A browser VPN extension protects traffic handled by that browser; a full VPN app can protect traffic from across the device. Choose an extension when you want browser-focused privacy and convenience. Choose an app when you also need to cover downloads, other browsers, messaging clients, background services, or system traffic—or want a device-wide block if the VPN connection drops. Neither option makes you anonymous: the provider, its privacy practices, and your configuration still matter.

What is the difference between a VPN extension and a VPN app?

The essential difference is scope. A browser extension acts as a proxy for browser traffic, while a VPN app can route internet traffic for the device. That distinction determines which activities are covered, what can leak outside the protected connection, and where a kill switch can intervene.

Mozilla describes a secure web proxy as protecting browser tasks and a VPN as protecting traffic wherever it is installed and enabled. Its guidance also explains that a VPN conceals your IP address and encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN provider. The exact behavior of an extension depends on its implementation and browser; do not assume every extension offers all the protections or controls of a provider’s app.

Question Browser VPN extension Full VPN app
What traffic can it cover? Traffic handled inside the supported browser, subject to browser behavior and extension configuration. Internet traffic entering and leaving the device when the app is connected and configured to cover it.
Does it cover other browsers or apps? No. Standalone messengers, other browsers, system activity, and other non-browser traffic can remain outside it. It can cover traffic from other apps and browsers, as well as system traffic.
What happens if protection drops? A browser kill switch, where offered, is limited to browser traffic. A system-wide kill switch can block the device’s network connection if the tunnel drops.
What can it change for websites? It can change the IP address websites see for traffic routed through the browser proxy. It can change the IP address seen for traffic routed through the VPN app.

Proton’s documentation draws the same distinction: its extension protects exclusively traffic inside the browser, while its apps protect internet traffic entering and leaving the device. Its list of traffic that may fall outside an extension includes system activity, BitTorrent clients, standalone messengers, and other browsers. Those details describe Proton’s products; check another provider’s documentation rather than treating one implementation as universal.

In practical terms, the word “VPN” in an extension’s name does not guarantee that it creates the same device-wide connection as a VPN app. Mozilla calls out the difference directly: “A proxy only protects what you do in your browser, whereas a VPN protects all your traffic.” Start with the traffic you want covered, not the product label or the fact that both options may display a different IP address.

Is a browser VPN enough for what I do?

It can be enough if the activity you want to protect happens entirely in the supported browser and you accept the extension’s browser-specific limits. If any important activity happens elsewhere, a browser extension alone is not whole-device protection.

Browser-only tasks

For ordinary web browsing in one browser, an extension can provide a browser-visible IP address supplied through the proxy. Mozilla says its Firefox feature proxies Firefox traffic so visited sites do not see the user’s usual IP address, while the network provider cannot see which servers Firefox connects to. That is a narrower outcome than concealing all device activity: traffic from other software is not included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think through how you actually use the web. Opening a website in the protected browser is within the intended scope; opening the same service in a separate desktop application may not be. If you use two browsers, an extension installed in one should not be assumed to cover the other. Likewise, an extension may be convenient if your privacy goal is limited to browser sessions on one supported browser, but it is not a blanket setting for the computer.

Downloads, messaging, and background activity

If your threat model includes a download client, a standalone messaging application, another browser, or system activity, an extension is not a substitute for an app that covers device traffic. The browser may be open while those other programs communicate independently. A browser extension cannot protect traffic simply because it is running on the same computer.

This scope difference matters for tasks that are easy to overlook. An operating system can perform system activity in the background, and a standalone messenger or download client can connect without sending its traffic through the browser. Proton specifically names system activity, BitTorrent clients, standalone messengers, and other browsers as examples outside its extension’s coverage. If one of those activities is important to your privacy goal, verify that the VPN app covers that traffic rather than relying on the browser extension.

