Can a renewed game trademark mean a remake or sequel is coming? Not on its own. In the United States, renewing a federal trademark registration is a way to keep an existing registration active, generally by showing continued use of the mark. It is not a publisher announcement or evidence of a development schedule.
What a U.S. trademark renewal actually means
A federal trademark registration is not kept active indefinitely without paperwork. The owner must file the required maintenance documents, and continued use of the mark in commerce is generally part of that process. The USPTO puts it plainly: “You must use your trademark in commerce.” See the USPTO’s federal registration maintenance guidance.
For ordinary U.S. federal registrations, the USPTO’s maintenance schedule, accessed in 2026, calls for a Section 8 Declaration of Use between the fifth and sixth years after registration. Between the ninth and tenth years, the owner must submit a combined Section 8 Declaration of Use and Section 9 Application for Renewal. The combined filing is then due every ten years. What the filing can—and cannot—tell you

A renewal filing can show that someone has asked to keep an existing registration active. Check the record’s status: filing alone does not establish that the USPTO accepted it. The registration record and submitted documents can also help identify the listed owner, covered goods and services, filing basis, and dates.

A Section 9 application seeks renewal of the existing registration. The combined maintenance filing concerns use of the mark for the goods and services listed in the registration, or provides information about claimed excusable nonuse. USPTO guidance describes specimens such as tags or labels affixed to goods and advertisements for services as examples of evidence of use; they demonstrate use, not a new game’s development. What it cannot establish by itself
A maintenance renewal does not confirm that a publisher has approved a project, started development, selected a release window, or decided to make a remake rather than a sequel. Nor does it confirm a remaster, re-release, or licensing deal. Those conclusions follow from the filing’s stated maintenance purpose and contents; they are not a claim that publishers never renew marks before launching games.

No reliable industry statistic establishes how often game-trademark renewals are followed by remake or sequel announcements. A renewal alone therefore cannot support a probability or prediction.
How to check whether a game is actually coming
- Find the official registration record. Use the USPTO’s trademark maintenance definitions and resources to understand the record and filing terms. Check the mark owner, listed goods and services, dates, filing basis, and current status.
- Read the actual maintenance submission. Determine whether it is a filing to maintain or renew the existing registration, and whether it has been accepted. Do not treat the filing date as an announcement date.
- Look for separate, attributable project evidence. A publisher or rights-holder announcement, or a concrete product listing attributable to the publisher, is more relevant to whether a game is planned than a maintenance filing.
- Describe the evidence precisely. Distinguish a formal announcement from a broad filing, and a planned project from one listed for preorder or release. Call it a remake, remaster, re-release, sequel, or licensing project only when the supporting evidence identifies that type.
Check the jurisdiction before applying U.S. rules
The deadlines and filing descriptions above concern U.S. federal registrations and USPTO procedures. Trademark maintenance rules differ by jurisdiction; for a registration outside the United States, consult the relevant jurisdiction’s official register and rules rather than applying the USPTO schedule.
