CAD software can cost anywhere from $0 to several thousand dollars per user each year. The price depends on the type of design work, whether you need commercial rights and private files, the features and collaboration controls included, your billing term, and your region. In official US prices checked on October 25, 2026, examples include free restricted plans, Autodesk Fusion at $680 per year, Onshape Standard at $1,500 per user per year, Autodesk AutoCAD at $2,095 per year, and SOLIDWORKS Design plans from $2,820 to $4,716 per user per year. These are different products and tiers, not a like-for-like ranking. Use the feature, licensing, privacy and seat details below to estimate what your work will actually require.
What does CAD software cost?
There is no universal CAD price. A qualifying hobbyist may pay nothing for a restricted noncommercial plan, while a commercial designer or engineering team may spend thousands of dollars per named user annually. The following official US list prices were displayed by vendors and checked on October 25, 2026.
| Product or plan | Official US price shown | What the price means |
|---|---|---|
| Autodesk Fusion for personal use | Free | Qualifying home-based, noncommercial use only; feature and eligibility limits apply. |
| Autodesk Fusion | $680/year or $85/month | Paid product; Autodesk also lists a 30-day trial and education access for qualifying users. |
| Autodesk AutoCAD | $2,095/year | US store price for the full AutoCAD listing. |
| AutoCAD LT | $540/year | Separate, lower-priced AutoCAD product listing. |
| AutoCAD Web | $100/year | Separate web product listing. |
| Onshape Free | $0 | Noncommercial plan; documents are publicly accessible. |
| Onshape Standard | $1,500/user/year | Commercial plan with private storage. |
| Onshape Professional | $2,500/user/year | Includes Standard features plus team-oriented capabilities and company-managed data; Enterprise pricing is custom. |
| SOLIDWORKS Design Standard | $2,820/user/year | Single-user annual plan; displayed price excludes local tax. |
| SOLIDWORKS Design Professional | $3,456/user/year | Adds the listed intelligent CAD library, rendering and animation, cost estimation, and standards checking features. |
| SOLIDWORKS Design Premium | $4,716/user/year | Higher annual tier; confirm the current feature comparison and local tax at checkout. |
These are vendor list prices in US dollars, not an industry average. Promotions, taxes, eligibility rules, included capabilities and regional currencies can change. Check the live checkout page before committing.
Why do CAD prices vary so widely?
The word “CAD” covers several different jobs. Pricing is usually tied to the workflow and the business controls around it rather than to drawing tools alone.

What kind of design work are you doing?
Drafting, mechanical part and assembly design, building design, simulation, electronics and manufacturing can require different products. Autodesk’s store lists AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Revit, Inventor and Fusion as separate products, so comparing one product’s price with another’s without matching the workflow can produce a misleading result. Start by listing the outputs you must create—2D drawings, parametric parts, assemblies, building information models or manufacturing data—then compare products that support those outputs.
Do you need commercial rights and private files?
Free access often comes with both use and privacy restrictions. Autodesk’s personal-use Fusion offer is for qualifying home-based, noncommercial work; Autodesk says the user must generate less than $1,000 annually from that use and may not use it in primary employment or commercial projects. Onshape Free is also noncommercial, and its documents are publicly accessible. A free plan therefore may be unsuitable for client work, revenue-generating projects or confidential designs even when its modeling tools appear adequate.
Which features and controls are essential?
Higher tiers can add advanced manufacturing or simulation tools, support, private storage, release management, data management and team administration. Onshape Professional, for example, adds team-oriented capabilities and company-managed data over Standard. SOLIDWORKS lists an intelligent CAD library, rendering and animation, cost estimation and standards checking with its Professional tier. Pay for a higher tier only when a required workflow or control is included; a feature checklist is more useful than the product name.
How do billing terms and seat counts change the total?
Monthly billing can improve flexibility but may cost more over a full year. Autodesk Fusion is displayed at both a monthly and annual rate, while the Onshape and SOLIDWORKS examples are quoted per user annually. For a team, multiply the applicable per-user price by the number of named users and decide whether every person needs the same tier. Also account for staff who need occasional access, because a plan that looks inexpensive for one designer can become a significant recurring cost across many seats.
How do tax, region and eligibility affect the amount paid?
The figures above are US examples. SOLIDWORKS explicitly says its displayed prices exclude local tax; other vendors may calculate tax at checkout. Education, startup, personal-use and promotional eligibility can change the payable amount, and a qualification that applies in one country may not apply in another. Treat the table as a dated benchmark, not a guaranteed invoice.

Can you use CAD software for free?
Yes, but free plans are normally limited by purpose, privacy or features. They are best treated as learning or personal-use options until you confirm the license terms.
Autodesk Fusion personal use
The personal-use edition is free for qualifying home-based, noncommercial work. Autodesk’s stated conditions include generating less than $1,000 annually from the use and not using it in primary employment or commercial projects. The edition has a limited feature set. Autodesk also advertises a 30-day trial of the paid product and education access for qualifying users, which are separate eligibility routes rather than unrestricted commercial licenses.