Public Wi-Fi

For public Wi-Fi, decide whether you need to protect only browser activity or the device’s other internet connections too. An extension’s coverage remains limited to its browser. A full app is the more appropriate fit when you want system-wide coverage, especially if you also want a kill switch that can block the device’s connection after a VPN drop. The choice does not make you anonymous or eliminate the need to assess provider privacy practices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask what you will use while connected: only a browser, or also email software, a messenger, an app, and system services? If the latter traffic also needs to go through the VPN, an extension cannot provide that broad coverage. A full app can be a better match for this device-wide goal, provided it is connected and configured appropriately for your operating system.

Can a browser VPN extension leak traffic?

It can fail to cover some browser traffic in particular circumstances. Extensions depend on browser proxy behavior, settings, and startup timing, so an enabled extension is not proof that every browser request always follows the intended route.

Proton documents several limitations for its extension: browser-controlled protocols, such as embedded email, can bypass it; data may be sent before the extension finishes loading; experimental browser features may ignore proxy settings; and each extension instance uses a separate HTTPS connection that can be somewhat more exposed to fingerprinting than the full app. These are Proton’s documented limitations, not a guarantee that every extension behaves identically.

These examples point to several different failure modes. A protocol or feature can use a route the extension does not control; a request can happen before the extension is ready; or a browser setting can affect whether proxy settings are followed. They are reasons to check the provider’s instructions for your particular browser and setup, rather than assuming an extension’s on/off indicator establishes that every kind of browser activity is protected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to check before relying on one

  • Confirm that the provider supports the browser and operating system you actually use.
  • Read the provider’s explanation of which browser traffic the extension handles and which protocols or features may bypass it.
  • Check whether the extension has a browser kill switch and what it blocks. Do not interpret a browser-only control as a device-wide block.
  • Review browser DNS settings as well as the provider’s extension setup guidance.
  • Consider whether you start sensitive browser activity before the extension has loaded and connected.
  • Test the result for the specific browser and configuration you use rather than assuming the extension’s status indicator proves every request is covered.

The last check is a practical precaution, not a claim that a particular test can establish complete protection. The documented limitations mean browser settings and behavior matter alongside the extension itself.

Can a browser VPN stop DNS leaks?

Not automatically in every browser configuration. DNS routing can depend on browser settings, and a browser’s DNS-over-HTTPS setting may take priority over the resolver configured in a VPN application or extension.

Mozilla notes that Firefox DNS queries can be routed through a VPN extension, but Firefox’s DNS-over-HTTPS settings can take priority over the resolver configured in the VPN application. Proton’s setup guidance likewise warns that Firefox may need configuration to prevent DNS leakage when using its extension. This is why DNS should be treated as a separate configuration check, not inferred from a changed IP address or an extension showing as connected.

DNS is the process of looking up the address associated with a website name. In this comparison, the key point is not that every browser handles DNS the same way, but that the browser’s own settings can affect where its queries go. A browser extension and an app can therefore be connected while the browser’s DNS behavior still needs attention. Mozilla and Proton both specifically flag Firefox configuration as relevant to extension use.

If DNS behavior matters to you, read the provider’s instructions for your browser and check the browser’s own DNS settings. Do not apply a setting from one provider’s instructions to another extension without confirming that it is appropriate. The material available here does not establish one universal Firefox setting or a single DNS test procedure for every provider and browser version.

What does a kill switch protect?

A kill switch addresses a different problem from traffic coverage: it controls what happens if the VPN connection drops. Mozilla defines an app kill switch as blocking the device’s entire network connection when the VPN drops, helping prevent the local IP address from being exposed. Mozilla says its app kill switch is enabled by default on supported operating systems.

Scope is crucial. A device-level app kill switch can block the device’s network connection. A browser extension’s kill switch, if it has one, can only control or block browser traffic; other applications are outside the extension’s reach. NordVPN, for example, documents a browser kill switch among its extension controls, along with WebRTC leak protection, phishing and malicious-site protection, and exclusions. These are product-specific features, not standard capabilities of all extensions.

