For most players, the Digital Standard Edition is the sensible purchase. It gives you the complete game, preorder bonuses and a same-platform $30 route to the Vault content later. Buy the Digital Vault Edition at preorder if you already want its operator packs, BlackCell season and DMZ items—or if you qualify for the 10% Vault loyalty discount, which is not available when upgrading. Choose a physical Standard copy only when owning a disc, giving a boxed copy or collecting matters more than digital flexibility.
Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23, 2026, with campaign early access for preorder customers beginning October 16. It is sold on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2; Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are not supported.

Modern Warfare 4 editions at a glance
There are three practical buying choices: Digital Standard, Digital Vault and a physical Standard disc for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. The base game is the same; the price and bundled extras differ.
| Edition | Includes | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital Standard | Full game, Open Beta Early Access, Hunter Killer Operator Skin and other all-digital preorder bonuses | Players who want the lowest-cost digital purchase and the option to decide on Vault extras later | The 10% Vault loyalty discount cannot be recovered through a later upgrade |
| Digital Vault | Standard game, Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, Special Forces Operator Pack, Signature Weapon Collection, one Season 1 BlackCell season and DMZ Deployment Bonus | Players who already value the cosmetic, seasonal and DMZ additions | Digital-only; the US Xbox MSRP is $99.99 |
| Physical Standard (PS5/Xbox Series X) | Full base game on disc | Disc collectors, gift buyers and people who prefer a physical copy | No PC disc edition, and physical copies cannot be upgraded to Vault |
What you receive with Digital Standard
Digital Standard is not a shortened or trial version. It contains the complete Modern Warfare 4 base game. Its preorder package includes Open Beta Early Access, the Hunter Killer Operator Skin and other digital preorder rewards published for the edition.
#1 Best Overall
- BONUS 2X OFFER — Purchase Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 at Amazon and receive 5 hours of Double XP.**
- PRE-ORDER BONUS — Pre-order and unlock the Hunter Killer Operator Skin and the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack.*
- GLOBE‑SPANNING CAMPAIGN — Fight across the Korean Peninsula, New York, Paris, and Mumbai in a high‑stakes narrative where global conflict escalates and survival depends on tactical precision.
- MULTIPLAYER BUILT ON CONTROL — Engage in grounded, precise combat where fluid movement, player choice, and refined mechanics give you greater control in every firefight.
- TACTICAL DMZ OPERATIONS — Deploy behind enemy lines as an off‑the‑books asset, making high‑risk decisions on objectives and extraction in a dynamic mode where every run counts.
The main advantage is optionality. You pay the lower initial price and can continue with the base game if the additional cosmetics, BlackCell season and DMZ inventory do not interest you. A same-platform Vault upgrade remains available for $30, subject to the digital storefront and account rules for the platform on which you bought Standard.
That flexibility has one financial catch: an eligible preorder customer’s 10% Vault loyalty discount applies to a direct Vault preorder, not to the later upgrade. If you might definitely buy Vault and qualify for the discount, buying Standard first generally costs more than taking the discounted Vault route.
What the Digital Vault Edition adds
Vault is a digital bundle built on top of the complete Standard game. Its extras fall into four groups: operator cosmetics, weapon cosmetics, seasonal progression and DMZ equipment.
Hostile Alliance Operator Pack
This pack contains skins for Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix. These are cosmetic operator options rather than separate playable campaigns or characters with a different game mode.

- Call of Duty: Modern Wafare II PS5
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is the sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Modern Warfare.
- Featuring the return of the iconic, team leader Captain John Price, the fearless John "Soap" MacTavish, the seasoned Sergeant Kyle "Gaz” Garrick, and the lone wolf himself, fan favorite Simon “Ghost” Riley, players will witness what makes Task Force 141 the legendary squad it is today.
- Some features may require an internet connection and an online subscription
Special Forces Operator Pack
Special Forces supplies four operators with national-themed designs. The bundle is intended for players who want more visual loadout choices from launch.
