A VPN can protect some of your iPhone’s network traffic, especially on untrusted Wi‑Fi, but it cannot remove spyware, detect a compromised operating system, or patch an iOS exploit. A VPN encrypts traffic between the phone and the VPN server. Spyware running on the phone can still read information before it is encrypted or after it is decrypted, and any traffic outside the VPN tunnel is unaffected.
If you are concerned about sophisticated targeting, combine a VPN with current iOS and app updates, Apple ID protections, and—when appropriate—Apple’s Lockdown Mode. Those controls address different parts of the threat rather than providing interchangeable protection.
What does a VPN actually protect on an iPhone?
A VPN primarily protects data while it travels across a network. It creates an encrypted connection from the iPhone to a VPN server, which can reduce the chance that someone on the same hostile Wi‑Fi network will read or tamper with that traffic. The UK National Cyber Security Centre summarizes the boundary precisely: “Only traffic which is routed over the VPN will be protected by it.”

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →That boundary matters because spyware is a device-level problem. Malicious software with access to the phone can capture messages, photos, passwords, microphone input, or screen content before an app sends data through the tunnel. It can also observe information after an app receives and decrypts it. A VPN does not scan iOS processes, remove malicious configuration, or repair a vulnerable Apple component.

| Risk or layer | What a VPN can do | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Untrusted or public Wi‑Fi | Encrypt traffic routed through the VPN, reducing local eavesdropping risk. | Guarantee that the Wi‑Fi network, VPN provider, or destination service is trustworthy. |
| Spyware already on the iPhone | Possibly conceal some network destinations from the local network. | Detect, remove, or stop the spyware from reading data on the device. |
| Traffic outside the tunnel | Nothing unless the VPN configuration routes that traffic through it. | Protect split-tunnel traffic, excluded apps, or a connection made before the VPN starts. |
| iOS vulnerabilities | At most, reduce exposure to certain network-based attacks in a narrow circumstance. | Patch the operating system or prevent a zero-click exploit delivered through an allowed service. |
| Apple ID authentication | Protect the network path used during sign-in, if routed through the VPN. | Replace two-factor authentication or a hardware security key. |
A VPN also moves trust rather than eliminating it. Your VPN provider can potentially see connection metadata and must be evaluated for its security controls, privacy policy, logging practices, reliability, and handling of legal requests. Encryption between your iPhone and the VPN server does not make the entire internet anonymous.
Will a VPN stop Pegasus or another targeted spyware attack?
No. A VPN is not a defense against spyware such as Pegasus. Highly sophisticated spyware can exploit weaknesses in iOS or an app and then operate locally. If the exploit succeeds, the attacker does not need to defeat the VPN’s encryption to read data on the phone.
The BLASTPASS case illustrates the distinction. In an 8 September 2023 advisory, CERT‑EU described a zero-click chain that could compromise iPhones through malicious PassKit attachments without the victim tapping a link. Apple addressed the relevant vulnerabilities in iOS 16.6.1 and related operating-system updates. A VPN would not have installed those fixes; updating the affected software was the protective action.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Network encryption can still be sensible for ordinary exposure on a hostile wireless network. The FBI advises that, if you must use unsecured Wi‑Fi, you should use a VPN service that starts upon initial connection. That is network-safety guidance, not a statement that VPNs prevent device infection or targeted exploitation.
How is Apple’s Lockdown Mode different from a VPN?
Lockdown Mode changes the iPhone’s attack surface; a VPN changes how selected traffic travels. Apple calls Lockdown Mode “an extreme protection feature for iPhone” and intends it for the small group of people who may be targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, including mercenary spyware.
When enabled, Apple documents restrictions such as:
- Blocking or limiting many message attachments and complex message features.
- Disabling complex web technologies and other high-risk browser capabilities.
- Rejecting unsolicited FaceTime calls and certain other service requests from people you have not contacted.
- Restricting wired connections while the iPhone is locked.
- Blocking installation of configuration profiles and applying additional safeguards to device management.
These restrictions reduce functionality. Some websites, communications, attachments, and accessories may not work normally, so Lockdown Mode is not a default replacement for a VPN or a setting every user needs.

