AI agents can now inspect an application or repository, turn requirements into test scenarios, write test code, run that code, analyze failures, and sometimes repair the tests. They do not make testing automatic or trustworthy by themselves. The useful pattern is a controlled loop: an independently defined behavior specification, framework-aware generation, execution in a reproducible environment, failure diagnosis, and human review of the resulting assertions and diff.

Playwright documents the clearest browser-testing version of this loop with separate planner, generator, and healer agents. Broader coding agents and research systems can set up and execute suites in many languages, but their results still depend on current documentation, stable locators, correct expectations, and evidence from real runs.

What can an AI agent do in an automated testing workflow?

An AI testing agent is a language-model system connected to tools such as a repository, terminal, browser, test runner, and build logs. Instead of returning code once, it can make a plan, take an action, inspect the result, and choose the next action.

  • Understand the target: inspect requirements, existing tests, source code, project conventions, and configuration.
  • Plan scenarios: identify normal, boundary, negative, and recovery paths that should be verified.
  • Generate tests: create files, fixtures, locators, setup code, and assertions in the project’s framework.
  • Execute: invoke the appropriate test command and collect output, screenshots, traces, console messages, or network events.
  • Diagnose and revise: distinguish a product defect from a bad locator, timing issue, environment problem, or incorrect assertion.
  • Report evidence: leave a reviewable diff, test result, and failure context for a person or CI system.

Generation is therefore only one stage. A test that looks plausible but has never run is unverified; a passing test with an assertion that checks the wrong outcome is misleading.

How does the Playwright planner-generator-healer loop work?

Playwright’s documented browser workflow separates planning, code creation, and repair. Its documentation says, “Playwright comes with three Playwright Test Agents out of the box: planner, generator and healer.”

1. Planner: explore and write a test plan

The planner explores the application and produces a Markdown plan. That plan should describe user-visible behavior rather than merely list clicks: the starting state, meaningful inputs, expected result, and important alternate paths. Treating the plan as an artifact makes omissions visible before code is generated.

2. Generator: turn the plan into Playwright files

The generator transforms the plan into Playwright Test files. The documented artifacts include specs, a seed test, generated tests, and a Playwright configuration. A generated file is still ordinary test code: it belongs in version control, needs the project’s fixtures and data setup, and must be reviewed like a human-authored change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Healer: run the suite and investigate failures

The healer executes the suite and automatically repairs failing tests. “Repair” does not prove that the application is correct. A changed locator may restore execution while hiding a changed requirement, and an altered assertion can make a test pass for the wrong reason. Keep the original failure, the proposed change, and the new run result together for review.

What does Playwright code generation add?

Playwright’s codegen records browser interactions and prioritizes role, text, and test-id locators. It can also create visibility, text, and value assertions. Recording a flow is useful for establishing syntax and a first locator, but the resulting script still needs cleanup: remove incidental steps, replace unstable selectors, and assert the business outcome rather than only that a page element appeared.

Playwright supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, includes a full test runner, offers a CLI intended for coding-agent use, and exposes an MCP server for structured browser control. Those capabilities give an agent a direct execution path, but they do not supply the expected behavior or test data.

How do broader coding agents generate and execute repository tests?

Repository agents follow a wider loop than browser exploration. Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code guidance recommends first inspecting the existing framework and conventions, recording a baseline, defining behavior from requirements, running the smallest relevant selection, investigating failures, and reviewing the diff. GitHub describes agents similarly: they plan, use tools, inspect results, and revise their actions.

  1. Map the repository. Find the package manager, test command, configuration, fixtures, naming rules, and existing patterns before asking for new tests.
  2. Establish a baseline. Run the relevant existing tests and record the environment and result. A pre-existing failure must not be attributed to the generated change.
  3. Write or attach an independent specification. State the behavior, inputs, expected outputs, permissions, error handling, and data assumptions in language separate from the implementation.
  4. Give the agent current context. Include the framework version, local examples, API references, changelogs, and commands that are valid for this repository.
  5. Generate the smallest useful change. Ask for focused tests and fixtures rather than an unbounded rewrite of the suite.
  6. Run a narrow selection first. Use the project’s documented command or a file/test-name filter, then expand to the full suite after local failures are understood.
  7. Inspect output and revise. Provide logs, traces, screenshots, and stack traces to the agent; do not accept a patch simply because the process ended without an error.
  8. Review the diff and assertions. Confirm that each assertion represents a requirement and that the test would fail if the behavior regressed.