Signature Weapon Collection
The collection adds signature weapon cosmetics. The published edition description identifies the collection but does not state a separate weapon-stat advantage, so it should be treated as customization content rather than a competitive performance upgrade.
Season 1 BlackCell
Vault includes one Season 1 BlackCell season and its associated Battle Pass benefits. It is a one-season entitlement, not a promise of every future BlackCell season.

DMZ Deployment Bonus
The DMZ bonus provides one additional Active Duty slot plus a package of contracts, rescue beacons, Fulton markers, backpacks and 2-Plate Carriers. These items matter most to players who expect to spend substantial time in DMZ; they have little value if you plan to play only the campaign or traditional multiplayer.

- EXTREME-RANGE SNIPING Series veterans are in for a challenge, as Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 demands a new level of skill, focus, and precision, with many targets now over a 1000m away - a first for the series
- NEXT - LEVEL REALISM Developed by the same studio behind the original game, Contracts 2 pushes new boundaries with its hyper-realistic sniping experience; master a wide arsenal of weaponry based on authentic military equipment; explore vast terrains with an enhanced level of detail; and confront the series’ most lifelike enemies to date.
- PLAN YOUR ASSAULT Equipped with all-new equipment, each highly replayable contract can be completed in a variety of ways. Replay the mission with a different approach to complete all objectives, ready to spend your earnings on improved gadgets and weaponry.
- UPGRADED VISUALS Contracts 2 introduces new levels of fidelity, with optimized visuals, improved FPS, and an enhanced game engine, resulting in the best looking entry to the series yet. Pull off ultra realistic stealth kills, captured in viscerally graphic detail thanks to the cinematic bullet cam.
Prices, discounts and the real cost of upgrading
| Purchase route | Published US Xbox price | What the price means |
|---|---|---|
| Digital Standard | $69.99 | One-time MSRP for the complete digital game |
| Digital Vault | $99.99 | One-time MSRP for the complete game plus Vault extras |
| Standard-to-Vault upgrade | $30 | Same-platform digital upgrade price published by Activision and Call of Duty |
| Eligible Vault preorder loyalty offer | 10% off Vault | Available to qualifying players during preorder through October 23, 2026; not valid on an upgrade |
At the published US Xbox prices, buying Standard and then paying the $30 upgrade totals $99.99 before taxes—the same as the regular Vault MSRP. The upgrade therefore preserves flexibility rather than creating a normal-price saving. The meaningful saving is available only when an eligible player uses the 10% loyalty offer on a direct Vault preorder. The final amount shown at checkout can vary by region, taxes and storefront currency.
The loyalty rule is account- and platform-dependent. Xbox and Activision describe eligibility as owning and having played a qualifying premium Call of Duty title on the same platform account. The offer runs during preorder, through October 23, 2026. If your qualification is uncertain, verify the discount in the store before completing payment rather than assuming it will be applied.
Which edition should you buy?
Choose Digital Standard when you want the game first and extras later
- You want the complete game at the lower $69.99 US Xbox MSRP.
- You are unsure whether the Vault operator packs, BlackCell season or DMZ equipment will matter to you.
- You want a same-platform $30 upgrade available if your priorities change.
- You are buying on PC or a digital console storefront and do not need a disc.
This is the default recommendation because it avoids paying for content you may never use while retaining a clear upgrade path.
Choose Digital Vault at preorder when the extras are already valuable
- You specifically want the Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix Hostile Alliance skins.
- You want the four national-themed Special Forces operators and the Signature Weapon Collection.
- You expect to use the Season 1 BlackCell benefits.
- You play DMZ often enough for an extra Active Duty slot and the deployment supplies to affect your planning.
- You qualify for the 10% preorder loyalty discount and have confirmed it appears on your account.
Vault is also the cleaner choice when you know you will buy all of those additions eventually. Do not buy it solely because it sounds like a premium edition: the base game, not the Vault label, determines access to the campaign and core modes.
Rank #4
- Includes PS5 version of game
Choose Physical Standard for disc ownership
- You want a PS5 or Xbox Series X disc for a collection, gift or resale.
