Yes, but mostly indirectly. Artificial intelligence runs directly on electricity, not crude oil. As AI adoption expands, data centres consume more power; utilities then add generation, while construction, transport, backup systems, equipment manufacturing and broader economic growth create secondary demand for oil products. Natural gas, renewables and nuclear power are more immediate sources of the additional electricity than oil.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has not published a standalone number for oil demand caused by AI. The defensible conclusion is therefore about pathways and conditions: AI can raise oil demand at the margin, yet the size and even the net direction depend on regional power mixes, efficiency gains, rebound spending and how quickly AI applications reduce fuel use elsewhere.
What is the energy chain from an AI query to fossil-fuel demand?
An AI request passes through several energy-conversion steps. Oil appears only in some downstream links, while electricity is the direct input at the computing stage.

Training a model and serving an answer (inference) require processors, memory, networking and cooling in data centres. The IEA’s 2025 report, Energy and AI, captures the dependency as: “There is no AI without energy; at the same time, AI has the potential to transform the energy sector.”
- Computing work becomes electricity demand. Servers draw power continuously, and cooling and backup equipment add to the load. A short text prompt is a small increment; model training, video generation and agentic workflows can run far more hardware for longer.
- Electricity is supplied by a local mix. A grid may use renewables, gas, nuclear, coal or other sources. New data-centre demand can be met by existing spare capacity, new generation, imports or on-site plants, so the marginal fuel differs by location and time.
- Build-out creates supply-chain demand. New campuses require steel, cement, copper, transformers, trucks, construction machinery, chips and cooling systems. Petroleum products can be used in transport, manufacturing and petrochemical feedstocks even when the facility itself buys only electricity.
- Economic effects feed back into energy use. If AI raises productivity and incomes, people and businesses may buy more goods and services, increasing transport and industrial fuel use. Efficiency improvements can push in the opposite direction.
This chain is why “AI uses electricity” and “AI can increase oil demand” are compatible statements, but they describe different points in the system.

How much electricity do data centres use now, and how fast could that grow?
Data centres used about 415 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity worldwide in 2024, equal to 1.5% of global electricity consumption, according to the IEA’s 2025 analysis. The United States represented 45% of that use, China 25% and Europe 15%. Global data-centre electricity consumption grew about 12% a year from 2017 through 2024.
| Measure | IEA figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Global data-centre electricity, 2024 | 415 TWh | Actual-year estimate in the IEA’s 2025 Energy and AI analysis |
| Share of global electricity, 2024 | 1.5% | Data centres’ worldwide share, not AI alone |
| Base-case data-centre electricity, 2030 | 945 TWh | IEA 2025 projection |
| Base-case data-centre electricity, 2035 | 1,200 TWh | IEA 2025 projection |
| Updated 2025–2030 projection | 485–950 TWh | Range in the IEA’s 2026 update; the endpoints represent different assumptions |
| Global data-centre electricity growth in 2025 | 17% | IEA 2026 estimate |
| AI-focused data-centre electricity growth in 2025 | 50% | IEA 2026 estimate for facilities focused on AI workloads |
These totals cover data centres, not a separately metered “AI” category. AI is the fastest-growing workload in the latest update, but conventional cloud storage, websites, enterprise software and other services continue to consume power too.
Which fuels supply the new electricity?
The IEA’s 2025 outlook expects renewables to provide the largest addition for data-centre demand through 2035. Natural gas and nuclear are also important; oil is not identified as the principal source of data-centre electricity.

|---|---|---|
| Renewables | More than 450 TWh | Largest projected contribution in the IEA 2025 outlook |
| Natural gas | 175 TWh | Significant source where firm, dispatchable power is needed |
| Nuclear | About 175 TWh | Roughly comparable to gas in the same outlook |
A grid’s average fuel mix is not the same as the fuel serving the next megawatt. A data centre that signs a renewable-power contract may still draw from a grid that uses gas at night or during low-wind periods. Conversely, a region with spare nuclear or hydroelectric capacity may add little fossil generation for the same computing load.
Could on-site gas generation make oil demand rise?
In grid-constrained areas, developers may install generators at the campus rather than wait for transmission upgrades. The IEA’s 2026 update estimates that 15–27 gigawatts (GW) of on-site natural-gas capacity could serve US data centres by 2030.

Reliable on-site systems must cover peaks, maintenance and outages. The IEA estimates that this arrangement can require 30%–70% more capacity than the critical and variable load itself. That overbuild concerns generating capacity, not an equivalent increase in fuel consumption, but it illustrates why gas infrastructure can expand quickly around large campuses.
Gas-fired turbines or engines burn natural gas directly. They do not turn the facility into an oil-fired plant. Oil demand can still arise from diesel or other liquid fuels used for emergency generators, fuel deliveries, construction fleets and lubricant and petrochemical supply chains. Those are separate, usually smaller pathways that depend on local rules and operating practice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere exactly does oil enter the AI economy?
Oil’s connection is best understood as several indirect channels rather than one pipeline from a prompt to a barrel.
Backup and resilience equipment
Data centres commonly require standby generators and stored fuel so servers can keep running during grid failures. Whether the fuel is diesel or another liquid product, consumption depends on testing, outage duration, emissions regulations and how much battery or alternative generation is installed. A generator that never runs still creates demand for tanks, maintenance and fuel logistics, but not the same operational consumption as a heavily outage-prone site.
Construction and expansion
Excavators, cranes, concrete trucks and long-haul vehicles often use petroleum-based fuels. Rapid campus construction therefore increases oil-product use during the build phase. Steel, insulation, plastics, cooling fluids, cabling and electronic components also rely on petrochemical materials, although the oil content of any one product is difficult to isolate.

