Yes—AMD’s four-core EPYC 4124P delivered playable frame rates in several games when paired with an RTX 4060 in a 2024 creator test. But those results describe one system and specific settings, not a guarantee for every PC or a recommendation to buy this server-oriented processor for gaming.

What the EPYC 4124P is—and what the test can show

The EPYC 4124P is an enterprise-oriented processor with four cores and eight threads. AMD lists a 3.8 GHz base frequency, boost up to 5.1 GHz, 65 W TDP, 16 MB of L3 cache, two memory channels, and support for DDR5-5200 memory in its EPYC 4004 datasheet.

Those specifications establish what the chip is; they do not predict game performance by themselves. Frame rates also depend on the graphics card, game, resolution, settings, and the rest of the system. The figures below come from one creator’s test, reported by Tom’s Hardware, rather than a controlled comparison across processors.

How the 2024 test was configured

RandomGaminginHD tested the 4124P with an RTX 4060, 32 GB of 6400 MHz memory, and an Asus Prime X870E motherboard. Games were run at 1080p, but settings differed by title. Tom’s Hardware reported the results on December 13, 2024; they should be read as results for that configuration and those settings, not as guaranteed performance on another system. Tom’s Hardware’s report includes the test context.

Counter-Strike 2 1080p, High; anti-aliasing off 269.6 128.2
Fortnite 1080p, Medium; Nanite enabled 96.2 70.8

All figures are from RandomGaminginHD’s test as reported by Tom’s Hardware in 2024; the test report is the source for the settings and results. Average FPS indicates overall throughput, while 1% lows help show how much performance dipped during slower moments. The lows make the results more informative than averages alone, particularly for games where a smooth-feeling experience matters.

Why the RTX 4060 pairing matters

The headline is not that any four-core CPU can keep any graphics card busy. In several 1440p tests with an RTX 4070 Super, Tom’s Hardware said the 4124P struggled to fully utilize the GPU. Counter-Strike 2 was a notable case: reported GPU utilization was around 50% to 75%. A more powerful GPU can expose CPU limits that are less apparent with the RTX 4060 configuration.

That distinction is central to interpreting the result. The test shows that four cores did not prevent playable performance in these particular games and conditions. It does not establish how the chip compares with current gaming CPUs, nor does it provide a basis for ranking it against them. A fair processor comparison needs matched game versions, graphics cards, resolution, settings, and memory, along with both averages and 1% lows.

Should you choose the EPYC 4124P for a gaming PC?

These results are interesting evidence that core count alone does not decide whether a system can run games at playable frame rates. They are not enough to make the 4124P a general-purpose gaming recommendation: the reported results come from one creator’s test, and stronger graphics hardware exposed CPU limitations in some tested cases.
