The D882 is an NPN medium-power transistor that its manufacturer lists for audio power-amplifier applications, but that does not validate a particular one-transistor circuit or establish its output power. The available build example is only a creator-reported parts list, not a complete, independently verified schematic. Before wiring anything, identify the exact transistor and use its matching datasheet.
What is a D882 transistor?
D882 is the marking used for STMicroelectronics’ 2SD882, an NPN medium-power transistor. ST’s datasheet lists “Audio power amplifier” among its applications, alongside voltage regulation, relay driving, switching, and DC-DC conversion. That supports considering the device for audio work; it does not show that every simple circuit using it will work well or safely.
ST’s 2SD882 datasheet is Revision 3, dated October 2007. Its ratings are specified under particular engineering test conditions. They are not guaranteed performance figures for a hobby amplifier, and an absolute-maximum rating should not be treated as a recommended continuous operating point. Read the ST 2SD882 datasheet.
Can you build a simple audio amplifier from the available D882 example?
A Tech Ideas video published January 30, 2018 describes a build using two D882 transistors, one 220 kΩ resistor, one 10 µF capacitor, and one 3.7 V battery. Its description does not provide enough information to establish a complete circuit: it does not specify a full schematic or a speaker/load, and it reports no measured output or distortion. It is therefore a creator-reported recipe, not a validated build guide or evidence of a particular power output. See the Tech Ideas video description.

Because the topology and operating details are not established, component values beyond that reported recipe cannot responsibly be presented here as a recommended design. In particular, the listed parts alone do not tell you how the transistors are connected, how they are biased, what load is intended, or whether the circuit can operate within safe thermal limits. Do not wire the parts based only on the description.
Check the exact transistor and pinout before wiring
For ST’s 2SD882 in the SOT-32 (TO-126) package, the datasheet diagram identifies pin 1 as base, pin 2 as collector, and pin 3 as emitter; it also shows the collector connected to the mounting plane. Confirm the diagram against the datasheet for the actual manufacturer and package in hand. The marking “D882” by itself is not enough to guarantee the same lead arrangement across parts.

When assessing a specific circuit, check the manufacturer and full part number, package and lead layout, supply voltage, intended load, bias arrangement, and thermal conditions. A transistor’s current or power-dissipation maximum does not by itself establish what a particular circuit can deliver continuously.
