Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy one eligible digital game and install its supported Xbox and Windows PC versions without purchasing the game again. Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game, then install it from each device’s library. For participating titles, supported saves, progress, achievements and add-ons carry across devices. The key limitation is eligibility: the badge applies to particular digital game listings, not every Xbox title, PC purchase or disc.
What is Xbox Play Anywhere?
Xbox Play Anywhere is a cross-buy and cross-save entitlement for participating digital games. If a specific game is eligible and you own it digitally through the Xbox and Windows storefront ecosystem, that purchase unlocks the game’s supported versions on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. The same owning Microsoft account must be used on both devices. Supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds are included, too.
“Cross-buy” means the eligible purchase grants access to supported versions on more than one device; it does not mean every version of every Xbox game is included. “Cross-save” means supported game progress can follow you between devices. Xbox also includes supported add-ons and achievements. These benefits apply to participating games, not universally across the Xbox catalog.
Xbox said there were more than 1,500 Play Anywhere games and 500 teams that had shipped them in a March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire update. Those are dated figures from Xbox, not a live catalog count; check the current Xbox Play Anywhere page for the list and each game’s listing for its eligibility.

How do I know if a game is Xbox Play Anywhere?
Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge on the exact game listing, or check Xbox’s participating-games list. Confirm the badge for the edition you plan to buy rather than relying on a similar title name, a general Xbox label or an assumption that every edition qualifies.
- Open the game’s Xbox or Windows Store listing. Find the specific edition you want. Check that the listing displays the Xbox Play Anywhere badge.
- Cross-check the participating-games list. Xbox’s Play Anywhere page lists eligible titles; use it if the store page is unclear.
- Check the purchase type. The entitlement is for digital games. An eligible digital code from a participating retailer can qualify, but a boxed Xbox disc does not provide the PC entitlement.
- Confirm account ownership. Plan to sign in on each device with the Microsoft account associated with the digital purchase or code.
Do not treat cloud-play availability, cross-play support, or the fact that a game is sold for Xbox and PC as proof of Play Anywhere eligibility. They describe different features. If the badge is missing from the exact edition’s listing, verify before buying instead of assuming another edition’s entitlement applies.
How do I set up Xbox Play Anywhere on Xbox and PC?
After you own an eligible digital game, install it separately from each device’s library using the account that owns it. You do not need to stream the Xbox version to play on PC: Play Anywhere gives access to a supported PC installation when the game is eligible.
On Xbox Series X|S
- Sign in to the Xbox console with the Microsoft account that owns the eligible digital game.
- Open My Games and Apps.
- Find the game under Ready to Install, select it and install it.
- Launch the game while signed in to the owning account.
On a Windows PC
- Sign in to Windows and the Xbox PC app with the same Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Open the Xbox PC app and go to My Library.
- Select the eligible game and install the PC version.
- Launch it from the app or your installed games, keeping the owning account signed in.
The PC version is an installation of the game for Windows, not a streamed copy of the console version. Individual games may have their own PC hardware and storage requirements, so check the listing before installation. The Xbox PC app’s general requirements are not a guarantee that a particular game will run well—or run at all—on every machine that meets them.
How does cross-save work when I switch devices?
For a participating game, supported progress and saves carry between supported devices through the game’s cloud-save support. Let the save finish syncing before changing devices; a device that is offline or still syncing may not have the latest progress yet.

Xbox introduced a Game Save Sync Indicator for PC and handheld experiences in January 2026 to show cloud-save sync status. Check that indicator before switching if you want to confirm whether the current device has completed its sync. The existence of an indicator does not mean every game has identical save behavior, and Xbox’s cited material does not establish a universal offline conflict-resolution process. If progress looks old, do not assume the latest save has already propagated.
Play Anywhere’s promise concerns supported saves and progress for participating games. It is not a guarantee that every title’s offline progress will merge automatically, that every game saves at the same moment, or that an interrupted sync can be repaired in the same way across all titles. When switching, the practical precaution is simple: connect the device, allow the game and save service time to sync, and check the indicator where available before continuing elsewhere.
What carries over besides the game itself?
For eligible games, Xbox says supported game add-ons and progress follow the player across platforms. That can include bought or earned add-ons, Season Passes, consumables and in-game unlocks, along with a shared set of Gamerscore and achievements.
Keep that benefit scoped to the participating game and its supported content. Play Anywhere does not mean that every item, account feature or multiplayer setting in every game transfers between platforms. Content may also be governed by the game’s own availability and design. The useful pre-purchase question is whether the particular title has the badge, not whether a different game handled its add-ons or saves in a certain way.
Does Xbox Play Anywhere cost extra?
Xbox describes Play Anywhere as an entitlement included with an eligible digital game purchase: you do not buy that same supported game version again on the other platform. The game itself still has a price unless you access it through another valid entitlement, and Play Anywhere does not promise a universal dollar saving because prices, editions and purchase routes vary.

