Use your browser’s built-in feature when it does the job well enough. Install an extension when it adds a specific capability or a meaningfully better workflow—and only after checking who publishes it and what access it needs. The right choice depends on the task, browser, and permissions, not on a blanket rule that built-in is always safer or extensions are inherently risky.
How to decide whether you need an extension
Start with the task, then compare the added value with the access and upkeep an extension requires. Ask these questions in order:
- Does your browser already handle the task? Check its settings and built-in tools before searching for an add-on.
- What does the extension add? Look for a specific missing capability, not a vague promise of better privacy, security, or performance.
- What access does it need? Find out whether it can act only after you click, on selected sites, or automatically across all sites. Check separately whether it can run in private windows or access local files.
- Does the publisher make sense for the task? Review the publisher’s identity and update history, and consider whether the requested permissions fit the extension’s stated purpose.
- Will the benefit justify ongoing access and maintenance? Extensions need updates, and their permissions deserve another look if their behavior or access changes.
If a built-in feature meets your needs, it avoids adding another component that requires updates and permission review. If it falls short, an extension can be a reasonable choice when its function is clear and its access is proportionate.
What browsers already do—and what varies
Built-in capabilities differ by browser, platform, and version. For example, Microsoft lists tracking prevention, SmartScreen warnings for phishing sites and malicious downloads, Secure DNS, password management, and InPrivate browsing among Microsoft Edge features. Edge also supports extensions for added capabilities such as ad blocking, tracker blocking, script blocking, and cookie management. Microsoft’s Edge overview

Mozilla’s Firefox feature page lists built-in translation, password management and autofill, sync, private browsing, and fingerprinting protections, alongside a separate add-ons system. Mozilla’s Firefox features
These examples are not a promise that every browser offers the same tools, or that a feature works identically on desktop and mobile. Check your browser and device before installing an extension; something that once required an add-on may now be built in, while another browser may not offer the control you want.

Why extension permissions matter
An extension’s permissions determine what it can do. Chrome’s developer guidance recommends requesting only the permissions currently needed, rather than speculative access for possible future features, and describes optional permissions as an alternative. It also explains that activeTab can provide temporary access to the active tab after a user action for tasks that can work that way. Chrome extension permissions guidance
Edge gives users site-access choices: an extension can act when clicked, automatically on the current site, or automatically on all sites. Edge also has separate controls for InPrivate and file URL access. Microsoft’s instructions for changing extension site access

Prefer the narrowest access that still lets the extension do its job. An extension that needs to work only on a particular site may not need permission to read or change data on every site you visit.
What page access can mean
Microsoft warns that an extension permitted to interact with a page can access content there, including an autofilled password. It could also modify form fields or network requests and responses in your login context. Microsoft’s guidance on extension security This describes what that access can enable; it does not mean every extension reads passwords or is malicious. The practical question is whether the access is needed for the feature you want.

Private browsing does not automatically block an extension
In Edge, you can decide whether an extension may run in InPrivate. Chrome’s developer guidance says extensions do not run in incognito by default and tells developers to account for incognito data. Check the setting for each extension in your own browser rather than assuming private browsing disables it. Chrome extension permissions guidance Microsoft’s Edge site-access instructions

A browser’s password manager can be convenient and may sync passwords across signed-in devices. Microsoft’s Edge security guidance says the decision depends on your threat model, the sites involved, password strength and uniqueness, two-factor authentication, and control of synced data. It describes encryption protections for sync while noting that a compromised client device can expose passwords. It also says third-party products may address additional threat models, at the cost of complexity. Microsoft’s Edge password-manager security guidance

Neither “built in” nor “standalone” settles which manager is right for you. Compare how each handles sync and account recovery, how well you secure your devices and accounts, how autofill behaves, whether you need to move passwords between browsers, and what permissions a password-manager extension requests. In a workplace, include administrator controls and policy requirements.
Microsoft’s guidance says, “The simple and easy answer is: Yes, use the browser’s password manager,” then qualifies that answer by saying a complete response depends on understanding the threat model. Treat that as Microsoft’s guidance, not as a universal endorsement for every user or situation. Microsoft’s Edge password-manager security guidance
When built-in security is enough—and when an extension may help
Edge illustrates the kinds of protections a browser may already include: Microsoft describes SmartScreen as an early-warning system for phishing and malicious downloads, enhanced security mode as applying more conservative settings on unfamiliar sites, and tracking prevention as a built-in privacy control. Microsoft’s Edge overview
Check those built-in controls before adding an extension for a similar task. An extension may still be useful if it supplies a capability your browser lacks, but neither built-in protections nor add-ons should be treated as a guarantee that every threat will be caught. There is no basis here for ranking either option as faster, lighter on battery, or more reliable; those claims would require independent, controlled comparisons.

A practical checklist before you install
- Confirm the browser and device do not already offer a feature that meets your need.
- Identify the extension’s concrete benefit and check that its publisher is credible for the task.
- Read its permissions and choose click-to-run or selected-site access when that is enough.
- Allow access to private windows or local files only if the extension needs it for the task.
- Review updates and permissions again if the extension changes behavior or asks for broader access.
- Recheck compatibility and settings after browser updates; feature availability and controls can vary by browser, operating system, and version.