When assessing a kill switch, ask what it blocks, whether it applies to the whole device or only the browser, and whether the feature is available on your operating system. A control labelled “kill switch” does not by itself answer those questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In other words, a kill switch does not make a browser extension cover more applications. It limits what can connect if the protected connection is interrupted. If you need downloads, messengers, and other programs to stop communicating during a VPN drop, look for a full app’s system-wide kill switch and confirm its operating-system support. If your concern is only a browser session, an extension’s browser kill switch may be relevant, but its scope remains narrower.

Which should I choose for streaming, downloads, or multiple apps?

Match the protection to the software that carries the activity. A browser extension can apply to streaming in a supported browser, but it does not automatically cover a streaming app or another browser. A full VPN app is the better fit when you need coverage for several applications or device-wide traffic.

Use case More suitable starting point What to verify
Browsing in one supported browser Browser extension Browser support, proxy behavior, DNS configuration, and any browser-only kill switch.
Downloads or BitTorrent client Full VPN app if the client’s traffic needs protection That the app covers the client’s traffic; an extension does not cover it merely because the browser is protected.
Standalone messenger or another browser Full VPN app if those connections need protection That the app is connected and configured to cover device traffic.
Streaming in a browser Extension may fit if that browser is supported Whether the particular browser, service, provider, and connection work together.
Streaming in a standalone app Full VPN app if the app’s traffic needs protection Provider and service compatibility for that app; browser-extension behavior does not establish app compatibility.
Device-wide protection with drop-leak blocking Full VPN app with a system-wide kill switch Supported operating system, kill-switch scope, and whether it is enabled.

Streaming and geo-block behavior cannot be guaranteed from the format alone. Compatibility can vary by browser, app, service, and provider. Evaluate the exact combination you plan to use instead of assuming that a browser extension’s IP change will work for a separate application or every streaming service.

For example, someone who watches through a supported browser should check the extension’s browser coverage and the service’s compatibility with that provider. Someone who watches through a standalone streaming app should instead confirm that the VPN app supports the device and that the particular service works with it. The extension’s success in changing a browser-visible IP address does not establish that a separate app will use the same route or work the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are browser VPN extensions easier or faster?

An extension may be convenient when you only want to route browser activity, but convenience is not the same as broader protection. A full app requires device-level installation and configuration, while an extension is tied to a browser. The material available here does not provide comparable independent speed tests, so it does not support a general claim that extensions are faster or apps are slower.

Compatibility also differs by scope. An extension must support the browser in which you want to use it; an app’s availability depends on the operating system. Mozilla and Proton describe the extension/app distinction in terms of traffic coverage, not as a guarantee that one option performs better. Check supported browsers and operating systems, then test the actual service and setup important to you.

Convenience depends on your routine. If you want a proxy only for one browser, the extension keeps the choice tied to that browser. If you need to cover traffic from several applications, the app’s broader scope may be more useful even though it requires device-level setup. Neither form factor guarantees a particular speed, and the evidence does not provide a like-for-like performance figure for extensions versus apps.

Can I run a browser extension and VPN app at the same time?

Do not assume that running both improves protection. NordVPN warns that its extension and app can interfere with one another when used simultaneously. If both are needed for a specific setup, follow that provider’s instructions; otherwise, choose the configuration that matches the traffic you need to cover and confirm that it is working.

This is a compatibility question, not a general rule that every provider’s extension conflicts with every app. The documented warning is specific to NordVPN’s guidance. If your provider supports a combined setup, follow its instructions and check that both tools behave as intended. If you do not have a reason to use both, a single configuration matched to your coverage needs is easier to assess.

How should I evaluate provider privacy?

Neither format makes a person fully anonymous, and changing the IP address websites see is only one part of privacy. Mozilla explicitly says its Firefox proxy feature does not, by itself, make browsing fully anonymous. The provider still handles the connection, and privacy depends in part on its policies and on how the feature is configured.

