You can self-host ReskSafety as a central LLM firewall with Docker Compose, then route an existing OpenAI SDK client through its OpenAI-compatible /v1 endpoint. The firewall can authenticate callers, apply input and output policies, authorize tool calls, route requests to supported backends, and keep an audit trail. For evaluation, the official tutorial recommends SQLite; it recommends PostgreSQL for production.
What does an LLM firewall do, and when is a central gateway useful?
An LLM firewall sits between applications and model providers. Instead of relying only on each application to check prompts or tool calls correctly, a central enforcement point can apply shared policy to requests that pass through it. ReskSafety is described as a deployable firewall: it authenticates callers, applies input and output policies, authorizes tools, routes requests to providers, and records decisions in an audit trail.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis architecture is useful when several applications need consistent controls or when administrators want a central place to review policy hits and blocked content. It is different from a library-only approach: a library is imported into each application, while a gateway enforces policy in the request path for applications configured to use it. A gateway does not protect traffic from applications that bypass it, so routing and access configuration remain part of the deployment.
ReskSafety’s published feature set covers multiple parts of the request lifecycle. Input policies can identify or block risky content; output controls can apply token-level enforcement; role capabilities constrain actions; tool authorization can limit which tools are available; and audit records support review. These are complementary controls, not proof that every attack or information leak will be prevented.

What do you need before installing ReskSafety?
The official Docker tutorial lists Docker Compose v2, an OpenAI-compatible model backend, and at least 2 GB of RAM for a SQLite quick start. The backend may be an OpenAI API, an Ollama server, a vLLM server, or another OpenAI-compatible gateway. PostgreSQL is the recommended database choice for production rather than the SQLite evaluation profile.
- Docker Compose v2: used to start the application stack.
- A model backend: prepare the relevant provider credentials or the address of your local or compatible backend.
- At least 2 GB RAM: the tutorial’s stated minimum for the SQLite quick start; it is not a general production sizing recommendation.
- SQLite or PostgreSQL: SQLite is the quick-start default; PostgreSQL is recommended for production.
The tutorial was published on September 2, 2026. Its resource figure is specifically for the SQLite quick start; the documentation cited here does not establish a production sizing figure.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How do you start ReskSafety with Docker Compose?
Clone the official repository and launch its Compose stack. The commands below are the documented quick-start sequence:
-
Clone the project:
git clone https://github.com/Resk-Security/ReskSafety.git -
Change into the project directory:
cd ReskSafety -
Start the services in the background:
docker compose up -d
The Compose stack starts a FastAPI backend and React admin console. The full profile includes PostgreSQL, while the default evaluation profile uses SQLite. Follow the repository’s setup and configuration guidance for the backend and administrator console; the command sequence alone does not configure provider credentials or your organization’s access policy.
If the stack does not start, first confirm Docker Compose v2 is installed and that the commands are being run from the cloned project directory. The cited tutorial does not specify troubleshooting commands or a complete list of required environment variables, so use the repository’s current deployment instructions rather than guessing configuration keys.

ReskSafety describes roles using a 64-bit capability bitmask, with capabilities corresponding to actions such as tool calling, code generation, database access, email, and PII handling. Treat this as role-based access control (RBAC): a role is not simply a label, but a set of permitted capabilities. The documentation here does not provide the numeric bit values, so do not assign or infer them by hand; configure roles through the documented product interface or current project guidance.
How do you write a first policy?
Begin with one clear rule and test its effect before expanding coverage. The official tutorial illustrates a hard rule for the phrase DROP TABLE and a bias rule for internal salaries with a negative penalty.
Hard rules versus bias rules
A hard rule is intended to make a matching phrase ungeneratable when used with resk-logits. A bias rule instead lowers the likelihood of the matched phrase, which can be less disruptive than a hard block. These behaviors are documented product descriptions; actual outcomes should be validated with the model, policy, and deployment configuration you use.
Policies map a capability mask to phrases and enforcement modes. That means policy design should account for both what a phrase matches and which role or capabilities are affected. A phrase rule is not a substitute for deciding who may use a sensitive action. Keep rule changes versioned, exercise them against representative benign and adversarial prompts in staging, and watch for false positives after changes.
A practical validation loop
-
Choose a sensitive behavior to control and define the role or capability scope that should be affected.
-
Start with one documented phrase and enforcement mode rather than adding a broad collection of untested patterns.

How do you point an OpenAI client at the firewall?
Keep the OpenAI SDK, change its base_url to the firewall’s /v1 endpoint, and provide a ReskSafety token as the API key. For a locally reachable instance, the documented pattern is:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
base_url="http://localhost:8000/v1",
api_key="your-resksafety-token",
)
The firewall exposes POST /v1/chat/completions. Provider selection can be made using the documented X-Provider-Id header or through administrator configuration. The documented provider options include openai, vllm, ollama, and other OpenAI-compatible gateways.
In deployment, replace the local endpoint and example token with the values for your environment. Use a ReskSafety token rather than assuming a provider’s credential is interchangeable. Select the backend using the supported header or administrative configuration, and verify a request against the provider you intend to use before directing production traffic. ReskSafety’s product documentation also describes Anthropic-compatible and batch endpoints, but the tutorial’s OpenAI SDK example above applies to the OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
How should you configure input, output, and tool protections?
Do not treat prompt scanning as the whole security boundary. A static input filter can miss encoded instructions, escalation spread across multiple turns, or malicious instructions in retrieved content. Output moderation that runs only after generation may also be too late to prevent unsafe streamed tokens from reaching a user. Tool calls introduce another risk: a model response should not automatically grant permission to send an email, access a database, or perform another action.
Use controls at distinct points in the request path
- Input policies: inspect requests before they reach the model and apply the configured rules.
- Role capabilities: limit actions such as tool calling, code generation, database access, email, or PII handling to roles that need them.
- Tool authorization: use the documented tool authorization and MCP/tool allowlist controls to constrain agent actions.
- Output enforcement: use the documented token-level output controls where supported, rather than assuming a post-generation check prevents every unsafe token from being emitted.
- Audit trail: retain decisions and review relevant sessions, policy hits, tool calls, and blocked content.
These controls address different failure modes. They should be configured and tested together, with the application granting only the access it requires. A firewall can enforce only the requests and tool flows routed through and configured in it.

