Yes—you can turn an iRacing season PDF into a schedule explorer that displays each session in the reader’s own time zone. The reliable method is to extract structured event records, retain the source time zone and date exactly, convert each instant with an IANA time-zone database, and then render filters, calendar views, and shareable links in the browser.
That is the workflow identified by GridSherpa’s DEV Community project. The public listing confirms the PDF input and local-time explorer output, but it does not identify the parser, date-time package, daylight-saving strategy, tests, repository, or hosting arrangement. The implementation guidance below shows how to build the same kind of tool without pretending those undisclosed choices are known.
What does the GridSherpa project actually deliver?
The project is a DEV Community showcase by the author handle GridSherpa. Its title describes a conversion from an iRacing season PDF to an explorer that presents schedule times in the user’s local time zone. The DEV listing labels it with #showdev, #typescript, #webdev, and #gamedev; the DEV Show index carries the same title and a Sep 15 date marker.

| Item | What is publicly established |
|---|---|
| Author | GridSherpa |
| Input | An iRacing season PDF |
| Output | A schedule explorer showing times in the reader’s local time zone |
| Published context | TypeScript, web development, and game development |
| PDF parser | Not stated in the indexed metadata |
| Date-time library | Not stated in the indexed metadata |
| Daylight-saving handling | Not stated in the indexed metadata |
| Tests, repository, and hosting | Not stated in the indexed metadata |
That distinction matters. A schedule viewer can look correct while being wrong by an hour after a daylight-saving transition, or by a whole day when a converted time crosses midnight. The visible project concept is clear; the engineering details still need to be designed and verified independently.

Why does a season PDF need a time-zone layer?
A PDF usually records a human-readable wall-clock time, not a universal instant. “Tuesday 19:00” is incomplete until you know the season’s reference zone. A reader in London, Chicago, or Tokyo needs a different displayed clock value, and some events move to a different calendar date.
Use this mental model:
- Source date and time: the date and clock value printed in the schedule.
- Source zone: the named zone or offset that gives that value meaning.
- Instant: the unambiguous point on the UTC timeline.
- Viewer zone: the browser or user-selected IANA zone used for display.
Never add or subtract a fixed number of hours for an entire season. A zone such as America/New_York changes its UTC offset during daylight-saving transitions, while a fixed offset such as UTC-5 does not. The conversion must use the rules for the relevant year and date.
How should you model the conversion pipeline?
Keep parsing, normalization, conversion, and presentation separate. That makes a revised PDF easier to process and lets you test time-zone behavior without involving the user interface.

- Acquire and fingerprint the PDF. Store the season label, download date, file name, and a content hash. If the publisher replaces the file, the hash lets you distinguish a revised schedule from the previous one.
- Extract raw text or table cells. Preserve page number, row order, and the original text alongside any cleaned value. Those fields are invaluable when a row fails validation.
- Identify event boundaries. A record normally needs a series or track name, session or race label, date, start time, and source zone. Do not assume that a line break means a new event; PDFs often wrap long names across lines.
- Normalize labels. Trim repeated spaces, standardize month and weekday names, and retain the original event name for display. Store a separate stable identifier rather than deriving one from a mutable label alone.
- Resolve the source zone. Read it from the document’s heading, legend, or official schedule notes. If the PDF does not state a zone, mark the record as unresolved instead of silently selecting the machine’s zone.
- Convert to an instant. Interpret the local date and clock in the source zone, then convert that instant to UTC or another canonical representation.
- Render in the viewer’s zone. Detect the browser zone as a convenience, but offer an explicit selector. A user may be traveling, planning for a team, or comparing two regions.
- Validate before publishing. Reject impossible dates, missing times, duplicate identifiers, and rows whose conversion produces an unexpected date rollover without a warning.
Which PDF extraction approach is safest?
No single extraction method works for every schedule PDF. Choose based on whether the document has a text layer, how stable its table layout is, and how often the publisher revises it.

| Approach | Strength | Typical failure | Practical safeguard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text-layer extraction | Fast and inexpensive for digitally generated PDFs | Columns arrive in the wrong order or line wraps split records | Use page coordinates, row grouping, and fixture files from several pages |
| Table extraction | Preserves columns when borders and alignment are consistent | Merged cells and repeated headers create phantom rows | Remove repeated headers and validate each row against a schema |
| OCR | Works when pages are scanned images | Confuses characters such as 0/O, 1/I, or time separators | Flag low-confidence cells and require manual review for dates and times |
| Manual correction queue | Provides a safe fallback for exceptional pages | Does not scale if every row needs editing | Show the original page snippet and record each correction |
Keep the raw PDF and extracted intermediate data. If an event is challenged, you should be able to show the source page, the parsed value, and the conversion inputs rather than only the final local-time string.
How do you represent time zones correctly in TypeScript?
Use IANA zone identifiers such as America/Los_Angeles or Europe/Berlin, not labels such as “PST” that can be ambiguous. A record should carry both the source-zone date-time and the canonical instant.
type Session = {
id: string;
name: string;
sourceDate: string; // YYYY-MM-DD
sourceTime: string; // HH:mm
sourceZone: string; // IANA identifier
instantUtc: string; // ISO 8601, generated after zone resolution
sourcePage: number;
};
The conversion routine should reject an unknown zone, report ambiguous or nonexistent local times, and preserve the original fields for auditing. A nonexistent time can occur when clocks jump forward; an ambiguous time can occur when clocks move back. Your chosen date-time implementation must expose a deliberate policy for both cases, rather than silently choosing one.
For display, format the stored instant with the viewer’s selected zone and locale. Include the zone abbreviation or UTC offset next to the clock value, especially in a compact list where “7:00 PM” alone is easy to misread. The date should come from the converted instant, not from the source row, because a late-night session may become the next calendar day for the reader.

