Yes—AI can use sound, infrared images, and HVAC operating data to flag abnormal behavior and suggest likely faults. But sound and heat patterns are clues, not stand-alone proof: the evidence reviewed does not establish a universal accuracy rate or a validated sound-and-thermal system that can diagnose every HVAC fault without technician confirmation.
How sound and thermal imaging fit into HVAC fault diagnosis
AI-driven fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) combines measurements from equipment and its surroundings to detect unusual operation, classify a likely fault, and guide maintenance. In a multimodal setup, microphones capture acoustic changes, an infrared camera maps surface temperatures, and conventional sensors provide operating context. Software aligns those signals with the system’s mode—such as start-up, cooling, or heating—before estimating what may be wrong.
This is an extension of a broader FDD approach, not a replacement for it. NIST describes adaptable FDD algorithms, open-source measurement tools, dataloggers, and an AC/heat-pump FDD tester and evaluator. Recent work has also used ontologies and generalized rules to turn model outputs into more interpretable diagnostic reports.

What each signal can—and cannot—tell you
| Signal | What it may reveal | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Sound | Changes in tonal, broadband, or time-varying sound may flag issues involving a fan, bearing, compressor, valve, or airflow. | Background noise can mask the signal. The reviewed sources establish no universal HVAC sound-frequency threshold for a fault. |
| Thermal imagery | An infrared camera provides a non-contact map of surface temperatures and temperature patterns across components or air paths. | Readings depend on emissivity, reflections, viewing angle, distance, airflow, and weather; a hot or cold patch alone does not identify its cause. |
| Operating telemetry | Temperatures, pressures, power, airflow, setpoints, weather, and run state can help distinguish a fault from a normal change in mode or load. | Equipment models can react differently to the same fault, so interpretation needs suitable equipment-specific context and baselines. |
An ACM-reported residential AC deployment used infrared imaging remotely at 10-second intervals over 50 days. That demonstrates a monitoring approach, not a universal camera specification or proof that thermal images alone diagnose faults.

How an AI sound-and-thermal workflow works
- Collect synchronized signals. Record audio, infrared frames, and HVAC telemetry with timestamps so the system can compare what it heard and saw with the equipment’s operating state.
- Identify the equipment and mode. Label the system configuration and whether it is starting, running, changing modes, or stopped. Flag occlusions, reflections, start-up transients, and irrelevant background sounds rather than treating them as fault evidence.
- Prepare the data. Audio can be represented as time-frequency features such as spectrograms; thermal images can be normalized against an appropriate reference or baseline. The relevant reference depends on the equipment and operating conditions.
- Detect and classify abnormal behavior. A model can flag anomalies or classify them against labeled fault examples. The output should be combined with telemetry and checked for plausible operating conditions, not accepted as a diagnosis solely because a model assigns a label.
- Explain the result for inspection. A useful report identifies the suspected fault, the evidence behind it, uncertainty, and a recommended check. Ontology and rule support, as demonstrated in a 2026 AFDD study, can make reports more interpretable than an opaque class label.
Which faults have been reported as detectable?
The findings are tied to particular projects and equipment; they do not mean every sound-and-thermal system can identify all of these faults.
- Airflow reduction and incorrect refrigerant charging: A U.S. Department of Energy project reported detection and diagnosis of both. It reported successful detection when fault severity reached a 30% threshold; the available description does not define that threshold as a universal measure. Simultaneous faults required a second validation method.
- Air-handling and control faults: A 2026 AFDD study reported automatic diagnosis of supply-air sensor, temperature-control-valve, cooling-capacity, supply-chilled-water-temperature, and unreasonable-setpoint faults.
- Acoustic component cues: Abnormal fan, bearing, compressor, valve, or airflow signatures are plausible anomaly cues, but the reviewed evidence does not establish a validated universal acoustic threshold for these HVAC faults.
How accurate is AI HVAC fault detection?
Published performance figures describe specific tasks and test settings. They are not a guaranteed accuracy rate for an AI product that combines sound and thermal images.

| Study or project | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Lee et al., Applied Energy, 2026 | Up to 30% higher diagnostic accuracy and 50% higher macro-F1 than baselines. | A comparative result for the study’s evaluated method and baselines; it is not a field-performance guarantee for other systems. |
| Lee et al., Applied Energy, 2026 | 90–97% lower memory demand and 20–25% shorter training time. | Reported computational-efficiency results, not diagnostic-accuracy figures. |
| Applied Energy study, 2023 | Reported precision of 89% for a single-zone AHU, 85% for an RTU, and 79% for a multi-zone AHU. | Precision is the share of positive fault predictions that were correct in the study’s setting; it is not the same as overall accuracy and does not show how many faults were missed. |
| DOE project | Reported detection of airflow reduction and incorrect refrigerant charging at a 30% severity threshold. | A project-specific fault-detection result; simultaneous faults required a second validation method. |
These figures cannot be combined into a single number for “AI HVAC accuracy.” Results depend on the fault classes, equipment, operating conditions, data, and evaluation method. The reviewed evidence supplies no universal accuracy figure for the exact sound-plus-thermal approach.
Why false alarms and missed faults remain possible
- Systems differ. NIST reports that different air conditioners can respond differently and show different degrees of degradation under the same fault. A model trained on one system may not transfer reliably to another.
- Fault examples are uneven. Fault labels are often scarce and imbalanced. A model can perform well on common classes while giving unreliable results on rare faults, and a confident-looking score does not by itself establish reliability.
- Sensors are affected by their surroundings. Thermal readings can shift with reflections, emissivity, angle, distance, airflow, or weather. Sound can be obscured by fans, occupants, or nearby machinery.
- Operating conditions change. Start-up, mode changes, load, and weather can produce patterns that resemble a fault unless the system knows the operating state.
For deployment, representative normal and faulty data, sensor calibration, drift monitoring, and technician confirmation matter alongside the model. A camera or microphone can help prioritize inspection, but the evidence here does not support treating either as an autonomous diagnostic authority.

What to check when evaluating a system
For a building operator or technician comparing implementations, ask for evidence in these areas:
- Sensing coverage: Does it use audio, thermal imagery, telemetry, or a combination? Are the signals synchronized and interpreted with operating state?
- Fault scope and severity: Which fault classes were tested, on which equipment, and across what severity range? Were simultaneous faults included?
- Transfer to your equipment: What labeled data and equipment-specific calibration are needed? Has performance been evaluated on equipment not used to train the model?
- Misses and false alarms: Request both false-alarm and missed-fault results, along with the test conditions and class balance. Precision alone does not answer both questions.
- Explainability and workflow: Can a technician see the evidence, uncertainty, and next inspection step behind an alert?
- Operational fit: Check edge-versus-cloud latency and privacy implications, environmental robustness, calibration needs, drift monitoring, and total deployment and maintenance cost.
When a thermal camera is useful
An HVAC thermal imaging camera can support inspection by showing temperature patterns without contact. It is most useful as one input to a diagnosis—alongside operating data and, where appropriate, acoustic measurements—not as proof that a particular component has failed. NIST identifies handheld FDD devices as a commercial diagnostic category, and infrared imaging has been used for remote AC monitoring; neither fact establishes a universal product capability, price, or payback period.
