The best way to watch British television depends on the programme you want. BBC iPlayer is the essential BBC catch-up and live service; ITVX, Channel 4 and 5 provide free, advertising-funded access to their own channels and box sets; and Freeview Play brings broadcaster apps together while UKTV Play adds Dave, Drama and Yesterday on demand. ITVX Premium is the main paid upgrade at £5.99 a month on ITV’s 2026 listing, adding ad-free on-demand viewing, mobile downloads where rights allow and access to BritBox UK.
There is one rule to settle before you install anything: a UK TV Licence is required for live television on any channel or service and for every BBC iPlayer programme, including on demand. The services, catalogues, prices, device support and programme rights change frequently, so treat the figures below as a guide to the current UK services rather than a permanent ranking.
What are the best British TV streaming services?
No single app carries every British programme. The most reliable setup is to use the broadcaster that owns a show, then add an aggregator for convenience. The table shows what each route is for.
| Service | Price and adverts | What you can watch | Live viewing | TV Licence rule | Typical access |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBC iPlayer | Free to use; BBC terms and availability apply | BBC catch-up, box sets and live BBC channels | Yes | Required for all iPlayer viewing, including on demand | Smart TVs, streaming players, consoles, mobile, tablet and web |
| ITVX | Free with adverts; ITVX Premium listed at £5.99/month in 2026 | ITV live channels, box sets, films, exclusives and (for paying subscribers) BritBox UK access | Yes | Required for live streams; the normal iPlayer exception does not apply to ITVX on-demand-only viewing | Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku/Now players, Samsung Smart TVs, PlayStation, Xbox, mobile and web |
| Channel 4 | Free with adverts | Channel 4, E4, Film4, More4 and related programming | Yes, where the current app offers the channel | Required for live viewing; on-demand-only viewing is not itself a licence trigger | Supported smart TVs, players, consoles, mobile, tablet and web |
| 5 / My5 | Free with adverts | Channel 5 family catch-up and live streams; Freeview lists 5, 5USA, 5STAR and 5SELECT among its app channels | Yes, for the channels and events offered in the current app | Required for live viewing; check the programme’s current rights | Supported smart TVs, players, consoles, mobile, tablet and web |
| Freeview Play and UKTV Play | Free with adverts where applicable | Freeview Play links major broadcaster apps; UKTV Play supplies Dave, Drama and Yesterday on demand | Freeview’s channel line-up depends on region and device; UKTV Play is primarily on demand | Required for any live programme; on-demand rules depend on the app | Freeview Play devices plus linked apps on mobile, tablet, PC and laptop |
“Best” therefore means best for a particular catalogue. A BBC drama belongs on iPlayer, an ITV reality series on ITVX, a Channel 4 comedy on Channel 4, and a Channel 5 factual programme on 5. Installing all four free broadcaster apps, then using Freeview Play or UKTV Play as a directory, gives broader coverage than relying on one subscription.

Do you need a TV Licence to stream British television?
Yes, in two situations: when you watch or record a programme as it is broadcast on any channel or service, and whenever you watch an on-demand BBC programme on iPlayer. The UK Government’s guidance covers a television, computer, phone, tablet or any other device, so changing screens does not remove the requirement.
- BBC iPlayer: a licence is required for every programme, live or catch-up.
- Live streams on ITVX, Channel 4, 5/My5, Freeview or another service: a licence is required because the programme is being watched as broadcast.
- On-demand-only viewing on services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime Video: this does not by itself require a licence, provided you are not watching a live stream and are not using BBC iPlayer.
If you switch from a box set to a live channel, the legal position changes at that moment. Household licensing arrangements and exemptions are handled by the licensing authority, so check the current GOV.UK guidance for your circumstances rather than assuming that a streaming-only household is exempt.
What does BBC iPlayer offer?
BBC iPlayer is the core route for BBC programmes: it combines catch-up viewing, box sets and live BBC channels in one service. It is the only major UK streaming app in this comparison that requires a TV Licence even when you watch entirely on demand.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- You want a BBC programme shortly after its television broadcast.
- You need BBC live channels or live events in the same app.
- You want BBC box sets rather than a general-purpose subscription catalogue.
What to check
Programme windows are not permanent. A series can disappear when the BBC’s licence for a programme ends, and live-event rights can be restricted. Sign in on the device you use, search by programme title, and look for the expiry information shown on the programme page before planning a long viewing project.
Devices
iPlayer is available through supported smart-TV apps, streaming players, game consoles, mobile and tablet apps, and a web browser. On an older television, a compatible streaming player can provide the app without replacing the screen. Keep the player’s operating system and the iPlayer app updated; older models may lose support even when newer televisions in the same brand range continue to work.
Is ITVX worth using, and is BritBox included?
ITVX is ITV’s free, ad-supported service for live channels, box sets, films and exclusives. ITV describes it as a service where viewers can stream new programme exclusives with adverts for free. Paying subscribers receive BritBox UK access under ITV’s current offer, making ITVX Premium the relevant option when you want ITV programmes and a broader British catalogue in one account.
Free ITVX
The free tier is the starting point for ITV broadcasts and on-demand episodes. It is advertising-funded, so expect commercial breaks and a catalogue shaped by current rights. You can watch in a browser or through supported television, player, console and mobile apps.

