Yes, in some circumstances—but a microphone being ready to detect a wake word is not the same as continuously uploading everything in the room. Google says Assistant processes brief audio snippets locally while waiting and does not send or save them when it detects no activation. Amazon says Alexa devices by default send no audio to the cloud until they detect a wake word or someone presses an activation button. A mistaken wake-word match or accidental button activation can nevertheless start a recording and send nearby speech for processing. The details depend on the device, service, and settings.

What does “listening” mean on a voice assistant?

“Listening” can describe several different things, and separating them is the first step to understanding the privacy risk. A smart speaker may have its microphone available and analyze sound on the device to detect a wake word. That does not, by itself, mean the device is recording every conversation to a company’s servers. After an activation, however, it may capture audio and send it to the provider for processing.

For this topic, the available evidence concerns voice assistants and smart speakers, particularly Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. It does not establish how every product marketed as an AI device behaves. A phone, wearable, camera, or conversational gadget may have different microphones, activation features, controls, and data practices; check that product’s own documentation and settings rather than assuming the speaker examples apply.

Four stages to distinguish

  1. Standby detection: The microphone is available to detect an activation signal, such as a chosen wake word. In the assistant designs described by Google and Amazon, this stage includes local detection.
  2. Activation: The device thinks it heard a wake word, or a person presses a button. An unintended activation can happen as well as an intentional one.
  3. Transmission and processing: Once activated, the assistant may send audio to the provider’s cloud to interpret the request. This is different from standby detection.
  4. Retention and access: Whether a recording or transcript is stored, how long it remains, and whether it can be reviewed are separate questions. They may depend on account settings and provider policies.

These stages are not interchangeable: a device can locally check for an activation without uploading all surrounding speech, and an activated request can be transmitted without answering every question about how long it is retained. “Is the microphone on?” and “Is audio being sent or saved?” are therefore different questions.

Do Google Assistant and Alexa send standby audio to the cloud?

Google and Amazon describe their assistants as waiting for activation rather than routinely sending all room audio to the cloud. Those are vendor descriptions of their services, not independent verification of every model or a guarantee about all voice-enabled devices.

Assistant Standby behavior described by the provider What the provider says happens after activation
Google Assistant Google says Assistant processes short snippets of audio locally while in standby and does not send or save them if it detects no activation. Google says an activated device exits standby and sends the request to Google servers. The recording may include a few seconds before the activation so the request is complete.
Amazon Alexa Amazon says Alexa devices by default do not store or send audio to the cloud unless the wake word is detected or Alexa is activated by a button. Amazon says a request recording is sent to its cloud and transcribed to help process the request.

The word “default” matters: these descriptions do not establish that all devices, settings, or modes behave identically. Nor do they mean a device never captures audio by mistake. Google’s explanation that a recording may include audio from just before activation also matters: a clip can contain speech spoken before anyone deliberately addressed the assistant.

Can an assistant activate when nobody meant to speak to it?

Yes. A sound can resemble a wake word, or a device can be activated unintentionally using a button. When the assistant treats that sound or action as a real request, it may start recording and transmit audio for processing.

The Federal Trade Commission warns that voice assistants might mishear people and start recording unexpectedly. The UK government has also discussed mistaken detections and unintentionally recorded snippets. These sources establish a plausible failure mode, not how often it happens on a particular device. There is no supported prevalence figure here, so it would be misleading to turn the possibility into a percentage or claim that every assistant will frequently activate by mistake.

If a false activation occurs, the device may capture more than the sound that triggered it: Google says an activated recording can include a few seconds before the wake word. A nearby conversation could therefore be part of a request clip even if no one intended to ask a question. The important distinction is that this is an activation-related exception, not evidence that the assistant normally sends every standby snippet to the cloud.

What can an assistant do after it has been activated?

Activation can change the privacy situation from local standby detection to cloud processing. The provider may receive audio to understand the request; after that, retention, deletion, and review depend on the service’s policies and account settings.

Follow-up interaction can extend an activation

Some assistants offer a follow-up mode that lets a person continue interacting without repeating the wake word. Amazon describes Follow Up Mode on certain devices. Its FAQ says the feature is on for compatible Echo devices and the Alexa app when a user joins Alexa+. Because this is a feature-specific setting that may change, check the current controls for the particular device and account. A mode that allows follow-up interaction is different from ordinary standby detection: it affects when another spoken request may be treated as part of an interaction.