Play Anywhere itself does not require Game Pass. Xbox separately offers subscription-based access and cloud gaming for certain games, but those are distinct ways to access or play a title. Do not infer that a cloud-playable game is included in Play Anywhere, or that a subscription’s access necessarily gives you a permanent digital purchase entitlement. Check whether you own the eligible digital game or have some other current access right.

Can I play the same Play Anywhere game on two devices at once?
No. Xbox says the same Play Anywhere game cannot be signed into simultaneously on a console, PC or supported handheld. One purchase should not be treated as a way for two people to play that game at once on separate devices.
This restriction is separate from cross-play. Cross-play is a game-specific feature that may let players on different platforms join one another in multiplayer; it does not establish that two people can use one Play Anywhere entitlement simultaneously. Check a game’s own multiplayer information for cross-play support and account or subscription requirements.
What devices and PC requirements should I check?
Play Anywhere supports eligible Xbox console and Windows PC versions, as well as supported Windows 11 gaming handhelds. A badge does not remove the need to check whether your particular computer or handheld meets that game’s requirements.

These Xbox PC app specifications come from the current Xbox on PC page. They should not be confused with the older instruction that Windows 10 Anniversary Update was the sole PC requirement; the current app page specifies Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher. Game-by-game requirements can still exceed the app’s baseline.

How is Play Anywhere different from cloud gaming and cross-play?
Play Anywhere is about a digital purchase entitlement and supported installations across devices. Cloud gaming is streaming a game over the internet, while cross-play is multiplayer compatibility between platforms. A title can have one of these features without having the others.

Xbox’s PC gaming information describes cloud play separately from installing games. For a PC installation through Play Anywhere, verify the badge and ownership entitlement; do not rely on a cloud-play label or cross-play feature as a substitute.
Why is my Play Anywhere game missing or showing an old save?
Start with eligibility and account ownership, then check the relevant library and save-sync status. These are sensible first checks, not guaranteed fixes for every licensing, account or save issue.
- Confirm the exact listing’s badge. A similarly named game or another edition may not have the same entitlement.
- Verify the digital purchase or eligible code. A disc purchase alone does not create the PC entitlement.
- Check the signed-in account. Both devices should use the Microsoft account associated with the qualifying digital game.
- Open the right library. On Xbox, look in My Games and Apps under Ready to Install; on PC, check My Library in the Xbox app.
- Check syncing before switching again. On PC or a supported handheld, review the Game Save Sync Indicator if available. Avoid making more progress on another device until you know which save is current.
If the game is eligible and the owning account is correct but the entitlement or save still appears wrong, the checks above do not establish a diagnosis. Consult Xbox support for account-specific or licensing issues, and the game’s support information for a title-specific save problem. Avoid deleting local data or attempting an offline save merge based only on the fact that a save looks old.

The statement captures the promise for eligible Play Anywhere games; the badge, digital ownership and account requirements determine whether it applies to a title you are considering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam purchase unlock the Xbox version through Play Anywhere?
Do not assume it will. The Play Anywhere entitlement is tied to eligible digital ownership in the Xbox and Windows storefront ecosystem or a qualifying participating-retailer digital code; a purchase from a different PC storefront does not by itself establish that entitlement.
Can I use Xbox Play Anywhere while traveling without internet?
Xbox’s cited Play Anywhere information does not promise a universal offline cross-save process. A locally installed game may have title-specific offline behavior, but progress made offline may not be available on another device until it syncs.