What should the explorer show?
The useful minimum is a searchable list that makes the conversion visible. Avoid hiding the source information behind a single localized string.
- Local date and time: the primary value, formatted for the selected zone.
- Zone indicator: the IANA zone name or current UTC offset, with a control to change it.
- Original schedule value: the source date, time, and zone for verification.
- Event context: series, track, session type, and any round or week label present in the PDF.
- Filters: series, track, session type, and date range.
- Views: list and calendar layouts, with a clear indication of events that cross midnight.
- Sharing: encode the selected zone and filters in the URL so a copied link opens the same view.
- Export: provide a standards-based calendar or CSV export only after validating that each event has a complete instant and duration.
Keep the browser’s detected zone as the initial choice, not as a permanent assumption. A visible “change time zone” action prevents confusion for international teams and for users planning a race while away from home.
Should conversion run in the browser or on a server?
Either architecture can work. The choice depends on how often the PDF changes, whether the source file can be publicly distributed, and how much processing you want to perform on each page load.

|---|---|---|
| Browser-only | Simple hosting, immediate local-zone formatting, and no per-user conversion service | PDF parsing increases bundle size and may expose source files; slow devices can struggle with OCR |
| Server preprocessing | Parse once, validate centrally, cache normalized data, and ship a small client | Requires a deployment pipeline and a process for detecting revised PDFs |
| Hybrid | Server extracts and validates; browser performs final display conversion and filtering | Needs a versioned data format and clear responsibility for time-zone rules |
For a stable seasonal document, preprocessing is usually easier to audit: a build step can fail when a new PDF changes its layout, rather than allowing malformed data into production. A browser can still perform the final conversion because the canonical instant is already known.

How do you handle revised or malformed PDFs?
Treat every new PDF as untrusted input, even when its filename looks familiar. Schedule publishers often insert an announcement page, alter column order, or revise a time without changing the season name.
Detecting changes
- Compare the content hash with the last accepted file.
- Record extraction warnings by page and row.
- Compare event identifiers to find additions, removals, and changed times.
- Display a data version or “updated” date in the explorer.
Protecting users from bad rows
- Do not publish a row with an unresolved source zone.
- Show a visible warning when a time is inferred from context rather than printed explicitly.
- Keep invalid rows in an internal review report instead of dropping them silently.
- Allow a corrected record to retain a link to its original page and text.
A parser that returns fewer rows without an error is more dangerous than one that stops the build. Make missing or duplicate records a failed validation condition when the expected structure is known.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What tests are essential for a local-time schedule viewer?
Test the conversion independently from PDF extraction, then test the complete pipeline with representative pages.
- Convert dates before, during, and after a daylight-saving transition in the source zone.
- Convert a late-evening source time that becomes the next day for at least one viewer zone.
- Convert a midnight event and verify that the date is not shifted by formatting.
- Exercise a zone that does not observe daylight saving alongside one that does.
- Pass an invalid zone, malformed date, missing time, and impossible calendar date; each should produce a clear error.
- Parse pages with wrapped names, repeated headers, merged cells, and a changed column order.
- Load a revised PDF and verify that changed events are highlighted in the data diff.
- Render the same instant in multiple locales and confirm that the zone remains visible.
Snapshot tests are useful for the parser’s normalized records, while property-style tests can check that converting an instant to a zone and back preserves the same instant. Keep fixtures small but include the awkward rows that caused previous failures.

How can you build a similar explorer when the original implementation is undisclosed?
Start with a narrow, verifiable slice instead of attempting a full season in one pass.
- Choose one official season PDF and manually transcribe a handful of rows, including a daylight-saving boundary and a date rollover.
- Define the normalized
Sessionschema and write conversion tests before connecting a parser. - Implement extraction for one page type, retaining raw text and page coordinates.
- Add validation and stop the build on unresolved zones or malformed rows.
- Generate a versioned JSON data file containing canonical instants and source metadata.
- Build the explorer against that JSON, with an explicit zone selector and visible source values.
- Expand extraction to every page, review warnings, and compare counts with the PDF.
- Add sharing and export only after list and calendar views agree on the same instants.
This approach gives you a trustworthy schedule even if the PDF layout changes later. It also keeps claims about the GridSherpa project separate from engineering decisions you make in your own implementation: the public listing confirms the concept, not the hidden tooling.
What can readers safely conclude about the published project?
Readers can conclude that GridSherpa demonstrated a TypeScript-oriented web project that takes an iRacing season PDF and presents schedule times in local time. They cannot determine from the indexed listing which parser, framework, date-time package, deployment target, test suite, or daylight-saving policy was used. Those details require the original post or source code and should not be filled in by assumption.

Can a PDF schedule be converted without knowing its original time zone?
Not reliably. You can display the printed wall time, but a correct conversion requires the source zone or offset; otherwise the safest behavior is to mark the event as unresolved and ask the publisher or user to supply it.
What happens when a converted iRacing event moves to the next day?
The explorer should derive the displayed date from the converted instant and show the new date prominently. Keeping the original PDF date beside it prevents users from mistaking a legitimate rollover for a parsing error.
Is OCR required for every iRacing season PDF?
No. Digitally generated PDFs often expose a text layer, while scanned pages may require OCR. A robust pipeline detects which pages lack usable text and sends only those pages through OCR with confidence checks.
Can I share a schedule in someone else’s time zone?
Yes, if the selected IANA zone is stored in the URL or export settings. The recipient should see that chosen zone rather than having it silently replaced by their browser’s detected zone.
