Sometimes, but not by default. An AI agent can read or write only the files its runtime exposes, and it can communicate with another agent only through channels the deployment allows. A shared environment or read-write mount may give agents the same files; separate sessions may have completely private workspaces. Network access is a separate control: two sandboxes can share an orchestrator, artifact store, or tool server while direct sandbox-to-sandbox networking remains blocked. To know what is possible, inspect the filesystem mounts, environment boundaries, network policy, integrations, credentials, and workspace lifetime in your specific system.
What does “sandbox” mean for an AI agent?
A sandbox is an execution environment that limits what agent-generated code can see and do. In OpenAI’s architecture, documentation distinguishes the harness (orchestration and tool routing) from the sandbox compute where shell commands and file operations run. A sandbox can include a Unix-like filesystem, installed packages, mounted data, exposed ports, snapshots, and controlled access to external systems. The word itself does not specify which of those features are enabled.
The harness, environment, and application server are separate concepts in the OpenAI Agents API. An environment can be optional and may be a remote sandbox, a laptop, a Docker container, or an AWS Lambda function. The application can receive progress, invoke tools, and manage the lifecycle even when the agent’s compute environment cannot reach another sandbox directly.
That separation creates two independent questions:
- File access: Which paths are mounted, and are they read-only, read-write, shared, or private?
- Communication: Which network destinations, services, tool servers, and orchestrator-mediated message paths are permitted?
A restrictive filesystem does not necessarily imply a blocked network, and a blocked network does not prevent two agents from exchanging results through an application-controlled channel.

Can two AI agents access the same files?
Yes, if they run in the same environment or are given a common storage path. Merely belonging to the same application, workflow, or team does not create implicit file sharing. A deployment must deliberately expose a shared filesystem, mount, database, object store, or artifact exchange.
Shared environment
OpenAI states that agents sharing a self-hosted environment can access the same files, credentials, and other resources. This is convenient for a multi-agent workflow in which one agent produces a file and another edits it, but the environment becomes a shared trust boundary. Any agent with permission to execute code there may be able to inspect resources available to its peers.
Separate environments
Agents assigned to different environments normally see different filesystems. OpenAI recommends isolating environments by user or workload when data must not be shared. To transfer information between isolated environments, the application must explicitly copy a file, publish an artifact, call a service, or pass a message.

| Workspace mode | What the agent can see | What happens to edits | Typical boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mountless sandbox | No host workspace is mounted; the agent works only with files created inside the sandbox. | Edits stay inside that sandbox unless exported. | Strong separation from the host working tree. |
| Direct read-write mount | The host working tree is visible at the mounted path. | Changes appear on the host immediately and may affect executable project configuration. | Convenient collaboration, but the host tree is a live trust boundary. |
| Read-only source with private clone | The source repository is mounted read-only; the agent receives a private in-VM clone for work. | Edits remain in the private clone until deliberately fetched, merged, or exported. | Isolated changes with an explicit integration step. |
| Separate hosted session | A session-specific workspace that other sessions do not automatically share. | Files persist only for the documented session lifetime unless published as artifacts. | Private per-session storage. |
The mountless, direct-mount, and private-clone descriptions above are documented by Docker for its sandbox modes. Other providers may use different names or defaults, so verify the actual mount configuration rather than inferring behavior from the word “sandbox.”
Can AI agents communicate directly across sandboxes?
Only when the network policy permits it. Direct peer-to-peer networking is one possible channel, not a requirement for multi-agent communication. Docker documents that its sandboxes cannot communicate directly with one another or share a network with the host. Its allowed outbound TCP traffic is routed through a policy-enforcing proxy, so an agent may reach only destinations approved by that policy.
Direct network connection
In a deployment that permits it, one sandbox can call another over an internal address, port, or service-discovery name. You must still define authentication, authorization, encryption, and an allow-list of destinations. A network route alone does not establish that the receiving agent can read the sender’s files; the sender must expose an API or service.

Harness handoff
An orchestrator can pass an agent’s text, structured result, or tool output to another agent without opening a socket between their sandboxes. OpenAI’s sandbox and Agents API documentation describe handoffs and agents-as-tools as orchestration patterns. The receiving agent gets only the data selected by the harness, which allows filtering, validation, and approval before transfer.