How to turn on Lockdown Mode
- Open Settings and select Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to Lockdown Mode and tap Turn On Lockdown Mode.
- Read the feature summary, tap the confirmation control, and allow the iPhone to restart when prompted.
- Repeat the process on other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID if you need equivalent restrictions across those devices.
Before enabling it, list the contacts, websites, work systems, and accessories you rely on. That makes it easier to identify a compatibility problem as a deliberate restriction rather than a malfunction.
Which updates reduce the risk of iPhone spyware?
Install iOS and app updates promptly. Security fixes close the vulnerabilities that spyware authors seek, while a VPN leaves those vulnerabilities in place. The BLASTPASS advisory is a concrete example: Apple’s fixes, not network tunnelling, addressed the vulnerable components.
Update iOS
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Install the latest update offered for your iPhone. Keep the phone connected to power and a trusted network during the installation.
- Enable Automatic Updates on the Software Update screen if your circumstances allow automatic installation.
Update apps
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account picture.
- Install available updates, or enable automatic app updates in the App Store settings.
Restarting the phone regularly is also included in FBI mobile-security guidance. A restart is not a spyware-removal guarantee, but it is a low-cost maintenance step and can ensure updates and system changes complete properly.
How should I configure a VPN on an iPhone?
For Wi‑Fi protection, the useful goal is automatic, full-device routing with a fail-closed behavior where the provider supports it. Configuration labels differ by app and iOS version, so verify the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming every VPN offers the same controls.
- Install the VPN app from the App Store and create an account only after reviewing its privacy policy and logging claims.
- Approve the iOS VPN configuration when prompted. iOS may require your device passcode or biometric authentication.
- Choose a protocol supported by both the app and your provider. Prefer a modern, well-documented protocol over an obsolete option.
- Turn on auto-connect or connect on demand for unknown or untrusted Wi‑Fi networks.
- Use full-device routing when your objective is general Wi‑Fi protection. Check whether the app excludes particular apps or destinations.
- Enable a kill switch or forced-routing option if the provider implements one reliably. Test what happens when the VPN connection drops.
- After connecting, confirm the VPN indicator in iOS and test a service you normally use. A connected icon alone does not prove that every app is routed through the tunnel.
Split tunnelling deserves special caution. It deliberately sends selected apps or destinations outside the tunnel, which can improve compatibility or performance but can expose sensitive traffic. The NCSC specifically warns that split tunnelling can expose sensitive data. If you cannot identify what is excluded, use the provider’s full-device mode instead.
How do I compare VPN services for iPhone security?
Do not judge a service solely by its number of servers or a speed claim. Compare the controls that determine whether protection is present when you need it and the evidence that the provider handles your traffic responsibly.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Routing coverage | Does it route all iPhone traffic, or only selected apps? Are DNS requests included? | Unrouted traffic remains outside the VPN’s protection. |
| Automatic connection | Can it start when an unknown Wi‑Fi network is joined, before ordinary traffic flows? | A manual connection can leave a short but important exposure window. |
| Drop behavior | Is there a tested kill switch or forced-routing mode? | Without fail-closed behavior, traffic may fall back to the ordinary connection. |
| Protocol support | Which current protocols are supported, and are they documented? | Protocol quality affects security, compatibility, and battery use. |
| Provider trust | What data is collected, how long is it retained, and is there independent security evidence? | The provider becomes a new party able to observe connection information. |
| Reliability | Does it reconnect consistently after sleep, cellular handoffs, and Wi‑Fi changes? | Intermittent protection is easy to mistake for continuous protection. |
There is no VPN feature that turns the service into an iPhone anti-spyware scanner. Treat claims that a VPN can clean an infected phone or guarantee protection from advanced spyware as a category error.