Microsoft’s concise rule is worth applying in every framework: “Treat tests that weren’t run as unverified.”

Can AI-generated tests actually run reliably?

They can run, but reliability varies sharply with the available specification and existing suite. An empirical 2024 study by Khalid El Haji, Carolin Brandt, and Andy Zaidman evaluated 290 Python tests generated from 53 sampled open-source tests. When an existing test suite was present, 45.28% were passing and 54.72% were failing, broken, or empty. Without an existing suite, 92.45% were failing, broken, or empty.

Study condition Passing tests Failing, broken, or empty What the figure means
Existing test suite available 45.28% 54.72% Generated code benefited from surrounding examples and infrastructure, but more than half still did not provide a passing test.
No existing test suite 7.55% 92.45% Generation without an established suite was substantially less dependable in this sample.

These percentages come from that study’s sample; they are not a universal pass rate for every language, model, prompt, or project. They do establish a practical policy: require an independent behavioral specification, execute every generated test, inspect whether assertions check real outcomes, and treat coverage claims as unproven until the suite demonstrates them.

How can an agent execute tests in arbitrary projects?

Browser agents solve a specialized problem. ExecutionAgent, presented in Islem Bouzenia’s 2025 ACM paper “You Name It, I Run It,” targets autonomous setup and execution of test suites across arbitrary projects. It uses meta-prompting for technology-specific guidance, parses project documentation and web resources, connects to terminal tools, monitors command output, and iteratively refines the process.

The evaluation covered 50 open-source projects, 14 programming languages, and multiple build and test tools. This is broader than a Playwright browser loop: the agent must discover how a project is built, locate its test entry points, resolve setup problems, and adapt to different ecosystems. It is research evidence for the feasibility of tool-using execution, not a guarantee that an arbitrary production repository can be prepared without engineering work.

Should you use Playwright or Selenium with an AI coding agent?

Choose based on the application, existing investment, and operational environment. Playwright offers a particularly explicit documented planner-generator-healer workflow for browser tests; Selenium remains viable when its current APIs, waits, drivers, and execution topology are supplied accurately to the agent.

Decision area Playwright Selenium
Agent workflow Documented planner, generator, and healer agents Agents can generate and run tests when given current Selenium guidance
Browser control Structured browser control through an MCP server; support for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit WebDriver control, with WebDriver BiDi for console and network events
Locator guidance Codegen prioritizes role, text, and test-id locators Prefer stable IDs, names, or CSS attributes; avoid copied absolute XPath
Waiting strategy Use the framework’s locator and assertion behavior rather than fixed delays Use an explicit wait for the condition the next line depends on; Selenium guidance says, “Never sleep in a test.”
Driver and browser setup Managed through Playwright’s project configuration and runner Selenium Manager is the default driver and browser-management tool
Parallel execution Provided through the Playwright test runner Selenium Grid runs tests in parallel across machines

What Selenium-specific instructions prevent common agent mistakes?

Selenium’s current AI-agent guidance warns that models often reproduce Selenium 2 or 3 patterns, fixed sleeps, manually downloaded drivers, and absolute XPath copied from examples. Give the agent the versioned documentation, examples, API references, and changelogs before it writes code.

  • Start one fresh WebDriver session per test.
  • Use explicit waits tied to the condition required by the next operation.
  • Prefer stable IDs, names, or CSS attributes over brittle XPath.
  • Use Selenium Manager instead of hand-managed driver downloads.
  • Use WebDriver BiDi when console or network events are part of diagnosis.
  • Open a real browser or run a throwaway script so the agent verifies locators instead of guessing.

What should a human review in an AI-generated test?

Human review is essential because an agent can encode a wrong expectation, test an implementation detail, or produce code that never reaches a meaningful assertion.