Transport and equipment supply chains
Chips, servers, transformers and cooling equipment move through global supply chains. Air freight, ships, rail and trucks can add fuel demand as orders accelerate. The effect is strongest during concentrated build-outs and may ease once construction and equipment replacement settle into a normal cycle.
Macroeconomic rebound
AI could raise output and household income, leading to additional travel, manufacturing and consumption. In its 2026 update, the IEA estimates that an AI-driven GDP boost could lift global energy demand in 2035 by 1%–4% compared with a no-AI-growth trend. That is a scenario range for total energy, not an oil-only estimate and not a quantity attributable solely to data-centre electricity.
Does AI need natural gas or oil?
AI needs reliable electricity; it does not require a particular fuel. Natural gas can be a practical marginal source where transmission is tight because gas plants can be dispatched when renewable output is low. Oil is generally a backup or supply-chain fuel rather than the normal source of grid electricity for a data centre.
Three questions prevent misleading comparisons:
- Where is the facility? A US site facing a multi-year grid-connection queue may use on-site gas, while a site in a hydro-rich region may add little gas or oil capacity.
- What time period is being measured? Construction and generator-fuel effects occur quickly; power-plant and transmission changes unfold over years; economy-wide rebound effects may take longer.
- What boundary is counted? Operational electricity, upstream fuel production, equipment manufacturing and induced economic activity are different accounting scopes. Combining them without labels exaggerates precision.
Could AI efficiency reduce energy and oil demand?
Yes. The IEA reports that energy use per AI task has fallen by at least an order of magnitude annually in recent years. A simple text query can use less electricity than running a television for the same period, while video generation, intensive reasoning and agentic tasks can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query.
Lower energy per task does not guarantee lower totals. If the cost and latency of an AI task fall, users may run many more tasks, use larger models or add video and autonomous features. This rebound can overwhelm per-task savings, just as more efficient vehicles can encourage additional driving.

AI can also reduce fuel use outside computing. The IEA identifies applications including industrial optimisation, renewable-power forecasting, grid-fault detection, transmission management, oil-and-gas maintenance, leak detection and methane reduction. These gains could lower electricity, gas or oil consumption, but their net effect depends on whether the systems are deployed, whether they change operating decisions and whether saved money is spent on other energy-consuming activity.
How should you evaluate a claim that AI will increase oil demand?
Use the following checklist before accepting a headline or forecast:
- Separate direct from indirect oil use. Ask whether the claim counts generator fuel, construction and transport, petrochemical inputs, or only refinery and vehicle demand.
- Check the energy unit. TWh measures electricity; tonnes or barrels measure fuels; primary-energy totals include conversion losses. They cannot be compared without a stated conversion.
- Identify the marginal grid fuel. A national average mix may hide the gas plant, hydro reservoir or nuclear unit that actually serves new load.
- Mark the date and scenario. The IEA’s 2025 base case and 2026 update use different assumptions. A 2024 baseline, a 2030 build-out and a 2035 economic scenario answer different questions.
- Test workload assumptions. Text, image, video, reasoning and agentic tasks have very different energy intensity. A forecast based only on query counts can miss capability changes.
- Include bottlenecks. Chips, transformers, turbines, transmission connections, permits and financing can delay projects. Planned AI capacity is not the same as electricity actually consumed.
- Account for efficiency and rebound together. Falling energy per task and rising task volume can occur at the same time.
What could make the oil effect larger or smaller?
The oil effect is more likely to be noticeable when several conditions coincide: data centres are built in regions with constrained grids; on-site generators run frequently; construction and equipment transport are unusually rapid; and AI-driven income growth expands travel and goods demand faster than efficiency improves.
It is likely to be smaller when new computing is supplied by existing low-carbon capacity, transmission and storage are added efficiently, backup systems run rarely, hardware supply chains become less fuel-intensive and AI optimisation cuts fuel use in transport, industry and energy operations. Neither outcome follows from AI adoption alone.

AI growth can increase oil demand, but the increase is a secondary spillover rather than the direct energy requirement of computation. Electricity demand is the measurable first step; the local generation mix determines whether that demand adds gas, renewables, nuclear or another source. Oil enters through backup liquids, construction, logistics, petrochemicals and any broader economic rebound, while AI-enabled efficiency can offset part of those effects.

Because the IEA has not calculated a single AI-caused oil-demand total, precise barrel figures presented without a transparent boundary and scenario should be treated cautiously. The useful question is not “Does AI run on oil?” but “Which new loads, fuels, supply chains and efficiency changes occur in this region over this time horizon?”
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a renewable-power contract mean an AI data centre has no fossil-fuel impact?
Not necessarily. Contracts usually describe purchased electricity or matching certificates, while construction, backup fuel, equipment manufacturing and grid balancing can still involve fossil fuels. Ask whether the claim uses an operational, contractual or full life-cycle boundary.
Why can two forecasts give very different AI energy results?
They may assume different model sizes, utilization rates, hardware efficiency, cooling designs, geographic growth and dates for grid connections. A forecast that counts only servers will also be lower than one that includes cooling, networking and facility overhead.
Can nuclear power eliminate the oil link for AI?
Nuclear generation can reduce the need for gas or coal at the electricity stage, but it does not remove petroleum use in mining, construction, transport, backup equipment or petrochemical manufacturing. Its effect is mainly to change the marginal power source.
What evidence would establish a measurable AI-driven oil increase?
A credible estimate would define a time period and boundary, measure incremental data-centre load by region, identify the marginal generation and backup fuels, and model construction and macroeconomic effects. It should also subtract documented efficiency savings and report uncertainty rather than present one unexplained number.
