Clouding on the CRT’s protective screen may be a physical surface or bonding problem, while a missing cursor or corrupted characters calls for electrical diagnosis. Lear-Siegler’s maintenance manual provides the model-specific troubleshooting sequence; its warning about discharging CRT anode voltage makes monitor work a job for someone competent in high-voltage service.
Start by separating cosmetic clouding from a display fault
A cloudy-looking ADM-3A screen does not automatically mean the CRT has failed. In one restoration, David of Usagi Electric described the CRT face as having “cataracts”; he warmed the tube assembly, removed the integral protective screen, cleaned it and reinstalled it. He credited the removal to hot Texas weather, which is an account of that restoration—not a validated temperature-based procedure for other terminals. Read the restoration account.
Another repair report describes cloudy bonding material between the CRT and front lens, along with brown material that leaked onto the keyboard and was associated with corrosion on its connections. That report describes removing the lens and repairing the affected keyboard. It documents a possible failure mode, not proof that every cloudy ADM-3A has the same cause. See the ADM-3A repair account.
Before disturbing the monitor, inspect what you can without opening the CRT assembly. Distinguish a visible cloud on or behind the protective screen from symptoms such as a missing cursor, unstable image, or absent characters. Those electronic symptoms need diagnosis through the manual’s checks, not a cosmetic-screen remedy.

Use the manual’s fault-isolation process
The archived Lear-Siegler ADM-3A maintenance manual advises establishing the failure history and conditions first: what the terminal was doing, which functions still work, and whether the fault can be reproduced. The sequence then narrows the problem to a module and, with the service information and diagrams, to a component. After a repair, retest in the mode in which the failure occurred; a terminal that works in a different mode has not yet demonstrated that the original fault is fixed.
- Record the failure conditions. Note the operating mode and the exact symptom, including whether it is constant or intermittent.
- Check basic causes and working functions. Establish which parts of the terminal operate before assuming a specific board or component has failed.
- Isolate the failing module. Use the manual’s troubleshooting information and diagrams to narrow the search before replacing parts.
- Test the repair under the original conditions. Recreate the mode in which the fault appeared and confirm the symptom is gone.
If the cursor is missing, follow the display checks in order
For a cursor that does not appear after warm-up, the manual’s diagnostic sequence progresses from basic operating checks to display circuitry. A missing cursor is a symptom, not a diagnosis; do not jump directly to the CRT or a single suspected chip.

- Features the eye-catching design 'Switch Off Computer Terminal'
- Quality aluminum build with retro surface, fade resistant for lasting color
- Standard 12x8 inch dimensions suit most wall layouts and tabletops
- Comes pre-drilled for simple mounting with nails or screws
- Suits office and any room spaces, a practical gift for homeowners
- Check the power-supply voltages and the intensity and contrast controls.
- Check clock operation and the display counters.
- Check monitor sweep drive.
- Check the monitor video and drive circuits.
These checks involve electrical diagnosis around a CRT monitor. The maintenance manual states that the CRT anode voltage must be discharged to ground before removing any monitor subassembly or the CRT. If you are not qualified to perform CRT high-voltage service, stop before opening or removing monitor parts and use a competent specialist.
Treat keyboard and logic symptoms as clues, not verdicts
Keyboard corrosion or unreliable keys
The 2011 repair account links leaked adhesive material with corrosion on keyboard connections and describes removing and testing switches before proceeding to logic-board troubleshooting. If you find residue or corrosion, document its location and the connections affected before cleaning or removing components; a visible symptom can coexist with other faults.

Wrong, missing, or stray characters
A separate ADM-3A RAM repair note identifies wrong characters, missing characters, or stray characters in blank screen areas as possible signs of character-RAM trouble. It describes two banks of 2102 RAM used for display-character storage, with rows associated with even and odd display lines. These patterns are useful clues for narrowing diagnosis, but they do not uniquely identify a failed RAM chip. Read the character-RAM repair note.
Components disturbed during service
The 2011 account also describes unexpected behavior caused during one repair stage by an incorrectly positioned IC. If a board or chip has been disturbed, document its original position and carefully check orientation and seating before powering the terminal again. That is a practical check, not a substitute for tracing the fault against the schematic.

- For Indoor or Sheltered Outdoor Display: Rust-resistant aluminum is well suited to bathrooms, kitchens, garages, porches, patios, and other areas exposed to humidity. It offers greater corrosion resistance than ordinary tinplate signs.
- UV-Cured Color That Lasts: The direct-print process creates clear artwork, rich tones, and excellent adhesion. Cured inks help protect the image from fading, surface scratches, peeling, cracking, and normal environmental exposure.
- Balanced Wall-Friendly Size: At 8 x 12 inches, this sign is large enough to catch the eye while remaining easy to fit into galleries, narrow walls, doors, fences, and small decorative areas.
- Quick Corner Mounting: Four pre-drilled holes provide flexible hanging options. Attach the sign using screws, nails, cord, or a suitable adhesive method for the chosen surface. Mounting supplies are not included.
- Refined Aluminum Appearance: A smooth metallic surface gives the design more dimension than a basic flat tin sign. It complements man caves, farmhouse rooms, workshops, bars, offices, patios, and makes a thoughtful decor gift.
Replace parts only when diagnosis supports it
Repair accounts show differing approaches rather than a universal parts list. One restorer replaced electrolytic capacitors on the CRT-driver board as a precaution and checked larger low-voltage electrolytics for shorts instead of automatically replacing them. That is the restorer’s chosen approach, not a blanket requirement for every ADM-3A.
Use the model-specific manual to identify components and confirm fit before ordering replacements. A repair note described the flyback as very difficult to obtain at the time of that report; this historical observation does not establish present-day stock. Verify the exact part and its availability when sourcing a CRT, flyback, keyboard switch, or logic component.

Keep CRT work within safe limits
The manual’s anode-discharge warning is an essential boundary: CRT voltage must be discharged to ground before removing a monitor subassembly or the tube. Cleaning an accessible protective surface and servicing the CRT assembly are not equivalent tasks. Do not treat warming, lens removal, or monitor disassembly as casual cleaning instructions, and do not assume insulated tools alone make high-voltage work safe.
For work involving the CRT, monitor subassemblies, or uncertainty about discharge and handling, use a technician competent in CRT service. For lower-voltage board diagnosis, the manual’s voltage checks still require appropriate skill and care. The case reports are useful examples, but they do not replace the service manual or sound service judgment.