How do agents diagnose and repair failing tests without hiding defects?

Start by classifying the failure before changing code. A locator timeout, a server startup error, an assertion mismatch, and a genuine application exception require different responses.

Locator or timing failure

Inspect the rendered state and replace guessed selectors or sleeps with a stable locator and a condition-based wait. Verify the element in a real browser session rather than accepting a syntactically valid selector.

Environment or fixture failure

Check dependencies, service health, credentials, migrations, feature flags, and test data. Fix setup or make the dependency explicit; do not weaken the assertion to accommodate a missing prerequisite.

Assertion mismatch

Compare the expected behavior with the independent requirement. If the product is wrong, preserve the failing test and report the defect. If the requirement or fixture is wrong, update the specification and test together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Application defect

Keep the failure reproducible, capture the relevant output, and avoid allowing a healer to rewrite the test into a passing but weaker check. A repaired test is useful only when its new behavior has been reviewed.

What does an agentic testing architecture look like?

A reference design from AMD combines an LLM server, a Playwright MCP server, and a Streamlit user interface. It interprets Gherkin-style Given-When-Then specifications, sends browser actions through MCP, reports progress, and produces a downloadable Pytest module that can rerun the browser tests.

This architecture illustrates useful boundaries: the specification defines intent, the model plans, MCP provides controlled browser tools, the runner produces repeatable results, and the generated module preserves an executable artifact. It is a reference architecture, not evidence that every deployment will achieve the same reliability. Teams still need versioned environments, test data management, secrets handling, CI integration, and review gates.

What are the most common failure modes and fixes?

Failure mode Why it happens Practical fix
Test passes without checking the requirement The agent copies a click path or asserts only that a page loaded State the observable outcome first and require an assertion that would fail when it regresses
Flaky timing Fixed sleeps or assumptions about rendering order Wait for the condition needed by the next action and use deterministic fixtures
Obsolete API usage The model recalls an older framework version Provide versioned documentation, examples, and changelogs; pin the project version
Brittle locator Absolute XPath or generated CSS depends on layout Use stable roles, labels, test IDs, IDs, names, or deliberate CSS attributes
False diagnosis The agent treats an environment outage as a product failure, or vice versa Capture logs and traces, reproduce in a clean session, and classify the failure before editing
Unreviewed repair A healer changes an assertion or removes a scenario to make the run green Review the diff against the independent specification and retain the original failure evidence

What evidence should a team require before accepting generated tests?

Use an acceptance gate that is independent of the model’s confidence or explanation. Require the test plan or requirement, the generated diff, the exact command and environment, the run result, and failure artifacts when applicable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A reviewer can explain what behavior each test protects.
  • The test runs from a clean, reproducible environment.
  • Assertions fail when the protected behavior is deliberately broken.
  • Locators, waits, sessions, and fixtures follow the chosen framework’s current guidance.
  • Failures are classified and reproducible rather than dismissed as flakiness.
  • Coverage claims identify which scenarios were exercised and which remain untested.

The strongest signal is not that an LLM wrote the file. It is a repeatable run whose assertions, inputs, and failure evidence a person can inspect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI agent write unit tests as well as browser tests?

Yes, repository agents can work with unit, integration, and end-to-end suites when they receive the project’s framework conventions and commands. The browser-specific planner-generator-healer loop is documented for Playwright, while arbitrary-language execution requires the agent to discover each project’s build and test tooling.

How do I stop an AI agent from changing tests instead of fixing the product?

Require the agent to classify each failure and show the original log, proposed diff, and rerun result. Protect assertion changes with code review and compare every change with an independently written requirement.

What should I give an AI agent before asking it to generate tests?

Provide the framework and version, test commands, representative existing tests, fixtures, API references, changelogs, environment setup, and a behavior specification. Also state which files and services it may modify so the generated change stays bounded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can generated tests replace a dedicated QA review?

No. Agents can increase scenario exploration and reduce boilerplate, but they can encode incorrect expectations or miss important risks. Human review is still needed for requirements, data isolation, assertion strength, security-sensitive paths, and release impact.