- You prefer installing or lending from physical media where supported.
- You do not need Vault content.
There is no physical PC edition listed, and the physical PS5 and Xbox Series X editions cannot be converted to Vault later. If Vault might become important, buy digital Standard or digital Vault instead of assuming a disc will preserve that option.
Preorder timing, campaign access and Game Pass
Campaign early access
Preorder customers receive campaign early access beginning October 16, 2026, exactly one week before the October 23 launch. The benefit is attached to preorder status, not to the Vault tier: a qualifying Digital Standard preorder receives it as well as a qualifying Digital Vault preorder.
Launch date
The full release is October 23, 2026. That is also the stated end date for the eligible Vault preorder loyalty offer, so waiting until after launch can remove the discount even if the edition remains on sale.
Game Pass availability
Xbox states that Modern Warfare 4 is not eligible for Xbox Game Pass at launch. To play at release, plan to purchase either Standard or Vault; an existing Game Pass subscription does not replace that purchase.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Supported platforms and account requirements
Activision lists these launch platforms:
- Xbox Series X|S
- Xbox PC
- PlayStation 5
- Battle.net
- Steam
- Nintendo Switch 2
Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are not supported. A physical version is listed for PS5 and Xbox Series X, while PC purchases are digital.
Xbox Play Anywhere
Xbox Play Anywhere covers Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC purchases. This allows a qualifying Xbox purchase to apply across those two Xbox environments under the same account, rather than requiring separate Xbox-console and Xbox-PC purchases.
Internet and subscriptions
Multiplayer and DMZ require a continuous internet connection because the game uses texture streaming. On consoles, online modes also require the relevant platform online subscription. A mobile phone number may be required during account or access checks.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →PC security checks
PC editions require TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Check that both are enabled in your system firmware and operating-system security configuration before launch; a machine that meets ordinary game-performance requirements can still fail this security prerequisite.
Quick Recap
How to decide in under a minute
- Pick your platform. If you need PS5 or Xbox Series X disc ownership, select Physical Standard; otherwise continue with a digital edition.
- Check your preorder status. If campaign access on October 16 matters, complete a qualifying preorder rather than waiting for launch day.
- Check loyalty eligibility. If you own and have played a qualifying premium Call of Duty title on the same platform account, look for the 10% Vault preorder offer before paying.
- Value the extras honestly. Choose Vault only if its operator packs, BlackCell season or DMZ package are worth the additional spend to you.
- Keep the upgrade option in mind. Digital Standard leaves a $30 same-platform upgrade available; physical Standard does not.
- Confirm technical prerequisites. Verify platform support, internet access, any required console subscription, and TPM 2.0 plus Secure Boot for PC.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Standard lacks campaign access: Standard is the full game, and preorder customers receive the same campaign early-access window.
- Expecting a disc upgrade: physical editions cannot be upgraded to Vault.
- Waiting to claim the loyalty discount: the 10% offer applies to eligible direct Vault preorders, not a later upgrade.
- Counting on Game Pass: Xbox says the game is not a launch-day Game Pass title.
- Buying for an unsupported console: Xbox One and PS4 are excluded from the listed platforms.
- Ignoring online dependencies: texture streaming means multiplayer and DMZ need continuous internet, and console online play needs the platform’s subscription.
- Assuming Vault changes gameplay power: the published extras are operators, weapon cosmetics, a seasonal pass and DMZ supplies; no separate campaign or performance advantage is specified.
Bottom line for each type of player
| Your priority | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest upfront digital cost with flexibility | Digital Standard | Full game now, preorder rewards and a $30 same-platform upgrade option |
| All listed premium extras | Digital Vault | Includes both operator packs, weapon collection, Season 1 BlackCell and DMZ bonus |
| Eligible preorder buyer seeking maximum value | Digital Vault with 10% loyalty discount | The discount is unavailable after choosing the upgrade route |
| Disc ownership | Physical Standard for PS5 or Xbox Series X | Provides the base game on disc, but no Vault upgrade path |
