behave differently on a forest, a street, or a scanned document.

Camera, compression, and editing artifacts
Noise reduction, sharpening, resizing, social-media recompression, and other ordinary processing can alter the pixel statistics a classifier uses. A genuine image that has been heavily edited may look less like the detector’s “real” examples, while a lightly edited generated image may look more ordinary. Unless a benchmark states which operations were tested, its score does not tell you how the service behaves after a file has been cropped, exported, or reposted.
Content characteristics and prompts
A 2025 Proceedings of Machine Learning Research study found that prompt length, saturation, contrast, and texture richness affected detector accuracy in its evaluated settings. It also observed that higher human-preference quality scores tended to coincide with easier detection. That counterintuitive result is specific to the study’s images and systems; visual polish alone does not determine whether a different detector will succeed.

Can a detector miss an AI-generated image?
Yes. A false negative occurs when generated content is classified as real or left uncertain. Realistic outputs, post-processing, unfamiliar generators, and mixed-origin files can all reduce the signal a detector expects. The government report warns that increasingly realistic generated content may become harder to detect.
Generalization is a central problem. The NeurIPS evaluation covered 31 test sets—seven GANs, 18 diffusion-model variants, and six CNN-based generative models—and still found large cross-scene performance losses. The paper’s proposed method improved average cross-scene accuracy by 2.08 percentage points and average open-world accuracy by 10.59 percentage points over earlier methods in that evaluation. Those are paper-specific comparisons, not a universal accuracy rate for detectors.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Generation and editing can also be mixed. An image may start as a camera photograph and receive an AI inpainting operation, or an entirely generated image may be composited with a real logo. A benchmark that tests only completely synthetic images will not establish how its detector handles those cases.
What does a published accuracy number really mean?
Read every accuracy figure with its system, dataset, date, and task definition. NIST’s 2025 GenAI pilot evaluation plan defines an “Image Discriminator” task as deciding whether a target image was generated by a generative AI system. The plan assumes completely AI-generated content and excludes non-semantic enhancements such as resizing, contrast, or sharpness. A score from that task should not be presented as a score for partially edited or mixed-origin images.
Vendor results require the same caution. In a 7 May 2024 post, OpenAI reported an internal early-version classifier that correctly identified about 98% of DALL·E 3 images, incorrectly tagged fewer than about 0.5% of non-AI images as DALL·E 3, and flagged about 5–10% of images from other AI models. These were historical, vendor-reported results aimed at DALL·E 3 in an internal dataset. They are not independent validation, current performance, or evidence that detectors as a category achieve those rates.

| Question to ask | Why it changes the meaning of a score |
|---|---|
| Which generators and real-image sources were included? | A detector can recognize familiar generators yet fail on an unseen model or authentic images unlike its test set. |
| What counted as “generated”? | Fully synthetic examples do not represent photographs with AI retouching, composites, or ordinary edits. |
| Are false positives and false negatives both reported? | Overall accuracy can hide a serious error rate for the class you care about. |
| Was the test cross-scene and open-world? | Performance on familiar scenes or models may not transfer to new subjects and tools. |
| Were recompression, cropping, resizing, or attacks tested? | File handling can remove or add the patterns a detector relies on. |
| Who ran the evaluation and when? | Independent, recent testing is more informative than an undated marketing claim. |
Are watermarks more trustworthy than classifiers?
Watermarking inserts or associates a signal that a detector can search for. A valid signal can be useful evidence that a particular tool or service marked a file, but it is not proof of the complete creation history. The government report says watermarks can make generated content easier to distinguish while noting that they can be removed.

In the studied settings, low-perturbation watermarking faced a trade-off between evasion and spoofing errors under diffusion purification. The paper also analyzed model-substitution attacks against other watermark approaches and showed that a black-box watermarking method could be exploited to create a watermarked noise image that caused real images to be falsely flagged. These findings apply to the methods and attack settings tested; they do not show that every watermark is vulnerable to every attack.
Interpret a detected watermark narrowly: it supports the claim that the signal is present. It does not, by itself, establish which person generated the image, whether the image was later altered, or whether the watermarking system’s key and implementation were secure.
How do provenance credentials differ from detector scores?
Provenance credentials record information about an asset’s origin and edits instead of inferring origin only from pixels. OpenAI described work in 2024 to include C2PA metadata in product features and preserve credential information about edits to DALL·E 3 images. This approach can provide a history that a classifier cannot see.
Credentials are useful only if the chain survives. Platforms, creators, and intermediaries must retain metadata for a viewer to inspect it; downloading, screenshotting, or re-exporting can strip it. Missing credentials therefore do not prove that an image is authentic or synthetic. A preserved, cryptographically verifiable record is stronger evidence about documented steps, but it still describes what was recorded rather than every event that occurred outside that record.