Transmission does not settle retention

An audio request being sent for processing does not, on its own, tell you whether a recording or transcript will be retained, for how long, or whether a person may review it. The FTC’s consumer guidance points readers toward reviewing recording history and available privacy controls. Google’s documentation also distinguishes standby snippets that it says are not sent or saved from activated requests. For the account you use, inspect its current history, deletion, auto-delete, retention, and human-review options instead of inferring them from the microphone’s status light.

How can you reduce the chance of unintended recording?

Use controls that change the device’s ability to hear or activate, and separately check account settings that govern recordings after an activation. The exact controls vary by product, so verify what each control does on your model.

1. Use the physical microphone control when you need a hard pause

Look for a microphone mute button or switch and use it when you want to prevent voice-assistant listening. The FTC recommends checking for a physical listening control and indicators that show active listening. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security also advises considering whether a device can turn off active listening. Check the device’s own instructions to learn what its mute control disables and how it indicates that state.

2. Check every activation mode

Review whether the device supports hands-free wake-word activation, button-to-activate use, follow-up interaction, or sound-detection features. These options vary by product. If you do not want hands-free activation, find out whether the device allows you to switch it off and use a button-based mode instead. Do not assume that turning off one feature disables every other way the assistant can be activated.

3. Inspect history and account privacy settings

In the assistant account or app, look for recording history, deletion tools, automatic deletion, retention choices, and any option to opt out of human review. These controls address what happens to data associated with an activation; they are separate from the device’s physical ability to detect a wake word. Read the current setting descriptions before changing them so you understand whether a choice affects stored audio, transcripts, or both.

4. Review microphone permissions on other devices

On phones and other devices, check which apps have microphone permission and remove access from apps that do not need it. This is a separate issue from a smart speaker’s wake-word behavior: an app permission can determine whether an app is allowed to access a device’s microphone, while the speaker’s activation controls govern its assistant.

5. Mute or turn off an assistant during sensitive discussions

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security advises turning off a digital assistant when discussing sensitive information nearby. If the device offers a physical microphone mute or an off control, use it rather than relying on the assumption that no one has said the wake word. When comparing products, consider what leaves the device, who can access audio or transcripts, how long they are retained, whether they are shared, and whether local storage is available.

How should you assess a device’s privacy claims?

Look for answers to specific questions about its microphone, activation paths, data flow, and account controls. A broad claim that a device is “private” is less useful than knowing which audio is processed locally, what triggers cloud transmission, and what happens after a request is received.

  • What activates it? Check whether it responds to a wake word, a button, follow-up interaction, or sound detection, and which of those modes you can disable.
  • What happens before activation? Look for a clear explanation of local standby detection and whether the provider says unactivated snippets are sent or saved.
  • What happens after activation? Find out whether request audio is transmitted, whether a transcript is created, and whether the recording may include speech just before the wake word.
  • How can you tell it is active? Check for visible or audible indicators and learn what they mean. An indicator can help you recognize an active state, but it is not a substitute for understanding the device’s controls and data practices.
  • What control is available? Check for a physical microphone mute, button-to-activate option, app-level controls, and local-storage choices.
  • What happens to recordings? Review retention, deletion, sharing, and human-review policies, along with the controls in the account you actually use.

The FTC, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, the UK government, and the European Data Protection Supervisor provide consumer or policy context for assessing voice assistants and audio privacy. Provider documentation is useful for understanding intended product behavior, while independent government and regulator materials explain risks such as mistaken activation and controls consumers can examine. The available evidence does not support declaring one of the two assistants categorically safer.

What is the practical answer?

A wake-word assistant may keep a microphone available and process sound locally while waiting, without sending every conversation to the cloud. But false detections and unintended button activations can start a recording, and activated audio may be transmitted for processing. For sensitive conversations, use the device’s mute or off control; for everyday use, check activation modes and account controls rather than treating “standby,” “recording,” “sent,” and “saved” as the same state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a television or nearby conversation trigger a voice assistant?

A sound that resembles the assistant’s wake word can be mistaken for an activation, so speech from nearby sources may be relevant. The available sources do not establish how likely that is for a particular television, room, or device model.

Does a light on my smart speaker prove that no audio was sent?

An indicator can help show an active state, but its meaning is specific to the device. Check the manufacturer’s explanation of the indicator and use account history and privacy controls to understand what happened to activated requests.

Can I see every audio snippet an assistant processed while waiting?

Google says standby snippets that do not trigger an activation are not sent or saved, so they would not be expected to appear as cloud recordings under that description. This claim is specific to Google’s stated Assistant behavior and should not be generalized to other devices.

Is a transcript the same thing as a voice recording?

No. A transcript is text derived from speech, while a recording is audio; a service may handle or retain them differently. Check the specific account controls and policy for each type of data.