Before installing an extension or app, read the provider’s privacy policy and understand what its service says about logging and data handling. Verify that the provider’s documentation describes the traffic scope, DNS behavior, kill-switch coverage, supported browsers or operating systems, and any exclusions relevant to your use. Do not treat a feature list as a substitute for the provider’s privacy terms, or assume that one provider’s extension limitations apply identically to another.

Mozilla’s Firefox Privacy Notice makes two limits explicit: the feature proxies Firefox traffic, not other applications, and it does not by itself make browsing fully anonymous. That is a useful way to frame either choice. A VPN changes how covered traffic is routed and can conceal an IP address from visited sites, but the format alone does not settle questions about what the provider logs or how the service handles data. Those questions require reading the provider’s own privacy information.

How to choose: a quick checklist

  1. List the traffic that matters. If it is only one supported browser, an extension may fit. Include downloads, standalone messaging, other browsers, and background activity if those need coverage.
  2. Choose the required scope. Use a browser proxy for browser-focused coverage; choose an app if you need protection across device traffic.
  3. Check leak controls separately. Review DNS and browser settings, extension startup behavior, and whether the product offers WebRTC or other browser-specific controls.
  4. Confirm drop behavior. Determine whether the kill switch blocks the browser or the whole device, and check operating-system support and default status.
  5. Check compatibility for the actual task. Verify the browser, operating system, app, and streaming service you intend to use; coverage and service behavior are not interchangeable.
  6. Review provider privacy terms. Understand the provider’s data-handling and logging statements, since neither an extension nor an app makes you fully anonymous.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a VPN extension hide my IP address from websites?

It can change the IP address websites see for traffic routed through its browser proxy. Mozilla’s Firefox privacy notice describes that behavior for Firefox, but it does not mean the extension changes the address used by other apps on the device.

Does a VPN extension protect BitTorrent traffic?

Not by itself. Proton specifically lists BitTorrent clients among the non-browser traffic its extension does not cover; use an app that protects the client’s traffic if that is part of your requirement.

Will a VPN extension work with every browser?

No. Extension availability and behavior are browser-specific, and support is not universal. Check the provider’s current supported-browser list and instructions for the exact browser you use.

Does using a VPN make me anonymous online?

No. Mozilla says its Firefox proxy feature does not by itself make browsing fully anonymous. A VPN changes how covered traffic is routed and can conceal an IP address from visited sites, but provider privacy practices and configuration still matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a browser VPN protect my whole computer?

No. A browser extension covers traffic handled inside its supported browser, subject to browser behavior and configuration. Other browsers, standalone apps, downloads, and system activity can remain outside it; a full VPN app is the device-wide option.

Can a browser VPN stop DNS leaks?

Not automatically in every setup. Mozilla says Firefox DNS queries can be routed through an extension, but Firefox DNS-over-HTTPS settings can take priority over a VPN resolver. Check the browser’s DNS settings and the provider’s instructions for your setup.

Do I need a full VPN for public Wi-Fi?

It depends on what you want to protect. An extension covers its browser; a full app is more appropriate if you also need to cover other apps and device traffic. A system-wide kill switch can block the device’s connection if the VPN drops, where supported.

Can I use a browser extension and VPN app together?

Sometimes, but do not assume the combination improves protection. NordVPN warns that its extension and app can interfere when used simultaneously. Follow your provider’s guidance and verify the setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a browser VPN extension work for streaming?

It may work for streaming in a supported browser, but compatibility varies by browser, service, and provider. A browser extension does not establish that a separate streaming app will use the same route or work with the service.

The Bottom Line

Choose a browser VPN extension for browser-focused privacy when you understand its DNS, startup, and browser-specific limits. Choose a full VPN app when you need to cover downloads, other browsers, messaging clients, background services, or the device as a whole—or want a system-wide kill switch. In either case, verify the provider’s coverage, configuration, compatibility, and privacy terms; neither format guarantees anonymity.