How good are people at spotting generated images?
Human inspection is not a dependable replacement for software. Microsoft Research reported approximately 287,000 image evaluations by more than 12,500 participants in a June 2025 experiment. Participants achieved a 62% overall success rate, did better with portraits, and struggled more with natural and urban landscapes. That result describes the experiment’s people and images, not a universal human baseline or an automated-detector benchmark.
Visual clues such as malformed text, implausible reflections, inconsistent shadows, or anatomically unusual details can justify closer inspection. Their absence is not proof of authenticity, particularly after an image has been resized or compressed.
How should you investigate a suspicious image?
Use a detector as a triage tool, then build an evidence trail that does not depend on one score.
- Preserve the original. Save the file as received, record its filename and hash if the matter is consequential, and avoid judging only a screenshot or recompressed copy.
- Record the detector context. Note the service, version if shown, date, result, confidence wording, and whether it claims to detect pixels, a watermark, or provenance credentials.
- Check the task fit. Ask whether the system was evaluated on the same scene type, generator family, language in any visible text, and editing operations present in your file.
- Inspect provenance. Look for C2PA or other signed credentials and read the recorded creation and edit events. Treat an absent record as unknown, not as a verdict.
- Seek the earliest credible source. Compare publication times, surrounding reporting, and statements from the alleged creator. A detector cannot establish who possessed the file first.
- Use independent checks. If the stakes justify it, run a second method with a different evidence type and ask an expert to examine the original file. Agreement between tools is still not proof if both rely on similar training data.
- State uncertainty precisely. Report what the detector said, what it was designed to recognize, and what remains unverified. Do not convert “likely generated” into a factual claim about a person.
When is relying on one detector especially risky?
The risk is highest when an error can cause irreversible harm: accusing someone of fraud, rejecting a student’s work, moderating a news image, or making a legal or employment decision. In those settings, require corroboration and a review path. A detector can prioritize files for human examination, but it should not be the sole trigger for punishment or publication.
For low-stakes curiosity, a single result may be a reasonable prompt to investigate further. Even then, preserve the distinction between “this tool found a pattern” and “this image was made by AI.”

How can you compare two detector services fairly?
Compare evidence, not just a headline percentage. Use the following checklist:
- Scope: generators, real-image sources, scenes, languages, and editing operations.
- Error reporting: false-positive and false-negative rates on a named test set.
- Generalization: unseen generators, scenes, and datasets rather than only familiar examples.
- Robustness: recompression, resizing, cropping, ordinary edits, and adversarial testing.
- Evidence type: pixel classification, model-specific watermark detection, or credential verification.
- Recency and independence: evaluation date, version, and whether an independent group reproduced the result.
If a provider does not disclose these details, treat the number as an unqualified claim rather than a transferable measure of reliability.
What is the practical verdict on AI image detectors?
Detectors are best used as investigative signals. Their errors vary with scenes, generators, prompts, image characteristics, file handling, and the definition of “AI-generated.” Watermarks and provenance credentials add different kinds of evidence, but each has its own failure modes. For consequential decisions, combine the detector output with the original file, contextual reporting, and whatever verifiable provenance survives—and document what cannot be established.

Can deleting metadata make an AI image look real to a detector?
Deleting metadata mainly removes provenance information; it does not reliably change the pixel patterns a classifier examines. Conversely, retaining metadata does not guarantee that the image itself is unaltered, so the file and its recorded history should be assessed separately.
Should a school or newsroom ban AI detectors?
A blanket ban is unnecessary, but a detector should not be the sole basis for discipline or publication decisions. Set a written process that permits the subject to provide original files, drafts, timestamps, and other evidence, with a human review of uncertainty.
Why can two detectors give opposite results for the same image?
They may have been trained on different generators and scenes, use different thresholds, or look for different evidence such as pixels versus a watermark. Opposite outputs indicate disagreement between systems, not that one result automatically proves the image’s origin.
Does a high-quality AI image evade detection?
Not consistently. One 2025 study found higher human-preference quality scores tended to coincide with easier detection in its tested settings, while other factors such as contrast, saturation, texture, and prompt length also affected results. That finding should not be generalized to every model or detector.
