Lawyie is a proposed AI legal-document infrastructure project built in Abuja for African small and midsize businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals. Its design combines jurisdiction-aware drafting, contract generation and “toxic-clause” risk scanning in one Streamlit application. The reported stack uses Llama-3-70B for reasoning, Groq LPU inference for speed, Supabase PostgreSQL for data, FPDF2 for PDFs, Python memory buffers for downloads and SHA-256 hashes for tamper evidence.
The useful lesson is architectural rather than promotional: keep model output, document rendering, delivery and integrity checks as separate stages. That separation makes a generated contract downloadable in seconds while giving users a way to detect later file changes. It still does not replace a qualified lawyer, a jurisdiction-specific review or a legally recognized electronic-signature process.
What is Lawyie, and what problem is it trying to solve?
Lawyie is the author’s proposed AI legal-document factory, developed from Abuja with African users in mind. Instead of treating a chatbot answer as the finished product, the project treats a contract as a pipeline: determine the relevant jurisdiction, generate clauses, scan for risky language, render a document, and attach an integrity record.
The motivation is access and turnaround time. SunverseAI, the project’s author, says a simple contract can cost NGN50,000–NGN100,000 and that obtaining one may take weeks (SunverseAI, 2026). The same article frames a $10 billion legal-access gap and a potential African market of 1.4 billion people. Those are author-provided context figures, not independently validated market statistics, but they explain why an instant first draft could be valuable to a small business that cannot arrange a solicitor during a live negotiation.

“When a user needs a contract in a business meeting, they can’t wait 30 seconds.” — SunverseAI, Lead Architect, 2026
Lawyie’s intended audience includes African SMEs, founders, freelancers and individuals who need a practical starting document. A generated file should be regarded as a draft for review. Local rules, tax treatment, employment requirements, consumer protections and execution formalities can differ substantially between countries and sometimes between states or provinces.
How does the three-part product concept work?
The application is organized around three functions. Each solves a different failure mode in generic contract generators.
Jurisdictional harmonization
The system is intended to adapt language to the selected African country rather than assume that a US or UK template applies everywhere. Harmonization is not the same as claiming that African law is uniform. It means making the target country explicit, conditioning prompts and templates on that choice, and warning when a clause needs local counsel.
Contract generation
A user supplies facts such as parties, consideration, term, governing law, payment schedule and termination rights. The model turns those facts into a structured draft. A production implementation should preserve the input values separately from the prose so that a correction to an address or amount can be propagated without manually editing paragraphs.

Toxic-clause risk scanning
The scanner looks for language that may be unusually one-sided or dangerous, such as unlimited liability, automatic renewal, broad indemnities, unilateral price changes, non-competes or an arbitration venue that the user did not expect. A risk flag is an explanation prompt for a lawyer, not a legal ruling. The safest output identifies the clause, quotes the relevant text and explains what practical consequence a user should investigate.
What technologies make up the “Unicorn Stack”?
The build assigns one responsibility to each component. Keeping those responsibilities distinct makes it easier to replace a model, storage service or interface without rewriting the whole product.
| Layer | Technology | Role in the project | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | Llama-3-70B | Drafting and clause analysis; selected after testing models for African statutory-law nuance. | The article documents the author’s selection process, not an independent legal-accuracy evaluation. |
| Inference | Groq LPU technology | Low-latency model execution for interactive drafting. | The author says Lawyie “thinks” at more than 300 tokens per second; that is a self-reported performance claim, not a reproduced benchmark. |
| Data | Supabase PostgreSQL | Stores application records and provides a managed PostgreSQL backbone. | Retention, access controls, encryption and regional hosting still need to be configured and documented. |
| Interface and deployment | Streamlit | Provides a mobile-friendly Python web interface and hosts the beta. | Authentication, visibility and metadata settings affect whether visitors can actually reach the app. |
| Document rendering | FPDF2 | Builds a PDF from the generated contract text. | Output handling differed across some high-end Python environments, requiring a memory-buffer workaround. |
| Integrity | Python io and SHA-256 |
Keeps PDF bytes in memory and creates a tamper-evident digest and signature ID. | A hash detects changed bytes; it does not prove identity, legal capacity or consent. |
Why choose Groq for legal-document generation?
The practical reason is latency. A contract workflow feels different when a user can iterate on parties, dates and clauses without waiting through a long generation cycle. The author selected Groq’s LPU inference for that low-latency path and reports throughput above 300 tokens per second for Lawyie. Because that number comes from the project author, it should be treated as an implementation claim that depends on model, prompt length, concurrency and service conditions.
Fast inference does not automatically produce better legal language. The prompt still needs a country, document type, facts, exclusions and an instruction to identify uncertainty. A useful sequence is to generate a structured draft first, run a separate risk-analysis pass, then render only the approved draft. Logging model version, prompt template and user edits helps explain how a particular file was produced.
How do you build the generation workflow step by step?
A small team can implement the factory as a sequence of explicit stages rather than one large callback.