When should you add resk-llm or resk-logits?
Use the central firewall for shared, deployable enforcement; consider the related libraries when an application needs additional checks close to its own code or generation process. They serve different deployment roles and do not make the gateway unnecessary by default.
resk-llm for Python-side detection
The resk-llm project documents 11 specialized input-time detectors, editable YAML patterns, FastAPI middleware, an OpenAI wrapper, output validation, PII and canary checks, and multi-turn context support. A Python service can compose a SecurityPipeline with the detectors relevant to that application. Its examples include direct-injection and bypass detection.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →This can be useful when a service needs local detection before a request reaches the firewall or model, or when it needs middleware integrated into its own FastAPI request path. It also means detection configuration may exist at both application and gateway layers; document which layer owns each rule and test the combined behavior to avoid inconsistent policy.
resk-logits for generation-time filtering
resk-logits can add generation-time filtering for compatible local-model deployments. The tutorial’s example distinguishes hard phrase rules, intended to make a phrase ungeneratable, from bias penalties that reduce likelihood. Compatibility and behavior depend on the local model deployment, so validate the setup with the model you actually run rather than assuming it applies to every provider.
How do SQLite and PostgreSQL differ for this deployment?
The official setup positions SQLite as the evaluation quick start and PostgreSQL as the production recommendation. These are deployment choices with different operational implications, not interchangeable recommendations for every workload.
Recommended Free Tools

|---|---|---|
| Official role | Default evaluation profile | Recommended for production |
| Startup profile | Used by the default evaluation setup | Included in the full profile |
| Stated memory figure | At least 2 GB RAM for the quick start, according to the official tutorial | Not stated in the official tutorial |

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you monitor and maintain the firewall?
Use the admin console to review sessions, policy hits, tool calls, and blocked content. ReskSafety describes ReskPoints as a way to provide structured agent logging, and its firewall documentation describes export paths involving Datadog, Prometheus, and OpenTelemetry.
- Review policy outcomes: inspect hits and blocked content to identify false positives or gaps.
- Review tool activity: examine tool calls in context, especially when a role has access to database, email, or other consequential actions.
- Version policy changes: preserve a record of edits so operators can understand when enforcement behavior changed.
- Test before rollout: exercise representative benign and adversarial prompts in staging after rule changes.
- Retain the audit trail: keep decision records available for incident review under your organization’s retention practices.
Observability is only useful if someone reviews it and can act on what it shows. Decide who owns policy updates and incident review, and ensure the monitoring and audit data available in your deployment is sufficient for those responsibilities.

What are the main trade-offs of a centralized firewall?
A central gateway makes policy administration and visibility more consistent, but adds a service that applications depend on and must be operated. A library-only control can be closer to application logic, while a gateway can apply common request-path rules across clients configured to use it.

| Operational overhead | Requires deploying and maintaining the firewall service | Requires integrating and maintaining the library in each application |
| Latency and failure behavior | Not stated in the cited documentation | Not stated in the cited documentation |
There is no published benchmark in the cited material for latency, throughput, detection accuracy, or comparative failure behavior. Evaluate those properties in your own deployment before choosing an architecture for a latency-sensitive or availability-critical application. A hybrid design is also possible: local application checks can complement a central gateway, provided the duplicated controls are understood and tested.
What should you verify before production use?
Before relying on ReskSafety as a security boundary, verify the controls that matter in your own configuration rather than treating feature descriptions as a guarantee.
- Change the default administrator password and use named, least-privilege roles.
- Confirm the application routes requests to the firewall endpoint and selects the intended provider.
- Test that the relevant input, output, and tool rules trigger as expected for each role.
- Test benign prompts to measure the operational impact of policy hits and false positives.
- Check that audit records and monitoring exports support your incident-review needs.
- Use PostgreSQL for a production deployment in line with the official recommendation, and establish your own backup and operational procedures.
- Validate model compatibility for generation-time filtering if you use resk-logits.
ReskSafety provides a centralized enforcement point, but its effectiveness depends on correct routing, role design, policy quality, supported model behavior, and ongoing operations. Keep those dependencies explicit in your deployment plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can ReskSafety protect an application that sends requests directly to a model provider?
No central gateway can enforce policy on traffic that does not pass through it. Applications must be configured to use the firewall endpoint, and operators should account for any alternate routes in their architecture.
Does the firewall guarantee that prompt injection will be stopped?
No security control should be treated as a guarantee against every prompt-injection path. The documented layers address different risks, including input policies, tool authorization, output controls, and auditing, but the behavior needs validation against the application’s own prompts and retrieved content.
Does ReskSafety support models other than OpenAI?
The documented provider options include vLLM, Ollama, and other OpenAI-compatible gateways, with provider selection through an administrator setting or the documented header. The product documentation also describes Anthropic-compatible and batch endpoints.
Can I use resk-llm without deploying the central firewall?
resk-llm is a Python-side library with detectors and integrations, including FastAPI middleware and an OpenAI wrapper. The cited documentation does not establish that the library alone provides all the centralized routing, tool authorization, and audit functions described for ReskSafety.