Shared storage or artifacts
Two isolated agents can exchange a report through a shared database, object store, queue, or artifact directory. This is indirect communication: the storage service is the bridge, and its access policy determines who can read or write each item. OpenAI-hosted sandbox sessions, for example, document publishing files under a designated output directory so they can be downloaded as artifacts; persistence and cleanup are product-specific.
Tool and MCP integrations
An MCP server or other tool server can provide a controlled communication path to a repository, ticket system, database, or internal API. The agent does not need unrestricted network access if the tool exposes only the operations and records the deployment allows. Check where the server runs, which credentials it holds, and whether multiple agents can call it.
| Channel | Requires direct sandbox networking? | Main control point |
|---|---|---|
| Agent-to-agent HTTP or TCP | Yes | Network policy, service authentication, and destination allow-list |
| Harness handoff or agents-as-tools | No | Orchestrator routing, schema validation, and output filtering |
| Shared filesystem | No, if both processes share the environment | Mount permissions, Unix permissions, and environment isolation |
| Database, queue, or object store | No direct peer path | Service credentials, tenant boundaries, and record-level access |
| MCP or other tool server | Only from the sandbox to the approved tool endpoint | Tool scope, server placement, and credential mediation |
How do I determine what agents can access in my deployment?
Audit the runtime rather than relying on a product label. The following sequence separates local file exposure from communication paths.
- Inventory mounts. Record every mounted path, its owner, and whether it is read-only or read-write. Include temporary directories, repository mounts, home directories, and mounted secrets.
- Identify the sharing scope. Determine whether the environment is shared per process, session, user, workload, or entire host. Two agents launched by one application may still receive separate environments.
- Check host visibility. Test whether edits are immediately visible on the host or in another agent. A direct mount behaves differently from a private clone or an artifact export.
- Map network policy. List permitted outbound destinations, listening ports, proxy rules, DNS behavior, and whether private service addresses are reachable. Verify whether peer sandboxes are explicitly denied.
- List integration endpoints. Document MCP servers, application APIs, queues, databases, artifact stores, and host services. For each, state which agent can call it and which operations are exposed.
- Trace credentials. Find out whether tokens are placed inside the sandbox, injected into requests by a proxy or worker, or held only by the application server. Treat every shared credential as shared access.
- Confirm lifecycle. Establish when files are deleted, when snapshots are discarded, and how outputs are exported. A workspace that survives a session can expose data to a later process if cleanup is incomplete.
Run the audit with a low-privilege test agent and a non-sensitive fixture. Observe the filesystem, environment variables, network errors, and exported artifacts; do not probe production data merely to discover a boundary.
How do OpenAI environments handle sharing and credentials?
OpenAI’s documentation gives two different deployment patterns. In a self-hosted environment, agents that share the environment can access the same files, credentials, and other resources. That model is appropriate only when those agents belong to the same data boundary. If users or workloads require separation, give them separate environments rather than relying on agent instructions not to inspect neighboring files.

OpenAI’s self-hosted guidance describes a restricted environment key for connecting the executor and recommends keeping the application’s main API key outside the sandbox. The application can mediate operations through narrower tools or requests instead of placing a broad secret in agent-visible files or environment variables.
OpenAI-hosted sessions have separate workspaces, and files persist while the sandbox exists. Files intended to survive the session can be published through the designated output mechanism as downloadable artifacts. These are product-specific lifecycle rules, not a guarantee that every hosted or self-hosted environment behaves the same way.
What do Docker sandbox modes imply for file and network isolation?
Docker’s documented modes make the trade-offs visible. A direct mount exposes the host working tree read-write, so an agent can modify files that the host and other processes use immediately. Docker warns that such edits can affect executable project configuration and other host-visible files. A mountless sandbox removes that host workspace mount, while clone mode keeps the source repository read-only and gives the agent a private in-VM clone for edits.
Docker also documents that sandboxes cannot communicate directly with each other or share a network with the host. Outbound traffic is policy-controlled through a proxy, and integrations such as an MCP gateway are explicit connections. Therefore, a Docker agent may be able to call an approved tool while being unable to open a socket to a neighboring sandbox.
Do not generalize these behaviors to every container or sandbox product. Check the provider’s stated defaults and the policy generated for your particular workload.
How should credentials and shared services be secured?
Assume that code running in an agent can use every file, credential, and network destination available to its environment. OpenAI’s security guidance states this directly. Keep secrets outside the sandbox whenever possible and expose narrowly scoped operations through a broker, proxy, or tool server.

