Neither browser speech recognition nor cloud speech-to-text is the universal best choice for a voice interview app. A browser API may use on-device recognition or a remote engine, while a cloud service offers a documented interface and, in Google Cloud Speech-to-Text’s case, streaming interim results. Choose based on the browsers, devices, languages, privacy expectations, offline needs, and interaction your app must support—and test quality, latency, and cost with your own interview audio.

What “browser speech recognition” actually means

The Web Speech API includes speech recognition and speech synthesis. For interview transcription, the relevant interface is SpeechRecognition; SpeechSynthesis is for producing spoken output. The recognition API can use a service supplied by the user’s platform or perform recognition locally, as described in MDN’s Web Speech API documentation.

That distinction matters: using a browser API does not, by itself, mean audio stays on the device. MDN notes that some browsers, including Chrome, use a server-based recognition engine and send audio to a web service. That route does not work offline. Check the actual browser and platform behavior before promising users that their interview audio is processed locally. See MDN’s SpeechRecognition documentation source.

Local recognition and offline use

Where supported, on-device recognition can avoid sending audio to a recognition server and can work offline after the necessary language pack is downloaded and installed. MDN says a language pack requires a one-time download for each language; once installed, local recognition can be used offline. Availability is not universal: hardware, installed language resources, and recognition complexity can affect whether it works. Check support for the required recognition mode and language, and provide a fallback if it is unavailable. Details are in MDN’s guide to using the Web Speech API.

What a cloud speech service offers

A cloud service gives the app a service interface for sending audio to be recognized. Google Cloud Speech-to-Text documents synchronous, asynchronous, and streaming modes. Streaming is intended for real-time capture and can return interim recognition results while the interviewee is still speaking. That can support live captions or an interface that reacts to spoken answers; it also means the app must handle results that may change before a final result arrives. See Google Cloud’s Speech-to-Text overview.

Streaming has operational limits. Google’s quotas documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, lists a maximum of 25 KB of audio per streaming request and a maximum stream duration of five minutes. It also lists 300 concurrent streaming sessions per region and 3,000 streaming requests per minute across concurrent sessions. These are quota limits, may change, and are not performance comparisons with browser recognition. Design for chunking, stream renewal, quota errors, interruptions, and reconnection; check the current Google Cloud quotas and limits before implementation and again before release.

Compare the options against your interview requirements

Decision factor Browser recognition Cloud speech service
Where audio is processed Depends on the browser’s recognition implementation: it may be local or use a platform service. Verify the behavior for supported browsers. Audio is sent to the selected service for recognition. Review the service’s terms and your deployment’s data handling before making retention or privacy claims.
Offline operation Possible with supported on-device recognition after required language resources are installed; not guaranteed on every device or for every mode. Server-based recognition requires a network connection.
Device and language coverage Varies with browser, hardware, language-pack availability, and task complexity. Depends on the chosen provider and configuration; verify support for the languages and features your app needs.
Live transcription Check the target browser’s implementation and behavior for the specific interaction you need. Google Cloud streaming can return interim results during capture.
Limits and reliability work Recognition availability and behavior can vary across browser and platform combinations. Account for quotas, audio chunk size, stream duration, errors, and reconnect behavior.

Choose based on the interview experience you need

Consider browser recognition when

  • Your target users’ browsers and devices reliably support the required recognition mode and languages.
  • On-device processing or offline use is important and you have confirmed local recognition and language-pack availability on those devices.
  • Your interface can handle browser-specific behavior and provide an alternate path when recognition is missing or fails.

Consider a cloud service when

  • You need a documented service interface and a specific provider’s streaming workflow.
  • Live interim results are useful to the interview experience, and you can build around the service’s quotas and stream limits.
  • Your application can operate with network access and you have reviewed the provider and deployment’s data handling.

These are selection criteria, not a promise that one path will be more accurate, faster, or cheaper. The cited documentation does not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison for interview apps.

Validate the implementation before launch

  1. Define the target matrix. List the browsers, operating systems, devices, interview languages, and microphone conditions your audience is likely to use.
  2. Check recognition capability. For browser recognition, confirm that the API and required recognition mode are available. For local processing, also confirm the language pack is installed and usable.
  3. Build the capture flow. Request microphone access as part of the app’s audio-capture experience and explain what happens next. The Web Speech API documentation describes microphone or audio-track input, but does not establish identical engines or features across browsers.
  4. Test representative recordings. Evaluate your own interview speech for transcription quality and end-to-end delay across the target matrix. Compare the actual configurations you intend to ship; documentation alone does not establish a winner.
  5. Exercise failure paths. Test denied microphone access, unavailable recognition, missing language resources, lost connectivity, service errors, and interrupted or expired streaming sessions. Give the interviewer and interviewee a clear recovery path.
  6. Explain processing plainly. Tell users whether audio is processed locally or sent to a service, and what happens to audio and transcripts. The cited documentation does not establish retention or consent requirements for a particular provider, jurisdiction, or product deployment; verify the applicable terms and requirements for yours.
