The example below follows NXP’s general BSP path; its desktop proof-of-concept uses a separate manifest, setup script, distro, and image.
Choose the BSP path and release
NXP publishes its i.MX Board Support Package as coordinated Yocto layers fetched with the repo utility and XML manifests. For Kirkstone, use the imx-linux-kirkstone branch and a manifest for the release you intend to build. NXP’s Kirkstone README lists examples including imx-5.15.71-2.2.2.xml, imx-5.15.71-2.2.1.xml, and imx-5.15.71-2.2.0.xml; do not mix manifests or layer branches from different release lines. Identify the machine and image
Match the exact board configuration
The Kirkstone general BSP README uses imx8mnevk as its EVK example. Machine names are release-specific: NXP’s current meta-imx listing names LPDDR4 and DDR4 EVK configurations imx8mn-lpddr4-evk and imx8mn-ddr4-evk. Those newer names are not proof they apply to every Kirkstone checkout. Confirm the machine configuration in the branch and manifest you actually fetch, and match it to the board’s memory variant.
If you have a custom carrier or a third-party module, do not assume the EVK configuration is suitable. Memory, hardware revision, device tree, and vendor integration can change the required machine and layers. Use the board or module maker’s BSP and porting guidance.

Choose an image recipe by feature scope
NXP documents three general BSP image recipes. Their broad feature scopes help narrow the choice; check the selected release’s README for exact contents and dependencies.

The general BSP setup example uses DISTRO=fsl-imx-xwayland. The recipe name determines which documented image target BitBake builds; select one that matches the product’s needs rather than treating the choices as interchangeable.

Prepare the host and build the general BSP image
Install the repo utility and the host packages required by the chosen release before syncing sources. NXP’s i.MX Linux User’s Guide recommends Ubuntu 20.04 or later and lists packages including Git, Python 3, GCC and build-essential, gawk, wget, diffstat, unzip, texinfo, chrpath, socat, cpio, xz-utils, and related Python and image libraries. Check the selected release’s current host requirements because supported distributions and dependencies can change. The i.MX Linux User’s Guide provides NXP’s setup guidance.
After installing the prerequisites, the following sequence uses the Kirkstone branch, the 2.2.2 manifest example, and the EVK machine and distro shown in NXP’s general BSP instructions:

Build the core image:
bitbake imx-image-coreTo build another documented general BSP image instead, substitute
imx-image-multimediaorimx-image-fullfor the BitBake target according to the required feature scope.
The manifest pins the coordinated source selection; it is not a license to combine arbitrary layer branches. Before building, verify that the chosen manifest and machine configuration exist in the checked-out release.

Keep the desktop proof-of-concept separate
NXP also documents a desktop proof-of-concept in meta-nxp-desktop. It is not the general BSP image path above: it uses a desktop manifest, setup script, distro, and recipe. Use it only when the target is specifically NXP’s desktop proof-of-concept.

Initialize and sync its manifest in a separate workspace:

Set up and build the desktop image using the documented values:

Consult the NXP desktop proof-of-concept README for that path’s requirements. Do not combine its setup script or image recipe with the general BSP recipe list.
Write the image to boot media
A successful BitBake build is not yet a booted board: the image must be transferred to a boot device, and the EVK’s boot switches must select that device. NXP’s getting-started guide covers SD and eMMC boot media, SD image transfer, and UUU flashing; its documented default UUU target is SD. Follow the procedure for your exact EVK revision and storage target in NXP’s i.MX 8M Nano EVK Getting Started Guide. The processor family includes up to four Cortex-A53 cores and one Cortex-M7 core, according to NXP’s i.MX 8M Nano product page; this is hardware context, not a performance guarantee for a Yocto build.
