You can build a client-side hash calculator with Web Crypto for SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512, but not by passing "MD5" to crypto.subtle.digest(): MDN’s documented algorithm list does not include MD5. If your calculator must match a legacy MD5 checksum, route that option to a separate, independently verified JavaScript MD5 implementation. The example below hashes text or a selected file, renders digest bytes as lowercase hexadecimal, and keeps the two algorithm paths distinct.

What should a client-side hash calculator do?

A browser hash calculator takes input bytes, computes a digest with a selected algorithm, and displays the resulting bytes in a readable form—commonly lowercase hexadecimal. It can work locally without sending the text or file to a server, but it is not automatically a trustworthy security check: someone who can replace the page can also change the code or the checksum it displays.

The essential design choice is to separate the algorithms that Web Crypto documents from MD5. Use crypto.subtle.digest() for its documented SHA algorithms. If MD5 is necessary to compare against an existing checksum, use a separate MD5 implementation whose behavior you have verified. Do not try to make the API support MD5 by changing the algorithm string.

What this example supports

  • Text input encoded as UTF-8 bytes with TextEncoder.
  • A file chosen in the browser, read as raw bytes.
  • SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 through Web Crypto.
  • An optional MD5 implementation supplied through a deliberate adapter.
  • Lowercase, zero-padded hexadecimal output.

These are digest values, not encryption. A hash does not conceal the input and cannot be reversed into it by a decryption key.

Can I use Web Crypto API to generate an MD5 hash?

Not with the documented SubtleCrypto.digest() algorithms. MDN lists SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512; MD5 is absent. If the target format requires MD5, select a separate JavaScript implementation and validate it before relying on the result.

Web Crypto is asynchronous: digest() returns a Promise that resolves to an ArrayBuffer containing the digest. Its input can be an ArrayBuffer or a typed-array view. The digest bytes are not yet a hex string, so the calculator must convert them for display.

MD5 is sometimes required for compatibility with older file-checksum lists or systems. That compatibility need does not make it suitable for security-sensitive integrity decisions. Do not use this fast digest workflow for password storage; password hashing requires purpose-built, slow password-hashing functions.

How do I build the calculator interface?

Start with one input mode at a time, an algorithm selector, a calculate button, and an output area. Keeping text and file controls separate makes it clear which exact bytes are being hashed. The following minimal markup uses no external framework:

<label for="algorithm">Algorithm</label>n<select id="algorithm">n <option value="SHA-256">SHA-256</option>n <option value="SHA-384">SHA-384</option>n <option value="SHA-512">SHA-512</option>n <option value="SHA-1">SHA-1</option>n <option value="MD5">MD5 (separate implementation)</option>n</select>nn<label for="text-input">Text</label>n<textarea id="text-input"></textarea>nn<label for="file-input">Or choose a file</label>n<input id="file-input" type="file">nn<button id="calculate" type="button">Calculate hash</button>n<p id="status" role="status"></p>n<label for="result">Hexadecimal digest</label>n<textarea id="result" readonly></textarea>

The label on the MD5 option should make clear that it does not use Web Crypto. If your application has no verified MD5 implementation wired in, omit that option rather than presenting a nonfunctional or misleading choice.

For a real interface, also decide which input mode takes precedence. If a file is selected, the calculator should make that visible and hash the file rather than silently hashing text that remains in the textarea. Alternatively, disable or clear the inactive control when a user switches modes. The goal is to make the hashed input unambiguous, especially when a result is being compared with a checksum from another source.

Keep the result field read-only so the displayed digest cannot be mistaken for editable input. Use the status area for progress and errors: the operation is asynchronous, and the user should know when a calculation is running, completed, or failed. A clear action can reset the text, selected file, result, and status together.

How do I convert a Web Crypto hash to a hexadecimal string?

Convert each digest byte to a two-character hexadecimal pair, padding single-digit values with a leading zero, then join the pairs. This produces a lowercase string that can be copied and compared consistently.

function bytesToHex(buffer) {n  return Array.from(new Uint8Array(buffer), byte =>n    byte.toString(16).padStart(2, "0")n  ).join("");n}

The two-character padding matters: without it, a byte such as decimal 5 would render as 5 instead of 05, changing the expected representation. MDN also documents Uint8Array.toHex() as a newer option; the conversion above is a compatibility-oriented fallback.

Hexadecimal is only a representation of the digest bytes. It does not alter the digest algorithm or make the output more secure. For comparisons, use the complete string and be consistent about casing and encoding.

The conversion accepts the ArrayBuffer returned by digest() by viewing its bytes through Uint8Array. If you already have a typed-array view rather than a standalone buffer, be careful to convert the intended view’s bytes, not unrelated bytes elsewhere in a larger backing buffer. The API accepts typed views as input, but the output-formatting function should still be given exactly the digest bytes it is meant to display.

How do I hash text with Web Crypto?