- Collect structured intake. Ask for jurisdiction, document type, party names and addresses, commercial terms, start and end dates, governing law, dispute forum and any required schedules. Validate dates, currency and required fields before calling the model.
- Construct a jurisdiction-aware prompt. Tell the model which country and sub-national rules are in scope, require plain-language explanations, and instruct it to mark assumptions instead of inventing statutes or case citations.
- Generate a draft and metadata. Save the model identifier, prompt version, timestamp, selected jurisdiction and normalized intake values alongside the text. This makes later correction and audit possible.
- Run the toxic-clause scan. Ask for a machine-readable list containing clause location, risk category, explanation and a question for human review. Display those findings before offering a final download.
- Require an approval action. Let the user accept edits, regenerate a section or export a draft marked for legal review. Do not imply that clicking download constitutes execution.
- Render the approved text. Pass headings, paragraphs, signature blocks and page metadata to FPDF2. Keep the binary result in memory so the web request does not depend on a temporary file.
- Hash the exact bytes. Compute SHA-256 after rendering, store the digest and issue a unique digital-signature ID. The digest must correspond to the file the user actually receives.
- Deliver and record. Send the bytes through Streamlit’s download control, record the document ID and preserve an access trail subject to the project’s privacy policy.
How do you turn generated text into a reliable PDF download?
The reported engineering obstacle was FPDF2 output. In some Python environments, the normal byte-stream behavior caused AttributeError failures. The fix is to avoid writing directly to a named file, normalize the return value and give Streamlit a byte sequence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

from io import BytesIO
import streamlit as st
from fpdf import FPDF
pdf = FPDF()
pdf.add_page()
pdf.set_font("Helvetica", size=11)
pdf.multi_cell(0, 7, contract_text)
raw = pdf.output()
# Some FPDF2 versions return bytearray; Streamlit expects bytes.
pdf_bytes = bytes(raw) if isinstance(raw, bytearray) else raw
st.download_button(
label="Download contract PDF",
data=pdf_bytes,
file_name="contract-draft.pdf",
mime="application/pdf",
)
The key details are the in-memory buffer, the explicit conversion from bytearray to bytes when necessary, and the application/pdf MIME type. Before release, test a short and a multi-page document, non-ASCII names, long clauses, page breaks and a zero-byte failure. Open the downloaded file independently rather than assuming that a successful button click means the PDF is valid.
For larger layouts, a BytesIO object can be used as the assembly buffer, provided the final value passed to the download control is the exact binary content. Avoid converting PDF bytes to a text string: character decoding can corrupt the file.
How does SHA-256 tamper checking work?
Lawyie hashes every generated document and exposes a unique digital-signature ID. SHA-256 maps the exact PDF bytes to a fixed-length digest. If even one byte changes, a correctly calculated digest should change, allowing a recipient to compare the file with the recorded value.
- Render the final PDF.
- Read the complete byte sequence without modification.
- Calculate SHA-256 and store the hexadecimal digest with the document ID, creation time and version metadata.
- Give the recipient the ID and a way to submit the file or digest for comparison.
- Recalculate SHA-256 on the retrieved file and report whether it matches.
This is a tamper-evident engineering control, not a substitute for a qualified witness, certificate authority or jurisdiction-specific electronic-signature statute. A matching hash says that the bytes are unchanged from the recorded version; it does not establish who authored, approved or signed them. Protect the database and signing records, because an attacker who can replace both the file and its stored digest can defeat a poorly secured implementation.