Onshape Free costs nothing but is noncommercial and makes documents publicly accessible. That public-document condition matters for unpublished product ideas, client files, proprietary components and coursework subject to confidentiality rules. Paid Onshape plans are the route to private documents and commercial use.
What a free plan does not automatically provide
- Commercial permission for paid client or employer work.
- Private storage for intellectual property.
- The full feature set of the paid product.
- Business support, administration or data controls.
Read the current license and eligibility language before importing an existing design or sharing a file. Switching from a free plan later may require moving documents, changing permissions or replacing restricted features.
How much should an individual commercial user budget?
An individual earning money from design should compare the complete annual cost, private-file support, required modeling tools and included support—not merely the lowest advertised entry price.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The listed examples show why workflow matters. Autodesk Fusion is positioned as a lower-cost paid option in this set, while Onshape Standard costs more but includes private storage and commercial rights. AutoCAD’s full product and SOLIDWORKS Design tiers target different toolsets and therefore cannot be judged by price alone. Confirm that the plan supports the file formats, modeling methods, manufacturing or documentation tasks you perform before treating a lower price as a saving.

| Question | Why it changes your budget |
|---|---|
| Will the work generate revenue? | Noncommercial personal plans may not be licensed for it. |
| Must files remain private? | Public-document plans can expose designs and client information. |
| Do you need specialized tools? | Simulation, manufacturing, rendering or standards features may require a higher tier or another product. |
| Do you need help from the vendor? | Support and administration can be part of paid tiers or a separate negotiation. |
| Can you commit for a year? | Annual billing may differ materially from paying month to month. |
What do the main paid options represent?
The products in the price table occupy different positions, so use this comparison to identify the kind of purchase rather than to declare one “best” CAD program.
| Option | Best interpreted as | Important limitation or check |
|---|---|---|
| Autodesk Fusion | A paid design product with a lower listed annual price than the other commercial examples here. | Confirm that its included tools match your required manufacturing, simulation or collaboration workflow. |
| AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT | Separate drafting-oriented product choices with different listed prices. | Do not assume LT has the same capabilities as full AutoCAD; compare the current feature list. |
| Onshape Standard | Commercial individual or small-team plan with private storage. | Price is per user per year; confirm how many named users need access. |
| Onshape Professional | Team-oriented plan with company-managed data and Standard features. | Enterprise requirements are custom priced. |
| SOLIDWORKS Design tiers | Single-user annual plans with progressively broader listed capabilities. | Local tax is excluded from the displayed prices; verify the full feature comparison. |
How do you calculate a CAD budget for a team?
Use a seat-based calculation, then add the costs that your organization will actually incur outside the license. A simple first pass is:
Annual license budget = annual price per user × number of users.
- Count people who need to create, edit or release CAD files, not everyone who merely views a drawing.
- Assign each person the lowest tier that covers their required tasks and privacy level.
- Multiply each tier’s annual price by its seat count.
- Check whether taxes, storage, support or enterprise administration are quoted separately.
- Compare the result with monthly billing only after calculating a full twelve-month total.
For example, five seats on a plan listed at $1,500 per user annually would produce a $7,500 list-price license subtotal before tax. That is a planning example, not a quote; vendor checkout, regional tax and negotiated business terms can change the invoice.

Which CAD pricing approach fits your situation?
Hobby, learning or personal projects
Begin with a free personal-use plan if your work is genuinely noncommercial and you can accept its feature and privacy limits. Keep revenue, employment and confidentiality requirements separate from your learning projects so that a free license is not accidentally used for paid work.
One-person commercial practice
Choose a paid commercial plan that keeps files private and includes the tools you use every week. Compare annual and monthly totals, then verify support and export requirements before migrating active projects.
Small design or engineering team
Compare per-seat charges alongside permissions, private storage, release or data management and team administration. A team plan can justify a higher per-user price when it reduces manual file handling or gives managers the controls they need.
Drafting or building design
Compare the exact product for the discipline. Autodesk lists AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT separately and lists Revit as a distinct building information modeling product, so a generic “CAD” price does not identify the right tool.

What costs are not included in these prices?
The cited vendor pages establish software list prices, not a complete cost of ownership. They do not establish a universal allowance for hardware, training, implementation, migration, consulting, support beyond the plan, or internal administration. If you are preparing a business budget, list those items separately rather than treating a subscription as the entire project cost.

How should you verify a CAD price before buying?
- Open the vendor’s current pricing page for your country and currency.
- Confirm whether the displayed amount is monthly, annual, per user, promotional or a one-time charge.
- Read the commercial-use, privacy and document-access terms for free and trial plans.
- Match every required feature—such as rendering, cost estimation, simulation or data management—to the selected tier.
- Check taxes, renewal terms, seat changes and cancellation conditions at checkout.
- Save the quote or order summary with the date, because dynamic pricing can change after October 25, 2026.
Is CAD software subscription pricing worth it?
A subscription is worth considering when the included workflow, updates, support and collaboration controls save more time or risk than the recurring fee. It is poor value when a free plan is used outside its license, when a team pays for unused premium features, or when a cheaper product cannot produce the required files. Decide from the work and the license first, then use price as the final filter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a free CAD plan for client projects?
Usually not without checking the specific license. The free examples listed here are restricted to noncommercial use, and one makes documents public, so paid client work or confidential files can violate the plan conditions.
Are the listed CAD prices one-time purchases?
The cited examples are displayed as monthly or annual subscriptions, including per-user annual plans. The sources do not establish a perpetual-license option for these products, so ask the vendor directly if you require a one-time license.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Do students get CAD software for free?
Autodesk advertises education access for qualifying users, but eligibility and the products included can differ from personal-use licensing. Verify your institution, status and permitted use on the current education offer before using the software for paid work.
Why can two CAD programs with similar names cost so differently?
They may target different disciplines, such as drafting, mechanical design or building information modeling, and may include different privacy, manufacturing, simulation or administration controls. Compare the required workflow and feature list rather than the name alone.