Encode the JavaScript string into bytes first, then pass those bytes and a supported SHA algorithm to digest(). This example returns a lowercase hexadecimal SHA-256 digest:

async function sha256Text(text) {n  const bytes = new TextEncoder().encode(text);n  const digest = await crypto.subtle.digest("SHA-256", bytes);n  return bytesToHex(digest);n}

Text hashing depends on the bytes produced by the encoding. TextEncoder encodes the string as UTF-8, so another tool must use the same encoding and the same exact text to produce a matching result. A trailing newline, different whitespace, or a different Unicode character can change the digest even if the text looks similar.

That is why a text calculator should treat the textarea value as exact data rather than trimming it automatically. If the app removes leading spaces, normalizes line endings, or adds a newline before hashing, the digest is for the modified text and may not match a user’s intended input. If you choose to offer a normalization option, state clearly what it changes and make the default behavior predictable.

The same encoding rule applies to the separate MD5 route. The adapter should receive the UTF-8 bytes produced by TextEncoder, not an ambiguously interpreted JavaScript string, unless the chosen implementation explicitly documents the same encoding behavior. A string-to-byte mismatch is a common source of different results between tools.

async function sha256File(file) {n  const bytes = await file.arrayBuffer();n  const digest = await crypto.subtle.digest("SHA-256", bytes);n  return bytesToHex(digest);n}

A browser File represents the file’s bytes; unlike text input, it should not be passed through a text encoder. The output identifies the exact file contents, not its name or location. Two files with identical bytes produce the same digest under the same algorithm, while changing even one byte changes the result.

Hashing a file in the page avoids uploading its contents as part of this calculation. That is useful for local checks, but users should not infer that the page is trustworthy merely because the computation happens in their browser. A site that controls the page can also control the code that reads the file and reports the digest.

Give the user enough context to confirm what was selected, such as the file name, while remembering that the name is not part of the digest. If the selection is replaced, clear the previous result or mark it stale; otherwise, a user may associate a valid digest with the wrong file.

How do I connect both input modes and keep MD5 separate?

Use one function to dispatch between supported Web Crypto SHA algorithms and the separately injected MD5 adapter. The adapter below is intentionally an interface, not a package recommendation: the reviewed references do not establish a particular MD5 library or API. Its contract is that it accepts bytes and returns the complete hexadecimal MD5 digest for those bytes.

function bytesToHex(buffer) {n  return Array.from(new Uint8Array(buffer), byte =>n    byte.toString(16).padStart(2, "0")n  ).join("");n}nnasync function digestHex(bytes, algorithm, md5Hex) {n  if (algorithm === "MD5") {n    if (typeof md5Hex !== "function") {n      throw new Error("MD5 requires a separately configured implementation.");n    }n    return md5Hex(bytes);n  }nn  const supported = new Set(["SHA-1", "SHA-256", "SHA-384", "SHA-512"]);n  if (!supported.has(algorithm)) {n    throw new Error("Choose a supported SHA algorithm or configured MD5.");n  }nn  const digest = await crypto.subtle.digest(algorithm, bytes);n  return bytesToHex(digest);n}nnasync function calculate({ text, file, algorithm, md5Hex }) {n  if (file) {n    return digestHex(await file.arrayBuffer(), algorithm, md5Hex);n  }n  return digestHex(new TextEncoder().encode(text), algorithm, md5Hex);n}

In a real page, connect the button to this function, pass either the selected file or the text value, and display the returned string. The MD5 adapter should receive the same bytes that the SHA path would receive: raw file bytes for files, UTF-8 encoded bytes for text. Confirm the chosen implementation’s input format before adapting it; libraries may accept bytes, strings, or other representations, and those are not interchangeable without defined encoding rules.

Before shipping an MD5 adapter, test it against published known-answer vectors and verify its output encoding and casing. Also test both the text and file paths against an independent trusted tool or reference implementation. No particular third-party library is established here, so package choice, maintenance status, and specific call syntax must be checked separately.

Keep algorithm routing explicit rather than constructing an API call directly from arbitrary selector text. The allowlist in digestHex() prevents an unsupported choice from falling through to Web Crypto, and the MD5 branch fails clearly when its adapter is absent. This makes the interface contract visible in code: supported SHA choices use the browser API; MD5 uses a different implementation; any other value is an error.

Does crypto.subtle.digest support streaming large files?

No. MDN states: “Note that this API does not support streaming input: you must read the entire input into memory before passing it into the digest function.” In practice, file.arrayBuffer() loads the file contents into memory before hashing, so a very large file can require substantial memory.

Calling digest() repeatedly on chunks is not a substitute for incremental hashing. Each call hashes its own input independently; the API does not expose a continuation state that combines chunk digests into the same value as hashing the complete file once. For large files or streaming needs, investigate an incremental hashing implementation and verify its correctness, memory behavior, and support independently.

What to do when a file is too large

  • Do not assume that splitting it into chunks and combining their hashes reproduces the whole-file digest.
  • Choose an implementation designed for incremental hashing if the file cannot fit comfortably in memory.
  • Validate the implementation against known test vectors and a trusted reference for the complete input.
  • Consider running the work in a worker to keep the page responsive, while remembering that a worker does not remove the need to account for the input and implementation’s memory use.