- Use separate environments for different users, tenants, or workloads that must not share data.
- Prefer short-lived, least-privilege tokens tied to one service or operation.
- Inject credentials at a mediation layer when feasible, rather than writing them to files the agent can read.
- Give shared storage separate namespaces and enforce authorization at the service, not only in agent prompts.
- Make direct mounts read-only unless live host edits are essential; use a private clone or exported patch for safer changes.
- Log tool calls, artifact reads and writes, network destinations, and credential-broker decisions.
- Define deletion and revocation procedures for session termination, failed jobs, and abandoned workspaces.
Cloudflare’s sandbox architecture illustrates credential mediation: a Worker controls which hostnames a task-specific Linux sandbox can reach and adds an API token to model requests so the sandbox does not receive that token directly. The pattern is more important than the particular product: keep authority in a controller that can restrict, audit, and revoke it.
Which design should I choose for a multi-agent workflow?
Choose the smallest sharing boundary that supports the workflow. Use the following comparison when deciding how agents should exchange work.
| Requirement | Suitable pattern | Reason and caution |
|---|---|---|
| Agents edit one trusted project together | Shared environment or carefully controlled direct mount | Fast visibility, but every agent shares the project’s files and credentials. |
| Agents need independent changes to one repository | Read-only source plus private clones | Edits stay isolated and can be reviewed before merge. |
| Agents handle different customers’ data | Separate environments and separate service namespaces | Aligns environment boundaries with data boundaries. |
| One agent must summarize another’s result | Harness handoff with a typed, filtered payload | No peer network is required; transfer only the necessary fields. |
| Agents need a common knowledge base | Brokered database, queue, or artifact store | Centralize authorization, retention, and audit rather than sharing a broad filesystem. |
| Agents need a few external actions | Allow-listed tool or MCP server | Expose specific operations instead of unrestricted egress and credentials. |
What commonly goes wrong, and how can I fix it?
“The second agent cannot find the first agent’s file.”
They probably have separate workspaces, or the file was created outside the mounted path. Export the file as an artifact, write it to an explicitly shared store, or run both agents in a documented shared environment. Verify the path and mount mode from each runtime.
“A shared mount let one agent change production configuration.”
That is expected from a direct read-write mount. Replace it with a read-only source and private clone, or mount only a disposable working directory. Add review and merge steps before changes reach executable host files.
“Agents share an orchestrator but cannot call each other by IP.”
Orchestration does not imply peer networking. Use a harness handoff, agents-as-tools call, queue, artifact store, or an explicitly approved service endpoint instead of weakening the network policy unnecessarily.
“The agent can reach a tool, but the tool’s secret is not visible.”
This can be an intentional credential-broker design. Confirm that the controller signs or forwards only the allowed request, that the token is short-lived, and that logs identify the calling workload without exposing the secret.

“Old files appear in a new run.”
Check session persistence, snapshot reuse, shared temporary directories, and artifact retention. Add an explicit cleanup step and unique per-run namespaces if the provider does not guarantee a fresh workspace.
What is the practical answer for a security review?
Document six controls for every agent runtime: filesystem mode, sharing scope, network policy, integration path, credential handling, and persistence or cleanup. Then test both the intended path and the denied path: confirm that an approved artifact can be transferred, while an unapproved host file, peer address, or credential remains inaccessible. This produces a meaningful boundary description instead of the vague claim that an agent is “sandboxed.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent read files on my laptop if it runs in a sandbox?
Only if the deployment mounts those laptop files or exposes a tool or service that can read them. A mountless or separately hosted environment cannot see arbitrary host paths, while a direct read-write mount can expose the mounted working tree and make edits visible immediately.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo AI agents need the internet to work together?
No. A harness can pass structured results, and agents can exchange artifacts through a shared store or queue without direct internet or peer networking. Internet access is needed only for destinations and integrations that the workflow explicitly uses.
Are files deleted when an AI agent session ends?
That depends on the provider and session type. Some hosted workspaces persist only while the sandbox exists, while exported artifacts may outlive it; self-hosted environments can retain files until your cleanup process removes them.
What is safer for code changes: a shared folder or separate clones?
Separate private clones are safer when changes require review because the source can remain read-only and edits can be merged deliberately. A shared read-write folder is faster for trusted collaborators but lets one agent immediately alter files used by the host or other agents.
Can an MCP server connect agents that cannot reach each other?
Yes. If both runtimes can call the approved MCP endpoint, the server can store or transform messages on their behalf. Its placement, authentication, exposed operations, and data isolation determine what the connection actually permits.