ITVX Premium price and features
ITV’s 2026 listing shows ITVX Premium at £5.99 per month. The listed benefits include ad-free on-demand viewing, mobile downloads subject to licensing restrictions, and BritBox UK access for paying subscribers. The price is a recurring monthly figure; the page does not establish an equivalent annual price here, so do not assume an annual discount.
How large is the ITVX catalogue?
Catalogue totals are volatile marketing figures rather than a fixed inventory. ITV help guidance in 2025 referred to 15,000 hours of content, while the 2026 Premium page listed 26,000 hours of shows and films. The different totals should not be treated as a measured year-on-year increase: they may reflect different dates, tiers or counting methods. Search the exact programme you want and check its availability instead.
ITVX device support
ITV’s official device list includes Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku and Now players, Samsung Smart TVs, PlayStation and Xbox, as well as mobile and web access. If your television lacks the app, an inexpensive compatible player can add it through an HDMI input. Sign in only through the official app or website, and verify that your player’s region is set to the UK.
What can you watch on Channel 4 streaming?
Channel 4’s service is a free, advertising-supported route to Channel 4, E4, Film4, More4 and related programming. It is the natural destination for Channel 4 originals and for the network’s connected channels when the current app provides a live feed.
Live versus on demand
Use the live section when you want the channel schedule, including programmes that are not yet available as catch-up. Use search or the programme pages for box sets and films. The presence of a channel or film can change with rights and with the version of the app installed on your device, so check the current listing rather than relying on an old channel guide.
Advertising and account expectations
Free viewing is funded by advertising. The app may ask you to create or use an account so it can apply age controls, continue playback across devices or tailor the catalogue to your region. Those account prompts do not turn the service into a paid subscription.
What is available on 5 or My5?
5/My5 provides free catch-up and live access to the Channel 5 family. It is the first place to look for Channel 5 programmes, while Freeview’s app listings identify 5, 5USA, 5STAR and 5SELECT among the channels that may be available through the platform.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Channel coverage
The exact live line-up, episode window and advertising treatment can differ by app version and rights agreement. If a programme is missing from catch-up, search the channel’s schedule and the programme page; a live broadcast may be available even when an on-demand episode has expired, or vice versa.

Using My5 on a television
Install the current app from your television’s app store or use a supported streaming player. On a shared household television, set a PIN or profile controls where offered, particularly for programmes with age restrictions. A software update can restore playback after a device has stopped loading the catalogue.
How do Freeview Play and UKTV Play differ?
Freeview Play is primarily a gateway: it brings major broadcaster apps together so you can find programmes without opening each service separately. UKTV Play is a content service in its own right, supplying Dave, Drama and Yesterday programmes on demand.
Freeview Play
Freeview says channel availability can vary by TV region. That means two households with similar televisions may see different live channels or programme prompts. Freeview’s device guidance also covers mobile, tablet, PC and laptop access through linked broadcaster apps, so it is useful as a navigation layer even when you do not use a Freeview Play television.
UKTV Play
UKTV Play is useful for comedy, factual and drama repeats from Dave, Drama and Yesterday. It complements rather than replaces the broadcaster apps: a programme listed in UKTV Play may not be present on iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 or My5, and its availability can change when UKTV’s rights change.
When to choose the combined route
Choose Freeview Play if your priority is a single programme guide and quick links to several catch-up services. Add UKTV Play if you regularly watch Dave, Drama or Yesterday content. Neither option removes the TV Licence requirement for live viewing.
Which service is best for live television?
For a live broadcast, start with the channel owner: iPlayer for BBC channels, ITVX for ITV channels, Channel 4’s service for Channel 4 family channels, and 5/My5 for the Channel 5 family. Freeview Play can be faster when you are unsure which app carries a channel, but its available line-up depends on your region and device.