What account and permission protections should accompany a VPN?
Protect the accounts that spyware or a stolen password could be used to access. The FBI recommends two-factor authentication or security keys for critical accounts, along with reviewing application and network-sharing permissions.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Use two-factor authentication on your Apple ID and other high-value accounts.
- For accounts that support them, consider a hardware security key. It strengthens authentication, but it does not protect the iPhone operating system from spyware and cannot remove an infection.
- Review which apps have access to location, photos, contacts, microphone, camera, Bluetooth, and local-network discovery. Remove access an app does not need.
- Check personal-hotspot, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, and other sharing settings, especially after travelling or using a shared device.
- Use a unique, strong Apple ID password and never approve an unexpected sign-in request.
These measures address account takeover and unnecessary access. They do not substitute for iOS patching or Lockdown Mode when the concern is a sophisticated device exploit.
What should I do if I suspect spyware on my iPhone?
Do not assume that installing a VPN proves the phone is clean. If you have a credible reason to suspect targeted compromise—such as a warning from Apple, a high-risk professional role, or evidence tied to a known campaign—treat it as an incident rather than a Wi‑Fi configuration problem.
- Install the latest iOS and app updates available for the device.
- Review Apple ID sign-in activity, trusted devices, recovery methods, and two-factor-authentication settings.
- Review application permissions and remove software you no longer recognize or need.
- Consider Lockdown Mode if your risk profile matches Apple’s intended audience and you can accept its restrictions.
- Seek qualified incident-response or digital-forensics help before making major changes if legal, employment, or personal-safety consequences are possible.
- Use a separate, trusted device to change critical passwords if you believe the iPhone itself may be monitored.
A factory reset may be appropriate in some incidents, but it is not a universal answer and can destroy evidence needed for investigation. A professional can help decide whether to preserve the device, replace it, or reset it.
Is a VPN necessary on cellular data?
Cellular networks are not the same as an open café hotspot, so the immediate local eavesdropping concern may be different. The spyware question is unchanged: a VPN still cannot repair an exploited iPhone. Use one when you need its network-privacy benefits, but keep updates, account security, and device protections in place regardless of the connection type.

Can I buy a physical product that solves this problem?
No single purchase honestly answers the question. A VPN is software, Lockdown Mode is built into supported Apple operating systems, and a hardware security key protects account authentication. None of these, alone, removes spyware from an iPhone.
If a seller presents a security key as protection against iOS spyware, read the claim narrowly: the key can make it harder for an attacker to sign in to an account even if they know the password, but it does not inspect or harden the operating system.

Which protection should I use for my situation?
Choose the control that matches the layer of risk you are trying to reduce.
| Your concern | Priority action | Role of a VPN |
|---|---|---|
| Someone snooping on public Wi‑Fi | Use automatic VPN connection with full-device routing where practical; avoid sensitive activity on networks you do not trust. | Helpful for traffic routed through the tunnel. |
| A newly reported iOS exploit | Install Apple’s security update immediately and update affected apps. | Not a substitute for the patch. |
| Highly sophisticated, targeted attack | Update devices, secure the Apple ID, consider Lockdown Mode, and obtain professional help if compromise is suspected. | Only a supplementary network control. |
| Concern about account takeover | Enable two-factor authentication and consider a hardware security key for critical accounts. | Protects the connection, not the account by itself. |
| Choosing between two VPNs | Compare routing, auto-connect, drop behavior, protocol, independent evidence, privacy policy, and reliability. | Quality depends on these implementation details. |
The practical answer is layered: use a reputable, correctly configured VPN for untrusted-network exposure, keep iOS and apps current, harden accounts, and reserve Lockdown Mode for the elevated-risk situations it was designed to address.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a VPN detect spyware on an iPhone?
No. A VPN app can usually show whether its encrypted tunnel is connected, but that status says nothing about the integrity of iOS or the processes running on the phone. Detection requires device-focused security analysis, and a credible suspected-targeting case may warrant professional incident response.
Does Lockdown Mode work without a VPN?
Yes. Lockdown Mode is an iPhone operating-system feature that restricts selected capabilities to reduce attack surface; it does not depend on a VPN subscription. You can use both, but they mitigate different layers of risk.
Will changing my Apple ID password remove iPhone spyware?
No. Changing the password and enabling two-factor authentication can protect the account from further unauthorized sign-ins, but they do not clean the operating system. If device compromise is plausible, update iOS and obtain advice on incident handling rather than relying on an account change alone.
Should I use split tunnelling on an iPhone?
Use it only when you understand exactly which apps and destinations are excluded and accept that their traffic is outside the VPN. For a simple public-Wi‑Fi safety goal, full-device routing is easier to verify; the NCSC warns that split tunnelling can expose sensitive data.