Workers are available to SubtleCrypto, so moving computation off the main page thread is an option when responsiveness matters. That is a responsiveness measure, not a streaming feature: the full input requirement remains for digest(). The distinction matters when choosing an approach—using a worker may improve how the page behaves during a calculation, but it does not make an oversized buffer fit in memory.

What does a browser-side checksum prove?

A checksum is useful for detecting whether bytes match an independently trusted expected value, provided both the data and reference digest are trustworthy. A calculator running on the same page that distributes the file cannot, by itself, prove that the file is safe or unchanged: an attacker able to replace the page code may replace the downloaded file or alter the displayed checksum as well.

For a download check, obtain the expected digest through a trustworthy independent channel and compare the entire value using the same algorithm and encoding. MD5 should not be treated as a security-sensitive integrity guarantee. A digest calculator is also not a password-storage system: general-purpose fast digests are not a substitute for slow, purpose-built password hashing.

Web Crypto is restricted to secure contexts and is available in workers. If crypto.subtle is unavailable, check whether the page is running in a secure context and whether the browser environment supports the API; do not work around missing API support by silently changing algorithms.

Security purpose should determine what the calculator claims. A tool for comparing a file against a trusted checksum is different from an authentication mechanism, a malware verdict, or a password database. Avoid labels such as “secure” or “verified” unless the workflow actually establishes the trusted reference and threat model those words imply.

What should I test before publishing the calculator?

Test the byte-processing and failure paths, not just whether the button returns a string. A correct-looking hex value can still represent the wrong input if encoding or file selection behavior is unclear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Empty text: confirm it produces a digest for zero bytes rather than an error, if empty input is allowed.
  • Whitespace and Unicode: check that leading or trailing spaces, line breaks, and non-ASCII characters are included exactly as entered.
  • File versus text: verify a file is hashed as its raw bytes and is not decoded and re-encoded as text.
  • Algorithm selection: confirm each SHA option reaches Web Crypto and that MD5 cannot be selected without a configured adapter.
  • Output formatting: ensure every digest byte has two hex characters and that comparison uses the complete result.
  • Failure handling: show a useful message if the API is unavailable, file reading fails, or the MD5 adapter is missing or rejects its input.
  • Responsiveness: test realistic file sizes on the devices your readers use; the full-input memory requirement makes large-file behavior important.

For MD5, include published known-answer vectors in the test set and verify not only the digest value but also the exact byte encoding passed into the implementation. For SHA, compare representative text and file results with an independent trusted implementation. Test an unsupported algorithm value as well as the intended selector values, so unexpected inputs fail rather than being treated as valid algorithm names.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my SHA-256 result differ from another hash calculator?

The tools may be hashing different bytes: text encoding, line endings, whitespace, a trailing newline, or an accidental file/text conversion can change the input. Compare the exact input bytes and ensure both tools use SHA-256 and the same text encoding.

Can I compare uppercase and lowercase hexadecimal hashes?

Hexadecimal letters are case-insensitive as a representation, but standardizing on lowercase avoids avoidable mismatch reports. Normalize the representation before comparing, while still checking every character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a hash tell me whether a file is malicious?

No. A digest identifies bytes relative to a trusted reference; it does not determine whether those bytes are safe. Use reputable security scanning and provenance checks for malware concerns.

Can I hash a password in this calculator and save the result?

Do not use a general-purpose digest calculator for password storage. Password storage needs a dedicated slow password-hashing scheme with appropriate salts and parameters, rather than a fast digest such as SHA-256 or MD5.

Can I use Web Crypto API to generate an MD5 hash?

Not with the documented SubtleCrypto.digest() algorithms. MDN lists SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512, but not MD5. Use a separate MD5 implementation only if you need compatibility with an existing checksum, and verify it against known-answer vectors.

How do I hash a file in JavaScript in the browser?

Read the selected File with file.arrayBuffer(), pass the resulting bytes to crypto.subtle.digest("SHA-256", bytes), then convert the returned digest bytes to hexadecimal. This reads the whole file into memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I convert a Web Crypto hash to a hexadecimal string?

Wrap the returned ArrayBuffer in a Uint8Array, convert each byte with toString(16).padStart(2, "0"), and join the pairs. Padding preserves two hex characters per byte.

Does crypto.subtle.digest support streaming large files?

No. It does not accept streaming input; the full input must be in memory before calling digest(). Hashing separate chunks independently does not produce the same result as hashing the whole file. For large-file streaming, use and verify an incremental hashing implementation.

Why is crypto.subtle unavailable in my page?

SubtleCrypto is restricted to secure contexts. Check whether the page is running in a secure context and whether the browser environment provides the API; do not silently switch algorithms when it is unavailable.

The Bottom Line

Use crypto.subtle.digest() for SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512; it does not document MD5 and requires the full input in memory. Encode text consistently, hash files as raw bytes, and render the digest with two lowercase hex characters per byte. If legacy compatibility requires MD5, wire in a separate implementation and verify it independently. Treat the result as a checksum utility—not password storage or proof of security unless the expected value comes from a trustworthy independent source.