What privacy and legal safeguards should an African deployment include?
Contracts contain personal, financial and sometimes commercially privileged information. Define a retention period, restrict staff access, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and explain whether prompts or outputs are used to improve a model. Separate operational logs from document contents where possible, and provide deletion and export procedures that match the countries in which users reside.
Prompt templates should tell the model not to fabricate legislation, citations or government forms. The interface should display the selected jurisdiction on every review screen and warn users when a document type is outside the supported scope. Human review is especially important for employment, land, regulated lending, immigration, family law and cross-border transactions.
What went wrong at the beta launch, and how was it addressed?
A commenter reported that unauthenticated visitors initially encountered a Streamlit authentication redirect loop and that the page lacked a title and meta description. The author replied that the app visibility was changed to Public and that page configuration was updated for search and link previews. This is launch-history evidence, not a guarantee of current availability.
For a similar deployment, test the public URL in a private browser window, on a phone and with cookies disabled. Verify that signed-out users reach the intended landing page, that sign-in failures have a recovery path, and that private documents cannot be fetched by guessing an ID. Check the page title, description and social preview after every deployment because hosting settings can change independently of application code.
How should you evaluate an AI legal-document factory?

| Clause-risk detection | Does the system show the risky text and explain uncertainty? | Toxic-clause scanning is a stated product function; no external accuracy study is supplied. |
| Human legal review | Can a lawyer inspect, edit and approve the draft? | The design positions output as an access tool; a formal review network is not documented. |
| Pricing and access | What is included, and can users reach the service on low-bandwidth phones? | The beta is described as mobile-friendly; current pricing and availability are not established. |
What are the project’s limits?
The primary account is a first-person build article dated August 4, 2026, supplemented by a syndication record. It describes architecture and claimed experience, not an external security audit, a legal-efficacy study, an independent throughput benchmark or a validated market-size report. Treat model output, speed, availability and market figures accordingly.
The strongest reusable lesson is the boundary between convenience and authority. Groq can reduce waiting, Streamlit can make a Python workflow accessible, Supabase can provide managed storage, and SHA-256 can reveal changed bytes. None of those components determines whether a clause is enforceable in a particular African jurisdiction. That decision remains with qualified legal professionals and the people who sign the agreement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a SHA-256 hash prove who signed a contract?
No. It can show that the downloaded bytes match a previously recorded file, but it does not authenticate a person or prove consent. Identity verification, signing credentials, timestamps and any statutory electronic-signature requirements must be handled separately.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What should I do if the generated contract names the wrong country?
Stop before downloading and restart the intake with the correct jurisdiction explicitly selected. Review every governing-law, venue, currency and regulatory clause, then have local counsel check the revised draft because changing a country label alone may not adapt the substance.
How can I test a Streamlit legal-document app safely?
Use synthetic names, addresses and amounts during testing, and include malformed dates, very long text and non-Latin characters. Check signed-out access, direct-download URLs, PDF opening, hash verification and deletion behavior before entering real client data.
Does faster token generation make the contract legally better?
No. Latency only changes how quickly text is produced. Legal quality depends on jurisdiction-specific inputs, reliable source material, clear assumptions, review by a qualified professional and controlled updates to templates and prompts.
