A DIY gaming mouse can be a rewarding maker project, but the headline claim needs qualification: the 2022 project behind “DIY Gaming Mouse Beats The Competition, Costs Less” was compared with Logitech’s MX Master 3, not tested head-to-head against dedicated gaming mice. Its creator’s reported 1,000 Hz refresh rate and roughly ten-times-responsiveness claim are not independent test results. A separate open-source design documents a 55 g build and 1,000 Hz tracking, but it uses different hardware and has a hardcoded 1,200 DPI configuration.

What did the original DIY mouse actually beat?

Hackaday’s August 15, 2022 article describes Tyler Richard’s customizable mouse project as an alternative to Logitech’s MX Master 3. The article reports a historical $100 price reference for the Logitech and Richard’s claim that his project was roughly ten times as responsive, citing a 1,000 Hz refresh rate. Those are claims reported in the article, not the result of a controlled comparison. The source does not document a contest against gaming-focused retail mice, so its headline should not be read as proof that a homemade mouse generally beats gaming competition. Hackaday’s project report

Two projects, two different specifications

The Hackaday feature and the open-source Gaming Mouse repository describe distinct builds. Their sensor and design details should not be combined as if they were one mouse.

Project Sensor and electronics Documented performance details Important qualification
Tyler Richard’s project, reported by Hackaday in 2022 PMW3389 sensor; article describes replacement electronics for a wireless donor mouse. The article reports the creator’s 1,000 Hz refresh-rate and roughly ten-times-responsiveness claims. Those are attributed claims, not independent measurements. Replacement electronics were wired-only at the time of the article; the sensor was difficult to obtain in single quantities, and button changes required code because there was no friendly configuration GUI. Hackaday, 2022
Open-source DIY Gaming Mouse repository PixArt PMW3360, RP2040, custom PCB, and a 3D-printed shell. The repository README documents 55 g total assembly weight, 1,000 Hz tracking, and a hardcoded 1,200 DPI configuration. These are project documentation specifications, not independent test results. Configurable DPI and button rebinding are incomplete or code-dependent. Project README

A 1,000 Hz polling or tracking rate alone does not establish sensor accuracy, click latency, wireless performance, comfort, or superiority in games. Those require measurements under comparable conditions, which the sources do not provide.

What parts does the open-source build need?

The repository’s parts list makes clear that this is more than a printed shell around a readily available sensor. It calls for:

  • A salvaged PixArt PMW3360 sensor and its lens.
  • Six Omron D2F-01F switches or compatible parts.
  • An 11 mm Alps-compatible scroll-wheel encoder.
  • Mouse feet around 0.6 mm thick, a USB cable, screws, and components for a custom PCB.
  • Multiple 3D-printed shell, button, and scroll-wheel parts.

The README says the PMW3360 is not commercially sold to hobbyists or small repair shops. It describes breakout boards, reseller sources, or salvage from a commercial mouse as possible routes. Check the exact sensor part number and provenance: a generic optical sensor is not automatically compatible. The project also warns that mouse-foot thickness and sensor height can affect tracking. What skills and tools are involved?

Expect an advanced electronics and fabrication project, not a quick way to save money. The repository calls for experience or willingness to learn across several areas:

  • 3D printing and slicer use, plus repeated test prints, cleanup, and fit adjustment.
  • Embedded C/C++ and firmware debugging.
  • PCB fabrication or assembly and careful soldering; the README cautions that delicate components make hand assembly difficult for non-experts.
  • Hot-air rework to salvage the sensor, along with a temperature-controlled soldering iron, tweezers, and deburring tools.

Mechanical precision matters as much as electronics: shell fit, button travel, sensor height, and glide-feet thickness all affect the finished mouse. Budget time for iteration, not just assembly.

Will building one cost less than buying a gaming mouse?

The available sources do not establish a current, reproducible total cost. They do not provide a complete bill of materials with current prices, labor time, or a current retail comparison. Hackaday’s $100 MX Master 3 figure is a historical 2022 reference, not a current price. The project may reuse parts or use existing tools, but custom PCB work, sensor sourcing, print iterations, and equipment can change the economics substantially. The phrase “costs less” is therefore a historical project claim, not a verified savings estimate for a build made today.

  • Sensor and firmware: verify the exact sensor, supported settings, and whether DPI or button changes require editing code.

  • Connection and ergonomics: determine whether the specific build is wired or wireless and whether its shell fits your hand and grip.
  • Time and repairability: weigh the customization and repair potential against sourcing parts, assembling delicate electronics, and debugging firmware.

The project makes most sense for a maker who values learning, customization, and a repairable build, and already has access to fabrication and rework tools. If the main goal is predictable gaming performance for the least money, the available project documentation is not enough to show that either design is a better deal than a current gaming mouse.