- BBC events and channels: BBC iPlayer.
- ITV programmes and ITV exclusives: ITVX.
- Channel 4, E4, Film4 or More4: Channel 4 streaming.
- Channel 5, 5USA, 5STAR or 5SELECT: 5/My5 where the current app offers the feed.
- Several services in one guide: Freeview Play, with UKTV Play for its own on-demand catalogue.
All of these live routes fall under the TV Licence rule, regardless of whether the app itself is free.
Which service has the deepest catalogue?
There is no stable, apples-to-apples winner because each service measures and rotates content differently. ITVX publishes the only catalogue figures in the current information: 15,000 hours in 2025 help guidance and 26,000 hours on the 2026 Premium page. Those figures are useful scale indicators, not guarantees that a particular series is available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor practical selection, catalogue ownership matters more than a headline hour count. Search iPlayer for BBC originals, ITVX for ITV originals and BritBox UK material included with Premium, Channel 4 for its network productions, 5/My5 for Channel 5 commissions, and UKTV Play for Dave, Drama and Yesterday shows. Rights windows can make a highly promoted programme unavailable outside its release period.
How do you install these services on a smart TV or older television?
Use the following process for each service. Menu names differ slightly by television manufacturer, but the sequence is consistent.
- Check the connection. Connect the television or streaming player to broadband and install any pending system update. Streaming quality depends on the connection shared by every device in the home.
- Open the app store. On a smart TV, open the manufacturer’s app store; on a player or console, open its app marketplace. Search for the exact service name, such as “BBC iPlayer” or “ITVX”.
- Install the official app. Check the publisher name and icon before installing. Avoid unofficial apps that imitate a broadcaster’s branding.
- Sign in or create an account. Follow the on-screen code or email process. Keep a note of which email address is linked to each service, especially if several household members use the television.
- Set location and controls. Use the UK region where the device asks for a country, and configure subtitles, audio description, age controls and autoplay to suit the household.
- Test both playback modes. Open one live stream and one on-demand programme. This confirms that the app, account and licence obligations are understood before an important event.
For an older television without the required apps, ITVX explicitly supports Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku/Now players and game consoles, among other devices. A compatible streaming player connected by HDMI is therefore a practical upgrade. Freeview’s guidance also supports viewing through mobile, tablet, PC and laptop apps when the television itself cannot run them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is a programme unavailable or different on another device?
Availability is controlled by programme rights, territory, device certification and the app version. A film can appear on a phone but not on an older television, or a live channel can be available in one UK region and absent in another.

- The licence window has expired or has not started yet.
- The app is showing a different regional catalogue.
- Your television or player no longer meets the service’s software requirements.
- The programme is live-only, on-demand-only or restricted to a paid tier.
- Temporary service maintenance or a household broadband problem is preventing playback.
Recovery steps
- Search the programme title in the broadcaster’s own app rather than through a third-party guide.
- Check the programme page for an expiry date, live-only label or Premium requirement.
- Update the device software and the app, then restart the device and broadband router.
- Sign out and back in if the catalogue is empty or the account shows the wrong region.
- Try the service in a current web browser or on a mobile device. If it works there, the television model may be outside the supported-device list.
Do not assume that a virtual private network will supply rights that the service has not licensed in your location. UK availability and programme rights should be checked title by title.

Can you watch these services outside the UK?
This comparison is UK-focused. Broadcasters negotiate rights by territory, so a service that works in the UK may restrict playback abroad, replace programmes or require a separate international product. The same applies to individual films, sports events and imported series. Check the service’s current terms and the programme page for the country where you will watch; do not treat a UK account or a UK device as proof of international availability.
How should you choose between free streaming and ITVX Premium?
Start free unless you have a specific reason to pay. A paid ITVX Premium subscription is most relevant when you want ad-free ITVX on-demand viewing, mobile downloads where the rights permit them, and BritBox UK access in the same subscription.
- Choose free services only if you mainly watch current broadcaster programmes and accept adverts.
- Add ITVX Premium if recurring ITVX viewing, fewer on-demand adverts, downloads or BritBox UK access justify £5.99 per month on the 2026 listing.
- Use Freeview Play if finding programmes across several broadcaster apps is more important than having one paid catalogue.
- Add UKTV Play when Dave, Drama or Yesterday content is a regular part of your viewing.
Recheck prices, device support and catalogue claims immediately before subscribing. The £5.99 figure and ITVX hour totals are time-specific listings, not guarantees that the price or inventory will remain unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch BBC iPlayer without creating an account?
An account is normally used to access iPlayer features and personalise viewing, but account creation and the TV Licence requirement are separate issues. Signing in does not replace the licence, and having a licence does not guarantee that every programme remains available.
Does ITVX Premium remove adverts from live ITV channels?
The listed Premium benefit is ad-free on-demand viewing. The information available here does not establish that live streams are advert-free, so check the current subscription description for the exact treatment of the live channels you plan to watch.
Why does Freeview Play show different channels at different addresses?
Freeview states that channel availability can vary by TV region. Your device may therefore show a different live line-up from a television in another part of the UK even when both use the same Freeview Play software.
Can I download programmes from every British streaming app?
Offline downloads are not universal. ITVX Premium lists mobile downloads subject to licensing restrictions; other services and individual titles can have different rules, so look for a download control on the programme page before travelling.
What should I do if a streaming app disappears from my smart TV?
Check the television’s operating-system version and the service’s supported-device list, then update both the TV and app. If the model is no longer certified, use a supported HDMI streaming player or watch through a current mobile or web app instead.
