Leonardo da Vinci’s sawmill design uses water power to move a saw blade up and down while a linked mechanism steadily feeds a log toward it. A 2010 museum model makes that system tangible, while a later modern replica attempt shows how difficult it can be to build and tune the mechanism. The drawing, the museum model, and the replica are distinct artifacts—not interchangeable evidence of how a single historical machine performed.

How does Leonardo da Vinci’s hydraulic saw work?

Museo Leonardiano attributes the design to Leonardo and identifies its source as folio 1078 recto of the Codex Atlanticus. The intended job was to cut large tree trunks into planks while reducing manual labor. The mechanism combines a water-powered saw with a feed system that keeps the trunk moving toward the blade.

  1. Water turns the paddlewheel. A channel directs water to the wheel, providing the machine’s rotary input.
  2. A crankshaft drives the saw. A connected crank mechanism converts the wheel’s rotation into the blade’s vertical, reciprocating stroke.
  3. A synchronized pawl advances the log. As the blade moves, a pawl engages a ratchet. The turning wheel winds rope around a drum connected to the log trolley, gradually drawing the trunk toward the blade and maintaining contact.

The important idea is integration: the same water-driven motion powers the cutting stroke and coordinates the slow feed of the workpiece. The design is therefore a hydraulic saw, not a hand-powered saw or a modern industrial sawmill.

What is the difference between the drawing and the museum model?

The drawing is the historical design attributed to Leonardo; the physical machine at Museo Leonardiano is a later reconstruction. The museum says its model was made in 2010 by the University of Florence engineering department and Etruria Musei. Its object record specifies varnished wood and iron, dimensions of 98 × 87 × 61 cm (width × height × depth), and display at Counts Guidi’s castle within Museo Leonardiano.

How To Make Everything replica Modern build attempt covered in 2023 Hackaday’s report on that attempt A separate build and its reported operating difficulties; it is not the museum model or an authoritative reconstruction of every historical detail.

The museum’s object record describes the later model, not a surviving Leonardo-built machine. Its dimensions and materials should not be mistaken for specifications of the original design.

What happened when a modern replica was built?

In a September 11, 2023 feature, Hackaday’s Al Williams covered a How To Make Everything replica attempt. The report describes five main pieces: support, waterwheel, saw, crank mechanism, and sled. It notes that the waterwheel presented difficulties and that the build ran more slowly than expected. Those are observations about this particular recreation, not proof that Leonardo’s design could not work under other construction or operating conditions.

  • EDUCATIONAL STEM LEARNING EXPERIENCE Explore concepts in engineering, architecture, physics, and history while building. Great for students, hobbyists, makers, homeschool projects, classroom activities, and anyone interested in mechanical design.
  • APPROXIMATELY 1 HOUR BUILD TIME Designed to provide an immersive yet manageable project experience. The completed bridge makes an impressive display piece and conversation starter once assembled.
  • HIGH-QUALITY WOODEN MODEL KIT – AGE 14+
  • Made from durable precision-cut wood components with detailed illustrated instructions. A thoughtful gift idea for teens, adults, engineers, history enthusiasts, and STEM lovers.

A working recreation has to get more than the basic idea right: the wheel, crank, blade, ratchet, rope drum, and trolley must work together. The reported difficulty is a useful reminder that an integrated mechanism can be challenging to reproduce and tune. The feature does not establish a definitive historical output, speed, or efficiency for Leonardo’s proposed machine.

What the evidence does—and does not—tell us

  • Established: Museo Leonardiano attributes the design to Leonardo, identifies its Codex Atlanticus folio, explains the waterwheel-and-crank action, and describes the linked pawl-and-ratchet feed.
  • Established: The museum’s physical model is a 2010 reconstruction with recorded materials, dimensions, and display location.
  • Limited to one modern attempt: Hackaday reports practical problems and slower-than-expected operation in the How To Make Everything build.
  • Not established: A verified production rate, cutting speed, efficiency figure, or definitive verdict on whether the historical design would work under different build and operating conditions.
