An open-box ROG Xbox Ally X20 can be a good buy only when the listing, hardware, accessories, return deadline and unit-specific warranty all check out. First confirm that it is the 2026 X20 with model code RC74XA, not the similarly named 2025 Xbox Ally X (RC73XA). Best Buy says an Excellent open-box product includes all parts and accessories, although the original packaging may be missing. Confirm that “all” includes the 68W adapter and any item promised by the specific listing.
Good
A Good item may lack nonessential parts or accessories. “Nonessential” does not mean irrelevant to your use, so obtain a written inventory rather than relying on the grade alone.
Fair
A Fair item can have larger cosmetic marks and missing parts or accessories. If the unit is Fair, price it according to the exact omissions and damage you can document, not the original retail package.

What should you confirm before paying?
Do these checks while the seller can still correct the listing or cancel the sale. Save screenshots of the description, SKU, condition grade and promised contents.

- Match the model. Confirm RC74XA, not RC73XA, in the listing and on the unit or box.
- Identify the SKU. At Best Buy, the standalone open-box listing uses SKU 6686854 and the bundle uses SKU 6686858. Make sure the SKU matches what you are buying.
- Request an itemized inventory. Ask the seller to state whether the 68W adapter, cables, packaging and every advertised bundle accessory are present.
- Ask for the serial-number route to warranty information. The seller can provide the serial number or perform an ASUS warranty-status check. Do not publish a serial number in a message, photograph or listing.
- Get the transaction’s return terms in writing. Confirm the final date, who handles the return, whether shipping is covered and whether the item is excluded from the normal policy.
- Ask about digital promotions. ASUS lists a qualified two-month Game Pass Premium offer, but there is no assurance that a returned device still has an unused redemption. Value the open-box unit as though the offer is absent unless the seller can establish that it is redeemable.

How should you inspect the device at pickup or immediately after delivery?

Press every face button, rear button and shoulder control repeatedly; test both triggers through partial and full travel; and verify that haptics respond without rattling. Move the transforming D-pad through both positions and check each direction in each position.

- Connect the supplied 68W adapter and confirm that the X20 recognizes external power and increases its charge level.
- Test both USB-C ports with a suitable accessory or cable. A port that charges but does not support the expected accessory function deserves further investigation.
- Insert suitable microSD Express media and confirm that the reader detects it, if you have a card available. Do not force a card into the slot.

Run a representative game briefly while watching for unexpected shutdowns, severe instability or unusual fan behavior. This is an opportunity to identify obvious faults, not a benchmark of performance or battery life. Check the reported battery condition and storage capacity, but do not apply a universal battery-health pass/fail percentage: a health report does not by itself predict real-world gaming runtime.
Does an open-box X20 include the charger?
It may, but the grade and product title are not substitutes for an itemized confirmation. ASUS specifies a 68W USB-C adapter for the X20, while retailer packages and returned units can differ. ASUS describes the 2026 bundle as including the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses, an X20-specific dbrand Killswitch and a custom Pelican case. Check each item against the seller’s bundle description and photograph what is actually present.
Best Buy’s Fair condition language permits missing parts or accessories, so a Fair bundle without the glasses is not equivalent to a complete bundle. Do not pay a bundle-level price for a package that lacks one of its named components. Keep the glasses, case and protection accessory on the same inventory sheet as the handheld and charger.
What are the return-window rules for an open-box purchase?
Best Buy’s US policy explicitly includes open-box purchases. For most products, the policy states 15 days for standard customers or 60 days for eligible Plus or Total members, with exclusions and purchase-specific terms; the period starts when you receive the item. Confirm your membership eligibility and the exact deadline shown on the order rather than assuming the longer period applies.

Open the order page and record the last return date before beginning your inspection. If the transaction is from another seller, use that seller’s written terms instead. A return promise that is only verbal, missing from the order or dependent on an exception should be treated as uncertain.

How can you establish the remaining warranty?
Warranty coverage is tied to the individual unit, not simply to the open-box grade. Ask the seller for the serial number or an ASUS entitlement check before assigning value to any remaining coverage. ASUS’s registration page does not disclose a particular serial number’s remaining warranty by itself, so do not infer coverage from the listing date or a retailer’s condition label.
Keep the purchase receipt, serial-number record and any warranty-status response together. If the seller refuses to provide a way to verify entitlement, price the unit as having uncertain warranty support and require a larger margin of safety—or walk away.

Compare the final total after tax, shipping and any replacement accessory—not merely the sticker price. Best Buy uses separate SKUs for the standalone and bundle listings, so do not compare a standalone open-box number with a bundle new price.

ASUS’s launch announcement is available at ROG Xbox Ally X20 anniversary edition availability. It states that the device was available as a standalone product or as part of an ultra-premium bundle beginning October 15, 2026; availability can change.
When is an open-box X20 a sensible purchase?
The decision is conditional: buy only when the verified model and contents, observed condition, return opportunity and unit-specific support justify the all-in savings over a comparable new package.
- Proceed: The unit is clearly RC74XA, the advertised accessories are present, the OLED and controls pass your checks, charging works, the return deadline gives you time to inspect it, and the total cost remains meaningfully lower after accounting for warranty uncertainty.
- Negotiate: The device works but has documented cosmetic wear or a nonessential missing item that you can price accurately. Put the adjustment and inventory in writing.
